Subjects that connect

Seventh graders read Just Mercy in English paired with forensic science, so one topic is explored as both literature and science.

By Grade 9, a phone becomes a science problem: how does it move information, and what keeps it intact? After studying waves, forces and energy, students build something that solves a practical problem; a protective phone case is one example in the curriculum.

Lower Division classroom teachers work in English and the target language, supported by specialists across science, the arts and movement. Flexible grouping and Junior Advanced Mathematics are among the school’s ways of adjusting the challenge.

    Two languages, taught forward

Nursery through Kindergarten divides learning between English and either Mandarin or Spanish. Grades 1–5 alternate languages daily.

Lessons advance across those days: switching languages does not mean teaching yesterday’s material again.

From Grade 6, students take Mandarin or Spanish in sections matched to their level, and novice sections give newcomers a path.

For children who already speak Mandarin or Spanish at home, the school says teachers adjust instruction to extend reading, writing and academic vocabulary.

      Courses, math and transcripts

Students usually take Integrated Math 1–4 between Grades 8 and 11. An advanced track covers the same core material with greater complexity and independence; entry needs math-faculty and dean approval.

Students can request a change of track at the start of Grades 9–11. Both routes can lead to calculus in senior year, with further approval or readiness checks for some advanced courses.

The school's 2025–26 profile says Avenues offers no Advanced Placement or International Baccalaureate courses, teaches nearly all courses at an honors level, and gives no GPA or class rank, with advanced courses unweighted.

        Applying for 2027–28

First Choice is binding: a family admitted agrees to enroll and withdraw other applications, so apply there only if Avenues is your first choice and you can commit.

Kindergarten applicants must be five by August 31. Entry in Grades 2–5 expects grade-level Mandarin or Spanish, with one exception: The Palms, a Grade 5 classroom for children new to both.

Middle-grades applicants take part in a group Design Challenge, and test results are optional. Grades 9–12 require ISEE or SSAT results.

          Costs and aid

Tuition covers books, lunch, devices, field trips and activity transport. Buses, after-school programs, summer camp and international programs cost extra, and Small World has its own fees.

Aid is need-based in every grade, but funding is limited; qualifying does not guarantee a grant.

Indicate aid needs on the preliminary application, then complete the separate Clarity application during admissions. Do not wait for an offer.

Families who enroll without aid generally wait three years to apply, unless a sibling joins. A financing plan after unforeseen events is not an automatic later grant.

Awards renew yearly from updated finances, and aid for extras such as extended day follows the same percentage.

            Afternoons and getting there

Beyond Stay and Play, the school offers specialty classes for Nursery through Grade 5 in art, dance, STEAM and sports, and private music lessons from Pre-K through Grade 12.

Brooklyn families can use Selby Bus Corp., a private, paid bus company with door-to-door service. The school says its buses have GPS and car seats for younger children.

Ask admissions for the current price and whether a route reaches your address.

              Learning support

From Grade 6, each student has a dean, a full-time mentor for wellbeing and academic success, who works with the Student Success Team of counselors, psychologists and learning experts.

The 2025–26 school profile says students with a language-based learning difference may take language courses for pass/fail credit or receive a language waiver. Ask how that works today.

                School ownership

In November 2023, Nord Anglia Education announced that Avenues New York and Avenues São Paulo had joined its network, while the other Avenues campuses stayed under existing management at that time.

                  Our read

Watch a day in the other language

For a child entering Grades 1–5, try to visit a lesson taught in the target language. Watch how the teacher handles a puzzled child, and ask what help a newcomer would receive.

Picture your child’s week, including the journey home. The language program may be the attraction, but classroom support and workable afternoons are what make it livable.

Testing Avenues' language immersion and its early aid round

Avenues' language program and binding First Choice round both deserve close questions before you commit to anything.

                  Worth asking directly

                  1. Can we sit in on a class taught in the target language at our grade, and how is a new or heritage speaker placed and supported?
                  2. If we apply for aid in the early round, when do we learn the award, and what are our options if it falls short?
                  3. Can we see the full first-year bill, including optional programs?
                  4. What would learning support look like day to day for my child, and who would we work with?
