The regional framework
LAIS coordinates the finish, not the whole race.
Verified fact: LAIS describes itself as a consortium of more than 60 Los Angeles-area independent schools and says its members follow common decision-notification and response dates. Its searchable directory is the cleanest starting universe, but families should confirm that each particular school and grade follows the published calendar.↗↗
Verified fact: For Fall 2027 K–12 admission, LAIS recommends March 12 notification and March 19 replies. Schools may, at their discretion, grant revisit requests to newly admitted families; the association does not promise a common revisit program.↗
Verified fact: LAIS hosts common role-based forms for administrators, English and math teachers, elementary teachers, preschool/Kindergarten recommenders, and transcripts. That does not mean every school wants every form or uses the same due date.↗
Verified fact: LAIS says member-school aid is need-based, that schools may require different documents and platforms, and that each family must follow the individual school’s procedure and deadline.↗
There is no universal application opening, application deadline, age cutoff, interview format, testing requirement, aid platform, late-application right, or enrollment contract. Those remain school-specific.
Capacity without mythology
“We take applications” is not the same as “this grade grows.”
The most useful capacity signal is a school’s own language about main, natural, or largest entry grades—and, rarely, a published estimate of new students. When a school publishes only a process, capacity remains unknown.
| School | Verified signal | What is not known |
|---|---|---|
| Harvard-Westlake | Grades 7 and 9 are main entry points; other grades are rare. Grades 11 and 12 are generally considered only for families relocating to Los Angeles.↗ | No current public seat count by grade. |
| Crossroads | Grades 6, 7, and 9 are the largest secondary entry points. The school estimates about 30–40 new students in Grade 6, 30–35 in Grade 7, and 30–40 in Grade 9.↗ | Those are typical cohort estimates, not guaranteed Fall 2027 seats or applicant odds. |
| Marlborough | Grades 7 and 9 are entry grades. The school describes spaces in Grades 8, 10, and 11 as extremely limited and does not admit seniors.↗ | No current public seat count for Grades 7 or 9. |
| Windward | Grade 7 has a guaranteed-interview gate. Grades 8–11 are described as having very limited space and are screened before interviews are offered.↗ | Grade 9 applications are possible; the page does not publish a Grade 9 seat count. |
| New Roads | The FAQ says the school typically enrolls 12–15 new Kindergarten students, 20 sixth- and seventh-grade students, and 25–30 ninth-grade students.↗ | The phrasing does not resolve whether “20” is per grade or combined; “typically” also is not a Fall 2027 guarantee. |
| Sierra Canyon | The school calls Pre-K, K, 6, 7, and 9 natural entry points; other grades depend on space. It separately calls Pre-K and Grade 6 major Lower Campus entry points.↗ | No current public seat count for those entry grades. |
| Brentwood | Kindergarten has its own current track. Grades 1–5 are admitted based on attrition; Grades 6–12 have a published current application process.↗↗ | The public pages do not call Grades 6 or 9 expansions or publish seat counts. |
| Campbell Hall, Buckley, Oakwood, Chadwick | Each publishes a current process covering K, Grade 6, and Grade 9. Chadwick provides separate grade-band activities; the others distinguish elementary and secondary steps.↗↗↗↗ | A current public seat count is unknown; a visible application path should not be described as a large intake. |
Editorial inference: A resilient list pairs capacity-explicit grades with capacity-unknown schools that fit the child. This is portfolio design, not handicapping. A 30-seat intake can still have many applicants; a small opening can still be the right one for a particular child.
The 2027–28 master calendar
Build backward from the first gate, not the final deadline.
| Window | Verified season activity | Parent-first move |
|---|---|---|
| March–May 2026 | LAIS maintains a regional member directory; individual schools begin publishing or previewing the coming process at different times.↗ | Define the entry grade, maximum weekday commute, support needs, identity or program must-haves, and realistic full-cost ceiling. Drive likely routes at school-hour speed. |
| June–July | Oakwood lists a July 1 application opening. Other schools open later; an inquiry may be required before the portal is visible.↗ | Gather legal names, addresses for both households, prior school names, report cards, testing already on file, and aid documents. Do not ask teachers for recommendations in summer unless a school tells you to. |
| August | Sierra Canyon opens August 1, Crossroads August 3, New Roads August 10, and Campbell Hall August 17. Marlborough’s and other current applications are also live by early September.↗↗↗↗ | Open every intended portal, record the platform and login owner, and copy every checklist item into one family tracker. Book only events that answer a real fit question. |
| September–October | Interviews and tours begin at several schools. Connected-family deadlines start September 30 at Campbell Hall and run through October at Oakwood, Archer, Sierra Canyon, and Milken.↗↗↗ | Draft parent responses, let older students write in their own voice, choose a test route only after checking every school, and start aid applications as soon as they open. |
| November 1–20 | Many current-school forms become available after November 1. Interview-protection dates cluster here: Buckley November 9, Archer and Windward November 12, Harvard-Westlake November 13, Campbell Hall November 16, and Brentwood and Oakwood November 20.↗↗↗↗ | Treat a guaranteed-interview or priority date as the working deadline. Send one accurate recommender list, then monitor receipt without coaching the recommendation. |
| December 8–18 | Final application deadlines cluster: Buckley K–5 December 8; Archer December 10; Milken December 11; New Roads December 14; Windward and Sierra Canyon December 15; Crossroads, Campbell Hall, and Buckley Grades 6–12 December 16; Oakwood December 18. | Finish child-authored work before winter break. Download or screenshot each submitted application and confirm that the portal says submitted, not merely started. |
| January 1–20, 2027 | Buckley’s aid priority date is January 1; Chadwick’s application is due January 4; many records and recommendations are due January 8; Harvard-Westlake and Milken files close January 15; Windward testing closes January 19; Campbell Hall new-family aid closes January 20.↗↗↗ | Audit every checklist by component. A requested transcript is not a received transcript. Keep current teachers focused on the child’s school year, not on portal anxiety. |
| Late January–February | Student assessments and interviews continue. Sierra Canyon accepts required testing evidence through February 1; Brentwood’s current aid process requires later W-2/1099 documents by February 5 and a complete aid file by February 12.↗↗ | Close genuine gaps. Do not manufacture extra contact, recommendations, or achievements after the file is complete. |
| March 12–19 | LAIS notification and reply week. | Compare the full contract, aid award, deposit, commute, calendar, support, and child response. Ask factual questions quickly; the common reply window is one week. |
| Late March–August | Enrollment, health, records, transportation, placement, tuition-plan, orientation, and summer-work steps are school-specific. | Close the old school relationship graciously, calendar all new-family obligations, and make the commute plan real before the first day. |
Editorial opinion: A family should aim to be one week early for any gate that controls appointments and three school days early for an online final deadline. That margin is for illness, login trouble, and ordinary family life—not strategic signaling.
Inquiry and application systems
There is no single Los Angeles portal.
Ravenna is a real shared dashboard—it can manage profiles, applications, schools, and enrollment tasks—but only for schools using it. Crossroads and Marlborough route applicants to Ravenna.↗↗↗
| School | Published starting route | Easy-to-miss implication |
|---|---|---|
| Harvard-Westlake | Submit inquiry; allow up to two business days for processing and a PIN for the online application.↗ | Do not wait until a deadline day to request access. |
| Crossroads / Marlborough | Ravenna | One login does not make the two schools’ requirements or dates interchangeable. |
| Brentwood / Archer / Buckley | Each school’s own admission or parent portal | Submission unlocks interviews, tours, or full checklists; earlier dates may protect appointment access. |
| Campbell Hall | ApplyWeb | The portal allows recommendation requests to be deferred; the family must return and send them at the right time.↗ |
| Oakwood | Oakwood Connected; SAO also accepted | Confirm how an SAO submission maps to Oakwood’s school-specific checklist and appointments.↗ |
| New Roads | Inquiry creates the MyRoads account; the application then appears under Admissions Progress.↗ | The inquiry is an access step, not the application. |
| Milken | Applicant account, then myMilken access; the school says setup may take up to two business days.↗ | Interview self-scheduling opens after processing. |
| Chadwick | Inquiry creates Veracross access for events, application, tracking, and documents.↗ | Grade-specific appointments unlock after application. |
| Sierra Canyon | School application or SAO | Confirm that school-specific recommendations, assessments, and testing appear complete after either route.↗ |
Editorial opinion: Use a password manager and one adult-owned tracker with columns for inquiry, application, interview, student work, school forms, testing, aid, and decision. Portals are systems of record, not project managers for the whole family.
Testing without folklore
The school list chooses the test plan—not the other way around.
ERB identifies ISEE Lower Level for applicants to Grades 5–6, Middle Level for Grades 7–8, and Upper Level for Grades 9–12. Its official page lists at-home, at-school, office, and Prometric options, with availability varying by level and site. The SSAT selects its level from the student’s registered current grade.↗↗
The Character Skills Snapshot is different: its publisher calls it a measure of student preferences, attitudes, and beliefs across seven skills for students entering Grades 6–12. It is not an ISEE percentile and has no right or wrong answers.↗
| School | Verified Fall 2027 rule | Planning consequence |
|---|---|---|
| Harvard-Westlake | ISEE required; submit one administration taken August 1, 2026 through January 15, 2027.↗ | Book within the school’s window and name one result. |
| Windward | ISEE required; final testing deadline January 19, with earlier preferred timing for Grades 8–11.↗ | Do not confuse the preferred date with the final date. |
| Archer | ISEE and other standardized scores are not accepted. Archer assigns 30-minute at-home writing and math exercises after the interview, with a parent/guardian proctor.↗ | Protect authentic work; do not coach the exercise. |
| Brentwood Grades 6–12 | Standardized testing is not required; ISEE scores are welcomed.↗ | Optional means the file can be complete without it. |
| New Roads | The school says it does not review ISEE, SSAT, or other test scores in admission.↗ | Do not send an unrequested score. |
| Milken | A recent current- or prior-school-year standardized result is required; examples include ERB, CTP4, ISEE, CAASPP, and MAP. New-family materials and scores are due January 15.↗ | Check what the current school already has before retesting. |
| Oakwood | Recent standardized results are required. ISEE is strongly recommended; families forgoing it may submit other current testing paired with Oakwood’s timed writing assessment.↗ | Confirm the alternative route in the checklist. |
| Sierra Canyon Grades 6–11 | Current-school or prior-two-year standardized results are required. ISEE or SSAT is another route; evidence is due February 1.↗ | School-administered results may satisfy the requirement. |
| Campbell Hall | K uses a readiness evaluation. Grades 7–12 require a recent standardized result; the page accepts ISEE, SSAT, HSPT, CTP, or another standardized exam from the past calendar year.↗ | Grade 6 is in the elementary process; read the right track. |
| Marlborough / Chadwick | Marlborough requires the Snapshot. Chadwick requires it for Grades 7–12 and runs school evaluations for K and 6.↗↗ | The public current pages do not state a current domestic ISEE/SSAT rule; treat that as unknown, not test-free. |
| Crossroads | Unknown for Fall 2027. The public FAQ still labels its testing language “2025–26 admission cycle.”↗ | Ask before registering or sending scores. |
Editorial opinion: Once the list is stable, choose the least burdensome route that satisfies every required school. Familiarization is reasonable. Turning the fall into a second curriculum is not. For access arrangements, contact the test provider and schools early; do not assume that school accommodations automatically transfer to an admission test.
Records and recommendations
The quiet dependency is your current school’s calendar.
LAIS offers shared recommendation and transcript forms, but current schools deploy them differently. Harvard-Westlake requests current English, math, and administrator recommendations after November 1. Archer uses an elementary teacher plus administrator for Grade 6, and English, math, and administrator forms for Grade 7 and above. Campbell Hall requires one preschool form for K, different elementary combinations by grade, and three secondary recommendations.↗↗↗↗
Verified fact: District policy can change the file. Archer waives teacher and school recommendations for candidates in Beverly Hills Unified and Santa Monica–Malibu Unified because those districts do not provide them. Buckley publishes a separate Character Skills Snapshot route when a school or district does not provide recommendations.↗↗
| Step | Do this | Avoid this |
|---|---|---|
| Before November | Ask the current school for its placement policy, lead time, blackout dates, and whether it sends one common form or portal-specific forms. | Sending forms before schools permit current-year work. |
| Final list | Give the school one accurate destination list with grade, portal, role, and due date. | Adding schools one by one without alerting the registrar. |
| Delegation | Use the teacher or administrator the application specifies; waive access where required. | Choosing the warmest adult when the form requests current math. |
| Monitoring | Check portal status weekly and send one respectful reminder through the current school’s preferred channel. | Repeatedly asking teachers whether the letter is “strong.” |
| Records | Distinguish release authorization, transcript request, report card, prior years, testing on file, and midyear update. | Assuming “transcript requested” means every item arrived. |
Editorial opinion: The best recommender is the required current educator who knows the child’s real classroom work. A parent’s job is to provide time and correct routing—not themes, adjectives, or a script.
Interviews, tours, and student visits
Every event has a different job.
Some events help the family evaluate the school; others are required parts of evaluation. New Roads explicitly says its admission events are optional and do not affect decisions. Archer’s optional day visit also does not affect decisions, although space is limited.↗↗
| Format | Current examples | Prepare for the format, not a performance |
|---|---|---|
| Family conversation | Brentwood invites parent(s)/guardian(s) and student for the Grades 6–12 family interview; its K interview and tour are for parent(s)/guardian(s). Campbell Hall elementary families attend together; secondary students also have one-to-one time.↗↗ | Adults align on facts and questions. The child practices saying what they actually enjoy, need, and wonder. |
| Separate conversations | Archer’s hour includes a student-led tour and separate student and parent/guardian conversations.↗ | Do not make identical wording the goal. Consistent family reality matters more than rehearsed matching answers. |
| Small-group work | Crossroads uses small-group interviews; Buckley’s secondary applicants complete collaborative, improvisational, and problem-solving activities.↗↗ | Encourage listening, participation, and kindness—not taking control of the group. |
| Kindergarten activity | Campbell Hall uses a one-to-one readiness evaluation and a group mini-day. Chadwick schedules a student evaluation. Sierra Canyon requires developmental/academic readiness assessment and a parent interview.↗↗ | Give the child sleep, food, simple logistics, and permission not to know every answer. |
| Tour or shadow | Chadwick offers optional Grades 7–12 shadow days alongside interviews. Archer offers optional full school-day visits. Harvard-Westlake gives in-person interview families a student-led Middle School tour.↗↗ | Ask what the visit can reveal about an ordinary day, not how to “show interest.” |
Editorial opinion: Tour less, observe better. Ask where a new student goes when lost, what homework looks like on a Wednesday, how support begins, when buses leave after activities, and what adults notice before a child asks for help.
The application workload
Count components, not school logos.
The visible form is only one workstream. Buckley’s second application part includes two parent/guardian questions and two student prompts for Middle and Upper School applicants. New Roads requires a student essay and questionnaire in Grades 6–12. Harvard-Westlake asks for a student questionnaire before interview. Crossroads includes student questions and a small-group interview. None of those pieces should be copied into one generic answer.↗↗↗↗
| Workstream | Owner | Definition of done |
|---|---|---|
| Portal and fees | One adult owner, one backup | Submitted, paid or waived, receipt saved |
| Parent responses | Parent(s)/guardian(s) | Specific, honest, school-aware, and consistent with actual family capacity |
| Student responses | Student, with logistical support only | In the child’s vocabulary and submitted on time |
| Appointments | Family calendar owner | Confirmed time, location, attendees, access plan |
| School materials | Current school; parent monitors | Each required form and record marked received |
| Testing or exercise | Student plus adult logistics | Correct route, date, accommodations, recipients |
| Financial aid | Financially responsible adults | Platform, school supplements, and later tax items complete |
| Decision file | Whole family | Contract, net cost, commute, support, and child fit compared |
Editorial inference: The workload rises with components, not linearly with schools. Five schools using different portals, tests, and visit formats may be heavier than seven schools sharing a portal and current-school forms. Set the list only after making that component map.
Editorial opinion: Protect two weekly work blocks for adults and one short block for an older student. Never turn a Sunday into an all-day admissions shift. Fatigue makes families generic, irritable, and less able to notice fit.
Decision week and enrollment
A seven-day reply window rewards preparation, not panic.
Verified fact: LAIS’s Fall 2027 window runs from Friday, March 12 after 5 p.m. to Friday, March 19 at noon. Schools may allow admitted-family revisits at their discretion.↗
Before March, build a decision sheet with the same rows for every school: signed-contract deadline, nonrefundable deposit, net tuition, what aid covers, transportation, start and end times, aftercare, athletics or arts return time, learning support, calendar conflicts, and the child’s own observations. Leave the “admitted?” column blank until decisions arrive.
- Read the full enrollment agreement and aid award before clicking accept. Record refund and withdrawal language.
- Ask only unresolved factual questions. If a revisit is needed, request it immediately and understand that it is discretionary.
- Re-run the commute at the actual morning and afternoon times, including the late bus or activity pickup.
- Let the child speak without making them responsible for the family budget or adult status anxiety.
- Accept one place by its deadline, release others promptly, and retain confirmations.
After enrollment, the project changes. Request final records, complete health and emergency forms, choose the tuition plan, confirm transportation, ask about placement or summer work, calendar new-family events, and close the current school relationship with care.
The best Los Angeles calendar is also a family boundary.
The durable plan is simple: choose the right grade, choose a commutable geography, distinguish real entry evidence from an open application, and work backward from the first appointment gate. Then let each school’s current page—not neighborhood lore—set testing, forms, and interviews.
Our strongest opinion is that admissions should remain an adult logistics project surrounding a child, not a child identity project run by adults. Older students should own their voice. Younger children should meet kind adults and do ordinary age-appropriate things. No result is a verdict on a child’s promise.
We are highly confident in the common March calendar and the school-specific facts cited here as of September 2, 2026. We are not confident in any claim about unwritten preferences, future seat counts, or personal odds—and we do not make those claims.
