Three admissions systems
The same student can look different in each process
| System | Schools here | What actually controls |
|---|---|---|
| Independent | Latin · UChicago Lab · Parker | School-specific entry space, file, visits, testing or assessment, and aid |
| CPS selective enrollment | Northside · Payton · Whitney Young · Lane | Eligibility, official grades, test, tiers, ranking, matching, and Chicago residency |
| Catholic / Jesuit | Loyola Academy | Testing at Loyola, HSPT, its application window, records, formation, and aid files |
Do not translate one system into another. A private-school interview is not part of the CPS score. A selective-enrollment point total is not an independent-school prediction. Loyola’s requirement that a freshman test at Loyola affects application access and aid. Build one ledger with separate evidence columns rather than one imagined “chance.”
For the current cycle, GoCPS opens September 9, 2026 at 10 a.m., closes November 13 at 5 p.m., tests CPS eighth graders October 7 and non-CPS applicants on two October weekends, and releases initial high school offers February 12, 2027.
Latin Grade 9 answers arrive February 11; Parker answers February 26. Loyola’s live events page confirms a December 5 HSPT, but its detailed application calendar had not yet advanced to the Class of 2031. Do not fill that gap with last year’s dates.
The Chicago map
A workable morning can still become an impossible afternoon
| Zone | Schools in this comparison | The everyday-life question |
|---|---|---|
| Gold Coast / Lincoln Park / Old Town | Latin · Parker · Payton | Which CTA trip works after the student’s actual activity? |
| North and Northwest Side | Northside · Lane | Does the route still work after tutoring, rehearsal, or a game? |
| Near West Side | Whitney Young | Can both households reach Laflin Street at dismissal and later? |
| Hyde Park | UChicago Lab | Which of two campuses belongs to this grade, and where are activities? |
| North Shore | Loyola Academy | How do Wilmette classes, Glenview athletics, Pace, Metra, and pickup connect? |
Run arrival and late-return trips on a school day. Include the walk, transfer, winter disruption, missed connection, away game, second home, and emergency pickup.
CPS does not promise ordinary selective-enrollment busing; eligibility, capacity, and driver availability matter. Lab says it provides no school bus. Loyola’s Northwest Chicago Pace trips leave shortly after dismissal, so they are not late-activity transportation.
A grade label is not a seat count
K, Grade 6, Grade 7, and Grade 9 are separate searches
| School | Early entry | Middle entry | Grade 9 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Latin | JK main door; SK–4 attrition | Grade 5 main; Grade 6 about 2–3 | Major entry year |
| Northside | None | None | Selective enrollment |
| Payton | None | None | Selective enrollment |
| Whitney Young | None in this comparison | Grade 7 Academic Center | Selective enrollment |
| Lane | None | Grade 7 Academic Center | Selective enrollment |
| UChicago Lab | Nursery 3 clearest; K space-dependent | Grade 6 clear door | Clear high-school door |
| Parker | JK clear door | Grade 6 clear door | Clear Upper School door |
| Loyola | None | None | HSPT-centered freshman process |
Private-school openings are estimates or structural entry years, not acceptance rates. CPS seats and final Fall 2027 point totals are not yet knowable. Academic Center and Grade 9 routes use different tests, timelines, scoring, and categories. Confirm the child’s grade and current-school status before relying on any checklist.
Look inside the timetable
These schools organize challenge in different ways
Progressive does not mean unstructured
Parker places inquiry, projects, civic engagement, and student voice inside a defined program. Lab’s university relationship and history of educational experimentation shape a different N3–12 system. Latin offers broad independent-school academics across three divisions. Ask each school to show how a teacher responds when curiosity, deadlines, collaboration, and required content pull in different directions.
The selective publics are not four copies of one program
Northside uses long blocks and Wednesday colloquia. Payton combines long blocks, seminars, and enrichment. Whitney Young publishes enormous academic and arts breadth and uses both Academic Center and high-school pathways. Lane uses eight periods at far greater scale. Admission uses one district system; the daily experiences remain different.
Loyola adds faith, formation, and scale
Loyola is not simply a private high school with lower tuition. Theology, service, retreats, spiritual life, counseling, athletics, and a large student body form one Jesuit operating system. Families should ask how the mission appears on an ordinary day and how a student of any or no faith participates.
Advanced labels require translation
AP, honors, advanced, college-credit, and school-designed courses do not promise equal rigor or access. Ask for freshman placement, prerequisites, caps, scheduling conflicts, movement rules, and the actual path taken by comparable students. A catalog measures inventory, not a child’s week.
Our conditional read
What each school adds to a serious shortlist
Latin School: Gold Coast
Entry shape: JK, Grade 5, and Grade 9; Grade 6 only about 2–3 spaces.
A large JK–12 independent school with broad academics, arts, athletics, and an unusually early Fall 2027 application deadline. Translate “Kindergarten” carefully: JK is the entry cohort; Senior Kindergarten is mainly attrition space. Leadership transition and complete cost belong in the decision. Read the full Latin School guide.
Northside College Prep: North Park
Entry shape: Grade 9 selective enrollment.
A public high school built around honors expectations, long blocks, and Wednesday colloquia. The fit question is whether a student wants intellectual range and can manage the schedule, course allocation, and commute. A prior cutoff is not a forecast or a personal probability. Read the full Northside College Prep guide.
Walter Payton College Prep: Old Town
Entry shape: Grade 9 selective enrollment.
A smaller selective-enrollment high school with honors-level courses, broad advanced pathways, seminars, and enrichment. The Old Town location may simplify some routes and punish others. An offer should trigger a closer look at the week—not end the comparison. Read the full Walter Payton College Prep guide.
Whitney Young: Near West Side
Entry shape: Grade 7 Academic Center or Grade 9 selective enrollment.
One campus contains two different entry decisions. Grade 7 uses the elementary selective-enrollment system and can become a six-year path; Grade 9 uses HSAT and Grade 7 marks. The school’s immense academic, arts, and activity range rewards a student who can navigate it. Read the full Whitney Young guide.
Lane Tech: Roscoe Village / North Center
Entry shape: Grade 7 Academic Center or Grade 9 selective enrollment.
At more than 4,500 students, Lane’s scale is its opportunity and its central risk. The Academic Center is an early high-school-credit decision, not ordinary middle school. The course and activity menu is enormous; ask to see the current ordinary-day schedule because the live bell page is presently a special schedule. Read the full Lane Tech guide.
UChicago Lab: Hyde Park
Entry shape: Nursery 3, Grade 6, and Grade 9 are clearest.
An operating unit of the University of Chicago, not merely a school with a partnership. Families encounter different programs and two campuses across the age span. Kindergarten and other grades depend on space; Grade 6 and Grade 9 are the useful later doors. Read the full UChicago Lab guide.
Francis W. Parker: Lincoln Park
Entry shape: JK, Grade 6, and Grade 9.
Progressive education appears in projects, discussion, civic work, and student voice—not as an absence of expectations. Parker is best investigated through how teachers structure freedom, how support works, and whether a child wants the responsibility built into the model. Read the full Francis W. Parker guide.
Loyola Academy: Wilmette
Entry shape: Grade 9; transfer space limited.
A large coed Jesuit high school with a separate Catholic admissions system, four years of formation, 27 AP courses, extensive arts and athletics, and a much lower sticker price than the independents. The HSPT location, faith life, placement, and North Shore week are part of the school—not administrative details. Read the full Loyola Academy guide.
The public comparison is larger than four schools
Selective enrollment is one CPS path, not the definition of public fit
A serious Grade 9 list should also investigate the neighborhood high school and relevant Choice programs: International Baccalaureate, STEM, arts, career and technical education, military, dual language, and other thematic programs.
Charters participate through their own program rules within or alongside the GoCPS ecosystem. These options can provide a closer route, a specialized sequence, or a less test-dependent admission mechanism.
Compare the program, not the umbrella. An IB path may require a particular course sequence. A neighborhood school may house selective or lottery-based programs beside general education.
A CTE pathway can offer meaningful applied study but still needs diligence on entry, credential completion, scheduling, and access to arts or advanced academics. Keep at least one public route the student would genuinely attend rather than using it as a paper backup.
Support has a job description
A resource page does not yet describe a child’s service
CPS schools operate within IDEA, IEP, Section 504, and FAPE obligations; campus implementation, staffing, caseload, and service dosage still require diligence.
Independent and Catholic schools state their own capacity and accommodation boundaries. Neither legal category alone tells the family who will teach a skill, how often, or how a particular advanced class will work with the student’s plan.
| Need | Ask for | Do not infer |
|---|---|---|
| Reading or writing remediation | Method, trained provider, minutes, group size, progress measure | A learning center provides direct remediation |
| Executive function | Adult, schedule, caseload, class missed, fading plan | Advisory is individual coaching |
| Accommodation | Documentation, decision maker, implementation, appeal, test process | A current plan transfers automatically |
| Mental health | Urgent access, recurring-care limit, referral, return-to-school plan | A counselor supplies ongoing therapy |
| Advanced learner | Placement, caps, conflicts, movement, acceleration, missed sequence | A listed class is personally accessible |
Put the proposed support into a weekly timetable. Name the adult, minutes, frequency, fee, class or activity displaced, progress measure, and backup when the provider is absent. If the school cannot do that, the family has a philosophy—not yet a service plan.
Compare the written family obligation
Four schools charge no tuition—and still are not cost-free
| School | Published 2026–27 baseline | Important context |
|---|---|---|
| Latin | $44,585–$50,635 tuition | Care, transport, trips, device, and participation may add cost |
| Northside | $0 CPS tuition | Transit, meals, activities, devices, and family time still matter |
| Payton | $0 CPS tuition | Ask for the current school-fee and participation schedule |
| Whitney Young | $0 CPS tuition | Arts, athletics, transit, and opportunity access can carry costs |
| Lane | $0 CPS tuition | Scale and citywide commute create non-tuition costs |
| UChicago Lab | $32,256–$49,050 tuition | University-employee benefits and ordinary aid are different systems |
| Parker | $46,140–$53,330 including the mandatory grade fee | Lunch, music lessons, and afterschool care remain outside that total |
| Loyola | $22,625 tuition | Current freshman technology and book fees add $1,000; Fall 2027 fees are not posted |
Fall 2027 private-school entrants will generally pay 2027–28 prices that are not yet public. Ask for tuition, mandatory fee, deposit, payment plan, refund obligation, transport, meals, books, device, trips, arts, athletics, retreats, and expected giving in one written scenario. Then model annual renewal through graduation.
The aid letter still is not the contract. Put the deposit, nonrefundable amount, binding date, withdrawal formula, payment-plan start, and tuition-refund policy beside the award.
Then add lunch, care, transit, activity travel, device, learning support, and any expected giving. The only useful private-versus-public comparison is the household’s written net obligation for a school week it can actually operate.
Our read
The strongest Chicago list respects the admissions system and the train home
Families can waste months treating GoCPS, private admission, and the Catholic process as one contest for “top schools.” They are not one contest. Preserve each route, rank GoCPS honestly, and keep the neighborhood option real until written offers and costs exist.
We would also resist the easy shorthand. Selective does not describe teaching. Progressive does not mean unstructured. Catholic does not mean merely affordable private. Large does not mean impersonal, and small does not guarantee support. Ask for the mechanism behind every adjective.
The right school is the one whose obligations this student wants and whose route, support, and full cost the household can sustain. A famous name does not compensate for four years spent fighting the daily operating system.
