M10 and A10 are useful shorthand—and a dangerous assumption.

Canterbury shows why the exception matters. Its early application is due December 4, the decision comes December 15, and a binding contract with a 30% tuition deposit is due January 8. The student must withdraw other applications. Regular decision carries a 10% tuition deposit on A10.

Madeira separates day and boarding outcomes.Annie Wright offers international applicants an optional December 15 early deadline with a guaranteed January 15 result.Woodside Priory’s standard boarding decision is March 5; its day decision is March 12 and day agreement is due March 19.

A live page can still be old

As of September 2, Andover’s welcome page retained an April 10, 2026 date; Episcopal’s welcome page retained prior-cycle visit dates; Canterbury’s accepted page title still said 2026 while its copy referred to 2027–28; and Blair surfaced older-cycle process copy.

Annie Wright and Woodside Priory also mixed school-year labels. Save the dated offer and portal screen. Ask which date controls.

Use the revisit to investigate the weekly routine.

A revisit is not a victory lap. It is the family’s last structured chance to test the life behind the offer. Taft says its Fall 2027 admitted-student dates are still to be announced. Madeira publishes separate day and boarding windows. Episcopal’s live welcome page is a useful description of prior programming, but not a current date source.

The school may be trying toThe family should be trying to
Build belonging and help the student picture saying yesNotice whether the child can picture asking for help on a bad day
Show signature classes, traditions, teams, and facilitiesTest course access, ordinary workload, placement, and fallback choices
Introduce polished student and parent ambassadorsAsk how advisers, dorm adults, health staff, and teachers coordinate
Convert an admit before the reply deadlineResolve only the questions that could change the decision

Bring three questions, not thirty: one about the student’s academic stretch, one about life after 3 p.m., and one about what happens when something goes wrong. A family needing learning support, regular therapy, medication management, religious accommodation, elite arts, or specialized athletics should request a written operational answer before deposit.

When travel is impossible, ask for a virtual conversation with the people who would actually carry the student: adviser, dorm adult, learning-support contact, health professional, or program director. The goal is evidence, not equal access to every celebratory event. Our interview and campus-visit guide provides the observation framework.

If learning support, counseling, or medication could change the decision, use our boarding-school learning and mental-health guide to turn a general reassurance into a provider, frequency, handoff, and fallback plan before signing.

Name the request before asking for more money.

“Appeal” can mean four different things: correcting a data error, documenting a new circumstance, asking the school to reconsider its judgment, or waiting for aid funds to become available.

The reviewed schools do not publish one common appeal form or deadline. Ask the aid office which process applies and whether the enrollment deadline can move while it decides.

RequestUseful evidenceWhat not to assume
CorrectionExact field, correct amount, and tax or account recordA corrected value guarantees a larger grant
Changed circumstanceEvent date, revised annual cash effect, and supporting noticeA future projection will be treated as a final loss
Professional reconsiderationConcise family budget and the school-specific gapAnother school’s award must be matched
Aid waitlistRequested confirmation and a clear affordability boundaryFunding will appear before the contract deadline

Andover publishes M10 aid decisions and expects a family seeking aid to apply in the student’s initial year.Choate says financial need may influence admission; a student who enrolled without seeking aid generally needs a material adverse change to become eligible later. Loomis describes a small financial-aid waiting list and warns that later first-time aid is unlikely without changed circumstances.

Canterbury lets families explain special circumstances in Clarity, but also says late aid is limited. Annie Wright publishes a financial-aid wait pool, and its award appears with the contract. These are not promises that a persuasive letter creates money.

The safe answer while review is pending

Do not sign at an unaffordable contribution because someone is “taking another look.” Ask for the revised award and any deadline extension in writing. Without both, the existing award and existing clock still govern the family decision.

Nonrefundable deposit does not mean deposit-only risk.

The deposit reserves a place and is commonly credited toward tuition. The enrollment agreement may separately say that later installments or the full net tuition become owed after a withdrawal date. Families need the contract’s actual cancellation schedule; a school tuition page is not a substitute.

Annie WrightNonrefundable amount varies by Day, 5-day, or 7-day planThe family must obtain its amount from the contract.
Woodside PrioryDeposit is credited; amount is not publicAsk for the complete Fall 2027 worksheet and terms.

Episcopal’s current cost page publishes the $7,800 figure and aid proration. Loomis’s billing page supplies precise 2026–27 amounts, useful only when the year remains attached. Deerfield states that deposits are nonrefundable and credited. Annie Wright and Woodside Priory leave material Fall 2027 terms to the family’s agreement.

A parent’s contract checklist
  1. What exact amount is nonrefundable when we sign?
  2. On what date does liability become larger than the deposit?
  3. What later tuition is owed after withdrawal, and how must notice be delivered?
  4. Does financial aid reduce the deposit, later liability, and insurance premium?
  5. Is tuition-refund insurance required, included, optional, or waivable?
  6. What percentage does the plan reimburse, for which causes, after what waiting period?
  7. Are voluntary withdrawal, dismissal, mental-health leave, and preexisting conditions covered?
  8. What changes if the student cannot obtain a visa or arrive on time?
  9. Which payment-plan, late, international, health, travel, and technology charges remain?
  10. Does a later public-school or waitlist offer change any obligation?
  11. Which document controls when the website, offer, and enrollment agreement disagree?
  12. Who must sign, what law governs, and what dispute process applies?

If the agreement is unclear about large financial exposure, have a qualified lawyer in the relevant jurisdiction review it. This guide can identify the question; it cannot interpret a family’s contract.

Required, optional, and included are three different budgets.

Hotchkiss requires tuition refund insurance unless tuition and fees are paid in full by June 1. Families using an installment plan are automatically enrolled.Episcopal describes its plan as optional.Milton says tuition insurance is included in tuition.

None of those labels tells the family what event is covered. Obtain the certificate and ask about voluntary withdrawal, dismissal, medical leave, mental-health treatment, preexisting conditions, visa delay, late arrival, waiting periods, required attendance, and the reimbursement percentage.

Then compare the certificate with the contract. Insurance may reimburse part of an obligation without erasing the obligation itself.

Be clear once. Stay responsive. Do not build a campaign.

Andover describes an unranked waiting list. A family must return the response form and answer periodic reconfirmations; movement can happen from April through August, and the school does not publish a fixed list size.Blair maintains its own dedicated waitlist page. The school-specific channel controls; generic advice to send weekly letters can become noise.

Confirm the list in the requested place. State whether the school would be the student’s clear choice only if that is true. Send a material update—a new grade, honor, role, or family change—when it adds information. Then answer every check-in promptly and continue planning for the school where the student holds an actual seat.

Can a family put down two deposits?

The regular-round sources reviewed here do not create one national rule. That absence is not permission. Two enrollment agreements may contain incompatible promises, and the financial exposure may be larger than two lost deposits. Canterbury’s early decision is explicit: sign, pay 30%, and withdraw other applications.

First ask for a short written extension. If none is granted, deposit at one school only if the student can genuinely attend it while remaining on another school’s waitlist. Before any dual commitment, read both contracts and obtain written permission. A hoped-for waitlist offer is not a reason to sign an agreement the family already plans to break.

A later public result does not pause a private contract.

New York offers one precise Fall 2027 collision. Participating ISAAGNY Grade 9–12 schools may release decisions no earlier than 4 p.m. February 19, and replies are due at noon March 11. That gives a family roughly one day after common M10 boarding decisions to compare some offers.ISAAGNY’s common file date is not a boarding rule.

NYC Public Schools runs a separate process, and the Fall 2027 public offer dates were not used here to claim a fixed sequence because they were not yet published in the source checked. The same discipline applies elsewhere: district assignment, exam school, charter lottery, independent day school, and boarding offers each keep their own clock.

Ask the private school for a written extension and explain the exact public decision date. A school may say yes, no, or offer only a day or two. Until it says yes in writing, assume the original deadline and contract remain. A later public offer does not automatically release a signed private-school agreement.

The deposit often comes before the visa.

Canterbury issues an I-20 after the enrollment contract and deposit and says forms are usually emailed in early June.Madeira requires enrollment and its registration fee before I-20 issuance. It also publishes a $2,000 international fee, international health-insurance requirement, and U.S. guardian who can collect the student within 24 hours.

Annie Wright asks for a passport and proof of funds around $85,000 and says its I-20 route is for seven-day boarders. A five-day boarding offer is therefore not automatically a usable F-1 path.Exeter uses the same core application for domestic and international candidates, but immigration and financial certification still remain separate post-offer work.

The Department of State explains the student-visa sequence, and DHS provides the official SEVP school search. A visa denial or administrative delay does not itself establish a school refund right. Before signing, ask how the agreement and refund plan treat denial, delayed arrival, deferral, and a student who must begin remotely.

Compare the complete net package. Hotchkiss publishes aid that can reach books, supplies, spending money, travel, and insurance.Deerfield describes supplementary support that can include airfare and insurance.A larger tuition grant can still be the weaker offer if guardian, travel, break, or health costs remain uncovered.

Forty ways the same acceptance can require a different answer

Three M10 admits and no aid request

Compare the complete contracts and the child’s likely schedule before ranking revisits. A famous name does not answer dorm fit, support, travel, or liability.

One admit and no possible revisit trip

Ask for a virtual dorm, adviser, student-life, and support conversation. Missing an optional event should not force an uninformed yes.

Taft admit

Wait for Taft’s official Fall 2027 admitted-student dates. Do not book around a prior-year revisit calendar.

Andover admit

Use the offer portal and letter for the reply date. The live welcome page still displays April 10, 2026.

Exeter admit

Use the date in the actual offer. The current public application page establishes M10 but not a Fall 2027 reply date.

Choate admit

Do not inherit A10 from peer schools. Confirm the reply date and time zone in Choate’s own offer.

Canterbury early-decision offer

The January 8 binding contract, 30% tuition deposit, and withdrawal requirement make this a pre-M10 commitment.

Canterbury regular-decision offer

Compare its 10% tuition deposit and agreement with other A10 schools. The early-round percentage does not apply.

Madeira boarding applicant

Plan around an early-March decision and late-March or early-April admitted-family programming, not a generic M10 script.

Annie Wright international applicant

The optional early route can produce a January 15 decision, weeks before standard boarding results. Read its contract clock separately.

Woodside Priory day-and-boarding applicant

A March 5 standard-boarding result precedes the March 12 day decision. Decide whether those are genuinely interchangeable family lives.

Late March applicant

A school may have a bed without aid. Ask about both before paying for testing, travel, or another application.

Aid letter uses the wrong income

Request a correction with the exact field and supporting record. This is different from asking the school to change its judgment.

Parent lost a job after filing

Send dated evidence, a revised annual estimate, and a specific reconsideration request. Ask for a written reply extension while it is reviewed.

Award leaves a $20,000 gap

Ask once whether reconsideration is available. Do not sign at the current contribution expecting a later increase.

Business-owner family

Reconcile tax income, distributions, retained earnings, debt, and current cash. The school still controls its aid method.

Noncustodial parent refuses the aid file

Ask about waiver evidence immediately. A divorce agreement or difficult relationship does not automatically remove a school requirement.

Two households disagree about payment

Resolve who can sign and who will fund each installment before deposit. The child should not carry negotiations between adults.

Admitted but aid-waitlisted

Treat the seat as unaffordable until written funding arrives. Admission enthusiasm is not a bridge grant.

Full-pay first year with hoped-for aid later

Loomis and Choate publish reasons this is risky. Build four years at full pay unless changed-circumstance aid is confirmed in writing.

Aid recipient at Episcopal

Verify the prorated deposit in the actual agreement instead of budgeting from the full published $7,800 amount.

Loomis family using the billing page

Treat $7,734 boarding and $5,946 day deposits as 2026–27 benchmarks until the Fall 2027 contract supplies new figures.

Hotchkiss installment-plan family

Budget required tuition-refund insurance and read its certificate before selecting the plan.

Hotchkiss full-pay family

Confirm the June 1 full-payment condition if the family intends to waive refund insurance.

Milton family comparing prices

Count that tuition insurance is included. Do not add a separate premium copied from another school.

Child changes their mind after signing

Read the withdrawal schedule before notifying the school. Liability may already extend beyond the enrollment deposit.

Injury after signing

Check covered cause, effective date, exclusions, medical documentation, and reimbursement percentage. “Insured” does not mean fully refunded.

Voluntary withdrawal in July

Do not assume tuition insurance covers a preference change. The contract and certificate answer different questions.

Deposit at second choice, waitlist at Andover

Deposit only if the student can attend the second-choice school, then complete Andover’s requested reconfirmations.

Waitlist offer in August

Calculate the sunk deposit and any accrued tuition liability before accepting. A late offer does not release the first agreement.

Parents consider two deposits

Request extensions or written permission and read both agreements. Losing two deposits may not be the family’s maximum exposure.

Siblings face overlapping deadlines

Ask each school about aid-adjusted deposits and a short written extension. Do not let one child’s uncertainty become the other child’s burden.

NYC private offer plus boarding applications

The ISAAGNY Grade 9–12 reply is noon March 11, roughly one day after M10. Prepare comparison questions before either result arrives.

Public-school offer expected later

Ask the private school for an extension, but assume its original contract deadline remains unless the school changes it in writing.

International admit waiting for an I-20

Canterbury and Madeira issue the form after enrollment steps. The financial commitment therefore begins before visa processing is complete.

Visa is denied or delayed

Federal visa rules do not cancel a school contract. Find the applicable refund, withdrawal, and insurance terms before signing.

International family receives aid

Compare travel, insurance, guardian, break, and incidental support—not just the tuition grant.

Madeira international admit

Confirm the U.S. guardian who can collect the student within 24 hours, health coverage, international fee, and I-20 sequence.

Annie Wright five-day boarder needs F-1 status

Five-day boarding is not the published I-20 route. Verify seven-day eligibility before treating the offer as usable.

Deerfield day applicant for Fall 2027

Deerfield’s move to a fully boarding model changes the family life being chosen. Confirm the comprehensive Fall 2027 price in the offer.

Our read

Our read: the best yes leaves room for an honest no.

An acceptance deserves celebration, but it does not require immediate surrender to momentum. The strongest family decision can survive a plain reading of the contract, an ordinary-day revisit, a complete four-year budget, and the possibility that the favorite waitlist never moves.

If those tests produce a calm yes, the student can enter school carrying anticipation instead of an invisible obligation to make every sacrifice worthwhile.

Start with the boarding-school financial-aid and total-cost guide when the award is still the central uncertainty. Then use the dorm, weekend, support, and safeguarding guide to investigate the life the contract is buying.
