Know what is what
The charter, authorizer, campus, and temporary site are different things
Legal operator: Palisades Charter High School is an independent public charter and California public-benefit corporation governed by its own elected stakeholder board. It is directly funded and operates as its own local educational agency for many purposes.
Authorizer and site owner: Los Angeles Unified is the chartering authority, conducts annual oversight, owns the Bowdoin/Temescal site under the sole-occupant agreement, and is leading the fire-recovery environmental and capital work. LAUSD is not PCHS’s day-to-day governing board.
Physical campus: 15777 Bowdoin Street is again the operating school. It contains repaired legacy buildings and interim instructional spaces while the permanent project proceeds.
A restored pool, stadium track, and turf do not mean every pre-fire classroom or athletic space is restored.
Former temporary site: “Pali South” at 302 Colorado Avenue in Santa Monica opened April 22, 2025 and served as the in-person campus until the January 2026 return. It is not the regular Fall 2027 campus.
The standing Virtual Academy is a separate ongoing independent-study option, not another name for emergency remote school.
Wildfire recovery
Back on campus is not the same as finished rebuilding
The dated sequence is clear: the January 2025 fire closed the campus; virtual instruction ran from January 21 through April 18; Pali South opened April 22; and the main campus reopened January 27, 2026 after cleanup, remediation, repairs, testing, clearance, and interim classroom installation.
LAUSD says permanent work will replace classroom buildings, restore athletic facilities, and add wildfire-resilient design, with completion targeted for late 2028. The February 2026 presentation showed design and approvals preceding a planned early-2027 construction start and fourth-quarter 2028 occupancy.
A target is not a guarantee; scope, approvals, procurement, environmental findings, and emergencies can move it.
Environmental work did not stop at reopening. The LAUSD portal lists spring and summer 2026 monitoring, periodic indoor sampling, mold assessment, soil reports, dieldrin assessment, soil-removal completion, and drinking-water testing.
PCHS announced selected-location follow-up sampling for July 7–8, with results to follow.
A Los Angeles Fire Health Study consortium reviewed the reopening work at LAUSD’s request and supported return with recommendations for continued monitoring. That is meaningful third-party context, but it is neither a promise of zero risk nor a replacement for reading later OEHS reports.
Board records also show some parents continued to ask about VOC testing, cleaning, filters, and symptom tracking.
Our practical inference for Fall 2027: students are expected at Bowdoin, not Pali South, but they should expect construction-zone constraints and changing room or field access. Ask for the then-current phasing map, noise and dust controls, air-monitoring results, evacuation routes, and spaces each likely activity will actually use.
Residency and lottery
A boundary preference is powerful; it is not permission to skip the application
The live Admissions page orders preferences as: former Palisades High attendance-area residents; siblings of admitted or attending students; children of PCHS staff, capped at 5% of enrollment; Paul Revere Charter Middle culminators; students qualifying for free or reduced-price meals; other LAUSD-boundary residents; then California residents outside LAUSD.
PCHS explicitly says every prospective student must apply, including residents, Paul Revere students, and siblings. The lottery is not first-come, first-served inside the on-time window; applications are sorted by preference.
The public page does not clearly explain tie-breaking within every preference category, overlapping preferences, or the exact audit used to verify each preference.
Lotterease issues accepted or waitlisted status electronically, exposes an application history log to the family, and, according to PCHS, cannot be manually adjusted by school staff. The school also says falsification voids an application and missed emails or deadlines remain the family’s responsibility.
Use LAUSD’s address-based Home School search, then ask PCHS to confirm former-boundary status before the deadline. OLR later requires residency evidence.
The public materials do not settle every shared-custody, temporary-housing, post-fire displacement, move-date, or boundary-challenge scenario.
Late applications are a materially weaker lane. The standing page says timestamp-ordered late applications are considered only after the on-time Lotterease waitlist is exhausted.
The Fall 2027 application page says late applications open December 1, 2026, but the detailed late page still describes Fall 2026; confirm the new form and rule before relying on it.
Grade 9 reality
The main doorway is large, but there is no honest published probability
Grade 9 is the natural entry year. The admissions FAQ estimated 750 Grade 9 openings for 2026–27, versus 50 in each upper grade, and warned that numbers vary.
PCHS has not posted a Fall 2027 Grade 9 seat count.
A February 2026 board packet recorded 778 Grade 9 lottery records: 647 marked accepted, 73 on hold, 47 not coming, and 11 in another approved status. It also showed 201 late-application records and a 686-student Grade 9 projection.
Those are moving administrative statuses, not offers divided by unique eligible applicants and not odds for the next cycle.
The missing denominators matter: PCHS does not publish unique on-time applicants by preference, verified eligibility, initial offers, yield, final enrollment, waitlist movement, sibling overlap, or resident versus nonresident outcomes. Without that table, a single acceptance percentage would be misleading.
Upper-grade admission exists only when space is available and sequence fit works. Families considering Grade 10–12 should ask about credits, math and language placement, graduation requirements, activities eligibility, and whether the student can enter a multi-year pathway—not infer access from a nominal 50-seat prior estimate.
The school week
Long blocks reward organization—and magnify a missed day
On a regular odd/even day, Period 0 runs 7:30–8:23, the main day begins at 8:30, and three 101- to 106-minute blocks end at 2:46. Period 7 runs 2:53–3:48.
Students normally see half of their six-course schedule each day.
Pali Period days shorten each main block to 87 minutes and insert a 40-minute session before lunch. School records describe Pali Period as a place for intervention, clubs, affinity programs, academic enrichment, safety, and community programming; what a particular student receives can vary by week.
Attendance is recorded every period. In a block schedule, missing one day can mean losing the equivalent of multiple conventional lessons, while a long commute makes tardiness more likely.
Ask each teacher how absences, labs, performances, tests, and missed office hours are recovered.
The campus is large enough to feel like a small college rather than a contained academy. The 2025–26 CDE census counted 2,393 students, down from 2,920 in the pre-displacement 2024–25 SARC.
That change means old class-size, culture, and staffing ratios need current confirmation.
Freshman academics
A common six-course frame, with meaningful placement decisions
The current Grade 9 plan is six courses: Honors English 9 for everyone; mathematics based on current course, final grades, and state scores; Biology, Conceptual Physics, or Chemistry subject to prerequisites; PE regardless of athletic participation; and two slots drawn from world language, electives, or academic support.
World-language access is not automatic. The current rule requires at least a C in both semesters of Grade 8 English for Spanish, French, or Italian, while Spanish for Spanish Speakers has no such minimum.
Students who are ineligible or opt out may take two electives, but college-bound families should map the A–G language expectation.
A limited summer Geometry acceleration route exists for incoming freshmen recommended by their middle school. That is not the same as a universal placement test or an entitlement to skip a course.
Ask for the evidence rule, capacity, review path, and downstream math sequence.
PCHS requires 230 credits, at least six courses per semester, subject credits, testing, a postsecondary plan, and community service. Graduation minimums do not equal UC/CSU A–G preparation: world language is not required for the PCHS diploma, and additional math, science, language, and approved electives may be needed for a student’s plan.
Advanced and applied paths
The menu is deep; access and continuity deserve separate questions
The 2024–25 SARC counted 29 AP courses with at least one enrollee and 46.58% of students in an AP course. The 2025–26 school profile reports 2,082 AP exams in 26 subjects in May 2025, with 88% scoring 3 or higher.
The denominator is exams, not distinct students or every enrolled student.
The live planning page warns that many AP courses assign summer work and that final schedules depend on teacher recommendations, availability, and balancing. A course catalog proves description and prerequisites, not that a section will run or every qualified student will get it.
The current CTE page names pathways across business, computer science, culinary, digital media, film, journalism, makerspace, dance, music, theater, and photography. Some lead to AP or capstone work, and film includes dual enrollment.
Ask for pathway-completion counts, schedule conflicts, equipment costs, and post-fire room capacity.
PCHS says it has three school-assigned dual-enrollment courses each semester and also supports approved community-college concurrent enrollment for acceleration, credit, recovery, or schedule fit. College work creates a permanent college transcript; verify counseling, transferability, deadlines, and how PCHS records the course.
International Baccalaureate is not yet a promised pathway. PCHS is an IB Diploma Programme candidate school, and its own page says candidacy does not guarantee authorization.
Do not build a Fall 2027 four-year plan around IB until authorization, launch year, courses, staffing, access, costs, and AP interaction are formally published.
Workload and consistency
The risk is not just rigor; it is variation across a very large program
Long blocks can support labs, discussion, production, and fewer nightly transitions. They also allow a large assessment or weak class match to dominate a day.
PCHS does not publish a reliable homework-hours range by course, AP combination, pathway, or grade.
A January 2026 board packet reported first-semester F shares of 11.82% in mathematics, 7.45% in science, 6.37% in social science, 5.92% in world language, and 4.25% in English. It did not provide course, grade, student, teacher, or repeat-enrollment denominators, and the semester occurred at Pali South.
Use it as a question-generating signal, not a teacher verdict.
The school-produced 2026 survey summary described teaching quality as a strength but cited inconsistent grading and feedback, academic-support gaps, and reliance on outside help, particularly in math and science. It also said 62% of students rely on outside tutoring, but published no respondent count or sampling method on the summary slides.
The 2024–25 SARC averages—24 students in English, 22 in math, 27 in science, and 23 in social science—hide wide tails. It also counted 29 English, 24 math, 29 science, and 42 social-science classes with 33 or more students.
Ask about the actual sections in a proposed schedule.
Support and disability
There is a real continuum; the current caseload is the missing fact
The public support map includes counseling, Student Success Team review, Study Skills, tutoring and Study Center, Math Lab, teacher help, mental-health referral, 504 plans, special education, credit recovery, Pali Academy, Virtual Academy, affinity programs, and freshman transition support.
For IEP students, PCHS identifies itself as a founding member of LAUSD SELPA’s Charter Operated Programs unit. It describes related services including speech, occupational and physical therapy, hearing or vision itinerant support, counseling, learning-center access, co-taught classes, specialized classes, and functional life-skills programming as specified by an IEP.
The 2024–25 SARC—before the full enrollment decline—listed 11 counselor FTE, a 271.91 pupil-to-academic-counselor ratio, two psychologists, two social workers, two nurses, one speech/language/hearing specialist, and six nonteaching resource specialists. Those counts combine roles and are not current caseload guarantees.
Current multilingual supports include ELD, tutorial and literacy classes, sheltered English and math, credit recovery, ELPAC work, and Spanish for native speakers. CDE counted only 32 English learners, 1.3% of 2025–26 enrollment; a small program can be personal, but it can also have limited section flexibility.
The mental-health page foregrounds crisis lines and an anonymous school tip line; board reporting during the return described individual counseling, crisis response, referral, monitoring, and trauma-informed flexibility. Ask what is school-based short-term support, what is assessment or ongoing therapy, what requires an outside referral, and the current wait time for each.
Alternative programs
Flexibility exists, but it is not an admissions shortcut
Virtual Academy is a standing PCHS independent-study program with A–G-aligned courses, independent work, calendar deadlines, mandatory orientation, counselor entry, in-person testing, and possible waitlists. It can serve working students, performers, athletes, students with attendance or schedule barriers, and students recovering credit.
Pali Academy is a smaller credit-recovery community for students who have fallen behind, entered by counselor, dean, SST, or administrator referral and subject to space. It is not a separate lottery school or a preselected freshman small-school track.
A January 2026 report listed 299 Virtual Academy students and 65 Pali Academy students during the return semester. Those are prior-cycle snapshots shaped by displacement; ask how many remain in each model in Fall 2027 and what proportion returns to traditional classes.
Arts, athletics, activities
A major strength—subject to auditions, cuts, space, and late rides
The arts menu spans art history, band, ceramics, choir, dance, film, graphic design, orchestra, painting, photography, studio art, and theater. Advanced courses include portfolios, ensembles, productions, and audition- or prerequisite-based capstones, so “offered” does not mean beginner access at every level.
Current athletics list cross-country, football, golf, tennis, volleyball, water polo, basketball, cheer, soccer, wrestling, baseball, beach volleyball, lacrosse, softball, swim and dive, and track and field. Annual clearance is required; public pages do not publish team-by-team tryout, cut, roster, participation, or full-cost data.
Commute and transportation
An enrollment seat and a bus seat are two separate outcomes
The 2026–27 school-bus program cost $2,800 in ten $280 autopay installments. It required a full-year commitment after the September 30 cancellation deadline.
PCHS offered a 50% subsidy to qualifying families whose aid application was filed by June 30.
Every school-bus route was full by August 18, 2026, and the school opened a waitlist. The program required an enrolled-student ID and first payment to secure a seat, so families could not lock transportation when applying months earlier.
Fall 2027 price, routes, subsidy rules, registration day, and capacity are not posted.
Public transit can be much cheaper. PCHS currently distributes free GoPass/TAP codes; Metro 602 has two afternoon school-day departures; and Big Blue Bus Line 9 Pali Express connects the Downtown Santa Monica E Line station, leaving there at 7:50 a.m. and Pali at 3:14 p.m. These times and free-fare terms require Fall 2027 reconfirmation.
Current school-bus schedules warn families to arrive ten minutes early and acknowledge unpredictable LA traffic. Test the door-to-door trip at 7:30 a.m., 2:46 or 3:48 p.m., and after an activity—not just a weekend map estimate.
A 6 p.m. late bus serves students in sanctioned after-school activities or documented academic help, with roster, pass, ID, scanning, and on-time rules. The current page says rides may be charged but does not publish a current dollar amount or guarantee every destination.
A game, performance, or rehearsal may end after departure.
Climate, safety, safeguarding
Read both the systems and the lived signals
The 2024–25 SARC reported a 0.07% suspension rate and no expulsions. Low exclusion is encouraging, but it does not measure bullying, harassment, incident severity, restorative response, reporting confidence, or whether families withdrew.
The 2026 school-produced survey summary described culture as broadly positive while reporting that about 24% of students were uncomfortable sharing opinions with peers, roughly one in four experienced bullying or peer conflict at least occasionally, and about 11% of families reported safety concerns.
It published no sample sizes, response rates, item wording, or subgroup tables, so treat these as self-selected signals.
The March 2026 safety plan described seven-day security staffing, Raptor visitor screening, cameras, monthly drills, staff refreshers, interim-classroom changes, and an LAUSD-approved secondary evacuation area because the former baseball field is no longer the primary staging site.
PCHS publishes a student and staff Title IX route, a uniform-complaint route, an anonymous tip line, and a June 2026 pupil-safety and school-employee-misconduct policy.
Families should still ask who receives reports about a teacher, coach, contractor, student, or administrator; what bypass exists when that person supervises the recipient; and what notice, interim protection, appeal, and anti-retaliation rules apply.
Wildfire readiness belongs in safeguarding, not only facilities. Ask how AQI, high wind, red-flag conditions, road closures, power loss, evacuation orders, family reunification, bus rerouting, outdoor sports, and medically vulnerable students change operations—and who has authority to close or evacuate the charter-occupied LAUSD site.
Tuition and full cost
Tuition-free does not mean cost-free
PCHS is a public charter and charges no tuition. For 2026–27, every student receives one breakfast and one lunch each school day without charge, regardless of income.
The meal application still affects school funding and eligibility records.
The large optional expense is transportation: $2,800 for the current school-bus year before subsidy, compared with a currently free GoPass. Families should also budget for the time cost of driving, carpool unreliability, or an activity pickup when the late bus does not fit.
The current back-to-school flyer lists optional items including a $35 activity card, $100 yearbook, $15 PE shirt, $15 PE shorts, and $170–$175 spirit or freshman packages. The linked file carries an older filename even though it appears in the live 2026–27 packet; verify pricing and whether any item is truly required.
Unpublished variable costs include AP exams and waivers, calculators and devices, arts supplies, athletic gear, team or booster expectations, tournament travel, field trips, dances, parking, lost-item replacement, and dual-enrollment materials. Public-school access should not depend on an optional donation; ask for the written fee-waiver and participation policy.
Fall 2027 admissions
Use the posted dates—and flag the page-title error
The school’s application page lists Lotterease opening September 28, 2026 at 8 a.m. and closing November 30 at 4 p.m.; the lottery and electronic notifications are January 11, 2027; seat acceptance is due January 25 at 4 p.m.; and Online Registration is due February 8.
The same page calls this “2026–27 Application Information,” an internal mismatch with its September 2026–February 2027 dates. Those dates align with entry in Fall 2027, but families should ask Admissions to confirm the school year in writing and preserve the reply with their application record.
The process has three separate gates: submit the lottery application, accept the offered seat, and complete OLR with age, immunization, school-record, custody, IEP or 504, and residency documents. Missing the OLR deadline may cause the seat to be rescinded.
Prospective tours run from September 18 through November 30, 2026, including two Saturday dates, and require registration. They are ambassador-led with an administrative introduction.
Treat a tour as school-controlled access; request a regular-day classroom view and a construction phasing update as well.
Choose the actual Pali week, not the coastal-school idea
Pali High’s strongest case is unusually tangible: a tuition-free public program with genuine academic, career, arts, athletic, and extracurricular range; a large Grade 9 doorway; citywide access; and enough distinct communities for many students to find a lane.
Its complications are equally tangible. The campus is open but rebuilding.
The charter term ends during an entering ninth grader’s first year. The paid bus can fill before school starts.
Long blocks, large sections, and department variation raise the premium on organization and help-seeking.
