A private-school application and an HISD lottery are not one contest

Maintain two evidence columns. A high ISEE score does not establish Carnegie eligibility or lottery odds. A Carnegie matrix score does not predict a private-school decision. Rank HISD choices honestly and keep the private calendar intact until written results exist.

The first Houston deadline has already passed

St. John’s closed its Fall 2027 Kindergarten application on August 28, 2026. The school does not publish a late route, so a family starting now should call Admissions instead of assuming the portal will preserve a chance. Kinkaid Kindergarten is due September 18, followed by Awty Kindergarten on October 30.

Places are not acceptance rates. St. John’s, Awty, and Strake figures describe intended seats, not final odds. Kinkaid calls K, Grade 6, and Grade 9 natural entry points but does not publish counts.

Village accepts applications broadly, yet availability still controls. St. Agnes publishes no Grade 9 or transfer opening count, and Carnegie does not publish Fall 2027 seats or waitlist movement.

West Houston / Energy CorridorVillageCross-town traffic, the published bus route, late activities, or the family change created by boarding
Bellaire Boulevard / SharpstownSt. Agnes and Strake7 a.m. rehearsals, cross-campus programs, afternoon traffic, late teams, and no assumed school bus

“One school” does not always mean one pickup. Awty places PK3 through Grade 1/CP at its Early Learning Campus and older students at the main campus. Kinkaid publishes sharply staggered division dismissals.

EHS buildings are generally open until 6 p.m., but practices may run later and that is not a promise of supervision or transport. METRO Route 65 is public transit—not a school bus. These details can reverse an otherwise sensible sibling or activity plan.

HISD says a School Choice stop may be three or more miles from home; the family must reach it safely. Carnegie’s current page requires residence inside HISD boundaries. It also says HISD-administered gifted testing is now available only to students already enrolled in HISD.

A private-school, home-school, or out-of-district family without an accepted earlier HISD matrix should get written guidance before treating Carnegie as a viable option. For every school, run one wet morning, one late activity, one freeway incident, and one emergency pickup before calling the commute manageable.

Eight names conceal eight different academic bargains

Broad K–12 schools still organize challenge differently

St. John’s and Kinkaid both offer long runways, deep activities, and advanced high-school work. Do not flatten them into substitutes. Compare Grade 6 rotations, Grade 9 placement, course prerequisites, revision and retake rules, advising, independent work, and the amount of choice a new student can actually use.

Awty requires a pathway decision

Language is not a decorative feature at Awty. Program eligibility, English and French expectations, and grade equivalencies reshape the student’s schedule. All Grades 11–12 students in the International Program follow the full IB Diploma Programme; the French Accredited Program is a distinct path toward the French Baccalauréat or BFI.

Ask which decisions remain reversible and what happens after a family move. Awty is also using an interim head for 2026–27 while searching for a permanent leader, so a long-run family should ask which program changes are settled.

EHS makes four pillars and faith part of one week

Academics, arts, athletics, and religion are presented as Four Pillars rather than optional identities. Daily chapel and an Episcopal framework belong in the fit decision. Ask how the pillars compete for time and how the school responds when one student cannot sustain equal intensity in all four.

Carnegie’s value comes with a required model

Carnegie’s tuition-free offer is extraordinary for a student who wants advanced work across the curriculum, research, a smaller urban campus, and serious peers. It is less flexible than “take a few hard classes” implies. The school’s limited athletics and long day are model features, not footnotes.

Village asks for a pathway—and sometimes a residential decision

Village’s American diploma, IB, AP, pre-medical science, entrepreneurship, and computer-science paths create unusual flexibility, while five- and seven-day boarding can change weekday, weekend, and break logistics entirely. The catalog is only the beginning: test thresholds, prerequisites, capacity, extra fees, and continuation rules determine the path a student can actually use.

St. Agnes and Strake center two distinct Catholic, single-sex experiences

The neighboring schools share selected courses, ensembles, theater, dance, and robotics, but neither is functionally coed. St. Agnes builds around Dominican girls’ education; Strake builds around Jesuit boys’ formation. Choose the core culture first and treat cross-school access as a meaningful but scheduled extra.

What each school adds to a serious Houston list

St. John’s School: Upper Kirby / River Oaks edge

Entry shape: K: 42 · Grade 1: 22 · Grade 6: about 50–55 · Grade 9: about 60–65.

The most useful admissions evidence in this set is its published intake geometry. The school offers a broad K–12 program, but families still need to test academic pace, support dosage, construction-era routines, late activities, and a car-centered trip. Read the full St. John’s School guide.

The Kinkaid School: Piney Point Village

Entry shape: PK, K, Grade 6, and Grade 9; seat counts unpublished.

Kinkaid offers the clearest all-through alternative west of the Loop. Its 64.5-acre campus and program breadth can be compelling. The same geography makes the commute, activity pickup, storm plan, and complete cost part of educational fit. Read the full The Kinkaid School guide.

The Awty International School: Spring Branch / I-10–Loop 610 corridor

Entry shape: About 40 K · about 12 Grade 6 · about 25 Grade 9; pathway-specific.

Awty is not merely an independent school with extra languages. Families choose among international, French-accredited, and later diploma structures. The right comparison begins with language readiness and the intended pathway, then adds transport and examination costs. Read the full The Awty International School guide.

Episcopal High School: Bellaire

Entry shape: Grade 9 is the central doorway; transfers depend on space.

EHS begins in Grade 9, so every freshman is new. The Four Pillars, daily chapel, advisory, arts, athletics, and academic support form one concentrated four-year model. Its first-year bill is materially higher than tuition alone. Read the full Episcopal High School guide.

Carnegie Vanguard: Fourth Ward / Midtown edge

Entry shape: Grade 9 main; Grade 10 formally eligible but space unpublished.

Carnegie offers a tuition-free, whole-school gifted program with a demanding required advanced sequence and deliberately limited athletics. GT eligibility and the matrix open the door; the lottery, long day, hub transport, and the student’s appetite for the whole model decide whether it belongs on the list. Read the full Carnegie Vanguard guide.

The Village School: West Houston / Energy Corridor

Entry shape: K, Grade 6, and Grade 9 accepted; opening counts unpublished.

Village combines a large international day school with IB, AP, career-linked diploma paths, and five- or seven-day boarding. Breadth is the advantage; pathway rules, corporate governance, commute, support boundaries, residential operations, and the full fee stack decide fit. Read the full The Village School guide.

St. Agnes Academy: Sharpstown / Bellaire Boulevard

Entry shape: Grade 9 main; transfers in Grades 10–11; counts unpublished.

St. Agnes gives girls the center of academic and leadership life while opening selected coed courses and programs with neighboring Strake. Choose the Dominican Catholic core first, then verify placement, activity access, support, cost, and the early or late commute. Read the full St. Agnes Academy guide.

Strake Jesuit: Sharpstown / Bellaire Boulevard

Entry shape: About 350 freshman places; transfers depend on grade-level space.

Strake offers large-school breadth inside an all-boys Jesuit structure, plus selected programs with St. Agnes. The published freshman count is useful; the family still needs to choose the religious formation, learning environment, activity gates, and southwest-Houston week on purpose. Read the full Strake Jesuit guide.

A named office is not yet a service plan

Carnegie operates inside public IEP and Section 504 obligations. The four private schools determine their own admission, accommodation, and program-capacity boundaries. That legal distinction matters, but it still does not tell a parent who will work with the child during class.

AccommodationDocumentation, approval, implementation, appeal, testing processA current plan transfers automatically
Mental healthUrgent access, recurring-care limit, referral, re-entry planA counselor provides long-term therapy
Advanced learnerPlacement, caps, prerequisites, conflicts, movementA catalog listing is a usable seat

EHS publishes a particularly important boundary: some students may receive minimal classroom accommodations, including up to 50% extended time and assistive technology, but the school does not modify curriculum or create Section 504 plans. Administration retains discretion over what it can reasonably provide. Families should read that boundary before assuming that a current plan transfers.

Ask for a proposed weekly map in writing. Name the adult, minutes, frequency, fee, class displaced, progress measure, and backup plan. If the answer remains philosophical, the family does not yet have a service commitment.

Fall 2027 entrants will generally pay 2027–28 prices, which are not yet public. Request one written first-year estimate and a renewal model through graduation. Compare net obligations—not tuition headlines or grant percentages. Village’s boarding packages have materially different inclusions, St. Agnes leaves several required costs outside tuition, and Strake includes unusually many ordinary charges.

Our read

Houston fit is where program ambition meets a sustainable week

The easy list starts with reputation. The useful list starts with the child’s entry grade, desired operating system, support needs, and geography. St. John’s offers the clearest seat evidence. Kinkaid offers an expansive west-side all-through model.

Awty is the true international pathway choice. EHS offers a shared Grade 9 beginning inside a faith-shaped four-year school. Carnegie offers exceptional public value when the student wants its full academic bargain.

None is “best” without a family clause. A powerful program becomes weaker when the student cannot access its courses, misses needed support, spends three hours in transit, or arrives home too tired to enjoy it. Houston families should be opinionated about the week—not seduced by the noun on the sweatshirt.
