Grade 7 and Grade 9 are not versions of one competition

Grade 7 applicants pursue an Academic Center seat through the elementary GoCPS category. They take the Regional Gifted Center reasoning exam, and prior-year grades also become points.

The current Lane profile requires at least a 2.50 GPA for testing eligibility.

Grade 9 applicants pursue a Selective Enrollment High School seat. Their 900-point total combines up to 450 points from the HSAT and 450 from final Grade 7 core marks.

The RGC exam and HSAT are different tests measuring different things.

Lane Academic Center eighth graders may continue into Lane's high school without reapplying. External eighth graders apply through Grade 9 GoCPS.

That automatic continuation means the incoming high-school class is not simply the published number of new offers.

The current CPS profile labels the prior-cycle figures as 2,141 Academic Center applicants and 122 offers, and 11,432 high-school applicants and 1,205 offers. They are descriptive—not admit rates for your child, not Fall 2027 seat counts, and not score forecasts.

A January reasoning test, spring result, and six-year implication

The Academic Center application opens September 9, 2026, at 10 a.m. and closes November 13 at 5 p.m. Initial elementary offers arrive March 12, 2027. CPS has not yet posted a Lane-specific Fall 2027 seat count or point total.

Applicants to Grades 5–8 need at least a 2.5 prior-year GPA across reading, math, science, and social science to test for an Academic Center. CPS says the same minimum applies to students with IEPs; applicable IEP or 504 testing accommodations are provided.

The English-only RGC exam measures abstract reasoning and problem-solving with new information. CPS reports composite, verbal, and non-verbal scores.

Academic Center testing typically occurs on weekends in mid-to-late January, possibly including Martin Luther King Jr. Day; exact appointments appear in GoCPS.

For Grade 7, 30% of seats are awarded citywide by points and 70% are divided equally among four address tiers. Academic Center ties break on composite, non-verbal, verbal, then lottery.

Rank only programs your family would actually accept.

Advanced work inside an adult-sized institution

Lane's published LTAC sequence places seventh graders in honors reading/writing, Algebra I or pre-algebra, honors biology, honors global issues, LTAC Academy, an elective, and PE. Biology and several electives may earn high-school credit.

Eighth graders may take high-school-credit literature, Algebra I or geometry, chemistry or aquaponics, and world studies. Lane says students can earn up to ten credits before freshman year.

“Up to” matters: placement and completed courses shape the actual total.

LTAC Academy is described as an optional study-support elective. Former LTAC students mentor new seventh graders, and Lane advertises monthly parent meetings.

Public materials do not disclose advisor load, section size, homework hours, or how often support replaces another elective.

LTAC students can join most high-school clubs and have a smaller CPS elementary athletics list, subject to interest and coach availability. That access can be exhilarating; parents should still ask about supervision, age mixing, dismissal, locker rooms, dances, digital spaces, and late travel.

The calendar is current; the point total is unknowable

High-school GoCPS and HSAT registration open September 9, 2026, at 10 a.m. and close November 13 at 5 p.m. CPS eighth graders test at school October 7. Non-CPS students can choose October 17–18 or October 24–25.

Initial offers arrive February 12, 2027.

Final Grade 7 reading, math, science, and social-science marks contribute 450 points. The reading and math HSAT together contribute 450.

CPS converts grades and scores under its published rubric; families should resolve transcript discrepancies before the deadline.

The first 30% of available seats go by total points citywide; the other 70% are distributed equally across four tiers and then by score within tier. Ties break on HSAT math standard score, reading standard score, then computerized lottery.

CPS has not published Lane's Fall 2027 available seats, applicant distribution, initial point totals, response deadline, rolling-waitlist movement, or principal-discretion handbook. Prior-cycle point totals answer what happened then, not what will happen next February.

Put Lane where the student wants Lane

CPS matches applicants to the highest-ranked program for which they qualify and which has a seat. Selective Enrollment and Choice lists are separate.

Ranking Lane lower does not improve the chance of matching somewhere else above it.

An applicant can receive one best selective-enrollment offer. A selective offer removes all other selective waitlist positions, including schools ranked higher.

Without an offer, eligible applicants join the waitlists for their applied selective programs.

CPS warns that selective programs make few waitlist offers. Accepting a later waitlist offer replaces the earlier accepted offer.

Expiration and replacement rules make calendar control more useful than speculation about Lane's list movement.

Principal discretion is a narrow, separate Grade 9 process for eligible students who applied and tested. Fall 2027 dates and materials are pending.

It should not be treated as a second guaranteed round or used to distort the initial ranking.

Capacity, not desire, controls later entry

Lane states that it reached seat capacity and did not open transfer applications for 2026–27. Its current notice says admission was limited to sixth and eighth graders entering through the selective processes.

That is the clearest available transfer signal: families should not assume Grades 8 or 10–12 will open merely because the building is large. Lane has not published a 2027–28 transfer application, vacancies, review rubric, or timeline.

A move, strong transcript, sibling, or missed initial test does not create a seat. Build the plan around the student's current or neighborhood school unless Lane formally posts a transfer process for the requested grade.

A very large school day—and a schedule page that needs confirmation

CPS lists 4,530 students in Grades 7–12 and an 8 a.m.–3:15 p.m. day. Lane’s live bell page is currently headed “Memorial Day Schedule,” so it does not cleanly establish the ordinary-day period pattern.

Ask for the current regular schedule before modeling the week.

Scale can produce anonymity and freedom at once. A student can find niche courses and friends beyond one cohort, yet may need to locate an adult, cross the building, eat, manage a locker, and reset for the next class quickly.

Advisory appears on a separate posted schedule, but the public page does not state frequency, curriculum, group size, or advisor continuity. Ask how a seventh grader, new freshman, transfer, or student returning from absence is noticed before a problem becomes a pattern.

Lane does not offer shadow days for applicants. The November 7, 2026 open house separates Academic Center and high-school sessions.

Use it to walk transitions, not just hear presentations; parking is limited and Lane encourages transit.

Honors foundations, concentrations, AP, and City Colleges

Lane requires four credits each in English, math, and science; three in social science and world language; two in fine arts and PE; one in computer science; and five college-prep electives. It also requires at least one AP course.

Freshmen choose Honors World Studies or AP Human Geography. Lane recommends honors below an 82% average on HSAT reading subtests and describes APHG as faster, more complex, and more work.

That is guidance, not a guarantee of fit or exam success.

Students select a concentration in freshman fall. Core preserves the most elective flexibility; art, music, drama, and computer science signal a four-course department sequence.

Alpha cohorts students in English, math, and science; Omega cohorts English and social science. Internal forms govern access.

AP Capstone combines AP Seminar, usually Grade 11, and AP Research, usually Grade 12, plus four other AP courses for students pursuing the diploma. Lane also encourages approved City Colleges dual enrollment.

Neither path is the same as an IB diploma, and Lane does not advertise an IB program.

A catalog is an invitation, not a schedule

Incoming math can change after the CPS Algebra Exit Exam or Lane's placement exam. Academic Center credits also affect placement.

Music students seeking an upper-level ensemble should contact directors about auditions; beginners have entry-level options.

For 2026–27, continuing students request courses in windows ordered by credits and semester-one grades. Lane explicitly says a request does not guarantee enrollment and requires a counselor meeting.

Missing the window reduces priority.

The same page publishes closed and limited courses, including examples in art, science, music, and other departments. Families should ask for denied-request counts and alternatives rather than judging breadth by titles alone.

Our inference: at Lane's scale, planning skill is part of academic access. Students who track prerequisites, forms, auditions, and windows may experience a different school from equally capable classmates who learn of them late.

Neither the current ordinary schedule nor the lived week is fully public

Lane-specific credit requirements, at least one AP, and extracurricular travel can create a dense week. Academic Center students may take high-school-credit science and math two years early.

None of those facts provides a universal homework number, and the live bell page does not currently establish an ordinary eight-period day.

Lane's catalog is unusually candid that prerequisites, challenge, homework commitment, and summer assignments vary by course, although some department pages retain stale fee language. Ask from current syllabi and actual comparable schedules.

The 31.9% chronic-absence rate is a warning against equating high outcomes with an easy lived experience. CPS says the measure includes excused and unexcused absences and cannot explain health, transportation, safety, or family causes.

Many supports exist; dosage and navigation remain the question

Lane publishes weekday peer tutoring, morning math and writing support, and scheduled after-school help in biology, chemistry, physics, social science, Spanish, art, and other areas. Times and staff can change, so verify the live schedule.

CPS identifies significantly modified curriculum programs with moderate and intensive supports at Lane, but no transition program. Those are distinct admissions pathways from the Selective Enrollment High School program and should never be collapsed into one service promise.

CPS calls the campus usable and accessible parking staff-only. Families needing physical access should trace entrances, elevators, labs, stages, gyms, bathrooms, arrival, evacuation, and after-school routes against the student's actual schedule.

Public pages do not provide counselor, social-worker, psychologist, case-manager, or nurse caseloads; appointment waits; missed service minutes; or executive-function dosage. Those numbers matter more at 4,530 students than a generic statement that help is available.

Breadth is real; access has conditions

Music includes band, orchestra, choir, piano, guitar, ukulele, songwriting, production, and sound engineering, with beginning routes as well as auditioned upper ensembles. The music concentration expects ensemble continuity plus additional study.

Visual art spans digital design, fiber arts, painting, ceramics, photography, sculpture, and portfolio pathways. Drama offers classroom and production routes.

Families should check prerequisites, materials, rehearsals, casting, portfolio expectations, and course closures.

Lane maintains a searchable student-club directory and a separate athletics site. The directory's existence is stronger evidence than an undated “100+” claim; club activity, sponsors, meeting times, team rosters, cuts, and fees need current confirmation.

For LTAC, published sports include cross-country, volleyball, flag football, basketball, track, and girls' soccer, all contingent on interest and coaches. LTAC students may join most high-school clubs, but supervision and age-appropriate access should be checked club by club.

A safe-school claim needs routes, response, and denominators

CPS currently reports 31.9% chronic absence, up three percentage points. The displayed page offers subgroup filters but not the subgroup denominators in static text.

Ask Lane what drove the increase by grade, program, and student group.

Lane operates under the CPS Student Code of Conduct, district bullying, discrimination, background-check, crisis, emergency-management, and abuse-reporting systems, plus school rules. Ask which building procedures add to those district policies.

For seventh and eighth graders, insist on age-specific answers: entry and dismissal, visitor control, restroom and locker-room supervision, interaction with older students, social media, field trips, athletic travel, and reunification. “One building” should not mean one undifferentiated safeguarding plan.

Request three years of incidents, suspensions, expulsions, police referrals, bullying findings, Title IX matters, and restorative responses with enrollment denominators and subgroup suppression explained. A count without the population and reporting rules can mislead.

Tuition-free does not mean cost-free

CPS lists buses 152, 49, 77, 94, and X49 plus the Brown Line. The school is at Addison and Western, not on a train platform.

Time the complete trip for 7:45 a.m., winter weather, an after-school departure, and service disruption.

The 2026 incoming-freshman page priced a new Ventra card at $6 and notes that it doubles as the CPS student ID. That is a prior-cohort price, not a Fall 2027 quote.

CPS does not promise a Lane-specific activity bus.

Lane is tuition-free. Real family costs may include CTA fares, supplies, calculator, device damage, instrument or art materials, athletics, uniforms, tickets, dances, travel, yearbook, and fundraising.

Lane's old department pages still display 2015–16 AP fee language, so they must not be used as current prices.

CPS provides school meals and Lane links its current menu. Ask which charges are mandatory, which waivers apply, how fee privacy works, whether equipment can be borrowed, and how trip or activity aid is requested before a deadline.

Our read

Lane is a platform, not a concierge

Lane's defining strength is combinatorial: a student can pair advanced science with orchestra, computer science with drama, a world language with athletics, or a core concentration with unusual electives. Few schools can offer that many plausible selves under one roof.

The same scale transfers work to the student. Forms, prerequisites, course windows, auditions, travel, tutoring, and adult relationships have to be actively managed.

The student who enjoys that ownership may find Lane liberating; the student waiting to be discovered may experience the same building as indifferent.
