Houston schools

Houston families are choosing a school and a daily operating plan. Entry evidence, educational model, cost, learning support, traffic, transportation, and severe-weather contingencies all belong in the same conversation.

Houston's starting points

Early deadlines, two systems, and a commute that includes the weather

Updated October 7, 2026

Houston's private calendar opens early. St. John's closed Fall 2027 Kindergarten applications on August 28, 2026, Kinkaid's Kindergarten deadline was September 18, and Awty's Kindergarten application is due October 30. Grade 6 and Grade 9 deadlines fall from mid-November into early December, with supporting materials due in January. The Houston admissions calendar keeps them in order.

Independent and faith-based schools such as St. John's, Kinkaid, Awty, Episcopal High School, the Village School, St. Agnes and Strake Jesuit decide on files, tests, visits and interviews. Carnegie Vanguard is different: an HISD School Choice program that depends on residency, gifted eligibility and a lottery, and HISD now offers its gifted testing only to students already enrolled in the district. A private-school score says nothing about that route.

Seat counts vary widely. St. John's describes 42 Kindergarten places, about 50–55 at Grade 6 and 60–65 at Grade 9; Awty about 40 Kindergarten places across its language pathways, 12 at Grade 6 and 25 at Grade 9. EHS, St. Agnes and Strake Jesuit begin at Grade 9, and Strake describes about 350 freshman places. The schools compared page has the full table, and the admissions guide explains how each process works.

Then plan the day around traffic and storms. Awty splits younger and older students between two campuses, Kinkaid staggers dismissal between 2:15 and 4:00, and EHS buildings generally close at 6 p.m. even when practices run later. The list and commute guide includes flood and storm planning.
