Boston residency, the November deadline, and academic benchmarks

A student must reside in Boston or otherwise receive BPS services. The live Fall 2027 rule requires both the applicant and a parent or guardian to reside in Boston.

The student must earn at least a B average, follow a grade-level Massachusetts-standards curriculum, rank a school, and complete Reading and Math MAP.

Students using a modified curriculum, MCAS-Alt, or the SLIFE designation are ineligible. This is an admissions boundary, separate from public-school special-education rights after enrollment.

Private, parochial, Commonwealth charter, METCO, out-of-city, and homeschooled families must verify Boston residency by December 4, 2026, at 5 p.m. BPS says no exceptions apply. Verification remains necessary when a sibling attends BPS, a student receives BPS special-education services, a parent works for Boston, or the child previously attended BPS.

Enrolled BPS families do not repeat verification, but they must report address changes. All applicants should confirm that BPS has the correct home address before tier assignment.

The tour informs your choice; it does not evaluate your child

Boston Latin requires no interview, essay, teacher recommendation, child visit, portfolio, or school-run test. The BPS formula controls who gets an invitation.

BLS expects to publish 2026–27 open-house information after October 1. Tours generally run on selected evenings, afternoons, and Saturdays from mid-October through late February.

Use the visit to watch corridor transitions, ask students what a full class day feels like, and test the commute at real arrival and dismissal times.

Classical requirements inside a modern range

The curriculum rests on a classical core: Grade 7 entrants complete four years of Latin; Grade 9 entrants complete three. Both follow substantial English, mathematics, science, history, modern-language, arts, physical-education, and health requirements, and graduation includes 100 service hours.

Declamation makes public recitation an ordinary practice in English and Latin, so families should ask how anxiety, speech differences, and disability accommodations work.

BLS lists 29 Advanced Placement courses, though the handbook caps students at eight across high school. A senior wishing to take four AP courses must secure approval from both counselor and head, and every enrolled student must take the exam to retain course credit.

The homework baseline, testing waves, and promotion rules

Evenings require steady study. The handbook estimates 30 minutes of homework per subject each day, including projects and review, while Advanced Placement classes may add 15 minutes per subject.

A weekend or holiday generally counts as one homework night.

Workload peaks arrive on schedule: departments hold term tests during the final six days of each term, while final examinations occupy three-day windows.

School breaks are officially homework-free, except for April AP assignments and weather make-up work for seniors.

Promotion requires passing at least five major subjects, or four for Class VI. Depending on the pattern of failing marks, outcomes can include summer recovery, repeating the grade, or transferring out of the school.

Structured peer help and accommodation limits

Students receive an alphabetically assigned counselor in Grade 7, then a new counselor in Grade 10 who stays with them through graduation and college planning. The clinical team offers short-term individual support, groups, crisis response, and outside referrals, not continuing psychotherapy.

ALPHA supports reentry after extended illness or hospitalization.

Academic help has clear limits. The McCarthy Institute offers after-school peer help in math and Latin, explicitly framed as clarification rather than remediation or reteaching.

Virtual math help runs through Saturday Success across 20 Saturdays, requiring steady attendance.

BPS provides special-education evaluation and Section 504 processes. The BLS profile describes an elevator, appropriate programming, and a program for students with specific learning disabilities.

The numbers deserve a direct question on the tour: students with disabilities were 3.3% of BLS enrollment in 2024–25, compared with 23.1% districtwide, and English learners were 0.6%, compared with 34.7% districtwide. Those gaps do not reveal service quality, but they make identification, accommodation, and belonging essential things to ask about.

The MBTA commute, a 4 p.m. close, and how concerns get reported

The bell rings from 7:45 a.m. to 2:15 p.m. at 78 Avenue Louis Pasteur. The Green Line’s E branch and several bus routes serve the Longwood area, and most Grade 7–12 students ride the MBTA rather than a yellow bus.

Specialized IEP or Section 504 transportation remains a separate eligibility determination.

Eligible students in Grades 7–12 receive a free M7 pass. It works around the clock, even through summer, on subways, local and express buses, and commuter rail Zones 1A, 1, and 2.

The building opens at 6 a.m., with early arrivals waiting in the dining hall until 7:25 a.m. Doors close at 4 p.m. unless an adult is running a school activity.

There is no conventional aftercare. Families who need coverage past 4 p.m. should map daily activities, cancellation days, late rides, weather disruptions, and a backup adult.

BPS requires visitors to use video entry, show photo identification, sign in, and wear a pass, and secondary schools have district security professionals. Every school maintains an emergency plan and conducts drills.

BPS describes Safe Mode, emergency communication, reunification, mandated child-abuse reporting, and safety-transfer procedures.

BPS operates a 24-hour bullying call and text line. The Office of Equity receives bias, discrimination, harassment, and Title IX concerns.

Tuition-free does not mean cost-free: a worked family budget

Incidental expenses still require a budget. Daily meals, basic transit, and tuition cost nothing, but renting an instrument is $50 a year with the book.

Advanced Placement exams cost $100 each at full price—subsidized or waived depending on family income and BPS rules—with students capped at eight AP courses. Private music lessons, sports gear, school trips, club activities, dances, yearbooks, college exams, and transit beyond M7 boundaries can add further costs.

Grade 7 is structural; Grade 9 is capacity-sensitive

Boston Latin accepts only Grade 7 and Grade 9 entrants. Fall 2027 applicants are current Grade 6 and Grade 8 students, respectively.

BLS issued 456 Grade 7 invitations for 2026–27. It issued 88 Grade 9 invitations, compared with 72 one year earlier.

Grade 9 BLS invitations ranged from 41 to 93 across six listed cycles. BPS says Grade 9 volume changes with expected Grade 8-to-9 continuation.

Testing weekends, ranking routes, and the residency deadline

Weekend MAP registration runs October 13 through December 4, 2026. Non-BPS students in Grades 5, 7, and 8 use weekend MAP.

Current exam-school students seeking another exam school also use that route. BPS non-exam-school students in Grades 5 and 7 test at school between May 26 and June 5, 2026.

They do not register for that administration.

The published calendar has a discrepancy: it calls January 9–10, 2027 a Saturday session, although those dates span Saturday and Sunday. Weather dates are January 16–17.

The published ranking window is January 5–February 5, 2027. Ranking depends on the applicant’s current-school route.

Current BPS students in Grades 5 and 7 use the January process. Current BPS Grade 8 students and exam-school transfer applicants rank through a Welcome Center with parent photo identification.

Non-BPS families rank during fall residency verification and may update choices through January. Grade processing follows the January 29 quarter close, and BPS expects decisions in late April.

A 70/30 composite, two years of grades, and bonus points

Invitations rest on a formula: 70% GPA and 30% MAP percentiles. BPS uses an unweighted 11-point A-to-F scale; an A-plus receives no advantage over an A.

Earlier school-based bonus points were removed. Advanced coursework receives no GPA premium.

GPA pulls from two academic years. Grade 7 GPA uses final Grade 5 English and mathematics, plus Grade 6 English, mathematics, science, and social studies from two quarters or the first trimester or semester.

Grade 9 follows the same pattern with final Grade 7 English and mathematics, plus the named Grade 8 subjects from the applicable early-year reporting periods. Non-BPS schools must convert marks to BPS letter grades.

The testing portion uses MAP Reading and Math percentiles. Students receive two MAP opportunities, and BPS uses the higher subject score, even when Reading and Math come from different sittings.

Prior-cycle method — BPS divided GPA by 11 and multiplied by 70. Each MAP percentile was divided by 99 and multiplied by 15.

Ten bonus points go to applicants in three specific circumstances: experiencing homelessness, being in DCF custody or care, or living in eligible Boston Housing Authority public housing. That bonus applies only within the tier allocation.

Citywide seats, four socioeconomic tiers, and one invitation

Each exam school awards its first 20% of invitations to the highest composite scores citywide. At this stage, BPS considers only an applicant's first-choice school.

The other 80% is distributed evenly across four socioeconomic tiers. Tiers use census-based poverty, homeownership, single-parent, home-language, and educational-attainment measures.

Each tier contains roughly one-quarter of Boston’s school-aged population in the relevant grades. BPS runs ten rounds, beginning with the lowest socioeconomic-score tier in every round.

The Fall 2027 map will appear in late winter 2026–27. Do not use the 2026–27 map to infer a new address tier.

Ties are randomized. An independent third party reviews the process, and invitations are final without an appeal route.

Applicants must rank at least one exam school. BPS encourages ranking all three plus other BPS schools, but families should order exam schools by genuine preference.

BPS issues at most one exam-school invitation and automatically assigns it. A family cannot compare multiple invitations after decisions arrive.

There is no sibling preference. Students without an invitation retain their current BPS seat when that school offers the next grade.

Waitlists contain at most 100 students per school and entry grade. They continue the algorithm, usually move after September, expire November 30, and do not roll forward.

Our read

Apply for the public opportunity, then test the daily life

Boston Latin offers extraordinary public value, authentic academic range, and a formula families can inspect line by line. Grade 7 is the durable opening; Grade 9 depends on how many desks open up.

The admissions side is predictable: residency by December 4, MAP in the winter, a ranking by February 5, and a composite you cannot game. The daily side is where the real decision lives, so put your energy into testing the commute, the homework load, and the support boundaries before the invitation arrives.

Homework, Latin help and the MBTA ride at Boston Latin

Boston Latin's workload and commute are part of the offer, so ask students and staff how the nights and the trip actually go.

Workload, help and the commute

  1. How many hours of homework do you actually do each night, and how does that change near term tests or AP exams?
  2. If a child struggles in Latin or math, who steps in first, and is McCarthy Institute peer help enough?
  3. What does the MBTA commute look like during morning arrival and after 4 p.m. activities?
  4. How are students with disabilities and English learners identified and supported here, given how few are enrolled?
