Admissions, cost, and rhythm at a glance
How to read this table: cycle facts are dated, and published intake describes scale—not an applicant's probability of admission. Scroll horizontally on a phone to compare all six fields.

Andover and Exeter publish need-blind admission.
Choate and Hotchkiss expressly describe circumstances in which financial need can affect admission. Lawrenceville’s current institutional-aid language is domestic-focused. Across all six schools, “meets full demonstrated need” means the amount produced by the school’s methodology—not the family’s requested figure or every incidental cost.
A terminology correction
Do not call all six “Harkness schools.”
Exeter describes the table—traditionally 12 students and one teacher—as present in every classroom and Harkness as institutional culture. Lawrenceville also makes Harkness a schoolwide cornerstone but defines it through discussion, experimentation, and critical review, including laboratory design. Andover expressly names discussion, inquiry, immersive, and experiential methods that vary by teacher and discipline. Choate, Deerfield, and Hotchkiss publish collaborative and discussion-rich work without making the same universal claim.
The parent question is how participation works in the applicant’s likely courses. Ask how a reflective or slower-processing student is assessed; how teachers distinguish listening from disengagement; and how laboratory, performance, studio, and skill instruction differ from seminar discussion.
Six models in practice
The most useful distinctions are structural, not reputational.
Andover: breadth with meaningful pathway variation
Andover offers more than 300 courses and a mix of AP-designated, AP-preparatory, and school-designed work beyond AP. Ninth graders normally take five or six trimester courses, with placement shaped by prior study and demonstrated level.
There are no weekend classes, although performances, athletics, testing, and travel can occupy weekends. More than 200 new ninth graders is the only current explicit intake scale in this group. Ask how initial placement changes, how much recurring academic-skills help is available, and which weekend obligations apply to this student.
Our full Andover parent guide examines the ninth-grade week, workload, dorms, support boundaries, student survey evidence, aid, and safeguarding in detail.
Exeter: the clearest Harkness and no-AP model
Exeter’s current catalog provides sequenced requirements and describes advanced, beyond-AP, and college-level work without AP classes. Math and language placement occurs before enrollment.
Classes fall within a broad weekday window and meet on some Saturdays; that does not mean a student is continuously in class. Dorm membership typically persists, creating adult and peer continuity. Ask how Harkness enters grading, what work a five-course schedule actually generates, and how a quiet student develops participation without performance replacing thought.
Our full Exeter parent guide examines Harkness assessment, pass/no-pass ninth-grade fall, workload, dorm continuity, aid, and safeguarding in detail.
Choate: early choice, signature pathways, and class-free Saturdays
Choate says comparatively fewer diploma requirements permit earlier electives. Eight signature programs are opt-in pathways, not universal experiences; ask about selection, prerequisites, capacity, and schedule conflicts.
Choate explicitly has no Saturday classes, though athletics and activities remain. Its learning center publishes useful limits: skills coaching and testing support, but no psychoeducational testing or professional tutors. Current public pages do not cleanly explain the schoolwide AP taxonomy.
Our full Choate parent guide examines signature-program access, workload, dorms, support boundaries, aid, and safeguarding in detail.
Deerfield: transparent levels, bounded homework, developmental dorms
Deerfield’s current catalog publishes prerequisites and homework ceilings per class meeting: 50 minutes at 100 level, 60 at 200/300, and 70 at 400+, accelerated, and honors. Its hybrid advanced structure includes AP, honors, accelerated, and post-AP courses. A co-curricular is required every term.
Ninth graders begin together with roommates, 10th graders normally receive singles, and senior proctors support younger dorms. Deerfield is building toward a full-boarding model, so Fall 2027 transition details should be confirmed rather than inferred.

Hotchkiss: a common early spine and the strongest day-student room provision
Loomis Chaffee’s 70% boarding and 30% day composition deserves a separate look at evening access, dorm common rooms, weekends, transportation, and community integration. Read our full Loomis Chaffee parent guide rather than treating its operating model as interchangeable with this six-school set.
St. Paul’s is not folded into this six-school comparison because its 100% residential structure changes the questions about dorm culture, weekends, Chapel, health care, and travel. Read our full St. Paul’s parent guide as a separate operating model.
Groton is not silently folded into this six-school table because its Grade 8 start, 380-student scale, small dorms, Chapel, and tightly shared week deserve their own frame. Read our full Groton parent guide before treating it as a compact version of one of these schools.
Hotchkiss publishes a shared early humanities sequence, formal department-controlled honors placement, and increased later choice. The weekday runs later on four days, ends early Wednesday, and includes Saturday morning classes. Every student has a daily co-curricular; ninth graders must join a team in at least two seasons during their time at the school.
Roughly 96% board, yet every day student receives a room—a more concrete integration mechanism than a lounge or locker. Ask about honors capacity, current advanced-course taxonomy, and what an assigned room means in day-student practice.
Our full Hotchkiss parent guide examines the common Humanities spine, class Saturdays, workload, day-student rooms, support boundaries, aid, and safeguarding.
Lawrenceville: Harkness plus House and programmed Saturdays
Lawrenceville joins schoolwide Harkness to a grade-based House system, the school’s residential and advising community. Advisers meet students twice weekly and serve as the principal family contact. Younger students receive required executive-function and community-transition work.
The six-day rotation includes selected Saturday classes, academic programming, and community weekends, some closed to leave. Publicly displayed example dates are stale, so compare the pattern rather than repeating them. Ask how discussion participation is graded, how often educational support can meet one student, and how evening House life differs for day students.

Support boundaries
Availability is not the same as capacity, frequency, or curriculum modification.
All six publish advising, faculty help, learning support, counseling, or accommodations. Choate explicitly says its center does not conduct diagnostic testing or provide professional tutors. Hotchkiss says accommodations are individually reviewed and outside-testing applications remain a family responsibility. Lawrenceville says an IEP or 504 alone does not automatically establish eligibility and may refer families to outside evaluators. Ask how many recurring meetings one student can receive, what must be purchased externally, and what needs the school cannot sustain.
The actual week
Count obligations, not merely Saturday classes.
Andover, Choate, and Deerfield publish no academic Saturday classes. Exeter and Hotchkiss retain some. Lawrenceville uses selected Saturday class and community programming. Every school can still schedule games, rehearsals, tests, trips, required events, or closed weekends. Request three specimen student calendars—one per term—and count which Saturdays remain genuinely uncommitted after the student’s likely co-curricular path.
Afternoon participation also differs in form but is substantial everywhere: Andover allows athletics, service, and other approved activities; Deerfield and Lawrenceville require co-curriculars every term; Hotchkiss requires a daily co-curricular and a two-season team commitment for ninth graders over their enrollment. Ask how injury, disability, high-level arts, and outside commitments affect the rule.
Boarding and day integration
Observe the informal evening, not just shared enrollment.
Andover assigns day students to clusters and may permit overnights. Exeter affiliates day students with dorms. Hotchkiss assigns them actual rooms. Lawrenceville makes Houses the home base for day and boarding students. Deerfield still has day students during its announced transition toward full boarding. Choate’s public material describes a long shared day but is less explicit about a dorm-equivalent home base.
Ask day students when they actually leave, whether transport blocks evening participation, and where they spend gaps. Ask boarders whether day students remain during informal House or dorm life. A school may describe day and boarding students as integrated. Ask how many day students are still there at dinner and in the evening.
The right choice is the week a student can inhabit—not the name a family can announce.
Each school makes a coherent but different wager. Exeter and Lawrenceville place oral collaborative reasoning at the center. Andover maximizes breadth and pathway variation. Choate creates early choice and distinctive opt-in programs. Deerfield makes workload and level architecture unusually inspectable. Hotchkiss combines a common early spine, Saturday classes, and unusually concrete day-student residential inclusion.
None of those structures guarantees belonging, rigor, support, or happiness for one student. The useful comparison is whether this teenager can participate in the classroom method, recover inside the schedule, accept the afternoon and weekend obligations, ask the available adults for help, and live with the residential rules for four years.
