The school day
Sixth grade, before anyone specializes
Every sixth grader takes the same core courses: English 6: Journey of Self, ancient-world history through the Young Historians course, Mathematical Ways of Thinking, Integrated Science, Fitness & Wellness, and Human Development. Language Foundations rotates through Chinese, French, Spanish, and media literacy before sustained language study begins in Grade 7.
Arts rotates through theatre, strings, visual arts, and vocal music. The structure suits an eleven-year-old still discovering interests.
Archer is a girls’ day school for Grades 6 through 12 in Brentwood, with no boarding. CAIS counts 511 students; Archer’s own overview rounds the community to 500.
Any applicant who identifies as a girl may apply. Once admitted, she remains diploma-eligible if her sexual identity or another protected status later changes, provided she stays in good academic standing, follows conduct rules, and meets graduation requirements.
Life beyond class is participatory: students lead more than 30 interest and affinity groups, weekly Community Connections are student-run assemblies followed by advisory discussion, and Archer reports 11 sports and 22 Middle and Upper School teams.
Dance Performance Company is auditioned, advanced arts courses have prerequisites, and Archer does not say every team is no-cut, so ask about the exact sport, grade, and roster size.
Upper school
After sixth grade, the schedule is hers to build
Upper School students carry at least five courses each semester. Graduation requires four years of English and three years each of history, mathematics, science, and world language.
It also requires two years of Fitness & Wellness, four years of Human Development, and four year-long elective equivalents, including at least one visual or performing art. Student choices drive schedules, though Archer states that every listed course depends on sufficient enrollment and faculty availability.
A typical ninth-grade path includes English 9, civic-engagement history, integrated mathematics at the appropriate level, Biology I, world language, Fitness & Wellness, Human Development, and electives.
Math is integrated rather than split into the traditional Algebra–Geometry–Algebra II sequence; Archer says the pathway lets every student reach calculus or a senior capstone such as Financial Algebra or Data Science. That is pathway access, not the same destination or pace for everyone.
Archer’s highest-level courses are called Advanced Study rather than AP, and access is not automatic: English 11 Advanced Study and senior English and history options require a self-reflection survey, an Advanced Study agreement, and department recommendation, while math and science courses carry their own prerequisites.
For deeper exploration, the RISE pathway offers independent science and engineering research, while partnerships with One Schoolhouse provide small collaborative online classes. College guidance is integrated with Human Development and staffed by a director, associate director, and college-guidance associate, citing an 8–9 application average and a five-class matriculation list.
College reporting provides a clear 58-student Class of 2026 denominator.
Applying
The date that secures the interview
Sibling applications are due October 8, 2026. For all other applicants, submit the application and fee by November 12 to guarantee an interview.
Applications submitted November 13 through the final December 10 deadline receive interviews only if space remains. Flexible Tuition is also due December 10.
Recommendations and complete official records for 2024–25, 2025–26, and the current 2026–27 year are due January 8, 2027. Decisions arrive March 12 at 5 p.m.
The hour-long weekday-morning appointment includes a student-led tour, followed by separate conversations for the applicant and a parent or guardian with an admissions officer. Afterward, every applicant receives a sealed packet with one writing prompt and one mathematics worksheet, completed at home under parent or guardian proctoring with a 30-minute limit.
Archer says no advance preparation is necessary. It will not accept ISEE or other standardized-test scores, which removes the testing game but makes the school’s own two exercises and the academic record more consequential.
Recommendation rules differ: Grade 6 needs the current elementary teacher and an administrator; Grade 9 uses the Grades 7–12 process requiring current English, mathematics, and administrator forms, plus three academic years of records. Requests should go after November 1 and arrive by January 8.
For applicants enrolled in Beverly Hills Unified or Santa Monica–Malibu Unified schools, Archer waives teacher and school recommendations because those districts do not provide them for independent-school applicants.
Once the application is received, she may request an optional day visit from roughly 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on a limited, first-come basis, observing three classes with a current student and having lunch. Archer notes that visiting does not affect admission.
Fall admissions events include parent campus previews, Discover Archer mini-classes, neighborhood coffees in Beverly Hills, Sherman Oaks, View Park, and Santa Monica, and a January 2027 Early Look for younger families. Archer also reserves the right to evaluate and decide an application even if all components have not been received.
Grade 6 is Archer’s natural entry because the school starts there, and every sixth grader arrives alongside an entire new cohort. A ninth grader enters a community whose relationships, rituals, language sequence, advising habits, and course placements have been forming for three years.
Sibling admission is explicitly not guaranteed, and Archer recommends applying elsewhere as well.
Cost
The first-year bill, added up
For 2026–27, the mandatory package is $54,800 in tuition, $1,700 for the laptop and technology, and $3,100 for transportation, totaling $59,600. A new student then pays a one-time $2,000 fee.
Uniforms run an estimated $250–$600 and textbooks $125–$300. On those published numbers alone, a first year is $61,975–$62,500 before anything not listed.
The package includes the transportation network, an Apple laptop and educational software, and expedition travel through the outdoor-education program; the catalogs identify compulsory Arrow Week for Grades 10 and 12.
The public cost page does not price lunch, athletic equipment, instruments, optional travel, or tuition insurance, and the Archer Fund FAQ says families receive suggested gift levels. The 2027–28 price is not yet public.
Aid
Flexible Tuition, and the full-pay rule
If a family qualifies for Flexible Tuition but receives no award, enrolls full-pay for year one, and can secure the money, Archer expects full tuition and fees in later years. Applying for aid after enrolling is allowed, but the school warns that the likelihood is significantly reduced.
More than 20% of students received Flexible Tuition in 2026–27, backed by more than $20 million awarded over the prior five years. Awards cover roughly 10%–90% of tuition.
Admissions and financial review are separate, so an admission offer does not guarantee an award. Some admitted families who qualify are placed in a Flexible Tuition wait-pool.
Apply through Clarity by December 10, 2026, with the requested 2025 tax returns, W-2s, 1099s, schedules, and K-1s. For 2026 taxes due April 15, 2027, Archer’s main page tells families to submit to FAST even though the current platform is Clarity.
Both parents and all financially responsible adults generally must disclose finances, regardless of a private legal agreement.
For a nonworking parent with a child older than six, Archer currently imputes full-time minimum-wage income of $38,314 annually. Aid applies at the same percentage to mandatory fees, primary Arrow Week expenses, a uniform voucher, one fitness-uniform set, required textbooks, and a planner.
Families reapply annually; with similar circumstances, Archer says the expected contribution usually remains steady plus the annual tuition percentage increase.
Support
Help you can see, and what to ask beyond it
Learning Services coordinates structured support for diagnosed learning differences, executive-function coaching, and peer tutoring. PowerHour pairs trained Upper School mentors with students in Grades 6 through 12, Monday through Thursday after school, for organization, study strategy, test preparation, and homework.
Middle schoolers can use Study With Me during FLX for one-to-one or small-group help from a learning specialist, while Math Café and Upper School Math Lab offer drop-in help with math teachers.
The staff directory lists two learning specialists, two school counselors, and one school nurse, plus a grade-level Dean of Culture, Community, and Belonging for every grade.
Human Development is required every year. Grade 9 covers stress, mindfulness, drug education, sexuality, consent, intimacy, gender identity, body image, healthy and unhealthy relationships, and decision-making.
Grade 10 adds conflict resolution and sexual-assault awareness, while later years address anxiety, financial literacy, college transition, party and campus safety, relationships, and self-care. The wellness program also spans mental health, media use, nutrition, social connection, mindfulness, fitness, and self-defense.
The commute
The bus is how this campus is allowed to run
Archer sits at 11725 Sunset Boulevard near Barrington Avenue, west of the 405 in Brentwood. Arriving and departing are tightly managed: the school reports ten morning and early-afternoon routes and six late-afternoon express routes for activities.
The 2026–27 mandatory package includes a $3,100 transportation charge whether or not the network is an ideal fit.
The bus is how this campus is legally allowed to run. A 2015 conditional-use permit requires 76% of students to arrive by bus daily.
Students without a transit, bicycle, or walking permit must carpool with at least three students; single drivers are not allowed. Event traffic and parking are capped, and guests may need advance parking reservations.
Archer’s strongest argument is the coherence of the experience
Archer has built something more specific than a generic college-preparatory school. Grade 6 sampling, required Human Development, integrated mathematics, Advanced Study, research, film, student-led assemblies, deep arts, athletics, outdoor education, traditions, and a bus-centered campus all point in the same direction.
The girls-school model is visible in the architecture of the program, not only in marketing copy.
Our caution is equally specific. Public evidence does not show the Grade 9 seat count, nightly workload, Advanced Study access rates, support capacity, or late-bus usefulness.
At more than $61,000 for the published first-year floor, asking for that documentation is reasonable.
Placement, a four-year map and the Archer bus route
Archer is a seven-year girls' school, so entry grade, placement and the morning route shape the experience more than the brochure does.
Placement, aid and the commute
- In this grade, how are students with prior language or music study placed, and what can continue during the school day rather than only after school?
- If she is applying for Grade 9, may we see a written four-year map before enrollment, and how are newcomers grouped and advised?
- If we qualify for Flexible Tuition, receive no award, and enroll full-pay, what will Archer expect in later years?
- What is the 2026–27 bus route from our address on a regular morning and on a rehearsal or game night, and do the late express routes cover the end of her activity?
- If she has an evaluation, what does learning support look like in this grade, and what would we still arrange outside school?
