Transfer entry
Later admission requires a credit map before a family celebrates
The transfer application and aid deadline is March 26, 2027. Grade 10 applicants take the Upper Level ISEE; Grade 11 and 12 applicants submit PSAT or other high-school testing.
Later applications receive consideration only if the grade still has room.
Academics and workload
Course breadth is real, and official graduation rules currently conflict
The 2025 profile lists 143 full- and part-time faculty and advanced work across English, history, government, economics, psychology, languages, mathematics, computer science, biology, chemistry, physics, environmental science, and music theory. It also names multivariable calculus and a dual-credit engineering course.
Advanced-course loads are capped: sophomores may take up to three AP or Advanced Curriculum courses, while juniors and seniors may take up to four. Freshmen can enter AP World History and advanced English, mathematics, or biology where placed.
Initial placement, appeals, and movement between levels are not sufficiently explained online. Ask how departments use prior grades, tests, teacher judgment, summer work, and first-quarter performance—and what happens when a student is misplaced.
Two official sources conflict. The current college-readiness page says 28 credits and a 100-hour senior service project.
The 2025 profile says 29 credits and 75 service hours. Families should request the Class of 2031 requirement rather than letting a guide silently choose one.
Summer assignments across regular, advanced, and AP courses support describing the school as demanding. They do not support a universal nightly-homework estimate.
Ask for a representative schedule in the intended academic track and activity season.
The St. Agnes relationship
The all-boys core has coeducational openings—not a coed school day
Strake’s house system divides the large school into cross-grade advisories of roughly 15 to 20 boys with one or more adults. That is the main internal structure intended to make a 1,400-student school feel smaller.
The adjacent St. Agnes partnership adds selected academic and religious courses, engineering, band, orchestra, choir, theater, and dance.
Joint programs can be substantial for a student who participates. They do not make ordinary Strake classrooms or social life conventionally coed.
Access can require an audition and a very early start. Joint band generally rehearses around 7:00 a.m.; mixed chorus meets at St.
Agnes before school and requires a prior-spring audition. Ask what is open to Fall 2027 freshmen and how conflicts are resolved.
Learning support and counseling
The support is more substantial than an extra-help period—and still has limits
The Learning Resource Center supports qualified students with diagnosed learning differences at no extra charge. Published services include executive-function coaching, supported study hall, teacher and parent consultation, extended time, low-distraction testing, seating and note-taking accommodations, a freshman executive-function class, and social coaching.
The Academic Resource Center provides structured counseling, mentoring, and study for boys experiencing academic difficulty. Placement can follow performance and counselor or administrator recommendation and is reviewed each grading period.
A grade-level counselor follows a class through graduation. The school also describes weekly small groups, one-to-one counseling, an in-house licensed professional counselor, a student care team, substance-use support, crisis resources, and a four-year healthy-relationship curriculum.
Public pages do not define documentation recency, admission or accommodation eligibility, capacity, coaching frequency, counselor caseloads, recurring-care limits, or every advanced-course boundary. Ask the school to map the child’s need onto a real week and name what it cannot provide.
Arts and athletics
Breadth is impressive; participation still needs a gate-by-gate check
Strake requires a fine-arts credit and offers visual, performing, and literary arts. St.
Agnes materially broadens music and theater. A serious artist should ask about auditions, rehearsal timing, multi-year sequence, conflicts with advanced courses, and access for a student who arrives without prior-school preparation.
The Houston week
The route must work at 7 a.m. and after practice—not only at dismissal
The 52-acre campus is at 8900 Bellaire Boulevard near South Gessner, next to St. Agnes.
Students move among separate academic, athletic, religious, and arts buildings. Houston heat, rain, and storms therefore affect movement inside campus as well as the drive to it.
METRO Route 2 serves Bellaire near South Gessner and advertises frequent service. That is public transit, not a supervised school bus.
No public school-operated commuter-bus network was found, so families should ask before assuming one exists.
One official student feature describes an 8:00 to 2:55 day, but it is not a universal bell schedule. Joint music can begin near 7:00, and sports or productions can end far later.
Test all four trips: early rehearsal, regular arrival, dismissal, and the actual activity end.
For two households or an off-campus primary activity, run the harder address and later day. A school can be an excellent institutional fit and still create a week that removes sleep, family dinner, recovery, or the activity a boy most values.
Cost and aid
The tuition includes unusually much, but it is not literally all-inclusive
Published 2026–27 tuition is $29,970. It includes textbooks, an iPad and insurance, technology, AP exams, test preparation, many course fees, LRC and ARC support, most extracurricular and athletic expenses, goggles, PE uniform, and student parking.
Families should still price lunch, ordinary clothing, transportation, optional personal equipment, selected travel, replacement costs, and specialized programs. Fall 2027 entrants will pay a not-yet-published 2027–28 rate.
For 2026–27, Strake reports a $6.4 million need-based aid budget, grants from $4,000 through full tuition, an average award of $17,096, and aid for 25% of students. It offers no merit, athletic, or extracurricular scholarships.
The freshman aid deadline is January 15, 2027; transfer aid is due March 26. Strake says aid is separate from admission.
Families considering Texas Education Freedom Accounts should verify state eligibility and award rules directly rather than treating the school’s estimate as guaranteed.
Fall 2027 admissions
The freshman process is clear; the committee’s weighting is not
The freshman application is due January 15, 2027. English, mathematics, and principal or counselor recommendations, transcripts, school testing, and the Upper Level ISEE are due January 31.
Decisions arrive March 5, with registration due March 24.
The current profile says more than 800 boys apply for approximately 350 freshman places. That ratio is not an acceptance rate because the school does not publish how many offers it makes to enroll the class.
The public checklist does not list an interview, audition, portfolio, or coach endorsement. Essay prompts and other portal questions are not public.
Open the application early and inspect the live requirements rather than preparing for an invented interview.
Strake publishes no ISEE cutoff, target stanine, or formula. It accepts complete score reports from multiple sittings but does not superscore sections.
The unscored essay is sent to the school. We think it may provide an authentic writing sample, but Strake does not state how it uses it.
A strong application should make a boy’s actual contribution visible without copying Jesuit slogans. An athlete might show coachability, resilience, and team responsibility.
An artist might show sustained practice and collaborative work. Neither should assume that a coach or arts director has a formal admissions role.
Strake’s strongest case is coherence: the boy should want what the school is
We would look closely at Strake for a boy who responds to clear structure, wants an all-boys academic setting, values Catholic service and reflection, and hopes to participate seriously in a large program. The house system and support resources can make that scale more human, while St.
Agnes opens selected coeducational experiences.
We would pause if the student wants a religiously neutral school, a genuinely coed classroom, a very small community, intensive clinical services, guaranteed no-cut activities, or a commute that cannot absorb 7 a.m. rehearsals and late practices. These are not peripheral inconveniences; they change the school he would actually experience.
