Nine hundred points, followed by two admission lines

The current Payton program uses 900 points: 450 from the HSAT and 450 from final Grade 7 marks. Reading and math each supply up to 225 HSAT points.

Final Grade 7 reading, mathematics, science, and social science marks count. An A earns 112.5 points, B earns 75, and C earns 38.

Pluses, minuses, weighting, and extenuating circumstances do not change transcript marks.

The first 30% of seats go by total score without regard to tier. The remaining 70% are divided equally among four socioeconomic address tiers, then awarded by score within each tier.

The address—not the elementary school—determines tier.

Ties break first on HSAT math standard score, then reading standard score, then computerized lottery. Percentiles generate admission points; standard scores resolve ties.

Families should not substitute one measure for the other.

Rank the school you want—not a rumor about what is possible

Selective-enrollment and Choice lists are ranked separately. CPS places each applicant in line for every selected program, then matches the highest-ranked eligible program with space.

Payton does not run the matching algorithm.

An applicant can receive one best selective-enrollment offer. Receiving one removes the student from other selective waitlists, including higher-ranked programs.

Without an offer, the student joins each eligible applied-program waitlist.

Accepting a selective offer removes other selective waitlist positions. Accepting a later waitlist offer replaces the earlier accepted offer.

Expired offers are not restored, and CPS says selective programs make few waitlist offers.

Payton’s 2025–26 profile prints Class of 2029 score ranges and urges families to rank Payton first. Those figures describe an earlier pool, tier map, and seat count.

Rank Payton first only if it is truly the student’s first choice; a historical minimum is not a Fall 2027 target.

Principal discretion is competitive, separate, and not guaranteed

After initial selections, selective-enrollment principals may fill a designated number of Grade 9 seats under CPS guidelines. The standing process is separate, extremely competitive, and restricted to students who applied and tested in the initial cycle.

A student may apply to only one selective program through discretion. The prior handbook allowed statements, recommendations, honors, and awards.

Fall 2027 dates, Payton seat count, school rubric, and materials are not yet public.

This is not an informal appeal or private route around tiers. Build the main list honestly and a complete parallel plan before results arrive.

Honors is the floor, while depth comes through several pathways

Payton’s current graduation page says every course is honors or AP level and recommends 28 credits against the 24-credit CPS minimum. It recommends four years each of mathematics, science, and world language, plus two fine-arts credits.

The 2025–26 profile lists AP Capstone, dual-credit and dual-enrollment courses, Early College Coursework, the KAM honors mathematics sequence, and Payton Advanced Science Courses. These are distinct pathways, not interchangeable labels.

Payton weights regular courses on a four-point scale, honors on five, and AP or College Bridge on six, and it does not rank students. That structure can reward advanced enrollment, but it does not tell families how sections, prerequisites, or workload are distributed.

The math department emphasizes problem solving, multiple representations, and technology rather than acceleration alone. Families should ask for a four-year sequence from the student’s actual entry placement before admiring the endpoint.

The catalog is broad; access rules deserve equal attention

CPS currently lists American Sign Language, French, Latin, Mandarin, and Spanish. The school describes proficiency-oriented teaching, while the profile lists AP French, Latin, Chinese, Spanish Language, and Spanish Literature.

The 2025–26 profile lists 28 AP subjects, including both calculus courses, three computer-science options, AP Capstone, multiple laboratory sciences, arts, social sciences, and languages. A published title is not a guarantee that every course runs or every qualified student receives a seat.

The prior handbook describes course programming as a conference involving current grades, prerequisites, teacher concerns, family and counselor input, and Diverse Learner review. It also says AP students are expected to sit for the exam and schedule changes become restricted after submission.

Public materials do not show current placement tests, cut scores, override rights, AP denial counts, section caps, or how heritage speakers enter language sequences. Ask those questions before turning an advanced-course list into a four-year promise.

Four long blocks make room for depth—and make every absence expensive

The current 2026–27 bell schedule runs from 8 a.m. to 3:26 p.m. Blue and Orange days each hold four 92-minute classes, split lunch periods, and a 50-minute enrichment block. CPS rounds the school day to 3:30 p.m.

Seminar days begin with advisory, then two 90-minute seminars and lunch, ending at 1 p.m. The shorter day can provide breathing room, but families should ask how students use the afternoon and how seminar-day changes affect childcare or travel.

The prior handbook promises meaningful homework rather than busywork and acknowledges that the same task may take one student 45 minutes and another 75. It also describes a no-homework-over-break policy, but gives no reliable nightly range by grade or course combination.

Long blocks support labs, writing, discussion, and performance. They also raise the cost of an absence and can concentrate deadlines.

Ask current students with comparable schedules to reconstruct a recent five-day calendar, including transit, activities, studying, and sleep.

The most distinctive experiences live outside the standard transcript

About every other Wednesday, students take two semester-long seminars intended to promote learning beyond the traditional schedule. The school profile frames them as a way to de-stress and gives examples that cut across disciplines and interests.

Enrichment is embedded at the end of most days for every student. The school says it supports teacher help, clubs, cultural groups, and academic work; the student portal makes students responsible for scheduling their time.

The profile also highlights domestic and international Global Connections experiences and says financial circumstances should not prevent participation. The public materials do not publish trip-by-trip cost, aid, selection, cancellation, or accommodation data.

Support exists, but public pages do not reveal its dosage

Payton’s counseling program says it addresses academic, personal and social, and college and career development through an equity and belonging lens. Students may book lunch-period appointments; caregivers schedule separate office-hour meetings.

Enrichment creates a daily route to teacher help, clubs, and tutoring. The staff directory lists counselors, special educators, a case manager, paraprofessionals, a nurse, a social worker, a speech pathologist, and an orientation-and-mobility specialist.

CPS says Payton offers a significantly modified curriculum with moderate supports and identifies the campus as “First Floor Usable,” with usable accessible parking. Those labels do not establish access to every classroom, lab, stage, gym, lunchroom, bathroom, or evacuation route.

Diverse enrollment does not answer the belonging question

CPS currently reports roughly 1,250 students: 382 Asian, 347 White, 305 Hispanic, 138 Black, 69 multiracial, five Native American, and four Hawaiian or Pacific Islander students. It also reports 370 economically disadvantaged students, 99 students with IEPs, and 38 English learners.

Those counts establish composition, not lived inclusion. CPS labels Payton’s supportive environment “Very Strong,” while the public 5Essentials summary does not by itself supply every response rate, item, or subgroup view a family would need.

Niche shows a 4.1 rating across 469 self-selected reviews. Recent student and parent comments praise engaged teachers, peers, opportunities, and rigor, while others describe pressure, uneven support, administration concerns, and racial or social tension.

These are prompts for inquiry, not representative findings.

Payton offers no tours or shadow days, only one September open house, though public extracurricular events are open to the community. Families therefore need deliberate conversations with several current students—not only ambassadors—about comparison, identity, help-seeking, and ordinary bad days.

Breadth is easy to see; access and logistics take more work

Payton recommends two fine-arts credits. Its profile lists visual and performing arts pathways, while current calendars and department media show student dance, choral, instrumental, visual-art, and theatrical work.

The 2026–27 participation packet requires a physical valid for 395 days and policy forms. Public pages do not give full tryout, cut, fee, equipment, travel, or late-return details.

Ask sport by sport and season by season.

Tuition-free does not mean cost-free—or time-free

Payton is at Wells and Oak in Old Town. CPS lists the 22, 36, 37, 66, 70, and 156 buses plus Blue, Brown, Purple, and Red train lines.

Those trains are not all at the door; time the complete transfer chain.

The building may open as early as 6:30 a.m., and most school days end near 3:30. Test an 8 a.m. arrival, winter darkness, service disruptions, and a 5:30 p.m. departure with an instrument or sports bag.

Attendance is tuition-free. The 2025–26 handbook says some families paid an annual grade-level instructional fee and AP fees, with optional yearbook and locker costs; fee waivers were available to eligible families.

It does not publish current amounts.

Friends of Payton requests voluntary donations and describes an approximately $1,700-per-family funding gap for households able to contribute. That is fundraising language, not tuition or a required family bill.

Budget for transit, meals, exams, calculators, instruments, athletics, dances, trips, technology loss, and time—then ask which costs can be waived.

The dates are confirmed; the competitive facts are still forming

GoCPS and HSAT registration open September 9, 2026, at 10 a.m. The application closes November 13 at 5 p.m. Initial offers are scheduled for February 12, 2027.

CPS eighth graders take the HSAT at school on October 7. Non-CPS students may test October 17–18 or October 24–25.

Confirm testing accommodations, language access, and the correct student record before the chosen session.

Still pending: Payton’s Fall 2027 seat count, applicant pool, score distribution, final tier allocations, point totals, offer-response deadline, waitlist opening, waitlist movement, and principal-discretion calendar.

Payton’s own admissions page still describes the 2026–27 cycle as closed. Use it for school events and contacts, not the Fall 2027 system calendar.

CPS is the controlling source for GoCPS dates and selection mechanics.

The ordinary doorway is Grade 9; every other route needs caution

Payton’s academic selective-enrollment program serves Grade 9 applicants. CPS reports 7,932 applicants and 350 offers in the previous application cycle.

The label does not identify Fall 2027 seats, and the ratio is not a personal admission probability.

CPS separately lists a significantly modified curriculum with moderate supports and a visual-impairment program. Their lottery and proximity priorities differ from selective scoring.

They are disability-service placements, not alternative academic-admission channels; confirm eligibility and program fit with the IEP team.

Payton’s transfer page currently offers only a 2026–27 application and a March 6, 2026 deadline. It does not yet publish a 2027–28 packet, eligible grades, seats, evaluation weights, decision date, or a promise that openings exist.

A later-grade family should preserve the current school plan until Payton posts a new packet and confirms space. A complete transfer file is not evidence of a vacancy, and no public source supports predictable transfer odds.

Our read

Payton is compelling when the student wants the week, not the win

Payton’s real distinction is programmatic: long honors-level blocks, broad language and advanced pathways, embedded enrichment, recurring seminars, a substantial arts and activities ecosystem, and classmates drawn from across Chicago.

The admissions system is unforgiving but legible. Protect accurate Grade 7 records, prepare for the HSAT without building a family identity around it, rank true preferences, and ignore anyone selling a stable cutoff.

The live pool, seat count, tier, and tie-break sequence will decide this cycle.
