Cinderella gets questioned first

First graders at Hewitt begin with a familiar story. In the school's account of its Cinderella project, the class reads several versions, compares the expectations placed on Cinderella and considers how much control she has over what happens to her.

Weeks of rehearsal lead to an original play on the school's theater stage. The children also make a stop-motion film with their art teacher, screening it before performing the play for teachers, families and lower-school classmates.

Cinderella, in other words, answers a few questions before she gets to the ball.

The play is the visible part. Underneath it is ordinary groundwork: the school describes kindergarten reading as phonics, letter formation and sounds, read-alouds and decodable texts, with first grade adding explicit letter-sound teaching and small guided groups, and third grade as the year reading becomes a way of learning other things.

How the habit grows up

By eighth grade the same habit has grown into a group capstone. Students choose an issue in their school or surrounding community, research its causes and effects, look at it from several perspectives and propose a prototype or plan for change.

Ninth grade is where the school teaches the habits behind the work directly. A required pass/fail seminar covers organizing time and materials, reading actively and taking notes, and speaking up for oneself; a research course covers judging and combining sources and includes an interview with an alumna.

English that year ends each unit with something performed or published, so the stage from first grade comes round again.

After that the path becomes optional.

Extended Inquiry is the honors route: ninth graders may apply after winter break and tenth graders after the first quarter, each with a faculty mentor, and in eleventh and twelfth grade it runs through honors research seminars that end in a long paper, a defense before a faculty panel and, in the second seminar, original work.

The catalog warns that not all courses run every year.

This year adds a teaching development to that last stage. Under a new partnership between Extended Inquiry and the Centre for Tutorial Teaching in Oxford, tenth and eleventh graders and their faculty mentors are receiving training in the tutorial method of researching, writing, revising and presenting a paper.

That mentors are trained alongside the students they guide is an encouraging sign for a research track that depends on them.

All of this is the school's own description of its program, which is the right starting point; a visit is where you see how much of it reaches the classroom.

Support in middle school

Middle school has Learning Lab, which any middle schooler can use, either to go further in a subject or to get extra help with a concept. Teachers decide who goes in which group from assessments and what they observe in class, and the groups change as needs do.

That describes a flexible way of organizing academic help, not special education services or individual accommodations, so a family that needs formal support should ask what the middle school provides and what documentation it expects.

Applying for 2027–28

Every family has a one-on-one parent or guardian conversation with an admissions team member. Applicants are seen in a group or one-on-one, depending on grade.

In every grade the application and aid forms are due December 1, 2026, all materials January 8, 2027, and appointments must be finished by January 15, 2027.

A few things the table can't show

The application page gives no count of open places, so ask admissions how entry works at the grade you need rather than treating an open application as an open seat. Hewitt is a day school with no boarding or housing, which matters for families applying from abroad.

Open houses, information sessions and tours change, so use the school's current admissions events page for dates; the lower school open house is awaiting a new date.

Hewitt's trustee-approved April 2022 gender statement promises continued enrollment for existing students whose gender identity changes. It addresses students already at the school, not eligibility for new applicants, so families with questions should ask admissions directly.

Cost and financial aid

The listed 2026–27 tuition covers meals, books, school devices, day trips, athletic and robotics uniforms and travel, and some bus service, covered below. Extras include After School, camp, optional international trips, test prep and college application fees, and instrument rental; families receiving aid get discounts on those.

Families who may need aid should apply during admission; one who enrolls at full tuition is considered later only after an unexpected drop in resources. Both parents' financial information is normally required, including a non-custodial parent, though a sole parent or guardian in certain circumstances can request a second-parent waiver.

Aid applications go through Clarity, which charges $80. Its checklist is headed 2026–27 even though the cycle is 2027–28, so confirm which year's documents the school wants.

Getting there and the afternoon

The campus page lists complimentary school buses from the Upper East Side, Upper West Side, Downtown Manhattan and Brooklyn, while the tuition page names only Brooklyn and Downtown Manhattan among included costs. Confirm routes and any charge for your neighborhood before building a commute around the service.

By subway, the 6 stops at 77th Street, about 0.2 miles away.

In kindergarten through grade 4, After School sells specialty classes by trimester, and a Hewitt Club option covers homework, Central Park playground time, games, crafts and reading. The public page lists no hours or prices, so families who rely on late pickup should ask for both.

Our read

Our read

What stands out is the through-line. Across the school's descriptions, students are repeatedly asked to look closely at something, make a thing of their own about it and present it to other people, from a first-grade play to an eighth-grade community project to a faculty-panel defense.

That repetition suggests the Cinderella play belongs to a pattern in the school's design, not a one-off showpiece.

Learning Lab, buses and ninth-grade entry at Hewitt

Ask how Hewitt's Learning Lab works in middle school, whether a bus serves your address, and how new ninth graders join the seminar and research track.

Support, buses and Grade 9 entry

  1. In middle school, how does Learning Lab work for a student who may need more than extra help, and what documentation do you ask for?
  2. Which bus route and stop would serve our address, and is there a charge?
  3. For ninth-grade entry, how do new students join the seminar and research track, and which courses run next year?
