This guide covers how admission works: which grades open real places, which tests each school accepts, what goes in the file, how interviews work, and how to weigh offers. For when each step happens, use the companion Los Angeles admissions timeline, which holds the month-by-month plan and every school’s Fall 2027 deadlines.
First build the right list
Kindergarten, Grade 6, and Grade 9 are not interchangeable.
| Entry grade | Verified structural examples | What the child may be asked to do | Parent-first read |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kindergarten | Current K tracks are published by Crossroads, Brentwood, Campbell Hall, Buckley, Oakwood, New Roads, Chadwick, and Sierra Canyon. | Formats vary: conversation, observation, readiness meeting, playdate, mini-day, or one-to-one activity. Use only the format the school actually publishes. | Age cutoffs differ. Crossroads publishes a birth-date range, Brentwood requires age five by July 1, 2027, Sierra Canyon by August 1; New Roads says it has no K age cutoff. |
| Grade 6 | Current Grade 6 paths appear at Crossroads, Brentwood, Archer, Campbell Hall, Buckley, Oakwood, New Roads, Milken, Chadwick, and Sierra Canyon. Harvard-Westlake, Marlborough, and Windward begin later. | Student questions, group activities, interview, evaluation, school records, or teacher forms may appear. Testing ranges from not reviewed to school-based work to standardized data. | “Grade 6 accepted” does not prove an expansion. Sierra Canyon calls Grade 6 a major entry point; Crossroads publishes a substantial new Grade 6 cohort. Elsewhere, capacity may be unknown. |
| Grade 9 | All 13 comparison schools publish a Grade 9 path. Harvard-Westlake, Crossroads, and Marlborough call Grade 9 a principal or larger entry; Windward screens Grades 8–11 before offering interviews. | More schools ask for current English and math recommendations, multi-year transcripts, student writing, interviews, or standardized evidence. | Ask whether Grade 9 is an expansion, a normal intake, or an availability-dependent opening. Do not translate “we accept applications” into a seat count. |
What schools say about their own intake
The most useful capacity signal is a school’s own language about main, natural, or largest entry grades and, rarely, a published estimate of new students. When a school publishes only a process, capacity remains unknown.
| School | Verified signal | What is not known |
|---|---|---|
| Harvard-Westlake | Grades 7 and 9 are main entry points; other grades are rare. Grades 11 and 12 are generally considered only for families relocating to Los Angeles. | No current public seat count by grade. |
| Crossroads | Grades 6, 7, and 9 are the largest secondary entry points. The school estimates about 30–40 new students in Grade 6, 30–35 in Grade 7, and 30–40 in Grade 9. | Those are typical cohort estimates, not guaranteed Fall 2027 seats or applicant odds. |
| Marlborough | Grades 7 and 9 are entry grades. The school describes spaces in Grades 8, 10, and 11 as extremely limited and does not admit seniors. | No current public seat count for Grades 7 or 9. |
| Windward | Grade 7 has a guaranteed-interview gate. Grades 8–11 are described as having very limited space and are screened before interviews are offered. | Grade 9 applications are possible; the page does not publish a Grade 9 seat count. |
| New Roads | The FAQ says the school typically enrolls 12–15 new Kindergarten students, 20 sixth- and seventh-grade students, and 25–30 ninth-grade students. | The phrasing does not resolve whether “20” is per grade or combined; “typically” also is not a Fall 2027 guarantee. |
| Sierra Canyon | The school calls Pre-K, K, 6, 7, and 9 natural entry points; other grades depend on space. It separately calls Pre-K and Grade 6 major Lower Campus entry points. | No current public seat count for those entry grades. |
| Brentwood | Kindergarten has its own current track. Grades 1–5 are admitted based on attrition; Grades 6–12 have a published current application process. | The public pages do not call Grades 6 or 9 expansions or publish seat counts. |
| Campbell Hall, Buckley, Oakwood, Chadwick | Each publishes a current process covering K, Grade 6, and Grade 9. Chadwick provides separate grade-band activities; the others distinguish elementary and secondary steps. | A current public seat count is unknown; a visible application path should not be described as a large intake. |
Editorial inference: A balanced list begins with grade structure, not perceived prestige. For every capacity-unknown option, add a school that explicitly describes the grade as a larger or major intake. That is risk management, not a prediction about any child. A 30-seat intake can still have many applicants, and a small opening can still be the right one for a particular child.
Dates and deadlines
The dates live on the timeline page.
LAIS sets a common decision and reply week in March, not a common application deadline, so every school’s fall gates differ. The Los Angeles timeline has the month-by-month plan and each school’s exact dates.
The school-by-school reality check
Thirteen schools, thirteen versions of “complete.”
The table is deliberately literal. “Not served” is different from “not an entry point.” “Testing unknown” is different from “test-free.” Policies are Fall 2027 unless a cell says otherwise; each school’s deadlines are on the timeline page.
| School | K / 6 / 9 reality | Current testing or assessment rule |
|---|---|---|
| Harvard-Westlake | K: not served · 6: not served · 9: principal entry | ISEE required; one result from the published Fall 2027 test window |
| Crossroads | K, 6, and 9: published intake tracks | Unknown for Fall 2027. The public testing FAQ still labels its rule “2025–26 admission cycle.” |
| Brentwood School | K: current track · 6 and 9: applications open | Grades 6–12: standardized testing not required; ISEE welcomed. No K standardized test stated. |
| Marlborough | K: not served · 6: not served · 9: principal entry | Character Skills Snapshot required. Current page does not state an ISEE or SSAT requirement. |
| Archer | K: not served · 6 and 9: applications open | ISEE and other standardized scores are not accepted. School assigns at-home writing and math exercises after interview. |
| Windward | K and 6: not served · 9: application possible; Grades 8–11 are screened for interview availability | ISEE required. Preferred testing timing and final January 19 score deadline are published by grade band. |
| Campbell Hall | K, 6, and 9: applications open | K has readiness assessment. The K–6 instructions state no standardized admission-test rule. Grades 7–12 require a recent standardized result, with multiple accepted types. |
| Buckley | K, 6, and 9: applications open | Unknown for domestic Fall 2027 applicants. The current public checklist does not resolve standardized testing and retains TBD or older-cycle fields. |
| Oakwood | K, 6, and 9: applications open | Most recent standardized results required. ISEE strongly recommended; alternate current testing plus a timed writing sample is the published route if ISEE is not used. |
| New Roads | K, 6, and 9: verified entry grades | ISEE and SSAT scores are not reviewed. |
| Milken | K: not served · 6 and 9: applications open | A recent result from current or previous school is required; accepted examples include ERB, CTP4, ISEE, CAASPP, and MAP. |
| Chadwick | K, 6, and 9: separate current application tracks | K and 6 have school-run evaluations; Grades 7–12 require the Character Skills Snapshot. A current ISEE/SSAT instruction is not stated on the public Fall 2027 page. |
| Sierra Canyon | K: current track · 6: major entry · 9: applications open | Grades 6–11 require standardized results from the current school or prior two years. ISEE/SSAT may be used, but are not the only route. |
“Applications open” means the official page provides a process for that grade. It does not mean a published seat count, expansion, or probability. Portal instructions can be more specific than public pages; save them with a timestamp.
Testing without folklore
There is no Los Angeles testing rule.
For the same Grade 9 applicant, Harvard-Westlake and Windward require the ISEE. Archer will not accept standardized scores. New Roads will not review ISEE or SSAT.
Campbell Hall requires some recent standardized result. Marlborough and Chadwick require the Character Skills Snapshot. Crossroads’ public testing FAQ has not been rolled forward to Fall 2027. These are different policies, not contradictions.
Where the ISEE is required, ERB lists at-home, at-school, office, and Prometric options, with availability varying by level and site. Campbell Hall’s Grades 7–12 rule accepts ISEE, SSAT, HSPT, CTP, or another standardized exam from the past calendar year.
| Applicant | Official level if a school requests it | Important distinction |
|---|---|---|
| Kindergarten | No ISEE or SSAT level applies. | School-run observations and readiness activities are not interchangeable. Do not rehearse undisclosed content. |
| Entering Grade 6 | ISEE Lower Level; SSAT Middle Level. | Some schools accept current-school tests instead, some run their own work, and some do not review standardized scores. |
| Entering Grade 9 | ISEE Upper Level; SSAT Upper Level. | “Standardized data required” does not automatically mean “take the ISEE.” Read the accepted-test list first. |
| Snapshot, entering Grades 6–12 | A separate online character-skills assessment. | EMA says it concerns preferences, attitudes, and beliefs across seven skills; it is not an academic test or a personality verdict. |
Editorial inference: The lowest-stress plan is to test only where the list requires it, choose one appropriate test date with a genuine retake buffer, and stop when the file is credible. Testing can inform a school; it should not colonize the family’s fall.
If accommodations are needed, begin the testing agency’s documentation process early. Separately ask each school how accommodations work in its own assessment. Test windows and score deadlines are on the timeline page.
The application file
Organize the adults so the child does not carry the project.
A preliminary application may be only the gate. The complete file can include student responses, parent responses, current and prior transcripts, administrator forms, English and math recommendations, a preschool or elementary teacher form, testing evidence, aid documents, and an interview or assessment.
LAIS hosts common role-based forms for administrators, English and math teachers, elementary teachers, preschool and Kindergarten recommenders, and transcripts. That does not mean every school wants every form or uses the same due date.Windward’s current Fall 2027 page links the LAIS Administrator, English, Math, and Transcript Release forms, which makes it a useful live source for the current common forms.
Portals: there is no single Los Angeles system
Ravenna is a real shared dashboard for profiles, applications, and enrollment tasks, but only for schools using it. Crossroads and Marlborough route applicants to Ravenna; other schools run their own systems.
| School | Published starting route | Easy-to-miss implication |
|---|---|---|
| Harvard-Westlake | Submit inquiry; allow up to two business days for processing and a PIN for the online application. | Do not wait until a deadline day to request access. |
| Crossroads / Marlborough | Ravenna | One login does not make the two schools’ requirements or dates interchangeable. |
| Brentwood / Archer / Buckley | Each school’s own admission or parent portal | Submission unlocks interviews, tours, or full checklists; earlier dates may protect appointment access. |
| Campbell Hall | ApplyWeb | The portal allows recommendation requests to be deferred; the family must return and send them at the right time. |
| Oakwood | Oakwood Connected; SAO also accepted | Confirm how an SAO submission maps to Oakwood’s school-specific checklist and appointments. |
| New Roads | Inquiry creates the MyRoads account; the application then appears under Admissions Progress. | The inquiry is an access step, not the application. |
| Milken | Applicant account, then myMilken access; the school says setup may take up to two business days. | Interview self-scheduling opens after processing. |
| Chadwick | Inquiry creates Veracross access for events, application, tracking, and documents. | Grade-specific appointments unlock after application. |
| Sierra Canyon | School application or SAO | Confirm that school-specific recommendations, assessments, and testing appear complete after either route. |
Parent writing: specific, proportionate, recognizable
Answer the question asked. Describe the child with one or two concrete examples, name a real need without turning it into a sales pitch, and explain the match using a program or practice the school actually publishes.
Do not assign a five-year-old a brand identity. Do not turn a ninth grader’s growth edge into a disguised superpower. The useful voice is the one a teacher would recognize.
Student writing: protect authorship
Schools that request student work are asking to meet the student. Adults may clarify the prompt, schedule time, and proofread at the level the school permits; they should not replace vocabulary, ideas, or tone.
Archer explicitly publishes parent-proctored, 30-minute at-home writing and math exercises.Crossroads publishes student questions and a small-group interview for Grades 6–12. New Roads asks Grades 6–12 for a student essay or questionnaire. Buckley’s second application part has two parent/guardian questions and two student prompts for Middle and Upper School, and Harvard-Westlake asks for a student questionnaire before the interview. None of these should be copied into one generic answer.
Recommendations: choose recency and context, not advocacy
Follow each school’s role and timing rules. Harvard-Westlake asks for current English, math, and administrator recommendations after November 1; Archer asks Grade 6 for one elementary teacher plus an administrator and older applicants for English, math, and administrator forms. New Roads asks secondary applicants for current math, English, and administrator forms. Campbell Hall requires one preschool form for K, different elementary combinations by grade, and three secondary recommendations.
District policy can change the file. Archer waives teacher and school recommendations for candidates in Beverly Hills Unified and Santa Monica–Malibu Unified because those districts do not provide them. Buckley publishes a separate Character Skills Snapshot route when a school or district does not provide recommendations.
Ask once, explain the school list and deadlines, use the school’s release date, and track portal receipt without demanding a copy. A teacher’s job is to write honestly, not to coordinate the family’s positioning.
Count components, not school logos
| Workstream | Owner | Definition of done |
|---|---|---|
| Portal and fees | One adult owner, one backup | Submitted, paid or waived, receipt saved |
| Parent responses | Parent(s)/guardian(s) | Specific, honest, school-aware, and consistent with actual family capacity |
| Student responses | Student, with logistical support only | In the child’s vocabulary and submitted on time |
| Appointments | Family calendar owner | Confirmed time, location, attendees, access plan |
| School materials | Current school; parent monitors | Each required form and record marked received |
| Testing or exercise | Student plus adult logistics | Correct route, date, accommodations, recipients |
| Financial aid | Financially responsible adults | Platform, school supplements, and later tax items complete |
| Decision file | Whole family | Contract, net cost, commute, support, and child fit compared |
Editorial inference: The workload rises with components, not linearly with schools. Five schools using different portals, tests, and visit formats may be heavier than seven schools sharing a portal and current-school forms. Set the list only after making that component map.
Interviews, visits, and child activities
Prepare for the format—not an invented answer key.
The published formats are genuinely different. Crossroads K uses a family conversation and child observation. Brentwood K publishes a parent interview and tour. Campbell Hall lists a K one-to-one readiness assessment and mini-day. Chadwick separates a K parent Zoom from a child evaluation. Sierra Canyon schedules a student assessment or interview for Pre-K–6.
At older grades, Crossroads publishes a small-group student interview. Archer interviews the student and parent or parents separately, then pairs the student with an ambassador tour.Buckley describes a 90-minute middle/upper group experience. It includes collaborative activity, improvisation, problem-solving, and a parent interview.
Some events help the family evaluate the school; others are part of the evaluation. New Roads says its admission events are optional and do not affect decisions. Archer’s optional day visit also does not affect decisions, although space is limited. Chadwick offers optional Grades 7–12 shadow days, and Harvard-Westlake gives in-person interview families a student-led Middle School tour.
These are verified formats. The exact questions, rubrics, and preferred answers are not public facts.
A humane preparation plan
- Make sure the child can say why they are considering a change in their own words.
- Practice a two-way conversation: listen, answer, and ask one genuine question.
- For group formats, discuss including others and recovering from an awkward moment—not performing leadership.
- Tell younger children what the day will look like without calling it a secret test.
- Afterward, ask what the child noticed. Do not conduct a forensic debrief in the car.
Cost and aid basics
Aid follows each school’s rules, not one regional form.
LAIS says member-school aid is need-based, that schools may require different documents and platforms, and that each family must follow the individual school’s procedure and deadline. Open the aid file alongside the application, not after an offer.
Tuition, aid platforms, renewals, and contracts are compared in the Los Angeles financial-aid and decisions guide. Aid deadlines sit in the timeline’s school-by-school table.
Offers, waitlists, and the reply week
An offer is permission to compare—not an instruction to rush.
LAIS member schools share one notification and reply week in March. Newly admitted revisits are discretionary, so ask about them promptly and respectfully. How to use that week day by day is on the timeline page.
| Compare | What to verify before accepting |
|---|---|
| Program | The child’s actual entry division, schedule, class placement, transition support, and access to the opportunities that mattered during application |
| Contract | Deposit, binding date, withdrawal liability, tuition-refund insurance, enrollment conditions, and required fees |
| Aid | Net family contribution, covered extras, renewal process, and any gap between the aid letter and complete cost |
| Daily life | Door-to-door morning and late-day commute, transportation reliability, homework load, care coverage, and sibling logistics |
| Support | A named service plan, frequency, provider, cost, and what happens if needs change |
| Child response | What felt energizing, concerning, or hard to picture—without asking the child to manage the adults’ status anxiety |
For a waitlist, respond in the requested channel, state continued interest truthfully, send only material updates the school permits, and secure another workable option by its deadline. Waitlist movement is an unknown; this guide will not invent odds or turn silence into a signal.
The strongest list is the one your family can actually live.
Los Angeles admissions rewards precision more than mythology. The common March dates create order at the end. Families still need to reconcile radically different entry grades, tests, exercises, aid deadlines, costs, and commutes.
The best shortlist is not the longest and not the most famous. It contains schools with real grade-level opportunity, a defensible daily trip, affordable total cost, and a support model the child can use.
Our confidence is high in the dated process facts cited here and in the conclusion that grade structure, geography, cost, and support must be treated as admissions variables.
Our confidence is intentionally limited where schools have not published a Fall 2027 answer. Unknown is not a flaw in the reporting; it is the prompt for the family’s next email.
