The family map
Boston distance is measured at dismissal, not on Sunday morning
| School zone | Schools in this comparison | The family-week question |
|---|---|---|
| Cambridge / Charles River | BB&N · Boston University Academy | Which campus, transit line, and late activity belongs to this grade? |
| Back Bay / Longwood / Fenway | Commonwealth · Winsor · Boston Latin | Can the student navigate city transit and the variable end of day? |
| West and southwest | Roxbury Latin · Nobles · Milton | Does the route work after practice—and from both households? |
| Northwest | Belmont Hill | Is the school bus, MBTA connection, or five-day option actually reliable? |
| MetroWest | Dana Hall | Is Wellesley a day-school commute or is the family choosing boarding? |
| South Shore | Thayer | What happens after the 4 p.m. bus or a missed Red Line connection? |
Run the trip during the school week. Include the walk to the stop, winter weather, traffic after an event, the late bus, a sick-day pickup, and the second home. A transportation page proves a route exists. It does not prove the route preserves sleep, activities, or a workable family evening.
The last usable bus is more revealing than the route map
| School | Current public evidence | What remains uncertain |
|---|---|---|
| Milton | Middle and Upper routes currently offer a 6 p.m. departure | Fall 2027 routes, price, capacity, and missed-bus recovery |
| Dana Hall | Boston/Newton currently has 4 and 6:15 p.m.; several routes have 6:15 | Which stop and direction serve this family next year |
| Belmont Hill | 4:55 p.m.; 5:30 on game days | Transport after later rehearsals, practices, and events |
| Thayer | Normal departure is 4 p.m. | The family owns transport after another school commitment |
| Nobles | 2026–27 Boston and South Shore were round-trip; some routes morning-only | Public detail and return times for the coming cycle |
| Winsor | The accessible route sheet is from 2024–25 and had no activity bus | The complete current private-bus plan |
These are planning clues, not Fall 2027 guarantees. Verify the route, stop, seat, price, early return, late return, one-way option, aid, and backup in writing.
An application is not an opening
K, Grade 6, and Grade 9 require three different lists
| School | Kindergarten | Grade 6 | Grade 9 |
|---|---|---|---|
| BB&N | About 8; Beginner is much larger at 32 | About 20 | About 45 |
| Roxbury Latin | None | None; school begins Grade 7 | About 12–14 |
| Boston Latin | None | None; school begins Grade 7 | Capacity-dependent exam-school invitations |
| Nobles | None | None; school begins Grade 7 | About 65 on historical averages |
| Winsor | None | Real cohort; school also opens Grade 5 | Real cohort; count unpublished |
| Milton Academy | About 24 | About 13 | Day and boarding entry; count unpublished |
| Belmont Hill | None | None; school begins Grade 7 | About 20 |
| Commonwealth | None | None | Designed front door |
| Dana Hall | None | Day-school entry | Day or boarding entry |
| Thayer | None | Real Middle School entry; count unpublished | Real Upper School entry; count unpublished |
| BU Academy | None | None | Designed front door |
These are planned openings, historical averages, or clearly described entry routes—not acceptance rates. They do not reveal applications, offers, yield, siblings, employee children, aid demand, or wait-pool movement. BB&N is unusually transparent about approximate openings; several peers do not publish counts.
Four meanings of “boarding”
A bed on campus does not tell you what happens on Saturday
| School | Residential model | What the family is choosing |
|---|---|---|
| Nobles | About 48 five-day boarders | A day-school-centered week; students go home for weekends |
| Belmont Hill | Up to about 27 five-day boarders | A small boys’ weekday home; dorm closes Friday evening |
| Dana Hall | Seven-day girls’ boarding from Grade 9 | A full residential week within a day-and-boarding school |
| Milton | About half the Upper School boards | A substantial coed residential community integrated with day students |
| All other schools here | Day only | A workable daily commute and dependable late-day plan |
Five-day boarding is not “boarding lite.” It creates a weekly handoff, two travel days, and a recurring shift between school and home. Full boarding brings weekend programming, leave, dorm duty, health care, roommate life, and break travel. Day students at residential schools need to ask which evenings and weekends they can join—and how they get home.
If the child wants boarding as the center of school life, compare Boston-area options with our New England boarding guide. Do not add a dorm merely to rescue a day-school list with an impossible commute.
Look inside the timetable
The important differences are structural, not promotional
Small does not mean the same thing twice
Commonwealth’s roughly 163 students share a compact high-school-only world, regular assembly, student jobs, city facilities, and a volume of work the school itself acknowledges. BUA’s roughly 225–235 students begin with a defined high-school curriculum, then take increasing Boston University coursework. Roxbury Latin is also small, but stretches across six years and expects a broad boys’ school life. They create different hypotheses about adult access and social scale; actual student experience remains a visit question.
Gender is a daily educational choice
Winsor and Dana Hall organize school around girls. Roxbury Latin and Belmont Hill organize it around boys. Families often choose these models hoping to change leadership, classroom participation, friendship, ritual, or athletics. The model does not guarantee any of those outcomes. Ask the student what feels freeing, what feels narrow, and how gender-diverse and LGBTQ+ students experience the actual school.
Public scale and private breadth solve different problems
Boston Latin offers advanced courses, arts, athletics, and a vast club ecosystem without tuition. BB&N, Nobles, Milton, and Thayer package broad academics and required or strongly expected afternoons inside smaller independent-school systems. Compare course placement, cuts, counseling access, transit, and the child’s likelihood of using the opportunity—not the length of each catalog.
Advanced-course labels need translation
AP, honors, advanced, school-designed, and university course are not interchangeable promises. Ask for this child’s starting placement, prerequisites, section caps, scheduling conflicts, movement rules, and the actual highest sequence completed by comparable students. A course title proves existence, not access or a healthy load.
| School | Current advanced-course read | Do not assume |
|---|---|---|
| BB&N | AP, Honors, and Advanced; five core courses typical | A sixth core or online course fits automatically |
| Roxbury Latin | AP-free since 2024–25; Honors and Advanced work | AP-free means a lighter pace |
| Boston Latin | 29 AP offerings; published total-course cap | Every listed AP is available in one student’s schedule |
| Nobles | 15 APs; most students take no more than five, mainly later | More APs is the expected or healthiest route |
| Winsor | Profile says 13 APs; its own category breakdown does not reconcile | The headline count is error-free |
| Milton | One AP-designated course; otherwise Honors, Accelerated, Intensive, and Advanced | A small AP count means a low academic ceiling |
| Belmont Hill | 22 APs plus post-AP and other advanced work | Inventory establishes placement or balance |
| Commonwealth | AP and AP-equivalent courses coexist | An AP-equivalent label is identical to an AP course |
| Dana Hall | Live page says 19 APs; dated profile says 18 | Pages from different years share one denominator |
| Thayer | 19 APs plus Honors, college-prep, and fundamentals levels | A sixth course needs no permission |
| BU Academy | Honors/no tracking, then real BU courses and a senior thesis | University access is unlimited or an AP-free policy is stated |
Our conditional read
What each school contributes to a thoughtful shortlist
BB&N: Cambridge and Watertown
Entry shape: Beginner 32; K 8; Grade 6 20; Grade 7 25; Grade 9 45.
The broadest early-to-upper-school route in this set, spread across three academic campuses and a separate athletic site. BB&N works best when the family values breadth and can manage division moves, a strong afternoon program, and the real transportation week. Read the full BB&N guide.
Roxbury Latin: West Roxbury
Entry shape: Grade 7 about 42–45; Grade 9 about 12–14.
A small boys’ school with unusually low relative tuition, need-blind admission, demanding academics, broad participation, spiritual practice, and a substantial Grade 7 doorway. The price is not an automatic yes; the boy still has to want this particular all-in community. Read the full Roxbury Latin guide.
Boston Latin: Fenway / Longwood
Entry shape: Grade 7 and Grade 9 through the BPS exam-school process.
The only tuition-free school in this comparison and the largest by far. It offers tremendous academic and activity breadth, but eligibility, the 70% GPA and 30% MAP formula, Boston residency, scale, Latin, and citywide transit are part of the bargain. Read the full Boston Latin guide.
Nobles: Dedham
Entry shape: About 55 Grade 7 and 65 Grade 9 places on historical averages.
Mostly a coed day school, with roughly 48 students who live on campus during the week and normally go home every weekend. The program asks for broad participation across a long day. Five-day boarding solves some commutes but creates a Friday-and-Sunday family trip. Read the full Nobles guide.
Winsor: Longwood
Entry shape: Grades 5, 6 and 9 are real cohorts.
A small girls’ day school with an urban campus, serious academics, broad participation, and a group-style student conversation in admission. Compare Grade 6 and Grade 9 as different social entries, then test whether the student actively wants a girls’ community. Read the full Winsor guide.
Milton Academy: Milton
Entry shape: K about 24; Grade 6 about 13; Upper School day through Grade 10 and boarding through Grade 11.
One institution contains a K–8 day school and an Upper School that is roughly half day and half boarding. Those divisions require separate reads. Upper School day and boarding students share classes and activities, but they do not live the same evening or weekend. Read the full Milton Academy guide.
Belmont Hill: Belmont
Entry shape: About 50 Grade 7 and 20 Grade 9.
A boys’ school whose five-day residence holds no more than about 27 students and closes every weekend. The model can give a far-flung student a stable school week. It is not conventional seven-day boarding, and Grade 9 arrives during the final Middle School year. Read the full Belmont Hill guide.
Commonwealth: Back Bay
Entry shape: Grade 9 is the clear front door.
A high-school-only community of roughly 163 students in two brownstones. Discussion, city facilities, student jobs, trips, and a school-acknowledged high volume of work make a distinctive week. Families should test adult access and the social experience rather than infer either from size. Read the full Commonwealth guide.
Dana Hall: Wellesley
Entry shape: Grade 6 day; Grade 9 day or seven-day boarding.
A girls’ school where middle-school day life, upper-school day life, seven-day boarding, and serious riding are related but separate propositions. It is the clearest full-week residential option here, and the only one with a substantial on-campus equestrian program. Read the full Dana Hall guide.
Thayer Academy: Braintree
Entry shape: Grade 6 and Grade 9; seat counts unpublished.
A coed day school with distinct Middle and Upper School operating systems. Grade 6 is more structured; Grade 9 adds free blocks, placement choices, and a required afternoon program. The Red Line can help, but the activity day and bus cutoff still need a backup plan. Read the full Thayer Academy guide.
Boston University Academy: Boston University campus
Entry shape: Grade 9 designed start; later transfer routes exist.
A high-school-only program of roughly 225 students: a classical liberal-arts foundation followed by increasing Boston University coursework. It suits a teenager who wants early-college responsibility. University access is sequenced and placed—not an unlimited catalog pass. Read the full Boston University Academy guide.
Support has a job description
Ask who does what, when, and at what limit
A caring adviser, a learning specialist, a school counselor, a paid tutor, and an outside therapist do different jobs. Independent schools decide which accommodations and services they can provide. Boston Latin operates within public-school IEP and Section 504 systems. Those are different legal and practical starting points.
| Parent need | Ask the school to show | Do not infer |
|---|---|---|
| Reading or writing remediation | Method, trained provider, minutes, group size, progress measure | “Learning support” means direct remediation |
| Executive function | Scheduled coaching, adult caseload, class missed, fading plan | Advising provides individual skills instruction |
| Accommodation | Documentation standard, decision maker, implementation, appeal | A current plan transfers automatically |
| Mental health | Urgent access, recurring-care boundary, referral, re-entry | A school counselor supplies ongoing therapy |
| Advanced learner | Placement evidence, caps, conflicts, movement, missed sequence | The top course will fit this student’s schedule |
| Boarding student | Evening adult, medication, overnight response, leave, family contact | Daytime support automatically covers residential life |
Several schools publish boundaries worth taking literally
| School | What current or latest public material establishes |
|---|---|
| BB&N | The latest public prior-cycle handbook requires current documentation and excludes fundamental alterations; short-term tutoring is reviewed and on-campus access is limited. |
| Roxbury Latin | A learning specialist and faculty or peer tutoring are current; a prior counseling-referral sentence disappeared from the live page and should be reconfirmed. |
| Boston Latin | IEP and Section 504 duties apply; drop-in clarification and a committed 20-Saturday math program are different services. |
| Nobles | Academic specialists, peer tutors, counselors, and outside referrals are described; eligibility, dosage, and a formal service ceiling are not public. |
| Winsor | The learning specialist interprets evaluations and decides whether classroom accommodations are warranted; no specialist-remediation promise is public. |
| Milton | Academic-skills and counseling resources are real; public pages do not define a complete qualification or curricular-modification ceiling. |
| Belmont Hill | Weekly learning-specialist meetings depend on school judgment; counseling is short-term with referral for more extensive care. |
| Commonwealth | The school offers a “limited menu of accommodations”; Homework Project is supervised study, while extra tutoring can cost separately. |
| Dana Hall | One learning specialist per division is public; formal ESL/ELL is not offered, and service dosage or remediation is not promised publicly. |
| Thayer | Hale Center describes direct one-to-one and small-group support, but eligibility, dosage, fees, and guarantees remain unpublished. |
| BU Academy | Support is provided when appropriate and possible within the program; BU-course accommodations use a second university system. |
Place the proposed service inside a sample week. Name the adult, time, frequency, fee, class or activity displaced, progress measure, and backup during absence. If the school cannot do that, the family has a warm description—not yet a support plan.
Compare the obligation, not the discount
Current prices are useful baselines—not Fall 2027 contracts
| School | Published 2026–27 baseline | Important context |
|---|---|---|
| BB&N | $49,000–$69,800 by division | Books and lunch included; campuses and care vary by age |
| Roxbury Latin | $44,000 | Need-blind admission; books, some supplies, and transport remain |
| Boston Latin | $0 public tuition | Boston eligibility, transit, activities, and family time still matter |
| Nobles | $68,500 day · $74,800 five-day | About $1,000 in estimated extras; weekend travel belongs in the bill |
| Winsor | $68,550 | Ask for current transport, activities, and complete aid coverage |
| Milton | $50,500–$68,500 K–8 · $69,900 day · $79,900 boarding | Division and residential status change the bill |
| Belmont Hill | $71,800 day · $81,500 five-day | Current sources conflict on the aid share; weekend travel remains |
| Commonwealth | $62,780 tuition and fees | First-year technology and transit can raise the known baseline |
| Dana Hall | $65,765 day · $79,925 boarding | Deposits, riding, buses, insurance, and travel can be material |
| Thayer | $65,800 middle · $68,900 upper | Transport, books, and educational travel are excluded |
| BU Academy | $63,528 tuition and fees | Books, lunch, transit, and incidentals are extra |
Fall 2027 entrants will generally pay 2027–28 rates that are not yet public. Ask for tuition, deposit, refund obligation, fees, bus, meals, books, device, trips, arts, athletics, insurance, boarding travel, and expected giving in one written scenario. Then model renewal through graduation.
Financial aid changes the price, not the operating model. Compare the family contribution and uncovered costs—not the grant percentage or average award. Ask what happens if income stays flat while tuition rises, whether both households must file, and which non-tuition costs scale with the grant.
Put every written offer through the same ledger in our Boston financial-aid and decisions guide. A percentage grant is not comparable until the family contribution, uncovered costs, renewal assumptions, and contract are visible.
Our read
The Boston shortlist should become clearer after the family-week test
Boston tempts families to compare famous names across an enormous practical radius. We would rather see four schools whose entry door, timetable, route, and support fit than ten schools joined by a map that ignores dismissal. Time and sleep are educational resources.
We would also refuse the local shorthand. A boys’ or girls’ school is not automatically confident or traditional. A boarding school is not necessarily a seven-day home. A tiny school is not automatically warm. A large public school is not automatically impersonal. A university affiliation does not grant unrestricted course access. Each claim needs a mechanism and a child attached.
The strongest choice is usually the school whose real obligations the student wants—and whose commute, residential rhythm, support, and full bill the family can sustain without making every week an emergency.
