Seattle schools

A Seattle-area school choice can cross a lake, a bridge, a ferry schedule, or several admissions systems. The program and the family route need to work together on a wet rush-hour day.

Bridges, ferries and five schools with different front doors

Updated October 7, 2026

The Seattle schools we cover sit in very different places: Lakeside in North Seattle, University Prep in Wedgwood, Bush in Madison Valley, Seattle Academy on Capitol Hill, and Annie Wright in Tacoma. A family on the Eastside or across the water should test the bridge or ferry trip at dismissal and after a late activity before falling for any of them.

Bush is the clearest about newcomers, typically about 36 in Kindergarten and about 30 each in Grades 6 and 9. Lakeside, UPrep and Seattle Academy have no Kindergarten; Grade 6 is where each begins, and Lakeside is changing its Grade 6 model for Fall 2027. Grade 9 adds openings at all of them, though only Bush publishes a count. The schools compared page lays out the grid.

Annie Wright needs a separate conversation. Its Lower and Middle Schools are coed, its Upper Schools are coordinate girls' and boys' programs, and a Grade 9 student may be a day student, a five-day boarder or a seven-day boarder. Each is a different family week; our boarding schools coverage helps if residential life is in play.

Seattle Public Schools runs its own assignment and School Choice process, and its Fall 2027 choice dates were not yet published when we checked, so keep the assigned public route alive until private offers and aid are settled. The admissions guide covers each school's process, and the admissions calendar tracks the dates.
