Dorm life on the Mesa

Cate enrolls 313 students high on the Mesa, and 79 percent of them board. The remaining fifth are day students who share the full daily run of the school: seated meals, required gatherings, Saturday classes, and late evenings for dinner, labs, and study hours.

Where you live decides your route: families whose primary address falls in Oxnard, Ventura, Santa Paula, Carpinteria, Summerland, Montecito, Santa Barbara, or Goleta must apply for a day place. Everyone outside that boundary applies to board.

Most faculty live on campus as dorm parents, several in apartments connected to the dorms. Every dorm has a resident faculty member on duty around the clock, backed by a named dorm head and several dorm parents, while Senior Prefects facilitate meetings, coordinate chores, and help shape the dorm’s climate.

All ninth graders live in Long House (single rooms) or ’25 House (doubles) and are usually in the dorm by 7:45 p.m. for study hall, with lights out at 10:30 p.m. and more flexibility in later years.

A September 2025 update described phone shelves during study hours and locked phone storage at lights out for ninth and tenth graders; confirm whether that practice continues.

One setting fact belongs in the family plan: a 2021 Montecito-Carpinteria fire-service risk assessment placed Cate in high and very-high fire-hazard severity areas.

Santa Barbara County released updated maps in 2025, so ask the school which designation governs its evacuation plan and how it accounts for every student when U.S. 101, the area’s primary evacuation route, closes.

The week and the breaks

The weekly rhythm, weekend shuttles, and break travel

The school week has a firm framework: mandatory Monday-evening convocations or occasional formal dinners, some Saturday classes, weeknight student groups, and study hours from 8 to 10 p.m. for grades 9 through 11.

Most federal and religious holidays outside major vacations are regular school days, though Cate occasionally calls a catch-up weekend with no new homework assigned. On weekends, shuttles run into Carpinteria and Santa Barbara, alongside campus dances, camping trips, service projects, and outdoor excursions.

The campus sits about three miles from the beach and downtown Carpinteria, 20 minutes from Santa Barbara, and 90 minutes from Los Angeles. With permission, a boarder can spend a non-school night at a day student’s home.

Outings Week is a class-wide commitment, not a field trip: ninth graders go to Pyles Camp in Sequoia National Forest, sophomores backpack in Yosemite, and juniors take a roughly 40-mile full-pack Kern River trip.

Boarders must leave campus for three scheduled breaks each year.

On the current calendar, departures are by 3 p.m. for fall break (November 21 to November 30), winter break (December 19 to January 5), and spring break (February 27 to March 15), with grades 9 through 11 packing up for summer by 3 p.m. on June 5.

That rhythm requires real travel planning, especially for the 21 percent of boarders who come from overseas. International applicants—defined as those needing an F-1 visa and Cate I-20, or whose families live abroad—are evaluated in the same pool and against the same standards as domestic students.

If English is not a student's first language, Cate asks for testing: a minimum of 110 on the TOEFL, 7.5 on IELTS, or 140 on Duolingo, waived only after two consecutive years at an English-medium school or an American junior boarding school.

Academics

Inquiry, course load, and advanced study

Students take five academic courses each trimester plus the arts requirement: Foundation Arts in ninth grade, then two more yearlong arts courses. Most students do not take Advanced courses until grade 11 or 12.

As prior-year evidence, a 2024 school article said ninth and tenth graders had to play at least two seasons of interscholastic athletics, with fall theater and a local service program as alternatives in some cases; verify the Fall 2027 rule. Transcripts show no class rank, and cumulative GPA starts counting in tenth grade.

The grade point calculation includes Cate courses and approved outside programs, adding a full point for Advanced work and a half-point for Honors, with grades capped at A.

In the recent course guide, five courses were standard and 6.5 units the maximum; a full-credit subject met for at least three 65-minute periods each week, and ninth-grade Humanities was an integrated, two-unit course spanning English and history. Current materials still highlight that interdisciplinary Humanities sequence.

Support

Advising, peer labs, and academic support

Academic support starts with the adviser and runs through weekly teacher office hours, trained peer tutoring, evening learning labs in writing, math, science, and languages, and a faculty-proctored study hall. Cate Academic Support Services (CASS) adds targeted, short-term coaching in executive function, study skills, reading comprehension, and writing, working alongside teachers rather than replacing them.

Cate welcomes neurodivergent applicants and asks families to share learning evaluations during admission so accommodations can be checked against the program.

Health and safeguarding

Health, counseling, and safeguarding

Student medical care and counseling center on Ellis House, which includes beds for overnight recovery. Hours run 7:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. weekdays and 7:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. weekends, with a registered nurse on call when doors close and dorm faculty on duty if a student falls ill at night.

A nurse on call is not the same as a nurse in the building overnight. The staff includes a medical director, nurses, and three certified athletic trainers.

Urgent medical or dental transport into Carpinteria or Santa Barbara is $30 round trip. A private Zoom room supports outside clinicians.

Students need active health insurance and a completed Magnus record before joining any school activities.

Campus counseling provides short-term individual therapy, offering 30- and 60-minute sessions between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. on weekdays, plus weekend and after-hours crisis coverage and outside referrals. Parents are not routinely notified of short-term counseling unless safety concerns or higher levels of care require involvement.

Confidential pathways for eating disorders and substance use allow students to get help without triggering discipline. In 2021, an independent investigation interviewed 54 people and made findings regarding 17 respondents, naming seven and leaving ten unnamed, substantiating serious historical misconduct by former faculty.

Current reporting routes include trusted adults, SHIRT members, the Head of School, police, and a 24-hour STESA hotline, with all abuse reported to Child Protective Services. Staff receive annual mandated-reporter and twice-yearly anti-harassment training, prefects and teaching assistants receive boundary training, and a board committee oversees community care.

Cost and aid

Tuition, financial aid, and the all-in cost

For 2026–27, boarding tuition is $87,340 and day tuition is $70,990. Cate maintains a $5.4 million aid budget, assisting roughly a quarter of students—the profile rounds to 26 percent, the aid page lists 24.6 percent.

Grants are strictly need-based, guided by Clarity within school policies, and admissions and aid decisions are separate. New families must submit aid materials by February 1, 2027, receiving decisions with admission.

International families can apply with local income verification and Cate’s worksheet, though overseas funding is limited and no scholarships exist.

A round trip for urgent medical or dental care in Carpinteria or Santa Barbara is $30, while optional Round Square conferences and service exchanges cost about $3,000, with proportional aid available.

Families must also budget for health insurance, textbooks, a laptop, art and music fees, athletic gear, outdoor equipment, testing, personal spending money, and travel home for the three mandatory breaks and summer.

Applying

Applying for Fall 2027 entry

Cate accepts Fall 2027 applications for grades 9, 10, and 11, with no admission for seniors, postgraduates, or midyear transfers. High school athletic eligibility is capped at eight consecutive semesters from the moment a student first enters ninth grade.

That clock runs whether a student plays or not, meaning a repeated grade can eliminate twelfth-grade sports eligibility.

Applications and test scores are due January 15, financial aid files close February 1, decisions arrive March 10, and admitted families must enroll by April 10.

Cate requires a Gateway profile, student writing, a parent statement, a counselor recommendation, current English and math recommendations, current and prior transcripts, testing, and a virtual interview; a special-interest reference is optional. Student writing must be entirely original: generative AI is barred across all essays and short answers.

Ninth and tenth graders must submit the SSAT or ISEE, where competitive applicants typically score around the 80th percentile on the Upper-Level SSAT or stanines 7 through 9 on the ISEE, though Cate sets no cutoff. Eleventh-grade applicants may submit the PSAT, SAT, or ACT instead.

All test scores must date between January 15, 2026, and January 15, 2027. The virtual interview lasts about 45 minutes, followed by a parent conversation, and opens for scheduling once the Gateway profile, application fee or waiver, and any required English results are submitted.

Cate specifies Zoom for the interview while noting that in-person interviews occur in select locations. International applicants are told to submit TOEFL scores before scheduling.

Optional three-hour campus visits run Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays starting in late September, including an assembly, a student-led tour, and an admissions presentation.

Cate is small and residential, so the useful questions are about who is on duty overnight, housing options, phone rules and what support can be put in writing.
