- 304 on admissions FAQ
Approximately 300 students on one West Roxbury campus.
Current school estimate. This creates most of the new class.
A real expansion, not merely attrition replacement.
Decision March 10; enrollment contract April 10.
Fall 2027 tuition, bus price, books, and supplies remain unknown.
Live pages conflict between 37% and 38% receiving aid.
Commuter rail, MBTA buses, school buses, driving, and long activity days.
A prior profile says 308; the live facts page says approximately 300.
How to use the visit
Watch how the institution handles difference, not just achievement
The tour occurs during an academic day, which is useful. Ask to see a Grade 7 class, a free period, lunch, an arts space, and a lower-team practice.
The quality of transitions matters as much as polished facilities.
Two open houses are scheduled for October 3 and November 15, 2026. The events page places the November start at 11:45 a.m.; the deadlines page appears to misprint 11:45 p.m. Register through inquiry and Ravenna.
Listen for whether boys disagree naturally, ask for help without embarrassment, and celebrate artistic work as visibly as athletic success. Those observations test the school’s stated generalist culture more effectively than a trophy inventory.
Boys-school model
Single-gender education is a conviction here, not a demographic accident
Roxbury Latin explicitly argues that a boys’ school can broaden, rather than narrow, masculinity. Its public language emphasizes compassion, creative work, nurturing support, resilience, service, and collaborative participation beyond school.
That argument deserves testing in ordinary life. Ask who gets social status, how adults interrupt gender policing, how queer students experience the community, and whether boys can be quiet, theatrical, nonathletic, uncertain, or emotionally expressive without penalty.
The school regularly describes its community as a band of brothers. This may feel deeply anchoring to some students.
Others may experience the language as prescriptive, especially if they want daily coeducational friendships or do not identify with conventional brotherhood.
Public admissions pages consistently seek boys but do not explain eligibility for transgender or nonbinary applicants. Current culture materials mention LGBTQ inclusion and safe spaces, but they do not publish student demographics, policies, or lived-experience measures.
Moral and spiritual formation
Not a neutral secular container, and not presented as one denomination
Character formation is central. The school repeatedly names honesty, simplicity, respect, concern for others, public service, and meaningful purpose.
Adults use advising, athletics, discipline, service, and Hall to reinforce these expectations.
Spiritual practice is visible. The school says boys rise for prayers in Hall, and formal gatherings commemorate religious and national occasions.
Current pages do not identify Roxbury Latin as denominational or require a family’s statement of faith.
Parents should ask what prayer sounds like, who leads it, and how Jewish, Muslim, Hindu, atheist, agnostic, and other students participate. A broad spiritual vocabulary can still feel compulsory if opting out carries social friction.
Academics
Classical foundations, rapid pacing, and increasing choice
Younger students build foundations across English, Boston history, classical and modern languages, computer science, mathematics, science, and arts. Choice expands later, including honors or accelerated courses, tutorials, RL@Work workplace visits, and off-campus independent work.
The language requirement is substantial. The prior profile requires Latin plus French or Spanish through third-year levels, with Ancient Greek as one alternative.
New Grade 9 students may need accelerated placement to meet requirements.
Grade 9 includes Math-Science Investigations and Western Civilization. Students later complete two core laboratory sciences, United States history, ongoing English, arts electives, and physical activity.
Seniors complete a four-week independent project with written and oral reflections.
Roxbury Latin ended AP courses after 2023–24. It argues that faculty-designed honors and accelerated courses offer greater range and depth while restoring May teaching time.
Families should examine actual syllabi and student work, not compare labels alone.
The curriculum has real constraints. The prior profile warns that doubling in languages can make three laboratory sciences difficult to schedule.
Grades 11 and 12 generally cap students at five major courses per semester, aside from senior arts.
Assessment and workload
Rigor is explicit; the daily dosage is not
The latest prior-cycle record shows that the school uses a nine-point high-school scale, with nine representing A+. It adds one quality point to honors, advanced, and specified accelerated courses, calculates major-course GPA, and does not publish class rank.
The school describes every course as rapidly paced and rigorous. It also says A- and B-level work prepares students well.
That is more candid than prestige language, but it does not tell a family how many nightly hours are expected.
Current public materials do not publish Grade 7–8 grading practices, exam calendars, retake rules, late-work policies, average homework, weekend load, major-assessment clustering, or sleep data. These are material fit questions, not minor details.
Attributed context — Niche shows 52 reviews and a 4.5 rating. Visible 2024 student and parent reviews praise faculty and achievement while acknowledging rigor.
These self-selected accounts cannot establish workload prevalence or represent current cohorts.
Advising and support
The relational safety net looks strong; service boundaries need detail
Every student has a faculty or staff advisor. The school says individual meetings typically occur weekly.
Advisors meet parents in fall, write a comprehensive spring letter, and serve as the usual first contact for academic, social, and personal concerns.
Academic help includes faculty access, peer tutoring during free periods, and regular meetings with a learning specialist. Public pages do not specify staffing ratios, referral criteria, session limits, progress measures, or whether support occurs during class, lunch, or activities.
Health programming begins with Grade 7 wellness and Grade 8 personal development. Older grades receive programming on consent, masculinity, identity, mental health, addiction, and sleep.
The school lists a Director of Counseling and a Children’s Hospital partnership.
The current health page does not define the boundary between short-term school counseling, specialist consultation, and outside ongoing care. Families should ask who can see a student, how quickly, for how long, and when the school expects an outside clinician to take over.
Public pages omit accommodation procedures, documentation rules, psychoeducational evaluation expectations, medication protocols, crisis coverage, counseling confidentiality, and outside-provider coordination. The school also states it provides no ESL or ELL courses.
Culture and belonging
A deliberately close community with high expectations for participation
The generalist ideal is operational, not decorative. Students are expected to contribute across classrooms, teams, arts, publications, debate, service, and other activities.
In a 300-student school, supporting roles matter because programs depend on participation.
The live admissions FAQ reports 304 students. The current facts page says approximately 300, while the prior profile reported 308, 39% students of color, 35% from Boston, and commuters from more than 40 towns.
Current culture pages describe identity-specific conversations, inclusive curriculum review, equal access to programs, and deliberate recruitment of women, people of color, and LGBTQ faculty. They do not publish retention, climate-survey, discipline, or belonging results by identity.
Tradition is powerful here: Hall, the all-school handshake, Exelauno Day, Beaver Brook, senior talks, and prayers connect cohorts. Ask how students can question a tradition, and which practices have changed after student feedback.
Arts, activities, and athletics
Breadth is real, but the calendar asks families to absorb it
Arts include curricular and extracurricular music, drama, and visual art. The school reports three drama productions, with students from neighboring girls’ schools joining some casts.
Facilities include a 300-seat theater, studios, and dedicated music rooms.
The current facts page lists ten sports and 32 teams. Athletics or independent physical education is required throughout enrollment.
The program favors multi-sport generalists and says lower teams matter as much as varsity teams.
The schedule is the tradeoff. The live calendar shows practices, games, auditions, and rehearsals extending well beyond the academic day.
Ask how a Grade 7 commuter combines homework, sleep, transportation, and more than one serious interest.
Commute and daily logistics
The campus is generous; the family transportation plan must be exact
Roxbury Latin occupies 117 acres at 101 St. Theresa Avenue in West Roxbury.
The campus includes academic, arts, dining, and extensive athletic facilities. This is one campus, not a multi-site shuttle system.
The Needham Line’s West Roxbury station is near Centre Street and St. Theresa Avenue.
MBTA buses connect from Forest Hills. School bus service covers selected Boston neighborhoods, South Station, and two South Shore corridors.
The school calls its bus charge nominal but does not publish the amount, stops, times, capacity, late-bus service, or annual guarantees. A route that works at dismissal may fail after practice, rehearsal, tutoring, or an away game.
Students and faculty eat lunch in two sittings. Current dining pages describe hot food, soup, sandwiches, salad, and allergy accommodation.
The tuition page says there are no charges beyond books and some athletic supplies, suggesting lunch is included.
The standard 2026–27 start and dismissal times, supervised early arrival, general aftercare, late buses, pickup rules, and emergency-closure transportation are not consolidated publicly. Build the commute around the actual activity your son expects to pursue.
Tuition, full cost, and aid
A strong affordability model still needs a household budget
2026–27 tuition is $44,000. The school says there are no other charges except books and a few personal athletic supplies.
It offers one-payment, two-payment, and ten-payment schedules through Clarity.
Admission is need-blind, aid is need-based, and the school says it meets full demonstrated need. Awards range from $1,000 to full tuition.
Families may seek added help for travel and other programs.
The 2026–27 aid table covers 115 families. Average contributions range from $1,181 below $75,001 income to $22,563 above $350,000.
These are group averages, not promises; assets, liabilities, family size, and other tuition obligations matter.
The reported share of students receiving aid varies slightly by source: the live tuition page says 38%, the live FAQ says 37%, and the prior profile said 39%. The difference may reflect timing, but families should request one current denominator and aid budget.
2027–28 tuition, deposit, books, athletic equipment, bus price, payment-plan fees, optional travel, test preparation, psychological services, and voluntary giving are unpublished. The bus charge also complicates the claim of no other charges.
Fall 2027 aid applications open through Clarity on September 1, 2026, and are due January 15, 2027. Returning families face December 15.
Public pages do not state when applicant awards arrive.
Entry points
Grade 7 is the main build; Grade 9 is a smaller expansion
Roxbury Latin usually admits 42–45 boys into Grade 7, called Class VI. This is the school’s primary intake, not a handful of replacement seats.
Families seeking a first secondary-school transition have the clearest structural opportunity.
Grade 9, called Class IV, adds 12–14 boys. This is a genuine expansion but a much smaller one.
A prior official profile instead described 10–12 additions, showing that the number moves by cycle.
Grade 8 and Grade 10 applicants may occasionally enter, but the school says this is not normal and their likelihood is lower. These should be treated as attrition-dependent openings, not planned class expansions.
The school’s admissions pages leave Grade 11 unclear. The FAQ names occasional Grade 8 and Grade 10 entry, while the selection page also specifies SSAT testing for Grade 11 applicants.
Neither page publishes Grade 11 seats, and Grade 12 is not presented as an entry.
Prior-cycle context — the 2025–26 profile said the overall admit rate had hovered near 17%, with yield near 90%. It also said Grade 9 was more selective than Grade 7.
These are school-reported historical figures, not Fall 2027 odds.
Fall 2027 admissions
A personal process with three different testing layers
Begin with the school’s inquiry form. Roxbury Latin then sends its packet and Ravenna access instructions.
Parent and applicant questionnaires, transcripts, and teacher recommendations are due January 15, 2027. There is no application fee.
Grade 7 and Grade 8 applicants take the ISEE. Grade 9 and older applicants take the SSAT.
Both must be completed by January 5. Every applicant also completes a short, school-designed aptitude exercise during the visit.
The required campus visit lasts approximately 90–120 minutes. A student conducts a 20–30 minute academic-day tour.
An admission committee member interviews the applicant and parents separately after the tour.
The committee reviews school performance, challenge taken, a graded essay, counselor and teacher recommendations, testing, activities, character, questionnaires, and interviews. The school says test scores inform preparation but do not determine decisions alone.
Decisions post in Ravenna at 3 p.m. Eastern on March 10, 2027. Contracts are due April 10.
Late applications may be reviewed, but the school explicitly says admission becomes less likely.
Public pages do not name recommendation subjects, questionnaire prompts, interview duration, aptitude-test format, score ranges, retesting rules, or accommodations. Ask before scheduling tests or choosing recommenders.
A rare proposition, provided the daily life matches the promise
Roxbury Latin is unusually legible. It wants talented boys who value hard work, humility, broad engagement, and service.
It offers a large Grade 7 intake, a smaller Grade 9 expansion, low relative tuition, and need-blind aid backed by substantial assets.
The strongest reason to consider it is not a college list. It is the potential coherence of rigorous classes, serious advising, arts, athletics, spiritual reflection, and participation inside a very small community.
