Fall 2027 application
Interview required · January 15 deadline

Grades 9–10 are test-optional for admission. Grades 11, 12, and PG have required published testing routes.

Current boarding benchmark
$81,600 for 2026–27

Fall 2027 tuition is unknown. Senior, living-abroad, travel, insurance, care, tutoring, and optional-program costs require a separate family budget.

The PG route is established, small, and individually built

Mercersburg says it enrolls about 10 to 15 postgraduate students yearly. PGs build individual course plans and begin working with college counseling immediately.↗

PGs live in mixed-grade dorms and will likely room with another PG or a rising senior. The school does not advertise a separate PG residence or fixed PG curriculum.↗

Athletes need a specific eligibility check. Mercersburg says a PG who turns 19 before September 1 cannot compete in Mid-Atlantic Prep League contests.↗

We do not know how many PGs are nonathletes, finish the year, improve college options, receive aid, or earn leadership roles. Families should ask for recent PG-specific results and total cohort sizes.↗

The interview is separate for student and parent

A typical campus visit lasts about two and a half hours. It includes a campus tour and separate conversations for the student and parent, each lasting about 30 minutes.↗

Mercersburg describes the interview as a conversation with an admission counselor. Applicants who are Chinese citizens must instead complete the interview requirement through Vericant.↗

Public pages do not disclose the evaluation rubric, whether virtual interviews affect review, or which parent topics enter the file. Prepare specific examples rather than rehearsed claims.↗

Students should be ready to discuss classroom habits, community choices, help-seeking, and how they use unstructured time. Parents should ask direct questions about support, rules, travel, cost, and communication.↗↗

A weekday academic schedule with different expectations by stage

Current classes run Monday through Friday, roughly 8:50 a.m. to 3:20 p.m. Mercersburg does not hold Saturday classes, a meaningful distinction in the boarding-school week.↗

Grades 9 and 10 emphasize foundations. The school says homework is limited, but it publishes no nightly cap, assignment calendar, or median workload.↗

A 2024 school wellness feature said a schedule change reduced most days to no more than four classes and shifted evening preparation from five or six subjects to three or four. That is helpful workload context, not a quantified homework promise for 2027.

Ask students how often major papers, tests, rehearsals, and away games still bunch together.↗

Grades 11 and 12 move toward independent, project-based, and experiential work. Minimum annual loads are 17 academic credits for Grades 9–10 and 15 for Grades 11–12.↗

The 2025–26 profile describes five to six credits per term in Grades 9–10 and five in Grades 11–12. A grade of record is issued each trimester.↗

Mercersburg reports an average class of 12 and a four-to-one student-teacher ratio. Those averages do not show section ranges, course access, or advising availability.↗↗

The live catalog shows substantial choice across humanities, languages, mathematics, sciences, arts, technology, and interdisciplinary work. Mercersburg's home page says 150 courses while the curriculum page says 145; the school does not explain whether that is timing, rounding, or a counting difference.

Either way, an inventory does not guarantee that every course runs, fits the timetable, or is open to every student.↗↗↗

Advanced Studies is the highest published course level

Advanced Studies is Mercersburg’s highest rigor designation. The school usually limits students to four Advanced Studies credits per term.↗

Earned Honors is awarded after the year when published criteria are met. It is not a separately enrolled course level, and Mercersburg introduced the designation in 2022–23.↗

Mercersburg does not calculate GPA or class rank. It cites multiple entry points and deliberate class growth, while reporting all course grades to colleges.↗

The Intensive program ran from 2021 through 2024 and was paused in 2024–25. Families should not treat older descriptions of that track as a current offering.↗

The profile says Mercersburg does not itself report discipline to colleges. Students are counseled and expected to disclose specified serious consequences when an application asks.↗

Every senior chooses a capstone route, but the architecture is evolving

Mercersburg says every 12th grader completes Springboard, the Mercersburg Academy Polarization Initiative, or Research Science. Each route asks for a different form of sustained work.↗

MAPS begins in Grade 11 and culminates in a senior paper and public presentation. The current page describes a 30-page paper and a 25-to-30-minute presentation.↗

Research Science is also a two-year route. Students defend a 15-page proposal, conduct original work, and finish with an eight-to-ten-minute presentation.↗

Springboard options include arts, entrepreneurship, maker work, psychology, and responsible artificial intelligence. Specific offerings can change and should be confirmed for the student’s senior year.↗

The 2025–26 profile describes MAPS as selective for 12 to 15 students and describes the paper length differently. Meanwhile, some school pages still leave Research Science off the capstone list.↗↗

The safest reading is a program transition. Ask which routes will exist for Fall 2027 entrants, when selection occurs, what prerequisites apply, and whether staffing limits participation.↗↗

Mercersburg announced Global Studies and Research Science concentrations in January 2026 for Grades 9 and 10. Participation, completion, staffing, and college-outcome evidence do not yet exist publicly.↗

Useful support exists, but its intensity and cost need definition

The Academic Support Office offers individual help with studying, testing, time management, and organization. Evening centers provide faculty and student tutoring in mathematics, science, writing, and foreign languages.↗↗

The office reviews educational testing, IEPs, and 504 plans and develops a Mercersburg plan. Published accommodations include extended time, preferential seating, audiobooks, breaks, written directions, and captions.↗

Mercersburg can arrange adult-instructor tutoring and refer families for outside testing. The page does not state fees, frequency, eligibility standards, documentation age, or typical turnaround.↗

The school also submits standardized-test accommodation requests. Approval remains with the testing organization, so families should ask who manages deadlines and what happens after a denial.↗

An earlier school magazine piece noted that support demand rose after the pandemic and students often need to self-advocate. It described evening centers running Monday through Thursday for about two and a half hours.↗

No dedicated ESL program appears in the public academic-support materials. International families should distinguish foreign-language help from English-language instruction and confirm whether writing support is sufficient.↗↗

Seven dorms, mixed grades, and visible adults

Mercersburg identifies seven dormitories. Main, Keil, and Tippetts house boys; Culbertson, Fowle, South Cottage, and Swank house girls.↗

Dorm faculty and student prefects live on every floor. Prefects assist the dorm dean and faculty, but students remain peers rather than substitutes for adult safeguarding.↗

Faculty families live in every dorm. New students receive room assignments with preferences considered; returning students choose roommates and use a lottery for housing.↗

Boarders typically have roommates. Rooms include furniture, air conditioning, wireless internet, and ethernet, but the school publishes no room-size range or single-room policy.↗

Each adviser supports no more than eight students, and the school says one adult watches primarily for each student. Families should still ask how evenings, absences, and handoffs are documented.↗

All day students are affiliated with a dorm and receive a locker. A day-to-boarding change is case-by-case and depends on family circumstances, dorm space, and financial aid.↗

The school's published boarding numbers vary slightly across pages. The home page lists 83% boarding while campus-life pages cite about 85%, a difference likely due to reporting dates or rounding.↗↗

Weekend options are visible, but the daily rules are not

Mercersburg describes movies, dances, performances, shopping, skiing, biking, and hiking. A prior school article said the activities director planned 150 to 170 events yearly, but that is not a current guarantee.↗↗

Boarders receive 10 regular off-campus weekends yearly, and seniors receive 12. Leave requires Student Life forms; the public FAQ does not give approval timing or host rules.↗

One long weekend per term remains open on campus. The school closes for Thanksgiving, winter, and spring vacations, so families must arrange off-campus care and transportation.↗

The 2026–27 calendar adds useful operating detail: students must finish their last commitment before leaving, then return in time for their afternoon activity or by 7:30 p.m., whichever comes first. It also marks two closed weekends when boarders may not leave.

Treat those rules as a planning benchmark; Mercersburg has not posted the 2027–28 calendar.↗

Mercersburg has not published complete phone and device rules. A school wellness article notes that phones are banned during family-style lunch, but that does not establish a complete school-day or dorm policy.↗↗

The public Blue Book currently shows an introduction and change notice, not the detailed policy chapters. Lights-out, check-ins, phone collection, room search, visitation, and discipline are therefore unresolved here.↗

Request the complete current Blue Book before signing. Ask what differs by grade, whether parents receive rule-change notices, and which policies can change during the contract year.↗

The afternoon requirement has several legitimate routes

A sport is not mandatory, but participation in the physical-activity program is required every term. Options include athletics, theatre, dance, outdoor education, campus internships, and community engagement.↗↗

Mercersburg says 75% of students participate in at least one sport. It lists 26 varsity teams plus junior-varsity and third-team levels, but does not publish roster access or playing-time distributions.↗

The Burgin Center is a 65,000-square-foot arts facility with a 599-seat theatre, black box, recital spaces, dance studios, digital art, and ceramics. Facilities do not show student access by themselves.↗

Outdoor education uses local trails, rivers, and slopes for climbing, biking, kayaking, skiing, and overnight trips. The school says it provides equipment.↗

Families should ask about medical screening, instructor credentials, emergency communication, waivers, weather limits, trip charges, and alternatives. Public pages do not answer those risk questions.↗

Mercersburg lists more than 30 clubs, but student-led offerings change. Ask what actually met last term, which groups had adult advisers, and how often each convened.↗

Round-the-clock nursing does not equal long-term clinical care

The Health Center operates around the clock while school is in session, with a licensed nurse always present. The team includes nurses, nurse practitioners, a physician, and athletic trainers.↗

Licensed counselors provide short-term support. Students needing longer or specialized treatment may use outside providers in Hagerstown, with fees charged to the family.↗

A school magazine article reports three full-time licensed mental-health providers and an around-the-clock crisis counselor. It also reports 30 employees trained in Youth Mental Health First Aid.↗

Be sure to confirm those wellness staffing figures for 2027. While that article offers helpful perspective, it does not share counselor caseloads, wait times, session limits, or total students served.↗↗

The school does not publicly detail parent notification, confidentiality limits, medication management, psychiatric care, or eating-disorder support. Policies for substance treatment, hospitalization, medical leave, and returning to campus also remain unstated.↗↗

A student with ongoing therapy, psychiatric medication, disordered eating, or complex chronic illness needs a pre-enrollment care plan. Include transport, payment, emergency decisions, and missed-class recovery.↗

International diversity is clear, but daily belonging takes deeper questions

Current inclusion data report 22% international students from 38 countries, 31% domestic students of color, and 50% receiving financial aid. These categories use different denominators.↗

The 2025–26 profile reports 33% students of color and 51% receiving aid. Those figures are not directly interchangeable with the current domestic-only race measure.↗↗

Published affinity groups serve Asian, Black, gender-and-sexuality, international, Jewish, Latinx or Hispanic, multiracial, and Muslim students. Ask about meeting frequency, adviser training, privacy, and participation.↗

Mercersburg says it has no formal faith affiliation. A voluntary ecumenical Protestant service is offered on Sundays, which families should distinguish from required community gatherings.↗

The rural location makes every closure and appointment operational

Mercersburg places Baltimore-Washington and Dulles airports about 90 minutes away, Reagan National within two hours, Harrisburg airport 90 minutes away, and Hagerstown’s regional airport 30 minutes away.↗

The school places Harrisburg Amtrak about 75 minutes away and Hagerstown Greyhound about 30 minutes away. It warns that local ride-share service is limited and recommends arranging a return driver.↗

Thanksgiving, winter, and spring vacations close campus. The 2026–27 calendar publishes that year's departure and return windows, but it does not promise 2027–28 dates or explain late stays, early returns, school shuttles, fares, or emergency guardianship.↗↗

International applicants can receive F-1 visa assistance after admission. Public pages do not state I-20 timing, document deadlines, SEVIS guidance, travel-signature workflow, or a guardian requirement.↗

Upperclass students may apply for spring or summer domestic and international travel. Destinations, selection, subsidies, cancellation terms, and family-paid costs vary or remain unpublished.↗

Build a complete yearly travel map before depositing. Include move-in, family weekend, major closures, long weekends, medical visits, storage, flight disruptions, visa needs, and adult handoffs.↗↗

A credible historical abuse allegation deserves a current accountability answer

In 2017, WITF reported that Mercersburg leaders found credible an allegation against the late former teacher, dorm dean, and coach Paul Suerken concerning abuse roughly four decades earlier.↗

WITF reported that the school promised a full external investigation by T&M Protection Resources and invited alumni to share information. WITF's 2017 account stops before a final outcome and identifies no later governance or safeguarding changes.↗

For an enrolling family, the unanswered questions are whether the investigation concluded, whether findings were shared, and what governance or safeguarding changes followed.↗

The published boarding number is a benchmark, not a family budget

Current 2026–27 tuition is $81,600 for boarding students and $53,340 for day students. Fall 2027 prices are not yet published.↗

Boarding tuition includes room, all meals, Health Center access, technology, laundry, academics, and school activities and events. “Included” does not mean every related service has no charge.↗

Mercersburg lists textbooks, medical-appointment transportation, certain health services, private music lessons, athletic attire, and store or café spending as possible additional costs.↗

An annual senior fee and an annual living-abroad fee also exist, but the public page does not state their amounts. Families should request the complete 2027–28 fee schedule.↗

Budget separately for travel, visa and SEVIS costs, insurance, guardianship, break lodging, storage, outside therapy, testing, tutoring, equipment, optional global programs, and personal spending.↗↗↗

The financial aid promise is generous, but scholarship and international rules are narrower

Mercersburg says it meets full demonstrated need for every admitted family. It reports nearly $12 million in aid and says about half of families receive need-based or merit assistance.↗↗

Clarity materials are due January 15, and families reapply yearly. The school reviews income, assets, expenses, debts, and circumstances rather than using tuition affordability as a simple income threshold.↗

Separated parents, partners, and stepparents generally submit separate forms. Mercersburg may impute income for a nonworking parent, with stated exceptions including disability, retirement, or care of a young child.↗

Student assets are assessed across Mercersburg and four college years. That policy can make funds in the student’s name materially different from parental savings.↗

Named merit and access scholarships are described for domestic applicants. Qualifying domestic boarding admits with full demonstrated need are automatically considered for access scholarships; named recipients receive full tuition, room, board, and $5,000 a year for listed incidentals.

Mercersburg does not publish the number awarded in a typical cycle.↗

International need-based aid appears possible, because the broad promise includes admitted families and school guidance discusses overseas income verification. The international allocation and admission effect remain unpublished.↗↗

The 2025–26 profile reports 51% receiving aid. A prior school article reported $11.2 million for 178 students, or 38%, excluding tuition remission; definitions and years differ.↗↗

Request a four-year estimate showing tuition growth, expected contribution growth, travel, and recurring extras. “Full need” depends on the school’s calculation, not the family’s preferred budget.↗

Grade 9 is primary, but later entry is real

Mercersburg says students apply and enroll at all four high-school grades, with Grade 9 as the primary entry point. Gateway's live Fall 2027 listing accepts boarding and day applications for Grades 9, 10, 11, 12, and PG.

Neither source gives Fall 2027 openings by grade.↗↗

The 2025–26 profile says Mercersburg intentionally grows each class and recognizes multiple entry points. Published graduation requirements separately address students entering Grades 9, 10, 11, and 12.↗↗

The published evidence supports a real senior-entry pathway, not a promise of abundant senior seats. The school does not publish available places, offers, yield, wait-list movement, or aid capacity by grade, boarding status, nationality, or gender.↗↗↗

A transfer family should request a written credit audit before signing. The diploma totals are 57, 42, 27, and 14 academic credits for entrants in Grades 9, 10, 11, and 12.↗

Fall 2027 admissions: the calendar is live

Applications and financial-aid materials are due January 15. Admissions decisions arrive March 10, and enrollment replies are due April 10.↗↗

Applicants may use Gateway or the Standard Application Online (SAO). Day applicants must use SAO.

The application fee is $50 for domestic applicants and $100 for international applicants.↗

Mercersburg lists a student application, the current and previous two years of transcripts, and three recommendations. An admission interview must be completed before January 15.↗↗

The school offers current Fall 2027 interview days on November 7, December 13, January 9, and January 23. The last date follows the stated application and interview deadline.↗↗

Do not assume a January 23 visit satisfies the stated interview deadline. If that is your only available appointment, get written confirmation from the admission office first.↗↗

A need-based application-fee waiver may be available. A separate FAQ says merit-scholarship candidates are not eligible, so merit families should confirm the rule before requesting one.↗↗

Testing rules change after Grade 10

Grades 9 and 10 are test-optional for admission. However, SSAT or ISEE scores are still required if those applicants want merit-scholarship consideration.↗

Grades 11, 12, and PG must submit PSAT, ACT, or SAT scores. The page does not publish minimums, score distributions, or different expectations by entry grade.↗

The requirements list also complicates things by calling standardized testing “preferred.” Families should stick to the specific grade guidelines and get written confirmation before withholding an upper-grade score.↗

Nonnative English speakers submit TOEFL, Duolingo, or IELTS unless they have spent at least three years in an English-medium school. Mercersburg publishes a Duolingo suggestion of 135.↗

The website lists a TOEFL “suggested score” of 20 without explaining the test scale or section. That number is confusing, so ask for written clarification before planning around it.↗

The page names IELTS but gives no suggested IELTS score. Families should also ask whether English testing is waived automatically or only after a transcript review.↗

The available-seat number is not an acceptance rate

Mercersburg says it interviews nearly 800 students for about 150 available spaces. Offers, yield, wait-list size, and enrolled-student counts for that same pool are not published.↗

Do not divide 150 by 800 and call the result an acceptance rate. Available places are not offers, and interviewed students may not equal completed applications.↗

The school uses a wait list and fills openings according to the fit of each available place. It publishes no movement history, notification date, or separate aid practice.↗

A later-entry, aid-seeking, international, or specialized applicant should ask whether a realistic seat exists before investing heavily. Public numbers cannot answer that family-specific question.↗↗

Our readConfidence: Medium

A broad, appealing school—provided the operating answers fit your child

Published evidence gives Mercersburg a real, coherent case: a mostly boarding community, genuine later-entry routes, weekday academics, advisers with no more than eight students, meaningful afternoon choice, strong facilities, and ambitious senior work.

Our inference is that the school will reward the energetic generalist who asks for help before a wobble becomes a crisis. The same evidence is less reassuring for a student who needs intensive learning intervention, long-term campus therapy, dedicated English-language instruction, or highly predictable travel and household rules.
