A girls’ school in the classroom, the dorms, and every leadership post

Porter’s admits qualified students who identify as girls. Its mission is to educate young women to become informed, bold, resourceful, and ethical global citizens, and because students hold every visible campus role, leadership practice is built into classes, clubs, athletics, traditions, and dorm life.

The school says its program focuses on girls and women, and it recognizes that enrolled students may later understand their gender differently. It lists a trans and nonbinary affinity group.

Public pages do not explain housing, bathrooms, names, pronouns, or athletics for gender-diverse enrolled students, so families who need that clarity should ask for the current practice in writing.

Mastery, trimesters, and the Grade 11 trip

Classes average 12 students, with a 6:1 student-to-faculty ratio, across more than 100 course offerings. Porter’s uses a mastery-based design rather than a traditional sit-down final exam.

Students share the work in public, in Demonstrations of Learning: projects, presentations, and performances.

The year runs on trimesters. Grade 9 opens with an interdisciplinary humanities course joining English and history, Grade 10 builds foundations, Grade 11 centers on global citizenship, and Grade 12 adds work experiences.

Because a subject is not always taken every term, Porter’s offers REPS for mathematics during an off trimester and LIFT OFF for language practice.

In Grade 11, every student takes a required full-trimester global inquiry course, with international travel to examine a regional problem. School biographical materials describe the trip as a graduation requirement provided at no cost to students.

Phone rules, curfew, and weekend leaves

Phones stay in bags during the academic day, generally from 8:00 a.m. to 3:20 p.m.; on Wednesday that restriction ends at 12:35 p.m. Evening study hours run Sunday through Thursday from 7:45 to 9:15 p.m. Grades 9 and 10 study under supervision in the dining hall Monday through Thursday, while older students study in their rooms with doors open or in approved spaces.

Phones stay outside bedrooms and out of use during study hours, and academic devices are not for social use then. Specific permission is possible, and students still need phones for off-campus safety and location reporting, so this is managed access rather than a phone-free campus.

Sunday through Thursday, students check in by 10:00 p.m. and remain in their dorms until sunrise. Lights-out is 10:30 p.m. for Grades 9 and 10 and 11:00 p.m. for Grades 11 and 12.

Grades 9 and 10 stop using devices after 10:00 p.m. Older students stop calls and devices after 10:30 p.m.

Each dorm has full-time house directors; the handbook says these adults live and work with students and are available in the evenings. Curfew check-in may be with a house director or an on-duty affiliate.

Weekend curfew is generally 11:00 p.m. Off-campus day trips and overnights need approval from parents, hosts, and house directors, and an adult host must be present. The Orah system records off-campus movement and permissions, and under the current handbook a student away from campus on a weekend must check in at least every three hours.

The Student Life office runs weekend shuttles to local shopping, dining, entertainment, and museums.

Day students receive on-campus storage and lounge space, may eat meals throughout the week and weekends, and can remain from early morning through evening activities. The school encourages Saturday-night day-student sleepovers, and day students also attend some required dinners and speakers.

Laundry machines are available without charge. Families may also purchase outside laundry service.

Afternoons: mandatory sports and Wednesday games

Every student takes part in an afternoon activity, a co-curricular program, or a team every day. The handbook also requires at least one interscholastic team offering during each school year.

Practices commonly take two hours on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday. Games often fall on Wednesday and Saturday, which is what moves a visit, a flight, or a family weekend.

Arts span visual art, film, photography, ceramics, art history, dance, drama, and music. Private music lessons and riding are optional paid extras.

Learning support, the infirmary, and the 24-hour pickup

The Teaching and Learning Center (TLC) provides academic support and helps students build self-advocacy. A formal accommodation needs current documentation and a committee review.

A request submitted after the school year starts takes about one month to evaluate, and it is not retroactive.

A previous IEP or 504 plan does not automatically determine Porter’s support. Learning and ADHD evaluations generally must be recent, with tighter requirements for psychological documentation.

Porter’s does not fundamentally alter its program. It also does not pay for personal aides, equipment, private transportation, outside tutoring, counseling, testing, or coaching.

Families retain those costs and coordination. Re-enrollment is not automatic.

The handbook says the school assesses whether it can continue meeting a student’s needs. Family conduct can also affect re-enrollment.

Health and emotional care center on the Colgate Wellness Center: an eight-bed infirmary and 24/7 nursing coverage while school is in session. The team includes nurses, an advanced practice clinician, a medical director, and three licensed therapists, with a counselor on call around the clock.

The current guide describes short-term and ongoing counseling, an on-call counselor, outside referrals, and a consulting psychiatrist. Psychiatric consultation carries an additional fee.

Most on-campus medical and counseling services are included in tuition. Some diagnostics, medications, psychiatric care, outside appointments, transport, and uncovered services remain family expenses.

Counseling is confidential within legal and safety limits. Suspected abuse, serious self-harm risk, or danger to others can require parent or authority involvement.

A student taking psychiatric medication needs an ongoing counselor connection and a regular prescriber. The school may require an evaluation or a leave when it believes campus safety or care capacity is exceeded.

Every boarder must identify an emergency adult within roughly 300 driving miles. That adult must collect the student within 24 hours when required.

Infirmary stays are normally limited to 48 hours.

A former science teacher pleaded guilty in state court to second-degree sexual assault involving a student. In January 2014, he received a suspended ten-year sentence after 18 months and probation.

Reporting at the time said the school fired him when administrators learned of the conduct. A counselor reported concerning conversations and messages involving other students to Connecticut child-protection authorities.

That case is historic, not evidence of current conduct, but it is fair to ask what changed afterward in hiring, supervision, communications monitoring, boundary training, and reporting.

Separately, in 2008 a family sued Porter’s after alleged bullying, medical-leave disputes, and discipline; coverage at the time also reported the school’s position that the student had violated academic rules. The accounts are contested and are not a measure of present culture, but they make medical-leave authority and anti-bullying response reasonable questions.

Tuition, the all-in budget, and financial aid

The latest posted rates are the 2026–27 figures: boarding tuition $79,900 and day tuition $62,000.

The school estimates another $1,000–$2,000 annually for typical extras. Its list includes insurance, books, supplies, a laptop, field trips, ring, athletic items, and an international fee.

A required laptop is another family cost. Porter’s strongly recommends a Mac because some programs are Mac-native.

Its emergency loaner is limited to about 14 days. That makes the prior published boarding benchmark $77,800–$78,800 before family travel, guardianship, outside care, uncovered medical bills, visas, personal spending, and optional services.

The handbook requires tuition-refund insurance for families on a payment plan. It is optional for families who pay in full before August.

The public domestic and international health-insurance guides name 10- and 12-month school plans. International students normally enroll in the school health plan, with limited employer-plan exceptions.

For 2026–27, Porter’s says 44% of students receive aid and $5.7 million is distributed. Current need-based aid uses Clarity and requires a new application each year.

Both households and stepparents disclose financial information. Later aid requests face limited available funds.

The school says continuing aid can remain when need continues, but award size may change with finances and tuition.

Merit scholarships include Trustee Scholarships of $5,000 to $20,000, and every new applicant is evaluated automatically. A $5,000 Sarah Porter legacy award is for specified relatives of alumnae.

International applicants are not eligible for need-based financial aid unless the student holds a U.S. passport and the family files U.S. taxes. International students remain eligible only for limited merit scholarships.

Fall 2027: deadline, interview, and tests

The application deadline is January 15, the same day as the Clarity financial aid deadline. Admission decisions arrive on March 10, revisit programs run through April 9, and the enrollment decision is due April 10.

Porter’s and TABS currently list Grades 9–12, and the application and athletics forms also accept entry in grades 9 through 12. The 2026–27 new-student page schedules programming for new students entering Grades 10, 11, and 12.

Current directories stop at Grade 12. No official page describes a postgraduate program.

Families should treat PG entry as unavailable unless the admission office states otherwise in writing.

Every applicant must complete an interview. A campus visit takes about two hours, a student-led tour plus an admission interview, and weekday appointments open in mid-September.

Virtual interviews by Zoom or WeChat are available for distant and international applicants. An in-person visit is not required for admission.

The application requires transcripts from the current year and the two years before that, and a recent graded humanities paper. Recommendations come from current math, humanities, and school-leadership adults.

For most applicants, SSAT, ISEE, SAT, or state testing is optional.

The school offers no formal ESL or ELL program. Its published TOEFL thresholds rise for Grades 11 and 12, reflecting the heavier language demands facing older transfers.

Students who are not native English speakers generally need TOEFL before an interview. Mainland China applicants also need Vericant by January 1 unless they are living and studying in the United States.

The school waives TOEFL after two academic years in the United States or an American school. It also waives TOEFL for English-first-language United States expatriates.

Porter’s defines an international student by residence outside the United States or need for F-1 status. Citizenship alone does not determine the support category, and Porter’s generally does not admit midyear international students because enrollment is full.

The school supports I-20 and visa processing, early arrival, first-year local host matching, and international advising. It also supports convalidation, local break transport, and summer storage for three boxes or bags.

Getting to Farmington, and the departure you should not book early

The campus is in Farmington, Connecticut, about nine miles from Hartford and roughly 110 miles from both New York City and Boston. Bradley International Airport and the Hartford rail and bus stations are the local connections.

The school offers break shuttles to Bradley and to the Hartford bus and train stations. Families arrange and pay for verified car services to major metropolitan airports.

When you book a break, the rule is strict: never book a departure before the academic day ends. Porter’s break transportation does not depart early.

A Demonstration of Learning day may end at 3:30 p.m.

The handbook says dorms remain open for 24 hours after a break starts, and boarders normally return by 7:00 p.m. on the final day. For calendar planning, the prior benchmark scheduled November Break for November 21–30, Winter Break for December 17–January 4, and Spring Break for March 3–21.

The school points families to an outside paid guardian and unaccompanied-minor service.

Our read

Clear rails, by design

Porter’s offers a coherent girls-centered education, not merely a girls-only campus. Leadership, public work, community roles, athletics, and global study reinforce that design.

The residential program has meaningful adult and day-student integration. It also asks students to accept extensive structure around phones, study, curfew, movement, activities, and weekends.

For the student who likes clear rails, that may feel reassuring; for another, it may feel tight.

Tuition, trimesters and safeguarding at Miss Porter's

Miss Porter's is highly residential, so ask about the trimester schedule, transfer credits, boundary training and who can collect your daughter quickly.

Academics, cost and safety

  1. What is the updated tuition for the year our daughter would enter, and what are the exact costs for laundry, music lessons, riding, and health insurance?
  2. How does the trimester schedule handle course sequencing and skill retention for math and languages during an off term?
  3. For a transfer student, can we see a written credit audit and graduation map before signing an enrollment contract?
  4. What credit-bearing on-campus alternatives exist if a student cannot participate in the Grade 11 international travel experience?
  5. What specific boundary training, communication monitoring, and reporting procedures does the school maintain for faculty and residential staff?
  6. Who can collect our daughter within 24 hours if she is sick or displaced, and how do we arrange a guardian if no one nearby can?
