The real fit question
Freedom inside structure

Students need growing independence and self-advocacy

Younger children explore; older students carry more of the structure

In Junior Kindergarten through Grade 3, Parker mixes exploration with direct foundational practice. The program covers reading, writing, arithmetic, science investigation, Spanish, music, visual art, drama, woodshop, movement, recess, design thinking, and projects.

Play is part of the method here, not an excuse to skip the arithmetic.

Grades 4 and 5 form a separate Intermediate School. Here children practice organization, prioritization, collaboration, reflection, and working with ambiguity.

The division serves as a deliberate bridge between the close nest of an elementary classroom and the independence expected in Middle School.

Middle School shifts the focus toward identity, belonging, responsibility, and self-advocacy, anchored by an advisor who acts as each family’s primary school contact. Parker states plainly that it wants these years free from pressure, perfectionism, competition, high-stakes testing, and grade fixation.

Five core courses sit beside arts, civic work, and student government

Upper School students take five core academic courses each semester, choosing among advanced-level options as they progress. Coursework pairs conventional study with substantial experiential projects, from mock trials and artistic production to student rocket design and launches.

Arts Ensemble brings music, dance, and drama into the schedule. Community Time provides a dedicated midday hour for graderoom, clubs, affinity groups, Morning Exercise, Civic Lab, and Student Government, while Wellness covers physical education and LifeKit.

Every Upper student belongs to both Civic Lab and Student Government, so democratic life is a required school experience rather than an extracurricular choice. Civic Lab themes progress by grade from City as Ecosystem to City as Community and Social Reformation, culminating in senior May Term, when students design and carry out a civic project.

The prior 2025–26 profile lists an unweighted GPA, no class rank, and no prizes, honors, or distinctions. It also notes that Parker offers no AP or IB courses and does not provide AP or IB exams on request, taking the stand that every course is taught at its highest level.

An eight-day cycle built around long blocks and Community Time

Parker’s live 2026–27 Upper School schedule uses an eight-day rotation. Each day begins with Arts Ensemble, followed by one 75-minute long block and hour-long classes.

Community Time claims an hour in the middle of the day, from 11:00 a.m. to noon, and Wellness meets every other day, with LifeKit included in every Upper School grade.

The prior handbook listed an 8:30 a.m. start for JK through Grade 3, 8:10 a.m. for Grades 4 through 8, and 8:00 a.m. for Upper School, with dismissals ranging from 3:10 to 3:30 p.m.

That handbook kept cellphones and smartwatches stowed away throughout the 8:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. school day. Upper students were expected to leave them in lockers or backpacks, with escalating consequences for repeat violations.

The full price, what fees cover, and the financial aid timetable

For 2026–27, tuition plus the mandatory grade fee totals $46,140 in JK and SK, $46,490 in Grades 1 through 3, $46,520 in Grade 4, and $46,970 in Grade 5. Middle School totals are $51,240 in Grade 6, $51,230 in Grade 7, and $53,330 in Grade 8.

Upper School totals are $51,420 in Grade 9, $51,440 in Grade 10, $51,230 in Grade 11, and $52,220 in Grade 12.

Grade fees cover books, classroom materials, field trips, and one class trip in Grades 5 through 12, including Washington, DC in Grade 8. Lunch, Parker PM, PLUS, private or group music, commuting, parking, outside evaluations, tutoring, therapy, optional travel, and some activity costs sit outside the published total.

The prior handbook also suggested a voluntary $3,000 Parker Fund gift per child as a fundraising request, not required tuition.

The admission and financial aid deadline is Tuesday, December 1, 2026, but the 2027–28 tuition schedule will not be published until February 2027. Families apply for assistance through Clarity.

The new price should appear before the February 26 admission decision.

Parker reports more than $6.5 million in need-based aid for 20 percent of students, with an average award of $35,000, while a separate 5 percent receive $2.1 million in tuition remission (meaning about one-quarter of students receive some support). Aid uses Clarity and carries a $60 fee, with automatic waivers for eligible families.

Parker may also help qualifying families with meals, after-school care, equipment, music, laptops, tutoring, diagnostics, trips, college costs, prom, and yearbooks.

JK, Grade 6, and Grade 9 are the three primary admission doors

Junior Kindergarten is Parker’s widest entry door, opening approximately 54 spaces. A Fall 2027 applicant must be four by September 1, 2027, which means a birth date from September 2, 2022 through September 1, 2023.

The other two structured intake years are Grade 6, which can add as many as 15 students, and Grade 9, which admits about 25 to 30 new students. A family applying outside those three doors should ask for a current opening estimate before investing heavily in the process.

All other grades depend on attrition. Senior Kindergarten through Grade 5 historically enroll zero to five children per grade, Grade 7 adds two to five, Grade 8 adds zero to two, and Grades 10 through 12 add zero to five.

Parker describes these numbers as historical ranges rather than guaranteed capacity.

Deadlines, parent conversations, student visits, and testing requirements

The published deadline for both admission and financial aid is Tuesday, December 1, 2026. Supplemental materials are due Friday, January 8, 2027, and admissions decisions come out on Friday, February 26.

Parker charges no admission application fee. Families exploring the school can attend the Parker Fest open house on Saturday, October 17, 2026, at 9:30 a.m.

The prior handbook noted an unranked wait pool and described admission preferences for siblings, employee children, children of current or former students, and children of active alumni (without guaranteeing admission).

Families begin the application online in Finalsite. After submitting, parents schedule an informal 30- to 45-minute conversation with an Admissions team member to talk about their child and what they hope to find in a school.

Student evaluations vary by age. Junior Kindergarten and Senior Kindergarten applicants schedule playgroup visits in the portal, while Middle and Upper School candidates schedule a Shadow Day through the portal.

Families applying to Grades 1 through 5 receive evaluation instructions after applying.

Applicants to Grades 6 through 12 must submit either the ISEE or SSAT, which Parker reviews as one part of a broader academic picture drawn from more than one school year; testing fee waivers are available through the financial aid office.

International applicants may apply to all grades, must demonstrate English proficiency, and must live with a parent or legally recognized guardian; TOEFL is useful rather than mandatory, and Parker can issue an I-20 after a child is admitted and enrolled.

The in-house support team, outside referrals, and accommodation boundaries

Parker’s Learning Resources team works across JK through Grade 12. Staff support students inside and outside class, conduct informal assessments, help teachers understand evaluations, monitor recommendations, and coach students toward self-advocacy.

The department also refers families outside the school for testing, tutoring, speech and language therapy, and occupational therapy. That wording matters: a referral is not the same as a service delivered by Parker, and the public page does not promise that those outside costs are covered.

Counseling includes individual and group support for transitions, social-emotional concerns, and mental-health needs. For formal accommodations, Parker’s disability policy promises individualized review and reasonable modifications; written requests go to the Principal, Associate Principal, Division Head, or a Learning Resources teacher, and should be referred within three business days.

In 2020, Parker entered a two-year Justice Department agreement arising from a 2017 discipline case involving a student with ADHD, where DOJ determined that Parker failed to make an individualized assessment and reasonable modification (which Parker disputed). The agreement required a disability policy, individualized review, and outside-led training; its two-year term has ended.

Separately, the prior handbook described a counseling-out process if support needs exceed school resources, remediation pulls a child from too much of the program, or accommodations are deemed excessive. A family with significant learning, medical, or mental-health needs should ask Parker to explain in writing what it can provide and what requires outside care.

One more piece of recent history: in 2022, a Project Veritas operative secretly recorded a Parker dean discussing the school’s LGBTQ+-affirming sex education, and an edited video spread widely. Parker defended its approach while facing online harassment, heightened security, and a bomb threat.

Follow-up reporting said sex education began in Grade 4 and that the high-school lesson at the center of the coverage was optional. That does not establish today’s curriculum, so ask for the current scope, advance notice, and opt-out rules.

Student-led clubs, campus publications, and no-cut athletics

Student activities are woven directly into the school week through Community Time. Parker advertises more than 50 Upper School clubs, 13 affinity groups, and six publications; the current clubs page lists 59 Upper School items plus 15 Student Government committees.

The Weekly, robotics, Model UN, chess, 3D printing, arts groups, and identity-based organizations all appear in the mix.

Interscholastic athletics begins in Grade 6 and operates under a no-cut policy across more than 50 teams. Roughly three-quarters of students participate (one school page reports participation above 75 percent, while the Upper page says above 70 percent), using on-campus facilities that include three gyms, a fitness center, and a turf field.

The published roster includes basketball, soccer, cross-country, track, baseball, softball, tennis, volleyball, field hockey, golf, and scholastic bowl. Football, swimming, lacrosse, and ice hockey are not listed, so ask about co-ops or outside participation if one of those sports matters to your child.

Getting to Clark and Webster, drop-off logistics, and after-school care

Parker sits at Clark Street and Webster Avenue in Lincoln Park (mailing address: 330 West Webster; main entrance: 2233 North Clark), one block west of Lincoln Park Zoo. Street parking is metered, and nearby garages and lots charge commercial fees.

CTA routes 22 Clark and 36 Broadway serve the area.

For families needing extended care, Parker PM serves Junior Kindergarten through Grade 5 until 4:30 or 6:00 p.m., one to five days a week. The PLUS program provides short afternoon enrichment courses, usually from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. Prices are not posted publicly, so availability and cost belong in the family budget before enrollment.

The campus itself may change. Parker’s August 2026 proposal calls for a new educational building, field lighting, and gradual growth of about 125 students and 30 employees over seven years, pending fundraising and city approvals.

It is a proposal, not a Fall 2027 benefit.

Our read

Parker is strongest when the freedom matches the child

Parker’s big idea is unusually visible in the week. Student government, civic work, arts, discussion, projects, and reflection are not decorative extras.

They occupy time and ask students to participate.

The same model asks something of a child. As students grow, they need to carry more structure for themselves.

A student who waits for every expectation to be spelled out may need more scaffolding than the school’s philosophy naturally provides.

How Parker tracks projects and balances a full program

Parker's progressive program asks students to manage long projects and ensembles, so ask how teachers track progress and what support Parker staff deliver.

Projects, workload and support

  1. In this grade, how do teachers track long-term projects, and how quickly do parents hear if a student begins falling behind?
  2. How do students balance five core academic courses with Arts Ensemble, Community Time, and after-school sports or clubs?
  3. What learning support is delivered directly by Parker staff, and which services require hiring an outside provider?
  4. For families receiving financial aid, which ancillary costs—such as lunch, Parker PM, laptop, or class trips—are covered by the award?
  5. What transportation and after-school options do families at our grade level typically use, and what does pickup look like after afternoon activities or athletics?
