Horse requirement
Daily horse care is a real test of fit
Ninth graders are paired with a horse during their first week and ride for the full year, even though most arrive without riding experience. Transfer sophomores and juniors take on one athletic season in the barns, which other school pages describe as one trimester.
The routine starts early and stays physical: students muck stalls before morning classes, ride in the afternoon, and feed their horses each evening. The school’s broader overview says these duties continue on weekends during the required program.
Put those blocks onto a daily calendar: morning stall mucking, classes, afternoon riding, and evening feeding, alongside rehearsals, team sports, study hall, and sleep. The question for a family is not whether a student finds horses romantic on a campus tour, but whether they will shovel manure before breakfast when an essay is due.
Every student completes a first-year horse-packing trip, and ninth graders train for Big Gymkhana. The facilities include about 120 horses, nine barn buildings, arenas, trails, and a pack station.
Disclose allergies, fear, injury history, mobility limits, sensory needs, or ethical concerns before applying. The horse and academic-support pages do not explain exemptions, adaptations, reassignment, or injury recovery, so get the answer for your child in writing.
Residential life
Grade-based dorms, faculty neighbors, and student leaders
Thacher houses students across seven residences. Ninth and tenth graders live in grade-based girls’ and boys’ dorms, while older students choose among girls’, boys’, and all-gender housing, including Sespe, which houses ten juniors and seniors.
Ninth graders receive single rooms, and sophomores choose their roommates.
Campus life revolves around boarding: 230 of 253 students in 2025–26 (about 91%) live on campus, and 97% of faculty live on campus alongside them. Advisors typically work with five or six students, change each year, serve as the family’s primary contact, and send two letters home annually.
Senior prefects carry significant responsibility: they enforce dorm rules, mediate disagreements, and check on prefectees nightly. Dorm heads and other faculty live nearby, but the dorm page does not give adults per dorm or overnight awake coverage, so ask where student leadership ends and adult safeguarding begins.
A supervised study hall runs Sunday through Thursday evenings; students may opt in, and the school may assign those needing more structure. Freshmen put phones away throughout evening study hall, and the school offers analog alarm clocks for students who want to keep devices off overnight.
Afternoon participation is 100%, and every student must play on one third, JV, or varsity team before graduation. Weekends feature outdoor trips, surfing, camping, dances, and excursions to Los Angeles or Santa Barbara, balanced against daily horse feedings.
Day families (the school recommends living within 20 miles; about 20 to 23 day students attend) should map late-night drives home after evening commitments.
Academics
Seminar-style classes and high expectations
Classes average 11 students with a 6.5-to-one student-faculty ratio, creating an environment where reading the material and speaking up are expected daily. Ninth and tenth grades establish common academic foundations, while older students move toward independent inquiry and student-designed xBlocks.
The curriculum relies on advanced and honors courses rather than Advanced Placement classes. Every student must complete two years of arts; ninth graders rotate through studio art, performance studies, and music before specializing in areas such as wood design.
Pacing can be demanding. In English III Honors, papers stretch from four-to-six pages in the fall to eight-to-ten pages in the spring, and course materials warn that tight scheduling can prevent a later move down to standard sections.
Request the current course catalog before finalizing course selection.
Juniors and seniors sit for unproctored examinations under an Honor Code centered on honor, fairness, kindness, and truth, with an elected student-faculty Honor Council hearing cases.
Workload and support
Academic support has clear, non-negotiable boundaries
Faculty help is woven into daily life through office hours, meals, free periods, advising, and supervised evening study hall. The Academic Support Director provides study-skills coaching, with one-to-one meetings typically scheduled biweekly depending on need and availability.
Accommodations have strict boundaries. Thacher can provide up to 50% extended time, assistive technology, and computer use.
It cannot accommodate 100% extended time or guarantee individual testing rooms.
Thacher also says it will not reduce assigned work, adjust deadlines, change grading, or fundamentally alter curriculum and pedagogy as accommodations. Students must request classroom accommodations from teachers 24 hours before an assessment.
Thacher does not provide psychoeducational evaluations and may require updated outside documentation. A student who relies on constant executive-function coaching or flexible deadlines should test these boundaries with admissions before applying.
Outdoor program
Backcountry wilderness travel is universal
Wilderness travel is a core requirement, not an optional club. The entire school leaves campus in small groups each fall and spring for weeklong backpacking trips led by experienced faculty and staff.
Ninth graders begin shortly after arrival with outdoor orientation, spending five days combining camping on Santa Cruz Island with campus transition work.
Beyond seasonal backpacking, the school maintains base camps in the Sespe and southern Sierra Nevada, supporting climbing, winter camping, kayaking, and horseback expeditions.
Advanced A- or B-level campers may plan and complete weekend backpacking trips without faculty supervision.
Health and safety
Health care, safeguarding, and campus hazards
Thacher reports a Health Center staffed around the clock, confidential professional counseling, and a student support team that coordinates counseling, student life, academics, and health. A full-time Director of Counseling and Wellness joined in 2023.
Senior Wyatt Mathis died of an on-campus overdose in May 2024. In March 2026, his parents filed a wrongful-death complaint alleging that the school failed to monitor him, verify outside treatment, or check on him when he missed dinner and a lecture.
In July 2026, the court overruled Thacher’s demurrer, allowing the suit to proceed. The allegations are unadjudicated.
A 2021 independent investigation by Munger, Tolles & Olson, commissioned by Thacher’s Board, documented credible sexual misconduct allegations spanning decades and described boundary failures, inadequate policies, and institutional failures to protect students. A 2023 supplement added allegations, and an appended review found a months-long 2021 mandatory-reporting delay caused by confused roles, not deliberate concealment.
A joint Sheriff–District Attorney investigation organized roughly 100 potential cases; three reached prosecutors, who declined charges because the statutes of limitation had expired. Thacher keeps the reports public and funds confidential survivor therapy through independently managed channels.
None of this is proof of current misconduct, and reform claims are not proof of execution.
Regional environmental hazards also require planning. Ojai’s official disaster guide highlights risks from wildfire, flooding, landslides, and earthquakes, compounded by constrained mountain access.
The 2017 Thomas Fire caused major regional damage and a partial city evacuation. Request a parent-facing summary of the school’s evacuation, shelter, reunification, horse-movement, and family-notification plans rather than a verbal assurance.
Travel and breaks
Planning travel and breaks in remote Ojai
Thacher estimates driving times at 50 minutes to Santa Barbara Airport, one hour 45 minutes to Hollywood Burbank Airport, and two hours to Los Angeles International Airport, with traffic adding variability.
The school explicitly cautions that rideshare services are not readily available within or from Ojai. Students cannot count on hailing an on-demand car to catch flights or return from breaks.
Tuition, aid, and full cost
Tuition, hidden expenses, and financial aid
For 2026–27, boarding tuition is $84,000 and day tuition is $68,050.
Thacher says it charges no fees beyond tuition, yet estimates about $1,500 for camping and riding gear, books, and academic supplies.
A realistic first-year budget therefore starts at $85,500 for a boarder and $69,550 for a day student, before adding family travel, flights, health insurance, private music lessons, and break lodging.
Need-based financial aid supports 31% of the student body, with an average grant of $64,993 (the 2025–26 facts page reported 28% and $64,813). Thacher is not need-blind.
New-family applications are submitted through Clarity, cost $60 unless waived, require 2024 and 2025 federal tax returns, and are due February 15, 2027. Awards are annual, so families reapply each year.
Families receiving at least 90% tuition aid may receive Olympus Fund help. Covered examples include books, family travel, gear, health insurance, and a student allowance.
A critical restriction for international applicants: all household income and assets must be reported on a United States tax return to qualify for financial aid, which may exclude families unable to produce one regardless of need.
How applying works
Applying for Fall 2027 entry
Fall 2027 admission is open for Grades 9, 10, and 11; Grade 12 is closed. Day admission is a small lane: the application page says about 20 day students attend and recommends living within 20 miles, while the 2025–26 facts page counts 23.
For Fall 2024 the school reported a 16% admit rate and 67% yield; those prior figures are not Fall 2027 odds, and nothing is broken out by grade or boarding status.
The application deadline is January 15, 2027. Admissions interviews are required: the application timeline lists January 20, 2027 as the deadline, while another section states January 22—families should schedule for January 20 or earlier.
Decisions are released March 10, with replies due April 10. From September through January, campus visits run Monday, Wednesday, and Friday mornings, and virtual interviews run Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Pacific; the visit is optional, the interview is not.
Standardized testing is required: applicants submit current-year SSAT or ISEE scores (Grade 10 and 11 applicants may submit the PSAT). Non-native English speakers must take the TOEFL or Duolingo unless they have completed three years at an English-medium school.
Entering ninth graders must complete Algebra 1 through quadratics before arrival.
Families can apply via SAO, Gateway, or Finalsite with a fee of $60 domestic or $120 international, with waivers available when cost creates hardship. Required materials are student and parent questionnaires, current- and previous-year transcripts, and current English and mathematics recommendations; a personal recommendation and a principal or counselor recommendation are optional.
For eligible historically underrepresented students with at least a B+ average, the Pegasus program covers a December 6–7 campus visit; its application is due November 1.
Athletic eligibility rules warrant caution: repeating a grade makes a student likely ineligible for California senior-year varsity competition under state rules, and California high-school transfers may also wait six weeks before varsity competition. Ask for a written review of credits, graduation, horse, arts, and athletic eligibility before depositing.
Our read: the program holds together, it is demanding, and it is unusually dependent on trust
Thacher’s program makes unusual sense as a whole. Classroom effort, horse care, dorm responsibility, athletics, arts, and wilderness travel all ask students to contribute reliably.
That same unity is also the fit risk. A student cannot choose the academics while treating horses, camping, peer leadership, or close communal living as decorative extras.
Evenings, horses, breaks and wildfire plans at Thacher
Thacher's horse program shapes daily life, so ask about evening check-ins, the weekly schedule and the evacuation plan.
