Representative, not ranked
Read each school through entry, process, geography, and evidence age.
The table intentionally mixes program types. It is not a shortlist or hierarchy. It shows why a Chicago family should not compare schools on reputation alone. “Unknown” means the current cited page does not make the fact public; it does not mean no seats or no support exist.
This page covers who can apply where and how each process works. For month-by-month dates, school deadlines, and how GoCPS lines up with private decisions, use the Chicago admissions timeline.
In the table, ISEE means Independent School Entrance Examination; SSAT means Secondary School Admission Test; and SAO means Standard Application Online.
| School / geography | K reality | Grade 6 reality | Grade 9 reality | Current evidence |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Latin School of Chicago · Gold Coast / Old Town | Main early entry is JK, about 66 spaces. Conventional K/SK is attrition, so ask for Fall 2027 capacity. | About 2–3 spaces per grade in Grades 6–8; ISEE, interview, shadow, recommendations, and records. | Main entry, about 50–60 spaces; ISEE, interview, records, recommendations; shadow strongly recommended. | Fall 2027 confirmed: November 30 application; January 15 supplements/aid; upper decision February 11, younger divisions February 26. |
| Francis W. Parker · Lincoln Park | Main early entry is JK, 54 spaces; conventional K/SK–5 has historically had 0–5 attrition openings. | Main entry, up to 15 spaces; ISEE or SSAT, shadow, parent meeting, records, and recommendations. | Main entry, 25–30 spaces; ISEE or SSAT and the same visit/file structure. | Fall 2027 confirmed: December 1 application, January 8 supplements, February 26 decision. No application fee. |
| University of Chicago Laboratory Schools (Lab) · Hyde Park | Lab identifies Nursery 3 (N3)—not K—as the strongest early entry. K age cutoff is five by September 1; K openings are largely attrition. | Named as a best entry. Grade 5+ uses ISEE; middle candidates have a committee meeting. | Named as a best entry; ISEE, interview/committee meeting, recommendations, records, and parent meeting appear in the process. | Unknown / mixed: Fall 2027 application is anticipated in early September, but exact admission dates are not yet current; tuition page does publish Fall 2027 aid dates. |
| North Shore Country Day (NSCD) · Winnetka | JK is a named deadline; conventional K/SK applicants are considered where space permits. Readiness screening applies JK–1. | Own application or SAO; scores requested in Grades 6–12; recommendations, records, and shadow/interview. | Own application or SAO; required student interview, optional shadow, records, recommendations, scores; count unknown. | Fall 2027 confirmed: JK December 4; SK–12 February 1. No school bus; public transit is part of the model. |
| Lake Forest Academy (LFA) · Lake Forest | Not served; school begins in Grade 9. | Not served; school begins in Grade 9. | Day or boarding; Veracross application or SAO; interview, student/parent writing, three recommendations, two-year transcript, and SSAT/ISEE/PSAT/PreACT. | Mixed-cycle: Fall 2027 opens September 1 and deadline is January 15, 2027; lower page copy still contains 2026 references. Late applications are rolling as space permits. |
| Beacon Academy · downtown Evanston | Not served; independent high school. | Not served; independent high school. | Ravenna, shadow, student and parent interviews, three recommendations, records, and recent standardized scores. Beacon does not require ISEE specifically and asks families with no recent scores to contact admissions. | Fall 2027 confirmed: December 15 application, January 15 records, February 11 final interview/assessment, February 26 decision, March 8 deposit. |
| British International School, South Loop (BISC) · South Loop | Conventional K maps to Year 1. Nursery–Year 2 candidates have a playdate; school states no minimum test score. | Grade 6 maps to Year 7; shadow, leadership meeting, records, and teacher evaluation; test scores optional. | Grade 9 maps to Year 10; shadow and meeting; ISEE, SSAT, MAP, and PSAT are among optional scores. | Fall 2027 confirmed: January 15 application, January 22 aid, February 5 notification, March 12 contract. |
| Sacred Heart Schools Chicago · Edgewater · PK–8 | Conventional K/SK is served; candidate and parent meetings, recommendation, and portal file. Current K count unknown. | Served through Grade 8; current Grade 6 count and Fall 2027 assessment detail not public on cited page. | Not served. Its high-school placement program supports independent, Catholic, and CPS selective pathways. | Mixed-cycle: accepting Fall 2027 applications, but visible key dates remain 2025/2026. Verify every deadline. |
| Catherine Cook School · Old Town · PK–8 | Ravenna, playdate/classroom visit, parent meeting, records and recommendation; Fall 2027 capacity unknown. | Shadow/visit; current process asks Grades 5–8 for standardized results; Fall 2027 capacity unknown. | Not served. Secondary-school counseling supports the transition from K–8. | Prior-cycle: visible decision and aid dates belong to 2026–27 admission. Preserve the process shape, not dates. |
| Chicago City Day School · Lakeview · JK–8 | Fall 2027 opens September 1; K candidates visit a classroom; all openings are space-dependent. | Full-day visit, teacher recommendations, records and testing; exact capacity unknown. | Not served. Placement counseling covers independent, parochial, and selective-public options. | Fall 2027 confirmed: opening and process are current; exact closing/decision dates are not public on cited page. |
| Chicago Waldorf School · Andersonville · early childhood–12 | Kindergarten requires age five before June 1; family conversation and possible visit. Confirm classroom age model. | Grades 6–8: three recommendations, three-year records, learning documents when relevant, conversation and two full-day visits. | Three recommendations, three-year records, learning documents, conversation; shadow strongly recommended. | Prior-cycle: public application pages still identify 2026–27. Fall 2027 deadlines unknown. |
The matrix is a starting map, not a shortlist. First remove schools that do not offer a credible route into the relevant grade. Then compare the remaining schools on daily life, support, and cost.
Baker Demonstration in Wilmette and Ancona in Kenwood add different progressive K–8 choices. Baker's public process remains prior-cycle.
Ancona says its Fall 2027 timeline will be released in September 2026 and names early childhood at age three (EC3), Grade 1, and Grade 5 as main entries—not K or Grade 6. That does not rule out either grade; it changes the risk category.
One family, several systems
A shared platform is not a shared application.
| Route | Examples | What can be shared | What remains school-specific |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ravenna | Latin, Beacon, Catherine Cook; BISC aid uses Ravenna Financial Aid | One family account can manage multiple schools and delegated forms where each school enables them. | Questions, events, interview slots, supplements, deadlines, and release instructions. Do not assume submission carries over. |
| Finalsite Enrollment | Parker; Lab's high-school page names Finalsite | Account and workflow within that school's portal. | Parker and Lab are separate applications; the platform brand does not combine their files. |
| School application or SAO | North Shore Country Day; Lake Forest Academy | SAO can distribute common components to participating schools. | School supplements, interview, test policy, record years, and recommendation mix. LFA also offers its Veracross route and asks families to choose one route, not both. |
| School portal | Sacred Heart, Chicago City Day, Waldorf and others | Whatever that school explicitly permits. | Everything else. Confirm the current-cycle checklist after login. |
| GoCPS | CPS high-school programs only | One ranked public-school application. | It sends nothing to private schools. Private forms, scores, recommendations, visits, aid, and contracts remain separate. |
Catholic and international schools generally use their own systems. Save each submitted PDF and receipt.
Create a private tracker outside every portal. Start with the school, grade, cycle label, account email, and last verification date.
Track application work—records, recommendations, testing, child visit, and parent meeting—in a second group. Keep aid, decision, reply, and deposit dates together in a third. A portal is a submission tool, not the family's source of truth.
Testing without folklore
The school's actual requirement—not the group-chat average—sets the plan.
| Testing posture | Kindergarten | Grade 6 | Grade 9 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Required admissions test | None of the representative K processes here frames ISEE/SSAT as the child's task; schools use visits/playdates/readiness activities. | Latin uses ISEE; Parker uses ISEE or SSAT; Lab uses ISEE for Grade 5+; NSCD requests scores in Grades 6–12. | Latin and Lab use ISEE; Parker accepts ISEE or SSAT; LFA accepts SSAT, ISEE, PSAT, or PreACT. |
| Flexible / optional published posture | BISC says it has no minimum score; younger children have playdates. | BISC lists ISEE/SSAT/MAP/PSAT as optional where age-appropriate. | Beacon requests recent standardized results but does not require ISEE specifically; BISC scores are optional. |
| A different public test | Not relevant to this guide's K process. | Not relevant to this guide's Grade 6 process. | CPS selective enrollment uses the High School Admissions Test (HSAT). That score does not automatically satisfy a private school's stated ISEE/SSAT rule. |
The common task is not to chase one “best” test. Match the child to each school's stated requirement, then register at the correct level.
Catholic Grade 9: the HSPT site is a decision.
Saint Ignatius requires its applicants to take the HSPT there, and opens its application only after that exam. Loyola also requires testing at its campus. Woodlands ties testing at Woodlands as the first-choice school to merit consideration. Ask any other Catholic school how the shared-testing rule for young women affects application access before choosing a site.
For GoCPS selective enrollment, every Grade 9 applicant takes the HSAT, and non-CPS students upload official grades.
Choose the correct level.
ISEE levels use the grade the child is applying to. Applicants to Grades 5–6 take Lower Level, Grades 7–8 take Middle Level, and Grades 9–12 take Upper Level.
SSAT uses the student's current grade. Students currently in Grades 5–7 take Middle Level; students in Grade 8 or above take Upper Level. Never choose a level from the destination grade without first checking which test you are registering for.
Accommodations belong at the beginning of the timeline.
Official ISEE guidance says to seek accommodation approval before registration and allows roughly one to two weeks after a complete request; approval lasts 24 months and score reports are not flagged. SSAT likewise requires approval before registration and tells families to allow up to two weeks after a complete application.
Build this lead time before selecting a seat or deadline. A school's admissions accommodation and its enrolled-student support are separate questions.
The ISEE registration site now carries E3n branding. That branding change does not change the parent's basic obligation: follow the test owner's current instructions and the receiving school's current policy, not an old tutoring handout.
A visit is evidence in both directions
Let the school meet the child; let the child encounter the school.
Kindergarten: preserve the child's scale.
“Playdate,” “classroom visit,” “readiness screening,” and “evaluation” are not interchangeable, even if all are age-appropriate observations. Ask who will be present, how long separation lasts, whether a caregiver stays nearby, and how the school reads language difference, disability, shyness, or a slow warmup. Do not rehearse a five-year-old into a tiny adult.
The labels still matter. Parker names a JK–5 evaluation; NSCD a JK–1 readiness screening; BISC a playdate through Year 2; City Day a K classroom visit.
Latin's JK process uses a playdate plus a later child assessment and parent conference.
Grade 6: observe the transition, not just the polish.
A sixth grader should know why change is being considered, what they hope for, and what they fear. A shadow is useful when it reveals the pace between classes, how adults redirect students, where new children enter friendships, and what happens at lunch—not when it becomes a performance.
Before scheduling, ask whether the shadow is evaluated and how a missed day of the current school will be handled.
Grade 9: the student needs a real voice.
Latin, Parker, Lab, NSCD, LFA, Beacon, BISC, and Waldorf use varying combinations of student interview, shadow, meeting, or conversation. Latin, for example, requires a family interview and student shadow in Grades 5–11. A shadow at a Catholic school is not the HSPT or the application; treat visits as fit work unless the school labels them as required. The useful preparation is specificity: one academic moment, one contribution to community, one stretch, and honest questions about the actual program. Parents can explain context and constraints; they should not replace the teenager's account.
Never hide a fact the application asks for or coach a child to deny a need. Also do not volunteer a diagnostic archive without asking what is required, who reviews it, how privacy is handled, and what decision it informs.
Beacon, for example, explicitly asks families seeking support to submit an individualized education program (IEP), 504 Plan, learning plan, or neuropsychological evaluation where applicable. Read the actual school instruction.
Grade 9 intersection—not a public-school guide
Run GoCPS and private admission as two linked calendars.
GoCPS is a separate public application with its own test, ranking, and offer date. It closes in mid-November, before most private applications are due, so a family waiting to “see how private feels” can miss it entirely. The dated sequence is in the timeline.
| Planning item | CPS selective enrollment | Private Grade 9 | Family move |
|---|---|---|---|
| Application | GoCPS; up to six selective-enrollment programs ranked on the current official page. | Each school or its chosen private platform; no shared ranking. | Maintain two trackers and submit each independently. |
| Test | HSAT only for selective enrollment. CPS eighth graders test at school; non-CPS students use October weekend dates. | School-specific: ISEE, SSAT, another score, optional scores, or flexible policy depending on school. | Never assume HSAT substitutes. Get both accommodation processes moving where both tests are needed. |
| Selection evidence | Published formula is 50% final seventh-grade marks in four subjects and 50% HSAT; citywide and tier allocation rules apply. | Holistic files vary by school: records, recs, interviews, writing, visits, tests, mission, cohort and aid capacity. | Do not translate a CPS points estimate into private odds or vice versa. |
| Initial result | One initial-offer date in February. | Each school sets its own date, mostly in February; see the timeline. | Prepare a total-cost/commute/support comparison before offers, not during a short reply window. |
| Unknown now | Fall 2027 point totals will not be available until after initial results; later response/waitlist dates must be checked in GoCPS. | Some Fall 2027 reply dates, tuition, exact capacities, and aid budgets are not yet public. | Do not fill either blank with last cycle's number. |
The current CPS page says selective enrollment begins with 30% of seats offered citywide by score; the remaining 70% are allocated across four socioeconomic tiers. A student receives the best qualifying selective-enrollment offer according to the family's ranking. CPS also says selective enrollment does not use sibling, staff, or proximity priority.
Rank in genuine preference order. CPS places an applicant in the highest-ranked eligible program with an available seat; Choice and Selective Enrollment programs are ranked in separate categories. Lowering a real first choice does not improve the chance of receiving it, and a student is not waitlisted for programs ranked below the offer.
HSAT and final Grade 7 marks feed the point total. Fall 2027 point totals cannot exist until the February selection is complete, so prior totals describe a past applicant pool, not a child's chances.
Address and residency require separate, exact guidance. Nonresidents may apply, but CPS says a student must live in Chicago to enroll and prove residency by July 1.
K–8 schools such as Sacred Heart, Catherine Cook, and Chicago City Day publish placement support that includes both private and public pathways. Ask exactly what the counselor does, when family meetings begin, which test preparation is included, and how recommendations are coordinated. Do not assume every K–8 offers the same service.
The seat is part of fit
Kindergarten, Grade 6, and Grade 9 are three different markets.
| Entry | Where the real openings are | What the child may do | The list-building trap |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kindergarten | Conventional K may be SK or Year 1. Latin/Parker expand at JK (about 65 and about 54 new students); Lab at N3. City Day's K is space-dependent; BISC Year 1 is conventional K. | Classroom visit, playdate, readiness activity, or age-appropriate observation; parents usually meet separately. | Counting a school's pre-K/JK cohort as K availability, or building a list from schools with only attrition seats. |
| Grade 6 | Parker lists up to 15 spaces; Lab calls Grade 6 a best entry. Latin lists about 2–3, after about 10–15 at Grade 5. NSCD and K–8 schools admit as space permits; many counts are unknown. | Shadow/visit, family or student interview, teacher recommendations, records, and often ISEE/SSAT or other scores. | Treating “applications accepted” as “cohort expansion,” or assuming a K–8 school has no newcomers after elementary. |
| Grade 9 | Latin lists 50–60 spaces; Parker, 25–30. Lab calls Grade 9 a best entry. Beacon is high-school-only; LFA day/boarding. NSCD/BISC admit as space permits but publish no count. | Interview, shadow, multiple recommendations, two or three years of records, testing when required, and a more substantial student voice. | Letting GoCPS consume the private timeline, or assuming the CPS HSAT substitutes for ISEE/SSAT at a private school. |
A “main entry” is not a safety, and a small entry is not an automatic no. It is a list-construction signal. Ask one precise question: “For Fall 2027, is this grade expanding, replacing attrition, or both—and can you share the expected number of new students?” Record the answer with its date.
Dates and deadlines
The Fall 2027 calendar has its own page.
Chicago has no shared notification or reply date, and some school pages still show older cycles. Each school's application, aid, decision, and contract dates, set beside GoCPS and the HSPT, are in the Chicago admissions timeline.
Offers, wait pools, and contracts
A decision is the beginning of due diligence, not the end.
Chicago decisions arrive out of sequence across February and March, and some deposits fall due before other answers arrive. The dates are in the timeline; read every offer letter and portal on its own terms.
When an offer arrives
- Put admission, aid, mandatory fees, deposit, reply date, and contract language into one comparison—not separate emotional piles.
- Re-run commute and support questions against the child's likely schedule. Do not let a yes erase an unresolved operational fact.
- Ask only questions that could change the decision. A concise factual conversation is more useful than another general tour.
- Release places the family will not use promptly, while honoring every contract already signed.
When the answer is a wait pool
Lab says its wait pool is unranked. That is a useful warning against treating “position” as universally meaningful. Follow the school's exact instruction, send a brief update only when it is material, and secure the best workable place already available. Do not risk a real seat for a hypothetical movement.
GoCPS has its own offer and waitlist mechanics. Changing a public-school ranking, accepting an offer, or joining a waitlist can have consequences defined by the current system; consult the official results pages at the time rather than importing private-school assumptions.
Confirm whether it is refundable, when the tuition contract becomes binding, what withdrawal obligations survive, which grant is attached, and whether a later public offer changes anything contractually. This guide does not interpret an individual contract; read the document you are asked to sign and seek appropriate advice if its consequences are unclear.
The fairest process begins with a usable truth.
Chicago families are not choosing among better and worse versions of one school. The field includes a Gold Coast K–12, a Hyde Park laboratory school, a South Loop international program, and an Edgewater PK–8. It also includes a North Shore day school, an Evanston high school, and a Lake Forest day/boarding academy.
Each makes a different promise and demands a different family life. The honest organizing question is: What is this institution built to do, and can this child and family inhabit that design?
We are skeptical of lists padded with technical applications to grades that have no known expansion. A small attrition entry can yield a place, but it should not carry the same planning weight as Parker's published Grade 6 expansion or Latin's published Grade 9 intake.
Naming that difference is not discouragement. It protects a child's future from becoming a portfolio of long shots.
Parents deserve transparency about seats, support, cost, and time. They also owe schools truthful applications and realistic engagement. Schools are building cohorts, stewarding finite aid, protecting a mission, and deciding from incomplete snapshots.
Requests for recommendations, meetings, records, or assessment can serve that work. Trust becomes harder when cycle dates are stale or practical limits stay vague. Schools should update the public record as quickly and specifically as their operations allow.
The Grade 9 public/private overlap makes Chicago unusually easy to distort into a score race. CPS selective enrollment has a published scoring and ranking system; private schools use varied files and institutional judgment. Neither process defines a teenager.
Run both only when the resulting schools are lives the student might genuinely choose—not as trophies in competing systems.
The best outcome is not the most recognizable name. It is an informed yes whose daily trip, support, community, and cost remain a yes after the excitement of admission fades.
