Start here: the relay and four checkpoints

A Fall 2027 application is best treated as a relay, not a twelve-month marathon of chores. Your job is to carry one application from your family's intention to the point where the school itself says the file is complete. Most of the stress lives in the handoffs.

The questions that matter are few: boarding or day, who submits which piece, and how you will know the school actually has it. The rest of this guide takes them in roughly that order.

You run the logistics: accounts, dates, payments, reminders. Your child writes their own essays, and teachers write and submit their own recommendations. Where a school asks for a parent statement, that one is yours. Keep those lanes clear and the calendar becomes your job instead of a family argument.

Four checkpoints are enough. Each has a parent lane, a lane for your child and their teachers, and a sign that the work landed.

This guide stays on logistics. The testing, interviewing, and writing have their own homes: SSAT and ISEE testing, interviews and campus visits, and essays and parent statements. When offers arrive, our offers, revisits, waitlists and contracts guide picks up the story.

Boarding, day, and submission

This is the one decision with a lock on it: Gateway does not let you change boarding or day status after you add a school, so settle it at home first.

SAO is gentler at the front door and fussier at the back. Before you pay for a school's application, you can edit the student information yourself on the dashboard. After payment, you email SAO with the request, and it is wise to tell the school directly too. Expect the submission date to update to the date of the change.

A platform edit does not prove a school will accept the switch, so ask the school first; Andover, for one, makes the choice one-time, at submission.

Gateway tracks submission, and its checklist updates as forms come in. Part 1, the common Candidate Profile, comes first and, with the fee where a school takes online payment, unlocks Part 2, which is different for every school.

SAO runs on a different trigger. Complete the student profile and pay the fee, or use a fee waiver if the school gave you one, and the school receives the profile plus anything else finished. Pieces completed afterward reach the school in real time. Payments happen in the parent or guardian account.

Not ready to apply? SAO also lets you share a basic profile with a school, which signals interest without submitting an application.

Where the pieces actually live

Gateway is the common front door. Behind it, schools differ on where the real work happens, and those differences are what trip families up.

Andover emails login details to its own application portal 24 hours after you submit the Candidate Profile. That portal handles the interview scheduler, the missing-items check, and the short video response. The school sets February 1, 2027 for the application and for financial aid.

Hotchkiss runs its main application through Gateway and sets its own calendar: application and aid are both due January 15, 2027, decisions post March 10, and families reply by April 10. It wants the profile in as early as possible, ideally before the interview, and it schedules no interviews over Thanksgiving or winter breaks.

Exeter moves the writing out of Gateway. The student essays and the parent statement go in the Exeter Applicant Portal, whose login arrives within 24 hours of the profile. Recommendations and transcripts stay in Gateway, where that section opens in October, and Exeter says it will not accept either one from the applicant. Its 2027-28 cycle runs to a January 15 deadline and March 10 decisions.

Choate offers a tidy example of the last mile. Once the Candidate Profile is in, families can follow progress both in Gateway and in Choate's own status portal.

Before any deadline, compare what your platform shows with what the school's portal or admission office sees, and ask about any gap. A mismatch found three weeks early is an email; found on deadline day, it is a scramble.

Teacher forms

In Gateway, you request each recommendation by entering the recommender's name and email, and you cannot write or submit one yourself. Recommenders must approve the request first, and your checklist updates as forms are completed.

Which teachers count differs. Andover wants English and math forms from current teachers and points a former teacher toward the personal recommendation. Hotchkiss takes English and math forms from last year's or this year's teachers.

Ask early, because teachers have their own classrooms to run, and give each one the earliest deadline on your list. Then confirm that each form arrived, not merely that you requested it. A quick check costs less than a surprise in January.

Aid dates and late files

Financial aid has its own form and deadline. Record both beside the admission dates. Our financial aid and total cost guide explains the process.

Choate draws a useful line. Its FAQ says an application submitted in Gateway by January 15 can still expect a March 10 decision if recommendations, transcripts, or scores trail in by February 1. An application that is itself late is considered as time allows, and Choate says it cannot guarantee that date.

Treat that as one school's description, not a rule for all of them; your own school's current dates are the authority, and rolling consideration is not a promise of dorm space or aid funding. If you are applying later, ask the school about both rather than assuming.

One thing to do next

Next, give each school you are seriously weighing one sheet: boarding or day, the portals it uses, the teachers it wants, where the writing goes, the application date, and the aid date. The sheet will not finish the work, but it makes each school's next step easy to see. If your list is still taking shape, start at our boarding schools hub.
