Scoring and tiers
Nine hundred points, then two different lines
The current school profile uses a 900-point framework: 450 HSAT points and 450 Grade 7 points. Reading and math each supply up to 225 HSAT points.
Final Grade 7 marks in reading, mathematics, science, and social science count. An A earns 112.5 points; B earns 75; C earns 38.
Pluses, minuses, weighting, and extenuating circumstances do not alter transcript marks.
The first 30% of seats go by total score, regardless of tier. The remaining 70% are divided equally among four address tiers, then awarded by score within each tier.
Ties break first on HSAT math standard score, then reading standard score, then computerized lottery. Percentiles generate admission points; standard scores matter for tie-breaking.
Keep those measures separate.
Ranking and offers
Rank desire, not a theory about odds
Selective-enrollment and Choice lists are ranked separately. CPS places each applicant in line for every selected program, then matches the highest-ranked eligible program with space.
Schools do not run this matching process.
An applicant can receive one best selective-enrollment offer. Receiving one removes the student from other selective-enrollment waitlists, including higher-ranked programs.
Without an offer, the student joins every eligible applied-program waitlist.
Accepting a selective offer removes other selective waitlist positions. A later accepted waitlist offer replaces the earlier accepted offer.
Expired offers are not restored.
Selective programs make few waitlist offers, according to CPS. Tuesdays and Fridays are standard release days once rolling lists open.
Fall 2027 Northside movement cannot be inferred from a prior list number.
A narrow second route
Principal discretion is not a private back door
After initial selections, selective-enrollment principals may fill a designated number of Grade 9 seats under CPS guidelines. The process is separate, extremely competitive, and limited to students who applied and tested initially.
A student may apply to only one selective program through discretion. The prior handbook allowed personal statements, recommendations, honors, and awards.
Fall 2027 dates and materials are not yet published.
Do not shape the main ranking around this possibility. Apply to Northside in the initial round, rank honestly, and build a complete parallel plan before results arrive.
Academic model
Honors foundations with wide upper-level pathways
The published 2025–26 program places freshmen in Honors Pre-AP English, Honors World Studies, and Honors Physics. Math and language placement depend on prior preparation.
The sequence is ambitious from the first semester.
The catalog spans English, social science, laboratory science, mathematics, six world languages, computer science, visual arts, music, and physical education. AP Capstone adds AP Seminar and AP Research.
A course title does not guarantee a seat. Students request seven courses with counselors.
When demand exceeds capacity, requests are randomized, with older grades receiving priority.
AP Research ends with a 4,000–5,000-word paper and oral defense. AP science courses require earlier honors sequences.
Families should map prerequisites backward rather than count catalog titles.
Schedule and workload
Long blocks create freedom and delayed consequences
CPS lists an 8 a.m.–3:15 p.m. day. The prior 2024–25 schedule used four 100-minute blocks on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday.
Wednesday combined flex, advisory, colloquium, and lunch.
Long blocks reduce daily class changes and permit labs, discussion, and projects. They also make an absence expensive.
Ask how teachers support missed instruction and how quickly incomplete work compounds.
Published courses show uneven workload. AP U.S. History expects 40–60 textbook pages in a typical week.
AP European History lists one to three weekly textbook hours, plus primary and secondary sources.
No current official source gives homework hours by grade or course combination. Ask students with similar schedules, then price extracurricular travel and sleep.
“Rigorous” is not a usable weekly plan.
The distinctive Wednesday
Colloquium can be the reason to choose Northside
Northside’s Wednesday design separates colloquium from ordinary academic blocks. Offerings emphasize projects, interests, culture, service, and community.
Freshman orientation has historically occupied the first semester.
Flex periods may support academic enhancement, enrichment, or wellness. Ask which sessions are assigned, which are chosen, how attendance works, and whether struggling students retain meaningful choice.
The public site does not provide a complete Fall 2026 colloquium catalog or placement rules. Request recent lists, enrollment caps, costs, travel, grading, and examples accessible to students with IEPs.
Support and accessibility
A real team, with a demanding mainstream baseline
Northside assigns each student a counselor for four years. Its current team lists counselors, social workers, psychologists, nurses, case managers, therapists, an audiologist, and a hearing itinerant teacher.
IEP services include resource support, co-taught inclusion, instructional classes, related services, and a cluster program. The honors or AP mainstream expects the same curricular outcomes with accommodations and individualized support.
The catalog calls Northside fully accessible, yet CPS currently says “First Floor Usable” and marks accessible parking unavailable. That conflict needs an individualized route inspection, not reassurance.
Wellness and persistence
High achievement does not erase strain
CPS currently reports 23.9% chronic absence, meaning students missed at least 10% of school days. The rate fell 5.5 points from the prior year.
It includes excused and unexcused absences.
CPS also reports a 0.3% one-year dropout rate. Neither measure explains causes, midyear transfers, health needs, course pressure, or student experience.
Ask for grade-level and subgroup denominators.
The support page offers counseling, referrals, and tutoring “tables.” Public materials do not state counseling caseloads, appointment waits, crisis response times, or the dosage of executive-function support.
Niche reviews frequently praise community and resources while also describing pressure. The 4.1 rating across 675 self-selected reviews is context, not a representative climate measure.
Culture and belonging
Diverse in several ways, selective by design
CPS currently reports enrollment as 32.7% White, 29.68% Hispanic, 23.91% Asian, 6.52% Black, and 5.39% multiracial. About 33.9% are economically disadvantaged, 12.7% have IEPs, and 5% are English learners.
Those categories do not measure friendship, voice, identity safety, or classroom inclusion. Northside publicly features Black Student Union events, International Night, cultural organizations, service, and student-led clubs.
The 2026 5Essentials summary calls Northside organized for improvement. That label does not replace response rates, item-level results, or subgroup views.
Request the complete report before generalizing about climate.
Arts, clubs, and athletics
Breadth is visible; access still needs checking
The academic catalog includes visual art, band, orchestra, choir, piano, guitar, drama, film, and journalism. School calendars show concerts, a sculpture race, a musical, International Night, and a long AP-exam season.
The athletics site publishes a current student-family handbook and registration route. Verify each team, cut policy, practice location, fee, equipment, transportation, late return, and conflict with advanced courses.
Commute and daily logistics
A citywide school creates a citywide family schedule
CPS lists buses 82, 92, and 93 and the Brown Line. The school sits at Kedzie and Bryn Mawr, not beside a Brown Line station.
Every family should time the complete transfer chain.
Test the route for an 8 a.m. arrival, winter darkness, disruptions, and a 5 p.m. activity departure. A 45-minute map estimate can become a much longer school-day commitment.
CPS does not publish dedicated Northside transportation, aftercare, or late-bus guarantees. High school independence is assumed.
Families should plan for illness, missed connections, equipment, and evening events.
Application and attendance are tuition-free. Potential costs include transit beyond CPS support, meals, calculators, instruments, athletics, dances, trips, AP-related expenses, technology loss, and fundraising.
A complete current price sheet is unavailable.
Fall 2027 status
The calendar is current; the competitive landscape is not
GoCPS and HSAT registration open September 9, 2026, at 10 a.m. The application closes November 13 at 5 p.m. Initial offers are scheduled for February 12, 2027.
Current testing: CPS eighth graders take the HSAT during school on October 7. Non-CPS students may test October 17–18 or October 24–25.
Confirm accommodations and language before selecting a session.
CPS has not published Northside’s Fall 2027 seat count, applicant pool, score distribution, final tier allocations, point totals, offer-response deadline, waitlist opening, or principal-discretion dates.
CPS says Fall 2027 point totals will appear only after February results. Prior cutoffs describe earlier applicant pools and seats.
They are context, not a target or guarantee.
Grade 9 and transfers
One normal entry year; later entry is exceptional
Grade 9 is the only grade served by Northside’s GoCPS selective-enrollment program. To&Through counted 289 first-time ninth graders in 2024–25.
That cohort size is not the Fall 2027 seat count.
Northside says it accepts very few transfers into Grades 10–12. It reviews requests in June or July, after freshman enrollment.
It does not review Grade 9 transfers or admit midyear transfers.
For 2027–28, transfer applications reopen in January 2027. The file requires coursework, semester grades, standardized results, three recommendations, attendance, discipline, and supporting documents.
Eligible finalists and families are interviewed.
Transfer vacancies, review weights, interview rubric, curricular fit, and offer count are unpublished. Students must live in Chicago by July 1 before enrollment.
A complete packet does not establish realistic availability.
A rare program, best chosen without prestige fog
Northside’s strongest feature is not a ranking. It is the combination of demanding core courses, broad languages and arts, long blocks, flexible Wednesdays, and a community small enough for student-led interests to matter.
The admission system is unforgiving but legible. Submit accurate Grade 7 marks, take the HSAT, rank honestly, and refuse invented cutoff certainty.
A high score still meets a live applicant pool, seat count, tier, and tie-break process.
