Citywide school in Shaw
Grade 10 is restricted by seats and course alignment
The public rubric contains ranking contradictions
Some coursework, tutoring, service, and activities extend the day
The full IB Diploma is an optional Grades 11–12 path
Required across four years
How the match works
Two important contradictions need a direct answer
The rubric first says eligible students are ordered by interview score, then says all eligible students receive equal ranking for the My School DC lottery. Those are materially different rules.
Ask whether Fall 2027 applicants will be equally ranked, interview-ranked, or ordered by a cumulative score.
The Banneker rubric says an incomplete recommendation set does not automatically penalize an applicant and review may use the recommendations received. District guidance says a late or missing recommendation receives zero.
Complete all three on time and request the controlling Fall 2027 rule in writing.
A separate page error gives both February 2 and March 2 for the prior deadline. The February date matches My School DC.
These inconsistencies are not reasons to distrust the whole process; they are reasons to follow the portal and verify ambiguous instructions before a deadline.
Families should rank schools in genuine preference order. Their order does not alter Banneker’s evaluation, but it determines the highest option the system can match and which higher-ranked waitlists remain.
Selective schools do not use sibling, boundary, or proximity preference.
The week a student will live
At Banneker, 3:15 is not always the end of school obligations
The handbook shows several schedules rather than one uniform week: six 55-minute classes and an hour lunch during many weeks, advisory schedules on many Mondays and Thursdays, and longer or modular blocks at other times. Lunch is closed; students remain in the cafeteria.
Early coursework or support may run around 7:30–8:30. Tutoring is scheduled Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday from 3:30–5:00, and extended activities generally continue to 5:00.
Some AP and IB obligations occur beyond the main day.
The handbook says each teacher may assign at least 30 minutes of homework nightly, with weekend work, required reading, and holiday packets possible. Six teachers can assign independently, so the statement should not be multiplied into a promised three-hour average.
Ask to see anonymized Grade 9 calendars from both a week without clustered exams or project deadlines and a peak week.
Entering freshmen and sophomores are expected to attend Summer Institute for literacy, math, science, language, study skills, technology, team building, and placement. Official materials conflict between four and five weeks.
Verify Fall 2027 dates, hours, attendance, transportation, meals, accommodations, and any cost.
Academics and IB
The prescribed program comes first; full IB is a later choice
Banneker’s regular route requires 26 Carnegie units; the full IB route requires 28.5. Grade 9 includes Pre-AP English, math, Latin I, biology, Pre-AP world history, computer applications, PE, and Community Lab.
All students take four years of math and science.
The IB Diploma begins in Grades 11–12 and includes higher-level English, history, and biology; standard-level mathematics, language, and visual arts; Theory of Knowledge; an Extended Essay; and Creativity, Activity, Service. The published path is liberal-arts oriented rather than an engineering-centered IB menu.
The full Diploma is optional. Public pages do not say who may enter, whether individual IB courses are available without the Diploma, how many students enter and finish, or the award rate.
The school-profile phrases ‘IB Diploma: 72%’ and ‘Exam Passed: 84%’ lack definitions and denominators, so we do not treat them as outcomes.
Dual enrollment can add opportunities, but the handbook says outside courses do not replace Banneker graduation requirements. Families should map the entire junior and senior schedule before assuming an outside course creates flexibility.
Community Lab
Service is a course and a logistics commitment
Community Lab requires 270 hours across four years: 45 in Grade 9, 45 in Grade 10, and 90 in each of Grades 11 and 12. It appears as a pass/fail report-card course with advisory checkpoints and may run every other Wednesday from roughly 2:00–4:00, plus selected full service days.
Support and access
The structures are visible; capacity and intensity are not
Banneker publishes cross-grade advisory, a teacher-advisor, three afternoons of tutoring, multiple counselors, a psychologist, social worker, wellness team, and an on-site therapist referenced in the handbook. These are meaningful structures, but they do not reveal caseloads, frequency, wait time, or learning-support intensity.
DCPS rights for IEP, 504, multilingual services, and admissions accommodations continue to apply at a selective school. Public pages do not show Banneker’s actual inclusion model, special-educator coverage in AP and IB, assistive-technology practice, executive-function support, therapist schedule, or multilingual staffing.
The school directory appears to mistype the special-education telephone prefix. Use the main office and request the correct contact.
Families needing an essay, writing, or interview accommodation should also request the Fall 2027 process and deadline before the event.
Phones, activities, and commute
Firm rules and a smaller activity footprint shape the experience
The handbook directs students to store phones and smartwatches in assigned lobby lockers before security and prohibits possession or use in the building. District policy allows documented educational, health, IEP, 504, multilingual, and exceptional-circumstance exceptions.
Ask how emergency contact, monitoring devices, accommodations, and a missing or damaged locker are handled.
The school publishes more than 34 clubs, but many directory entries do not identify an active sponsor. Treat the list as a conversation starter.
Ask which groups met last month, when they meet, and whether tutoring, Community Lab, athletics, and the trip home conflict.
Published sports include soccer, cross-country, volleyball, basketball, cheer, track, tennis, flag football, stunt, and softball. School sources conflict on whether and when a student may play an unavailable sport at another DCPS campus.
Verify the current grade rule, facility, transport, dismissal, and return time.
The school is at 1600 9th Street NW in Shaw. Test the trip for a 7:30 arrival and 5:00 departure, not only the 8:45–3:15 day.
Eligible DC students can use Kids Ride Free, and Banneker is a community-eligibility meal school. Fall 2027 renewal should be confirmed.
There is no tuition for DC residents, but no public all-in cost sheet. Calculators, course materials, PE clothing, sports items, trips, Community Lab travel, prom, graduation, college applications, exams, resits, or Summer Institute may create costs.
Ask which were actually charged last year rather than assuming all apply.
Grade 9 and transfers
Grade 9 is the plan; Grade 10 is a narrow exception
Grade 9 is Banneker’s intended intake. The current first review awards 20 points for report cards, six for the online essay, and 24 for three recommendations.
The essay asks how the student would balance a rigorous workload with social, emotional, and personal demands.
The recommendations come from the Grade 8 English teacher, Grade 8 math teacher, and a principal, assistant principal, counselor, or administrator. The rubric says successful applicants usually show As and Bs, but it does not publish a minimum GPA.
Lower grades are not an automatic disqualifier under the written rule.
Students who advance complete a family interview with an on-site writing task, worth 15 points. The student is scored on articulation, content, poise, and writing.
The accompanying adult attends an information session and is not scored. A 12 generally establishes eligibility, though the rubric says lower-scoring applicants may receive cumulative review.
Grade 10 is admitted only on a restricted basis when space exists and the prior coursework aligns with Banneker’s prescribed sequence. In the prior 2024–25 table, Grade 10 had 22 initial seats compared with 260 in Grade 9.
Those figures are planning context, not current odds or acceptance rates.
Grades 11 and 12 are not current entry points. The Fall 2027 calendar, seat counts, essay, and rubric remain unpublished.
Prior-cycle applications ran from December 15 to February 2, but families should watch My School DC rather than rolling those dates forward.
A compelling public-school option when the student wants the actual model
Banneker’s appeal is not a single IB label. It is a coherent four-year program built from prescribed academics, service, advisory, firm expectations, tutoring, and a citywide community.
The strongest measured outcomes sit beside fair questions about workload, self-efficacy, belonging, support intensity, and the amount of the week that stretches beyond the published day. Those questions do not diminish the school; they help a family choose it honestly.
