Exeter is not simply ‘a very hard school’
The defining feature of Exeter is not the 450-course catalog or the famous name. It is the demand to make meaning with other people around a table.
Most classes place about 12 students and one teacher around an oval Harkness table. The teacher designs the syllabus and evaluates the work, but students drive the discussion—questioning, connecting ideas, listening, and pushing the conversation forward.
Our read: the best-fit student is intellectually game, not merely accomplished. They can arrive prepared without needing to sound perfect, tolerate a classmate changing their mind, and recover from a flat discussion or an ordinary grade.
A quiet student can thrive; a fluent talker can struggle. Exeter’s own teaching materials show real variation by subject and teacher, and a teacher may track who spoke and how classmates responded, so listening, curiosity, resilience, and help-seeking matter more than volume.
The harder truth is that the intellectual method sits inside a crowded residential week. Five courses, physical education, dorm responsibilities, activities, and Saturday classes or games can make Exeter feel wonderfully alive or relentlessly ‘on.’
Prestige does not answer that fit question; your child’s daily nervous system does.
The academic load
Five courses at a time—and less freedom than it looks
The standard load is five one-credit academic courses plus physical education each term—18 credits across the year. Partial-credit music, theater, dance, and required health-and-human-development work can sit around that core.
Exeter permits limited four-course arrangements, but the catalog warns that a reduced load may affect college applications.
Fall courses are pass/no pass for all ninth graders; after that Exeter uses an 11-point A-to-E scale, with D− the minimum passing grade and a separate notation for unsatisfactory effort.
Placement starts with prior work, a new-student questionnaire, and at-home mathematics and language tests. Exeter makes the final call and can adjust a placement during the term; families cannot request a particular daily schedule or free-period pattern.
Exeter has no AP curriculum, although it administers AP exams. Its own numbering calls some 400-level courses ‘beyond AP/first-year college,’ 500-level courses first- or second-year college work, and 600/700-level courses comparable to a college major; those are curricular descriptions, not automatic college credit.
The 2025–26 profile reports an average class size of 12 and a 6:1 student-teacher ratio.
Entry year changes the runway. A ninth grader has time to learn the rotation, Harkness, and dorm life.
A tenth-grade entrant still has three years, but U.S. history, language, arts, and other diploma rules start competing for space, so ask for a written three-year plan built on probable placements.
An eleventh-grade entrant joins as college planning accelerates; that works for a student who actively wants the method, not for one whose plan depends on immediate access to the most advanced sequence, a starring role, or a varsity spot.
- Grade 9: usually English 100/210/220, mathematics, a language, biology or physics, required health, and one elective each term; Exeter recommends a 200-level history elective.
- Grade 10: usually English 310/320/330, mathematics, language, science, health, and one elective; many lowers take 300-level U.S. history.
- Grade 11: English 410/420/430 and health are fixed points; U.S. history and remaining diploma requirements often constrain the rest.
- Grade 12: two 500-level English courses, health, and a program shaped with the adviser and college office.
- One-year senior/PG: an individualized five-course program in each of three terms, two English courses, health, physical education, and U.S. history if it is still needed.
Support and care
Workload, academic support, and student well-being
In a fall 2022 school survey, 71% of responding students said they were frequently or almost always stressed by schoolwork or the academic experience. Exeter did not publish the respondent count, so treat that as a signal rather than a whole-school prevalence figure.
The useful question is not ‘Is it stressful?’ but ‘What happens next?’
Advisers meet at least weekly, act as the primary family liaison, and typically advise eight to ten students. The Learning Center advertises assignment help Sunday through Thursday evenings and access to a learning specialist.
A winter Study Skills course may be recommended after a new ninth or tenth grader’s fall performance; it takes one of the five course slots and is not a universal executive-function service.
Current Exeter pages point families to May 1, May 15, and June 1 in different places for learning-plan documents or accommodation intake, while standardized-testing accommodations have a separate July 1 transfer date. Do not choose among those dates yourself; ask the school, in writing, which deadline controls for 2027.
Lamont Health and Wellness Center is open 24/7 while school is in session and students are on campus, with physicians, physician assistants, nurses, health aides, and 23 overnight beds. Exeter says most medication is stored and administered there, although some may be approved for self-administration.
On-campus care is free, but families need insurance valid in New Hampshire. Labs, imaging, prescriptions, specialists, emergency departments, and hospitalization may be billed to insurance or the family.
Exeter says it will contact a parent when off-campus care is recommended but cannot verify whether a plan will pay. There is no school domestic insurance plan.
CAPS lists seven counselors and two psychiatric providers, confidential individual therapy without a fee, group support, and dorm consultation for boarding and day students.
Exeter’s safeguarding history matters. In a 2018 community letter, the school apologized and accepted responsibility after external reviews identified credible historical sexual-misconduct allegations and institutional failures.
In January 2023, a former mathematics teacher received a minimum 12-year sentence after pleading guilty to offenses involving a student between 2014 and 2016. These are documented events, not a claim about every student’s current safety.
Current policy: Exeter offers direct, anonymous Maxient, and third-party EthicsPoint reporting; lists police and HAVEN as partners; prohibits sexual interaction between employees and students; and says employee and adult-household background checks recur every five years. Faculty receive annual code training, while staff receive it every three years.
A trustee-approved disclosure document says allegations are reported to police and under-18 matters to New Hampshire child-protection authorities.
Campus life
Dorms, day students, and the daily rhythm
Exeter houses more than 800 boarders in 26 dorms and houses and reports 66 faculty living alongside them. The current family FAQ describes 18 larger dorms of 30 to 60 students and eight houses of 7 to 26, with one to five resident faculty depending on size.
Two houses are all-gender. Students of different grades live together and most remain in the same dorm from year to year.
Housing assignments arrive at the end of August, and a student who wants a change ordinarily requests it in spring for the following year. Weekends are not an empty campus: Exeter advertises roughly 150-plus clubs and organized activities, and sports frequently compete on Saturdays, though a long list is not a participation guarantee.
Every day student affiliates with a dorm, can use it until class check-in, and has access to a day-student lounge and, often, a library carrel. Exeter says day students may eat three meals on campus, spend weekends in the dorm, and host boarding classmates.
Affiliation opens a door into residential life; it does not erase the difference between sleeping in the building and driving home, and Exeter does not advertise a daily commuter bus, so model early drop-off, late practice, and Saturday commitments.
Day eligibility is geographic. Some nearby New Hampshire and Massachusetts towns require day status; residents of a wider published list may choose day or boarding once at application.
Check your exact address with Admissions before planning around a boarding place.
In 2025–26 Exeter instituted a policy requiring phones to be stored completely out of sight during required appointments, including class, labs, and assemblies. The school’s May 2026 account says phones remain allowed at meals, on transportation to games, in clubs, and at optional gatherings.
It is a focused-attention policy, not a campuswide ban; nighttime and dorm rules sit in the handbook, which is not public.
Exeter uses Orah for leave at least in some situations: its 2026 Family Weekend page tells a student to initiate a pass and a parent to approve it by email.
The school advertises free break transportation to Boston Logan, Manchester-Boston Regional Airport, and New York City, with more limited service at opening. Detailed schedules live behind myExeter; flights, hotels, unaccompanied-minor fees, and rescue plans for missed connections remain family costs and family work.
Afternoon program
Afternoons: 56 interscholastic teams and the arts
Exeter’s athletics program operates 56 interscholastic teams across 23 sports, with 70% of students participating in at least one sport. Teams generally meet six days a week, with many contests on Wednesday and Saturday.
Ninth graders complete physical education in all three terms through a team, a physical-education course, dance, or eligible mainstage theater work. Private lessons cost extra, with partial support for one set of lessons for aid recipients.
Cost and aid
Tuition, all-in costs, and financial aid
The published 2026–27 baseline is $71,797 for boarding tuition or $56,077 for day tuition, plus $900 in estimated books and supplies. That establishes a starting cost of $72,697 for boarders and $56,977 for day students before personal expenses.
Add a required laptop, insurance, travel, clothing, personal spending, sport-specific equipment, optional laundry or shipping, private lessons, and uncovered off-campus health care. A qualifying international boarder’s known 2026–27 baseline becomes $75,292 after books and the $2,595 school plan, still before travel and personal costs.
The application costs $60; Clarity costs $65 if a family applies for aid, unless its own waiver applies.
Exeter says admission is need-blind, it meets 100% of demonstrated need with grants rather than merit awards, and 49% of students receive aid. It also reports more than $1 million in non-tuition support for needs such as books, laptops, music, travel, and off-campus programs.
‘Demonstrated’ need is Exeter’s calculation.
The tuition-free initiative applies to accepted students from families with income below $150,000 who live and work in the United States, receive only W-2 income, and have assets Exeter considers consistent with income. It is not a universal $150,000 cutoff for business owners, freelance earners, complex assets, or every family at exactly the threshold.
Aid is due January 15 through Clarity. Exeter expects both legal parents and relevant stepparents to disclose resources through separate household applications and may assign earning capacity to a nonworking parent.
Non-U.S. families submit foreign income and tax documents with originals and official translations. If aid may be needed in a later year, apply now; Exeter says later aid is rarely available without a significant change in circumstances.
Admissions process
Applying for 2027 entry: the January 15 deadline
One deadline governs the entire process: January 15, 2027. By this date, the Gateway application, required interview, recommendations, transcripts, testing, and financial-aid materials are due.
Decisions are released on March 10.
For 2027–28 entry, the Candidate Profile can begin in Gateway to Prep Schools as early as July. Exeter emails portal credentials within 24 hours after submission, and Gateway opens its recommendation and transcript portion in October.
The $60 Gateway fee is the same for domestic and international applicants. A waiver is available on Gateway’s payment screen to applicants intending to seek aid.
The portal contains two student essays of 200 to 500 words and a parent statement. Recommendations come from the current principal or counselor, current English and mathematics teachers, and an adult who can address character and community impact; a special-interest recommendation is optional.
Transcripts for the current and prior year must come directly from the school through Gateway, with English translations where needed. Exeter says it will not accept applicant-sent transcripts or recommendations.
Every applicant must complete one interview by January 15, in one of three ways: an on-campus conversation, an online conversation, or recorded responses to school-supplied questions. Testing is required and grade-specific; the rules are listed below.
Exeter publishes no admit rate or seat count by grade.
School-issued translations are needed for non-English records. The English-proficiency recommendation depends on the student’s language and recent schooling, not passport alone.
After admission, I-20 instructions go out in late April and processing begins in early May. Public pages do not promise where a student can stay for every closure, so put visa lead time, adult U.S. contacts, break housing, and a failed-connection plan in writing before depositing.
For one-year seniors and postgraduates, Exeter says 10% to 15% of the senior class is new each year and that most one-year students are PGs. They take five courses per term, engage in the full program, receive college counseling, and can earn an Exeter diploma.
Exeter says PG applicants generally show A/B work in a strong later high-school program and significant extracurricular success.
For 2026–27, a $2,595 international injury-and-sickness plan is required for categories including F-1/J-1 students, dual citizens, and students whose primary residence is overseas.
- Applying to grade 9: Upper Level SSAT or ISEE, taken no earlier than January 15, 2026 and sent directly by the testing company.
- Applying to grade 10 or 11: one of SSAT, ISEE, PSAT/NMSQT, SAT, PreACT, or ACT, also no more than one year old at the deadline; score-delivery rules depend on the test.
- Applying as a one-year senior or PG: one of PSAT, SAT, PreACT, or ACT; an official score report can be uploaded, emailed, included on an official transcript, or sent by the testing agency.
- School codes: ISEE/SAT 300185, SSAT 5764, ACT 8174; TOEFL 8128.
- For a student whose primary language is not English and who has not spent the last two years at an English-speaking school, TOEFL, IELTS, or Duolingo is strongly recommended, not listed as required. The Character Skills Snapshot is optional.
Choose Exeter for the table, not for the halo
Exeter offers something real and unusual: intellectual life built around other teenagers’ minds. The course depth is substantial, adults live in the residential community, the arts and athletics matter, and need-based aid can make the school possible for families who would otherwise walk away.
The trade is exposure. Your preparation, ideas, uncertainty, time management, dorm habits, and willingness to seek help all become visible.
For a student who experiences that visibility as invitation, Exeter can be liberating. For one who experiences it as permanent evaluation, the same school can become exhausting.
Harkness, counseling and weekend permissions at Exeter
Exeter's Harkness classes and residential rules shape every day, so ask how quiet students are drawn in and how counseling and permissions work.
Harkness, health and rules
- In Harkness discussions, how do teachers draw in a student who understands the reading but hesitates to speak?
- For a student taking five courses alongside athletics or arts, how do they structure homework and evening commitments?
- If our child needs academic accommodations, which deadline and documentation standard control for 2027, and who verifies that approved accommodations reach every teacher?
- What are routine counseling wait times, session caps, parent-notification thresholds, medical-leave criteria, and the point at which a student must use off-campus care?
- What is the current permissions matrix for weekend, driver, overnight, and town leave?
- Does our exact status trigger the international injury-and-sickness plan, what exclusions and deductibles apply, and how do prescriptions or ongoing specialists transfer to New Hampshire?
