About 830 students on 1,800 acres beside Lake Maxinkuckee in northern Indiana. One in five students is international, and there is no day option.
Applications are due January 15, 2027, with decisions on March 1. Culver publishes no testing menu for grade 12 or a postgraduate year.
38% of families receive need-based aid, and the average award is about $36,000. Uniforms, airport buses, and optional trips are extra. The Fall 2027 rate is not yet published.
Dorm rooms are phone-free-for-all zones; classrooms and the dining hall at breakfast and lunch are zipped-bag zones.
What Culver is
One lake, two academies, no day students
Culver is two schools sharing a campus. Culver Military Academy (CMA) opened in 1894 and still runs boys through a cadet system with ranks, formations, and Sunday parades.
Culver Girls Academy (CGA) arrived in 1971 and runs girls through a prefect system modeled on democratic government. Classes, teams, and most activities are coed; where your child sleeps, what they wear, and who holds authority over them in the evening are not.
Everybody boards. Culver's admissions page counts about 830 students (the homepage says 835), a 6:1 student-teacher ratio, average classes of 14, and 100% of students living on campus.
The At a Glance page puts the split at 43% girls and 57% boys, with 20% of students coming from outside the United States.
The decision to settle first is appetite for structure. A teenager who likes a checklist, a uniform, and a clear ladder to climb tends to find Culver purposeful.
A teenager who needs privacy, loose weekends, or a leadership model that is not sorted by gender will feel the design pressing on them from breakfast to lights-out, seven days a week.
Two leadership tracks
Boys get a chain of command; girls get a government
CMA says plainly that it is not preparing boys for military careers. The point is to teach responsibility and followership before leadership.
Every new boy, whatever grade he enters, starts in the New Cadet System, a phased process that can run until spring and places him under the supervision of older cadets. Basic Formation usually lasts about eight weeks, and advancement runs through branch boards: uniform inspections, recited Culver knowledge, and sign-off from senior unit leaders.
The handbook calls abusing the New Cadet System, in letter or spirit, a major offense that leads to dismissal. That is a real boundary, but paper does not supervise a barracks.
On a visit, ask how adults watch a system that teenagers partly run: who is on the floor in the evening, how a new cadet reports a problem with an older one, and what happened the last time someone did.
CGA works differently. New girls live under dorm prefects, take required leadership coursework, and earn their Crest.
The year is split into three rotations of about three months, and most positions turn over each rotation so more girls get a turn. Juniors and seniors run for election or apply for appointment after training and interviews; the Dean of Girls makes the final appointments.
Girls cannot opt out of the leadership program, though they can postpone a formal position for one rotation.
Culver's public documents describe boys and girls and nothing in between. If your child is transgender, nonbinary, or questioning, ask admissions directly how housing, uniforms, and leadership placement would work, and get the answer in writing.
Dorm life
Lockable doors, open to inspection
Students live in ten single-gender dorms and barracks. The 2026–27 handbook names the counselor as a student's first point of contact for the inevitable problems of boarding life.
A 2025 school feature on CMA staffing describes resident directors as the primary adults on duty nights and weekends, with counselors handling daytime logistics, parent calls, and academic check-ins; the counselor profiled there oversees 51 cadets.
Privacy is limited by design. Rooms lock, but on-duty staff may enter at any time, announced or not.
CGA hall prefects check rooms between 7:45 and 7:55 each morning. CMA runs daily personal inspections led by cadet leaders and more formal general inspections by military mentors and counselors, down to made beds and shined shoes.
Students may not enter dorms or barracks of the opposite sex without staff permission.
A child who finds routine steadying may thrive on this. A child with a trauma history, a disability that affects organization, or a strong need for privacy should have written accommodations agreed before enrollment, not after the first failed inspection.
The week
Seven to ten-fifteen, and what the weekend is for
The 2026–27 handbook's weekly schedule settles what earlier Culver pages disagreed about. Wake-up is 7:00 a.m., with personal inspection and breakfast from 7:15 to 8:15 (boys form up first).
Classes run 8:30 a.m. to 3:45 p.m., co-curriculars 3:45 to 6:00, dinner and an open period until 7:30, then CQ (Call to Quarters, the required study block) from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. Quiet hours start at 7:00 and lights-out is 10:15.
An older online academic-handbook page still describes an 8:00-to-11:00 study window; the July 2026 PDF is the newer document.
There are no Saturday classes. Weekends bring sleep, the walk into the town of Culver, campus events, games, and, for boys, parades on scheduled Sundays.
Students get four flexible weekend leaves a year, and new students get none in their first six weeks. Cadets may miss only one parade per parade season, which quietly shapes when a boy can go home.
Attendance is counted in percentages now. Missing more than 20% of a course in a grading period is excessive whatever the reason, including illness and school trips, and the Dean of CGA and the Commandant of Cadets will not approve an absence once a student is past that line or on a published blackout date.
Past 30% of a course or term, no credit is awarded. Because a term in the block schedule is short, a bad week of flu costs more here than at a traditional school.
Phones
Red, yellow, and green zones
The 2026–27 handbook sorts campus into phone zones. Dorm rooms are green, where students use phones as they like within the responsible-use policy.
Sidewalks, the student center, the fitness center, and the dining hall at dinner are yellow: quick checks and payments, no walking while scrolling. Academic buildings during the school day, the dining hall at breakfast and lunch, and the auditorium are red, meaning the phone lives behind a zipper in a bag, not in a pocket.
Chapel allows no phones at all.
Phones are collected no later than 10:00 p.m. every evening and locked in the counselor's office, then returned between 7:00 and 8:00 a.m. Smartwatches follow the zone rules, personal laptops and tablets stay out of classrooms, and smart glasses are banned.
The parent addendum says students can take calls from 7:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and until 11:00 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays, and asks parents to keep calls during study hours short.
One caution: Culver's older Living Units web page still says the phone policy will be reviewed during 2022–23 and describes turn-in at lights-out. The July 2026 PDF is newer, but the school has not said which document controls.
Ask, and ask whether the zone rules will hold for Fall 2027.
Academics
Three or four courses at a time
Culver runs an intensive block schedule: students take three or four courses per term rather than six or seven all year. The school lists about 190 courses (its pages say 194 and 185 in different places), including 24 Advanced Placement and 20 honors courses.
Culver's own advising page warns that block students may finish with fewer APs than peers elsewhere, so judge rigor by the courses, not the count. Humanities classes run as Harkness-style discussions around a table.
Each student keeps one advisor from matriculation to graduation, and that advisor handles both course selection and college planning. New 9th and 10th graders are automatically enrolled in a supervised study hall for Term 1.
Students who need more structure in the evening are referred to Homework Café in the library from 7:30 to 9:25 during CQ, usually for at least one reporting period.
Formal accommodations run through a Learning Support Plan, and the handbook is direct about the bar: a diagnosis alone does not qualify. A current evaluation from a qualified professional must show a clear functional impact, the need must exceed what ordinary classroom practice can handle, and Culver's own staffing must be equipped to deliver it.
If your child has a plan now, send it with the application and ask what would and would not carry over.
Health and counseling
A 24-hour clinic with clear limits
The Health Center keeps a registered nurse on duty around the clock whenever students are on campus, with a board-certified doctor overseeing it and a nurse practitioner as the in-house provider. It works as an urgent-care clinic with overnight beds, and almost every visit, including an overnight stay, is covered by tuition.
Parents pay for prescriptions, some equipment, and any care off campus. Every student must carry comprehensive insurance; international students must enroll in Culver's plan.
Emotional Support Services, based in the Health Center, offers behavior-based intervention, group therapy, follow-up care, and consultation, and typically schedules a requested appointment within seven school days. It does not provide addiction assessment or therapy, high-risk eating-disorder therapy, psychiatric medication assessment, psychoeducational testing, or long-term therapy.
The team will give families a list of local providers. If your child is in ongoing therapy now, plan for an off-campus clinician and the transport to reach one in rural Indiana.
Two policies deserve a careful read. Health and counseling staff may share information with the Dean of CGA or the Commandant, and with anyone those deans deem appropriate; parents are told when a student sees a provider, but not when a student simply sees the duty nurse.
And an extended absence for physical or mental health can become a medical leave (learning continues in a modified way) or a medical withdrawal; extending a leave can turn into a withdrawal at the deans' discretion, and return depends on a Health Center review of treatment and aftercare.
Afternoons
Sport, stage, and stable
Most afternoons are spoken for. The 2026–27 handbook requires 9th and 10th graders, and any new 11th grader, to take part in co-curriculars in two of the three seasons; for new students one of those must be fall.
An activity counts if it meets at least three times a week with an adult coach or sponsor, and a full off-season strength or skills program counts too. Culver reports 82% athletic participation across roughly 65 teams, and dance or theater can satisfy the requirement.
The horses are the most distinctive part. The Vaughn Equestrian Center stables 94 horses, and riding runs from beginner equitation through polo, dressage, show jumping, and western.
Anyone in a horsemanship co-curricular must take an Equine Science course until they test out. The honor units keep the academy split: the Black Horse Troop and Lancers are CMA, the Equestriennes are CGA.
Riding adds roughly $625 to a CMA uniform bill and $750 to a CGA one, before tack and apparel.
What students and the school say
The call home will come
Culver's own parent guidance is unusually frank.
A school-published piece tells parents to expect the inevitable phone call in which their child says things are hard, explains that programs are built to push students to the edge of discomfort, and asks parents not to solve the problem from home but to send the student back to the counselor and Emotional Support Services.
Decide before enrolling whether that is a philosophy your family can live with.
The seniors agree it is hard. At the 2026 baccalaureate, a graduating speaker listed demanding schedules, dorm rooms without air conditioning, "a truly brutal winter" and weekend nights in disciplinary confinement, then said those were inseparable from the friendships that made the place matter.
The speeches are school-selected and celebratory, which makes the candor worth noting. On your visit, ask a current student about the worst week of last winter.
Pending litigation
The 2025 summer camp lawsuit
A federal civil suit filed in November 2025 on behalf of a 12-year-old camper alleges antisemitic bullying, physical assaults, and inadequate supervision during the 2025 session of Culver Summer Schools and Camps. It concerns the summer program, not the academic-year boarding school, and the claims are allegations, not findings.
Culver told WNDU it takes camper safety seriously, is cooperating with authorities, and is committed to dignity, respect, and inclusion for all participants. As of April 2026 the court had set a discovery deadline of January 2027, so a ruling is not close.
Check the docket before you sign a contract.
Cost and aid
What it costs, and who gets help
Tuition, room, and board is $69,500 for 2026–27; the Fall 2027 rate is not yet posted. Culver says 38% of families receive need-based aid and that the average award is about $36,000.
Aid runs through Clarity, which opens September 1 and charges $65 to submit, and complete files, including 2025 tax returns and 2026 W-2s, are due January 15 for full consideration. A ten-month payment plan runs May through February for a $100 annual fee.
The fine print matters. Initial application reviews are need-blind, but final selection is need-aware, so asking for aid can affect an offer.
Aid for Canadian and international families is limited. If parents are divorced or separated, both natural parents and any step-parents must file, and Culver says it is not bound by one parent's refusal to pay.
Awards are not automatic each year and can be reduced for financial, academic, or behavioral reasons.
Budget beyond the sticker. The handbook puts a CMA uniform issue at about $2,300 and a CGA issue at about $1,500, charged to the student account at registration.
Airport buses are $75 each way. Prescriptions, athletic gear, equestrian equipment, and the Senior Dinner Dance are billed separately, and the optional Global Spring Pathways trips run into the thousands (one 2027 trip is listed at $5,440).
Then there are the full rides. Five Distinguished Scholarships (Batten, Roberts, Duchossois, Huffington, and Little) cover tuition, room, and board, which Culver values at about $250,000 over four years; 62 scholars are on campus now.
Batten is open to incoming 9th and 10th graders from anywhere and adds books, a laptop, uniforms, a spring trip, and a summer program. The others have gates: Roberts for Western states, Duchossois for the central United States, Huffington for CMA theater and film talent from select states, Little for horsemanship, 4-H, or community involvement.
The scholarship essay sits inside the Culver supplement and is due with everything else by January 15; finalists hear in mid-February and winners get a phone call on March 1.
Applying
Applying in fall 2026 for Fall 2027 entry
Culver's Apply page is already the live 2027–28 file. Applications are due January 15 with a decision by March 1, and recommendations, transcripts, or scores that trickle in by early February will not delay the decision.
Use either the Standard Application Online or Gateway to Prep Schools, not both. The file is the usual set: student profile and essays, parent statement, the Culver supplement, a fee (the amount is not published; a waiver form is linked), English, math, and principal or counselor recommendations, transcripts, and test scores.
The testing menu is the clearest signal of which doors are open. Grade 9 applicants submit the SSAT or ISEE; grade 10 may add the PSAT (not the PSAT 8/9); grade 11 may use any of those, the SAT, or the ACT.
There is no menu for grade 12 or a postgraduate year, so do not assume those seats exist. International applicants also submit TOEFL iBT, Duolingo, or IELTS scores; Culver publishes no score floors.
The admissions office has a designated staff member for I-20 paperwork.
Visits and interviews for 2027–28 applicants run most Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays at 8:30 a.m., 10:45 a.m., and 1:00 p.m. Eastern, with remote interviews on any weekday. Culver calls the interview a great way to learn about the school and does not say it is required; ask.
While you are there, sit through a morning formation or inspection if your child is a boy, talk to a CGA prefect if your child is a girl, and try to see an ordinary evening CQ rather than a parade.
Travel and breaks
Getting there, and getting home
The year has a steady pattern: a fall weekend leave in October, Thanksgiving, a long winter break from mid-December to mid-January, a winter weekend in February, and a spring break from mid-March to early April.
The 2026–27 version runs October 15–18, November 21–29, December 19–January 12, February 12–16, and March 19–April 4; expect similar shape, not identical dates, for 2027–28. Campus closes and everyone must leave for Thanksgiving, winter, and spring breaks.
The handbook does not say the same about the two shorter weekends, so ask whether a child can stay.
New domestic students arrived August 15 this year, international students and some returning groups on August 12, and everyone stays on campus from arrival until matriculation in late August.
Culver runs chartered buses to South Bend, Indianapolis, and Chicago's O'Hare and Midway for each break at $75 one way, booked through a Student Life form with a firm deadline and a two-bag limit. Culver keeps Eastern Time; the Chicago airports are an hour behind, so build that into every itinerary.
Our read
Culver is a coherent, immersive place for a teenager who wants structure and a ladder to climb, and it is unusually honest in its own documents about the cost of that: inspections, phones in a locked office, a 20% absence line, and a counseling service that will refer long-term therapy elsewhere.
The two gendered leadership systems are the heart of the school, not a tradition on the side.
Before you sign, get four things in writing: the Fall 2027 price, which phone document controls, what your child's accommodation plan would look like under a Learning Support Plan, and how a new cadet or new girl reports a problem with an older student.
Our confidence is medium because the first two are still open on Culver's own pages.
Culver's phone rules, CQ supervision and weekend leaves
Culver's structure runs from evening study to weekend leave, so ask which rules govern Fall 2027 and who is on the floor after lights-out.
Rules, supervision and cost
- Which document governs phones for Fall 2027: the July 2026 handbook PDF or the older Living Units web page?
- Who is the adult on the floor during CQ and after lights-out in this unit, and how does a new cadet or new girl report a problem with an older student?
- If our child has an evaluation or accommodation plan, which parts would carry into a Learning Support Plan here?
- What will tuition be for 2027–28, and what did a family in this unit actually spend last year on uniforms, buses, and gear?
- Can a student stay on campus during the fall and winter weekend leaves, and what does that cost?
