The school visit and the admissions interaction do different jobs

Middle and Upper School open houses are Sunday, September 27, 2026. The Lower School open house is Sunday, October 4.

Tours are optional and do not require a submitted application, but the child must be in the current cycle.

Applicants cannot sit in a regular class before admission. Only admitted students receive a class-visit opportunity, so the fall tour cannot show the full ordinary school day.

Kindergarten uses a current-teacher recommendation, a required CATS WPPSI-IV, and a January small-group readiness evaluation with St. John’s teachers.

CATS charges $325, and outside evaluators are not accepted.

The school warns families not to coach for the WPPSI. It says evaluators report indications of preparation and that coaching can disqualify an application.

Grade 6 and Grade 9 applicants submit current math and English recommendations, an administrator recommendation, records, one current-cycle ISEE report, an interview, and student writing. Grade 9 also requires an extracurricular recommendation; it is optional in Middle School.

A student may sit for the ISEE twice in the cycle, but St. John’s accepts only one report.

The school publishes no cutoff and says accepted students span a broad score range.

Not every family receives the same parent meeting

Parent meetings are for families new to the St. John’s admission process in K, Class 1, and Classes 6–11.

The school does not repeat the meeting for current families, recent-graduate families, or parents who previously completed one for another child.

For Grade 6 and Grade 9, the parent meeting and student interview share a date and time. The public pages do not describe their length, question set, interviewer notes, or evaluation rubric.

This is a good place to be specific and calm. Explain what helps the child learn, where growth is still happening, and what kind of partnership the family can sustain.

Out-of-town applicants in Classes 2–11 can complete interviews, meetings, and testing remotely. Kindergarten and Class 1 candidates must come to Houston for the group evaluation.

A common foundation gradually opens into choice

Lower School combines core skills with science, Houston-centered social studies, arts, language, and physical development. Students have daily recess and daily physical education.

Grade 6 runs on a seven-day rotation. English, math, history, life science, and a French-Latin-Spanish carousel each meet five times; fine arts meets four times, PE five times, and study hall once.

Upper School begins with a shared freshman and sophomore base, then adds more junior and senior choice. Graduation requires at least 21.5 credits across English, history, math, laboratory science, language, fine arts, Jan Plan, and electives.

The school lists 17 AP courses, honors and advanced sequences, and independent study for Classes 10–12. Independent work ends with a public presentation and question period.

Course pages show meaningful differences inside one subject. In math, for example, standard, advanced, and honors sequences move at different speeds and use placement or summer work for some changes.

The clock changes by division, and activities extend it

Lower School runs from 8:15 a.m. to 3:15 p.m. Children may arrive at 7:30, enter classrooms at 8, and use Lower School carpool from 3:15 to 3:45.

The current FAQ says Lower School aftercare runs until 6 p.m. A separate program page still labels its details 2024–25, so confirm Fall 2027 space, sibling access, schedule, and price.

Middle School runs from 8:20 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. Upper School runs from 8:30 a.m. to 3:35 p.m. Fine arts and athletics can push the day later.

Each division also attends chapel on its own rotation. The school is non-denominational and has no official tie to the Church of St.

John the Divine, though it uses the church sanctuary.

The Grade 9 retreat happens just before classes and is designed to build relationships among new students and teachers. Ask how transfers, commuters, and students who miss the trip are folded into that social start.

The public site does not provide a current Upper School bell schedule or a sample student week. Request both before deciding whether seven classes, arts, athletics, travel, and homework can coexist for this child.

The academic challenge is visible; the nightly total is not

St. John’s describes itself as a school of exacting standards and seeks students ready for an academically challenging college-preparatory program.

It does not publish homework estimates by grade or course level.

A historical student-survey write-up hosted by Challenge Success discussed sleep, stress, and cheating at St. John’s.

It is useful context for questions, not evidence of current prevalence or current policy.

Self-selected Niche reviews also describe both excellent teaching and academic pressure. Anonymous reviews cannot tell us how common either experience is.

Support roles are visible; the service model is not

The public staff pages identify a K–8 Academic Support Coordinator and an Upper School Academic Support Coordinator. They do not explain referral rules, meeting frequency, group size, eligibility, or whether support carries an added charge.

The Middle School schedule includes one study hall in each seven-day rotation. That is useful time, but it is not the same as specialized instruction or regular executive-function coaching.

There is a real team, with important unanswered capacity questions

The counseling page lists one Lower School counselor, one Middle School counselor, two Upper School counselors, and a Counseling and Wellness Coordinator. Services include short-term counseling, assessment, crisis management, coaching, consultation, and outside referrals.

The wellness program covers stress, anxiety, executive functioning, ADHD, sleep, eating disorders, relationships, substance use, grief, and digital life through assemblies, advisory, parent events, and other programming.

Clinical Services provides first aid, health monitoring, chronic-condition coordination, and limited on-campus testing. The school says those services do not replace a child’s primary-care clinician.

Public pages do not state counseling caseloads, appointment waits, emergency coverage, session limits, parent-notification rules, or the handoff process to outside care. Ask before an active need becomes urgent.

Breadth is not an afterthought here

The current overview says 86% of students participate in fine arts. Upper School requires one fine-arts credit, which can come from non-auditioned courses or qualifying ensembles.

St. John’s is one of three coeducational schools competing in all 23 SPC sports.

That scale does not answer beginner access, cuts, playing time, late buses, or the cost of required gear.

An Inner Loop address can still produce a long day

St. John’s sits at 2401 Claremont Lane, where River Oaks and Upper Kirby meet.

The campus crosses Westheimer: Upper School and Admission are north of the road, while Lower, Middle, fine arts, and many athletic facilities sit to the south.

The school says current families come from more than 63 ZIP codes. That shows geographic reach, not that every route is sustainable five days a week.

METRO’s 82 Westheimer runs every eight minutes during most weekday hours. The 84 Buffalo Speedway runs every 30 minutes and connects with the 82 near campus.

We found no current public description of a daily St. John’s school-bus network, late activity shuttle, carpool matching, or transportation aid.

Ask the school directly how Lower School arrival and dismissal work for your address.

Run the route at actual arrival and dismissal times. Repeat it for a late practice, a storm day, and the campus side your child will use.

A major Lower School project may shape the daily route

The school’s campaign page describes a new Lower School, underground parking and water detention, a new carpool chute, and a K–5 playground. It says the wider campaign will unfold over years and depend on fundraising.

A Texas accessibility-project record lists an 84,250-square-foot Lower School at 3358 West Alabama. The state record gives a February 2026 start and October 27, 2027 completion date.

That state date is a project filing, not a school promise. Kindergarten families should ask where classes, recess, carpool, parking, and noise will sit during the first months of 2027–28.

Middle and Upper School families should ask how construction affects cross-campus movement, fields, event parking, and flood or storm dismissal. The public pages do not provide a Fall 2027 operating plan.

The visible new-student baseline rises by grade

For 2026–27, tuition is $32,125 in Lower School, $36,370 in Middle School, and $38,530 in Upper School. New-student fees are $2,000, $1,500, and $1,000 respectively.

A new Kindergarten family can see at least $34,125 before unpriced care, meals, uniforms, transport, and activities. The public tuition page lists no K textbook estimate.

A new Grade 6 family can see $38,970–$39,220 after tuition, the fee, $750–$1,000 for books, and the $350 class trip. A new Grade 9 family can see $40,655–$41,105 after tuition, the fee, $750–$1,200 for books, and the $375 trip.

Those baselines still omit transportation, meals, devices, uniforms, optional travel, instrument lessons, and some arts or athletics costs. AP exams are $99 each and the PSAT is $18 at the published 2026–27 price.

The current overview reports a $5.3 million aid budget and 13% of students receiving aid. Awards are need-based; St.

John’s offers no academic, athletic, or other merit scholarships and does not participate in TEFA.

Admission and aid are separate processes, but the school says budget limits can make some decisions need-aware. Returning aid students receive priority, followed by returning students new to aid and then new applicants, with Middle and Upper School priority among new students.

Aid can extend to books, trips, team costs, arts attire, meals, devices, and testing according to award level. The public page does not state the Fall 2027 aid deadline or 2027–28 tuition.

K, Grade 1, Grade 6, and Grade 9 are real doors, with different gates

Kindergarten has 42 offered places, usually divided as 21 boys and 21 girls. The school limits testing to about 175 candidates.

A Fall 2027 Kindergarten candidate must turn five before September 1, 2027 and must not turn six before June 1, 2027.

Every defined St. John’s community candidate enters the testing list.

That group includes siblings, children of alumni, and children of faculty or staff. New-family candidates are added by Future Kindergarten Inquiry date or school discretion until the list reaches about 175.

That is a testing gate before the selection process. Families who are not offered testing receive notice in mid-September.

The 175-to-42 ratio is not an acceptance rate because the school does not publish applications, offers beyond those 42 places, or yield.

Grade 1 is another genuine doorway, with about 22 places. Its application closes October 23, 2026 at 4 p.m. The file includes a teacher recommendation, CATS WPPSI-IV, an on-campus group evaluation, and a no-fee at-home Academic Testing Services assessment.

New-to-process families may receive a parent meeting; out-of-town applicants still attend the group evaluation in Houston.

Grade 6 is a planned expansion with about 50–55 offered places. Grades 7 and 8 generally see only one or two openings each through attrition.

Grade 9 is the largest planned entry, with about 60–65 offered places. The Upper School page says Grades 10 and 11 may have one to three openings each, while the FAQ says non-entry grades generally have zero to two.

Treat that as a current-source conflict, not a precise range.

St. John’s does not publish total applications for any grade.

It also does not publish offer yield, aid-request volume, sibling outcomes, or wait-pool movement.

Kindergarten closes before most families begin touring

The application opens Friday, August 7, 2026. Kindergarten closes at 4 p.m. on Friday, August 28.

Grade 6 and Grade 9 families should treat Friday, November 13 at 4 p.m. as an operational deadline. The file may remain open until Friday, December 4, but later applicants are not guaranteed a parent meeting because interview slots are limited.

The one accepted ISEE report is due January 8. The school calendar lists on-campus ISEE sessions for Grades 7–11 on November 14 and Grades 5–6 on December 5.

Kindergarten group evaluations are scheduled for January 9, 14, and 20. Families receive their assigned time rather than choosing an open visit.

The public FAQ says decisions typically arrive on the Friday before spring break. It does not publish the exact Fall 2027 decision or family reply date, so use the portal and offer letter as controlling records.

Our read

The admissions facts are unusually clear; daily-fit evidence is thinner

St. John’s gives families something genuinely valuable: actual intake numbers for K, Grade 6, and Grade 9, plus live Fall 2027 deadlines and detailed grade-specific evaluation steps.

The educational proposition is also easy to see. This is a large, well-resourced K–12 nonprofit with demanding academics, extensive arts and athletics, experiential programs, and a substantial college-counseling operation.
