An all-boarding, all-boys community on 1,200 acres

Every student at Woodberry Forest boards. With 400 boys in grades 9 through 12 across a 1,200-acre campus in rural Virginia, the entire student body eats, sleeps, studies, and spends weekends together.

The faculty live there too: the school says 95% of teachers reside on campus, many in apartments attached to dormitories. The federal count for 2023–24 was 393 students and 57 full-time-equivalent teachers, a 6.9 student-teacher ratio.

Woodberry presents an all-boys setting as a place for independence, confidence, mentorship, and reduced distraction. Boys study, eat, compete, worship, and resolve conflict entirely within a male residential community.

Mixers, dances, and trips with girls’ schools provide occasional social contact, but not daily coeducation.

Woodberry’s mission explicitly rests on Christian principles, with a nondenominational Monday chapel. Belonging groups include the Minority Caucus, Gender and Sexuality Alliance, international student groups, and the 1968 Center.

Woodberry's own reporting notes its first Black student attended a 1969 summer program and graduated in 1974, with alumni later describing isolation. The UVA Religion, Race and Democracy Lab preserves an independent oral-history project about Woodberry's integration.

In 2020, a petition alleged racism and demanded changes.

Saturday classes, seated meals, and dorm check-ins

The school week runs Monday through Saturday. Classes meet four times weekly: 45 minutes on Monday and 55 minutes for three other periods, ending at 3:30 Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday, and 1:00 Tuesday and Friday.

Saturday morning brings three instructional periods finishing by 11:30.

Shared meals anchor daily life: three daily meals, with three seated meals each week (two dinners and one lunch). Advisors sit with advisee groups during a weekly seated dinner.

Dorm leaders and resident faculty supervise the dormitories, and many of those adults live in attached apartments. The school describes dorm meetings, regular check-ins, supervised study, and faculty physically present during duty.

Selected older students serve as prefects, and peer leaders mentor small groups of new boys. Dorm and floor headcounts and overnight adult ratios are not published, so ask.

Public technology pages describe campus connectivity and digital honor. The Good Schools Guide review from April 2026 reports a November 2025 school-provided policy: third and fourth formers centrally store phones overnight, while older boys have more leeway.

Campus weekends, leave rules, and the cost of getting home

Saturday classes end at 11:30, leaving a compressed weekend. Woodberry sponsors 30+ clubs, running trips to Washington, UVA, malls, movies, skiing, hiking, amusement parks, paintball, and dances with girls’ schools.

Fine arts include drama, speech, music ensembles, studio art, and AP Art.

Under the 2025–26 manual, leave required REACH requests with parent or host approval and school sign-offs. Full weekends began after Friday obligations; shorter leave began after Saturday obligations.

School transport had to be booked earlier.

Break shuttles served Charlottesville, Culpeper, Richmond, Washington airports (Dulles and Reagan National), Baltimore, and rail stations, priced at $40 to $75. Non-break rides cost $185 to Dulles and $210 to Reagan National; shared trips could lower the fare.

Private drivers were not screened by the school. Ride-share was allowed for returns with a backup plan, but not for departures.

Unaccompanied minors needed notice before booking. Campus stayed open for some shorter breaks, while major closures required departure.

Physics first, seven consultation periods, and support limits

Woodberry inverts the standard science sequence: third formers take physics, fourth formers take chemistry, and fifth formers take biology. English requires at least one writing conference each marking period.

The schedule provides seven 30-minute consultation periods for daytime faculty help. Woodberry publishes its timetable and frequent mathematics assessment.

Each boy has a faculty advisor, and prior materials describe advisee groups meeting weekly over dinner. The Smoot Center offers organization, study skills, accommodations, drop-in help, and longer-term assistance; its directory lists two academic-development professionals.

Formal one-to-one college counseling begins in fifth form; earlier grades have programming only. Counseling pages disagree: the department page names Director Julia Hixson, two assistant directors, and a counseling assistant, while the school leadership page still names Stephen Jackson as director.

Athletic culture, outdoor education, and safety protocols

Athletics sit at the center of school culture. Two athletic trainers cover weekdays from 9:30 through practices or games, plus competitions on weekends.

A 2024 school article described a 13-helmet football sensor pilot and reported no diagnosed football concussions that season.

The 1,200-acre campus supports climbing, hiking, paddling, fishing, skeet, and a ropes-course day for third and fourth formers. Woodberry allows personal rods and guns to be stored securely for supervised use.

Around-the-clock nursing and counseling scope

The Health Center operates 24 hours daily with licensed nurses, medical oversight from Orange Family Physicians, and regional referrals.

Mental health services are directed by a licensed clinical psychologist, covering homesickness, relationships, depression, anxiety, grief, and academic difficulty. Endure Mentality offers workshops, consultation, and groups for student-athletes.

The honor code and prefect dismissal authority

Woodberry’s honor code prohibits lying, cheating, and stealing. Prefects help administer the system, and a prior viewbook notes they may recommend dismissal to the headmaster after a guilty finding, placing heavy disciplinary authority on students.

Niche displayed a 4.7 rating from 67 reviews during reporting; its polls on safety, happiness, and teacher care drew 15 responses. The Good Schools Guide lists Cognia and the Virginia Association of Independent Schools as accreditors; confirm that through Virginia's Council for Private Education verifier or ask the school for its certificate.

Budgeting tuition, extras, financial aid, and visa support

Tuition for 2025–26 was $72,300, covering room, board, and activities. Books and travel vary by origin and may be counted in need-based aid.

Break shuttles ran $40 to $75 each way; weekend rides cost $185 to Dulles and $210 to Reagan National.

A 2025 viewbook listed accident insurance, international health insurance ($3,040), tuition-refund coverage, payment-plan fees, a postal box, and influenza vaccination. Some extra charges were conditional.

Aid is entirely need-based, meeting 100% of calculated need for admitted aided students through annual Clarity applications. The tuition page reports 42% of students receiving assistance, grants from $6,700 through full tuition, and $7.65 million awarded annually.

Published figures conflict: the Amici Fund lists 44%; a prior viewbook listed $8.15 million and an average grant of $49,108.

Woodberry is authorized to enroll nonimmigrant students. Its International Student Office handles I-20s, orientation, advocacy, and record transfer, and the school reports students from more than 20 countries.

Families must also plan for international health insurance ($3,040 in prior fee schedules) and break travel.

Applying for Fall 2027: Grades 9–11, visits, testing, and dates

Woodberry’s application portal currently offers Fall 2027 entry in Grades 9, 10, and 11. Grade 12 and postgraduate entry are not offered there.

Grade 9 is primary.

Fall 2027 applications opened August 15, 2026. Families may submit only one of Woodberry’s form or the Standard Application Online (SAO).

The admissions page still shows the prior cycle's November 15 and January 15 deadlines and its December and March notification dates. Those dates cannot govern Fall 2027 entry.

A separate December Decision page describes a nonbinding first-choice round; a later contract requires withdrawing other applications.

Every applicant must interview (in person or virtually). Eighth graders and older may request an overnight visit with a dorm stay, meals, classes, tour, and interview.

Virtual Fall 2026 sessions cover residential life, student experience, academics, and general questions for remote families.

Testing is optional (ISEE, SSAT, PSAT, SAT, PreACT, ACT; TOEFL, Duolingo, or IELTS for non-native English speakers). No-test applicants submit a graded writing sample and a mathematics assessment or syllabus.

The 2025 viewbook asked for English and mathematics teacher recommendations, a principal recommendation, and two prior transcripts.

Our read

A coherent school, because every boy lives there.

Woodberry’s clearest offer is its structure. Every boy boards.

Nearly every teacher lives on campus. Classes, meals, athletics, advising, honor, and weekends share one school rhythm.

That model can produce uncommon continuity and belonging. It also raises the stakes when something slips, because students cannot retreat into a separate home culture after classes.

Woodberry's deadlines, Saturday classes and dorm routines

Woodberry is all-boys and all-boarding, so confirm the deadlines and costs, then ask how weekends and younger boys' dorm routines run.

Deadlines, weekends and support

  1. What are the confirmed application, December Decision, and financial aid deadlines for Fall 2027 entry?
  2. What is the total all-in cost for the entry year, including books, break shuttles, and required fees?
  3. With Saturday morning classes ending at 11:30, how many boys typically remain on campus over the weekend versus taking leave?
  4. For third and fourth formers, what are the current dorm routines for evening study hall and overnight phone storage?
  5. If a boy needs academic coaching or accommodations, how do subject teachers coordinate day-to-day with the Smoot Center?
