Two front doors into one citywide school

Whitney Young has two front doors, and neither stands in for the other. Grade 7 entry admits students to the Academic Center through previous-year marks and the Regional Gifted Centers exam on the elementary GoCPS application.

Grade 9 entry admits students to the high school through final Grade 7 marks and the HSAT on the high-school application. Once inside the Academic Center, students move straight into Grade 9 without reapplying.

The Academic Center is no quiet side door. In the prior cycle it drew 2,038 applicants for 150 offers, and the children admitted follow a six-year course plan.

Entering at Grade 9 means competing in a citywide selective pool that drew 10,140 applicants for 369 offers in the same prior cycle. Those are program totals, not odds for a particular child.

A current Grade 8 applicant should use the Grade 9 process.

Both Fall 2027 applications close November 13, 2026 at 5 p.m., and then the calendars part company. High school offers arrive February 12, 2027; Academic Center offers follow on March 12, 2027.

There is no third door. Whitney Young's February 2026 transfer page says it does not accept transfers into Grades 7, 8, or 9; Grades 10–12 transfer review is competitive and seat-dependent, requires Chicago residency at enrollment, and promises no waitlist after a denial.

CPS also lists separate Grade 9 programs for Deaf/Hard of Hearing students and students with moderate or intensive supports, which use lotteries with stated priorities rather than the 900-point formula.

Nine hundred points, address tiers, and one offer

Grade 9 selective enrollment totals 900 points: 450 from the HSAT and 450 from final Grade 7 marks. Reading and mathematics each supply up to 225 HSAT points.

Final Grade 7 reading, mathematics, science, and social science marks count. An A earns 112.5 points, B earns 75, and C earns 38.

Pluses, minuses, weighting, and extenuating circumstances do not alter transcript marks. Percentiles generate admission points; standard scores resolve ties.

The first 30% of seats go by total score without regard to tier. The remaining 70% are divided equally among four socioeconomic address tiers, then awarded by score within each tier.

Home address—not elementary school—determines tier. Ties break first on HSAT mathematics standard score, then reading standard score, then computerized lottery.

Selective-enrollment and Choice lists are ranked separately. CPS places the applicant in line for every selected program, then matches the highest-ranked eligible program with a seat.

Whitney Young does not control that matching algorithm. An applicant can receive one best selective-enrollment offer.

Receiving one removes the student from all other selective waitlists, even for higher-ranked programs. Without an offer, the student joins each eligible applied-program waitlist.

Accepting a selective offer removes the remaining selective waitlist positions. Accepting a later waitlist offer replaces an earlier accepted offer.

Expired offers are not restored, and CPS says selective programs make few waitlist offers.

GoCPS and HSAT registration open September 9, 2026, at 10 a.m. CPS eighth graders take the HSAT at school on October 7. Non-CPS students may test October 17–18 or October 24–25.

Principal discretion is a limited later Grade 9 review, not an appeal, retest, or guaranteed second chance. CPS says point totals will publish only after February results.

A six-year runway: seventh grade on a high school campus

Seventh graders take language arts, honors environmental science, social science, mathematics, PE, and one or two electives; Grade 8 adds honors English I, honors biology, and honors world history.

That early start lets students bank as many as 12 high-school credits before Grade 9, which opens room later for AP, college credit, arts, or off-campus options, subject to placement, prerequisites, and space.

Academic Center students take core subjects within their own grade cohort, but they may share elective classrooms with high-schoolers. Unlike their older peers, they are not permitted to leave campus for lunch.

Six hundred points and a January exam at IIT

The current-linked rubric totals 600 points: 300 from the Regional Gifted Centers exam and 300 from previous-year grades. Academic Centers have a 2.5 minimum GPA using final marks from the previous school year in reading, mathematics, science, and social science.

Each of four A marks earns 75 grade points, B earns 50, C earns 25, and D or F earns zero.

Applicants take the English-only Regional Gifted Centers exam, which measures verbal and nonverbal reasoning. Academic Center testing is generally scheduled on weekends in mid-to-late January at Illinois Institute of Technology; the exact Fall 2027 appointment is confirmed inside GoCPS.

CPS allows no retest in the same cycle. Current IEP or 504 testing accommodations must be documented within one year of application.

For Grade 7 entry, 30% of seats are awarded citywide by score and 70% are divided equally across four address tiers, then awarded by score within tier. Applicants may select up to six Academic Centers and should rank genuine preferences.

The elementary GoCPS application also opens September 9, 2026, at 10 a.m. and closes November 13 at 5 p.m.

Academic Center ties break on total points, then nonverbal score, verbal score, and computerized lottery. One best Academic Center offer is possible; receiving one removes other Academic Center waitlists.

The offer logic belongs to this category, not the Grade 9 selective list.

Catalog breadth, prerequisites, and advanced coursework

The current school profile lists 266 courses, 33 AP classes, and 88 honors classes. The 2026–27 guide instead says 35 AP courses.

Whitney Young does not rank students. Its graduation plan includes the CPS core plus arts, PE, computer science, career education, electives, financial literacy, service-learning projects, the school-day SAT, and a postsecondary plan.

Incoming Grade 9 honors placement uses prior achievement and admissions-test performance; later levels use course performance, standardized tests, teacher recommendations, and sometimes proficiency tests. A student may take different levels in different subjects.

AP and advanced courses carry prerequisites. Auditions, placement tests, portfolios, applications, or department approval govern some arts, language, Capstone, and specialized classes.

Whitney Young says there is no course waitlist and seniors or students needing graduation requirements receive priority.

The guide tells students to take at least one AP before graduation and requires enrolled students to take the corresponding exam. AP Capstone is a two-year Seminar and Research sequence plus four other qualifying AP exams.

Advanced options include AP Capstone, dual credit through Loyola and City Colleges, and dual enrollment. Current guidance generally targets college coursework to rising juniors and seniors with a 3.0 unweighted GPA and counselor verification.

Orange, Blue, and Dolphin days

The week alternates blocks. Most Mondays and Thursdays are Orange days covering Blocks 1, 3, 5, and 7; most Tuesdays and Fridays are Blue days covering Blocks 2, 4, 6, and 8.

Orange and Blue classes meet for 90 or 95 minutes, alongside a 45-minute advisory or enrichment period.

Most Wednesdays are Dolphin days, when all eight blocks meet for 50 minutes. The year also includes 11 published early-dismissal dates, letting out at 1:55 p.m. rather than the standard 3:15 p.m. final bell.

For homework, the 2025–26 handbook estimates about 30 minutes per subject per day, roughly 2.5 hours in total, and says AP courses may require more. Course descriptions range from steady short practice to 35–40 pages of weekly AP U.S. History reading.

Scaffolding for seventh grade

Whitney Young says Academic Center students have dedicated counselors, five core teachers per grade who meet weekly with the counselor, peer tutoring during every lunch, teacher tutoring before or after school, a lunch-and-after-school Writing Center, and summer orientation.

The school's current support roster names a counseling director, seven counselors, a specialized-services director and case manager, a nurse, two psychologists, and two social workers.

CPS reports moderate- and intensive-support programs but no transition program. It labels the campus “First Floor Usable,” not fully accessible.

A big, diverse campus with a lot to join

Whitney Young brings together 2,136 students from across Chicago: 584 Asian, 520 Hispanic, 518 White, 370 Black, 125 multiracial, 13 Native American, 5 Hawaiian/Pacific Islander, and 1 student in another reported category. The population includes 591 economically disadvantaged students, 169 students with IEPs, and 41 English learners.

CPS labels Whitney Young's supportive environment “Very Strong.” Niche records a 4.2 rating across 1,261 self-selected reviews, where praise centers on breadth, arts, and diversity and complaints mention competition, stress, and counseling access.

The school profile lists band, choir, orchestra, piano, guitar, dance, drama, theater, jazz, painting, sculpture, ceramics, photography, graphic design, and video, with performing-arts classes meeting during the day at honors level. Whitney Young advertises more than 147 clubs and activities and 36 interscholastic teams across 19 sports.

A serious ensemble, production, or varsity sport can turn a 3:15 dismissal into a much later commute.

CPS reports 318 of 2,213 students chronically absent in 2024–25, or 14.4%. The rate climbs by grade, from 1.4% in Grade 7 to 30.3% in Grade 12, and reaches 37.3% among students with IEPs.

Transit, and what a tuition-free school still costs

The campus is at 211 S. Laflin Street.

CPS lists CTA buses 126, 20, 60, 7, 755, 9, and X9 and the Blue, Green, and Pink lines.

CPS lists earliest drop-off at 7 a.m., the school day as 8–3:15, and after-school hours to 6.

There is no private-school tuition. The 2025–26 handbook says every student is assessed a general school fee, with additional Grade 8 and 12 graduation fees, but tells families to check Aspen for the amount.

The 2026–27 course guide lists AP exams at $100 each, subject to change, and additional late or cancellation charges.

Our read

An ecosystem, not an admissions win

Whitney Young's real distinction is range. It joins a two-year Academic Center, a large Grade 9 intake, long-block academics, serious visual and performing arts, broad languages, college-credit routes, many activities, and competitive athletics on one citywide campus.

The two entry routes should lead to two different family conversations. For Grade 7, ask whether the child wants six years in a large older-peer environment and will use the early-credit runway well.

For Grade 9, protect the record, prepare sensibly for the HSAT, rank true preferences, and ignore cutoff fortune-telling.

Academic Center links, course access and fees at Whitney Young

Whitney Young is big and has two entry routes, so ask how Academic Center students connect with the high school and what happens when electives fill.

Routes, courses, support and fees

  1. For an Academic Center student, how much daily interaction or shared class time is there with high school students outside elective periods?
  2. How are course requests handled when an honors or AP elective is oversubscribed, and what happens if a student does not get a first choice?
  3. For students who need academic or emotional support in Grades 9 through 12, what does the counselor check-in look like in practice?
  4. What general school fees and graduation fees does Aspen list for this school year, and what is the fee waiver process?
  5. If a student stays for sports, arts rehearsals, or clubs past 3:15 p.m., what supervision and transportation are there until 6 p.m.?
