The GW relationship
Two separate opportunities, neither automatic
Sophomores may apply separately for one of up to 15 annual places in the GW associate-degree cohort. The program begins with a mandatory summer bridge before junior year.
Selection includes a transcript and testing review, essay, GW interview, and a Grade 10 team recommendation. It is not part of Grade 9 admission.
The separate Exposure program lets an eligible student in good standing with a 3.0 GPA and combined PSAT above 1000 apply for one available introductory GW course per semester. Placement depends on prerequisites and space.
Tuition is covered, but course fees and materials are not.
Dropping an Exposure course after the first week can leave nonrefundable charges and prevent another application for a year. Ask how many students used Exposure, which courses were unavailable, how college periods fit the school day, what families paid, and how later colleges treated the credit.
What the student will actually do
Required AP work, long projects, and self-management
Walls reports a 9:00–3:30 day. Every sophomore takes AP World History and every junior takes AP English Language.
Students who take AP courses sit for the exam. The school says course sections run only when at least 15 students request them, so a catalog option is not a guarantee.
The Senior Project combines an expert interview, research paper, product, portfolio, and public presentation; proficiency in the paper and presentation is required to participate in graduation. Juniors and seniors also complete a 60-hour internship with reflections, a résumé, and a portfolio.
Support and phones
The people are visible; service capacity is not
The school lists a social worker, psychologist, grade-level counselors, and a community-partner therapist. It describes short-term intervention, groups, referrals, classroom instruction, and coordination with outside therapists, with contact promised within one business day after a referral.
Caseloads, recurring-care wait times, and academic-learning support are not published.
DCPS provides IEP settings, a 504 process, multilingual services, and family interpretation. Those district rights do not reveal Walls’s actual special-education staffing, service minutes, 504 ownership, ESOL allocation, tutoring, or executive-function support.
Families needing an interview or writing accommodation should request the current process in writing before the event.
DCPS is phone-free from bell to bell, including lunch and transitions. Schools choose their storage system, with exceptions for documented instructional, medical, IEP, 504, or language needs.
Walls does not publish its exact storage, consequence, or emergency-contact procedure.
Life around classes
The city expands the day—and the commute can shrink it
The club page currently shows debate, Mock Trial, Model UN, robotics, student publications, arts, music, identity groups, and more. Clubs change and students can propose new ones.
Verify the sponsor and meeting time for anything central to the decision.
Walls participates in DCIAA and DCSAA and lists an athletic trainer, but the school does not publish a dependable complete list of current teams, facilities, transport, or return times. Ask where the intended sport practices and how the student gets there and home.
Foggy Bottom–GWU is the nearest Metro stop. Eligible DC students can use Kids Ride Free within the District.
Rehearse an 8:45 arrival and the trip home after an activity; a manageable midday tour is not the same commute.
There is no tuition for eligible DC residents. Walls is not a community-eligibility meal campus for 2026–27, so eligible families must apply for free or reduced meals.
Public pages do not consolidate class dues, trips, sports equipment, off-campus lunch, AP charges, prom, graduation, or GW materials.
Grade 9 and transfers
Grade 9 is the plan; transfer admission is a possibility
Grade 9 is the designed intake. The school first reviews grades and recommendations, then invites only the strongest applicants to the on-site writing exercise and family interview.
A 3.0 GPA makes an application reviewable; it does not make admission likely. The current rubric says a typical highly qualified applicant has at least 3.5.
Prior-cycle data make the scale concrete without predicting Fall 2027. For 2024–25, My School DC listed 190 Grade 9 seats, a 123-student waitlist on results day, and 18 later waitlist offers.
Those figures are neither an acceptance rate nor a forecast.
Grades 10–12 can apply, but the rubric says interviews occur only when seats and application volume allow. The same prior cycle began with five Grade 10 seats and no Grade 11 or 12 seats.
Later movement occurred in some grades. Families should not build a plan around a transfer opening.
The Fall 2027 calendar and rubric are still unknown. For the prior cycle, applications ran from December 15 to February 2, interviews were in late February, results arrived March 27, and enrollment closed May 1.
Watch the school and My School DC pages in fall 2026 rather than copying those dates forward.
How admission works
This is a scored school process followed by a citywide match
The current rubric allocates 30 of 100 points to two recommendations, 60 points to the family interview and on-site writing together, and 10 points to GPA after the interview. The accompanying adult’s participation is explicitly not scored.
The school does not publish the split between interview and writing or the prompt.
The public documents conflict on recommendations. The school rubric says an incomplete recommendation set does not automatically disqualify an applicant; a district chart says a missing recommendation receives zero.
Verify the Fall 2027 rule and track both submissions before the deadline.
Walls establishes eligibility and its ranked order. My School DC then attempts to match the student to the highest family-ranked option available.
A family’s preference order does not change the Walls score, but it does determine the final match and which higher choices remain as waitlists. Selective schools do not use sibling, boundary, or proximity preferences.
A strong public option for the teenager who wants its actual week
Walls combines small scale, real required work, and a downtown setting in a way few public high schools do. Grade 9 is the credible doorway; transfers should be treated as opportunistic.
The measured outcomes are strong, but this is a selected cohort. They do not answer the more personal questions about workload, belonging, support, commute, or whether the student will ask for help early enough.
