The entry-year reality
Grade 9 is the designed doorway; later entry depends on a vacancy
The school currently describes about 250 Grade 9 seats. Ninth grade is the clearest entry point because every department expects a four-year commitment and can build a cohort from the beginning.
Grades 10, 11, and 12 are considered only when a department has room. The school does not publish recent vacancies by grade or strand.
A transfer applicant should ask for three years of actual numbers before treating later entry as a dependable plan.
The Vocal Music and Classical Piano packet already distinguishes current Grade 8 applicants from students in Grade 9 or above. Older applicants prepare two selections, including an Italian classical piece and a jazz standard.
Other departments may also expect an older student to enter closer to the continuing cohort’s level, but current progression rules are not published.
Before the portfolio
Choose the art first, because the application allows one department
Applicants select one department or strand. This is not a general arts audition followed by a year of exploration.
The practical first question is whether the student wants that art to anchor the high-school week for four years.
The public list combines some names, including Commercial Music’s Electronic Music and Guitar pathways and Vocal Music with Classical Piano. The school says it has 16 strands, while the page shows 15 combined labels.
Ask how the internal strand count works and whether students can move between paired pathways.
Current pages describe Architecture + Design, Conservatory Dance, Conservatory Instrumental Music, Commercial Music, Costume + Fashion, Creative Writing, Media + Film, Musical Theater, Spoken Art, Theater, Technical Theater, Visual Art, Vocal Music + Classical Piano, World Dance, and World Music. The assignments are not equally complete yet.
The portfolio-style pathways
Six published assignments ask students to make work before audition day
Architecture + Design asks for three uploads: a freehand one-point-perspective neighborhood street drawn from life, hand lettering in three styles, and one choice piece. Audition day adds a drawing exercise, a math exercise, and a brief interview.
Costume + Fashion asks for two original fashion drawings and one character costume drawing based on a story or performance. Students bring three sewn projects, join a guided hand-sewing activity, discuss their work, and may try the industrial machines.
Basic sewing is expected; advanced sewing is not.
Creative Writing asks for a personal narrative, two poems, a three-to-five-page story, and a statement about why the student wants to write. Applicants prepare to read one poem and bring their current book.
The packet contradicts itself on several counts and lengths, so families should request written clarification.
Media + Film asks for a two-minute introduction film that shows the student’s artistic voice. A phone is acceptable, and animation or elaborate editing is optional.
The department describes a serious two-hours-a-day, five-days-a-week program, but it does not publish the exact live audition activity.
Technical Theater asks for a two-point-perspective drawing, a landscape, and a shoebox-sized set, scene, or sculpture made from found materials. The work must be original.
The current packet does not explain the live exercise or interview in enough detail to summarize it safely.
Visual Art asks for a pencil self-portrait from a mirror, a pencil still life, and one choice drawing. Applicants also complete an in-person drawing and a brief interview.
The school encourages a filled page, shading, and visible shadows.
The current assignment page also places Commercial Music in the advance-upload group, but its packet is not yet linked. One other current page omits Commercial Music from that group.
Do not rely on an older packet; ask the department which Fall 2027 assignment controls.
The performance pathways
Five published auditions show exactly what students should prepare
Conservatory Dance asks for a 60-to-90-second solo in any style and a live ballet, jazz, and contemporary class. The published rubric gives 40% to technique and 20% to learning choreography.
It also scores stage presence, corrections, stamina, and the prepared solo.
Musical Theater asks for one approved memorized monologue and a 30-to-60-second musical-theater song. The day includes group movement, an introduction, possible redirection, the song, and a short panel conversation.
The school provides a pianist and says prior dance or theater training is not required.
Theater asks for one memorized monologue from the approved list and a Shakespeare monologue that will be workshopped. The Shakespeare piece need not be memorized.
Applicants also join group movement, receive a short Shakespeare lesson, take redirection, and answer a few questions.
Vocal Music + Classical Piano asks current Grade 8 students for one classical, jazz, or musical-theater selection. Older students prepare an Italian classical selection and a jazz standard.
The school provides an accompanist and limits sight-reading to applicants who have studied Western notation.
World Music asks students to learn three rhythm and body-choreography phrases from the school’s video. Audition day includes individual and group work with taiko and Afro-Brazilian drums.
Prior drumming is not required, and the department says 80% of its students entered without it.
Current Fall 2027 assignments are still missing for Conservatory Instrumental Music, Spoken Art, and World Dance. Their program pages explain what students study, but not enough about this audition.
We will not fill those gaps with old requirements or guesses.

Several official pages still need a careful Fall 2027 cleanup
One current page prints the deadline as Friday, December 11, 2027. Every other school and district page says December 11, 2026, and the weekday matches 2026.
Treat the later year as a likely typo, but ask the school to confirm in writing.
The prospective-student and assignment pages include Commercial Music among the advance-upload programs. The Apply page omits it.
The assignment index also retains a 2026–27 title even though it says it was updated for 2027–28.
Creative Writing’s packet says “Four (2) poems” and gives conflicting minimum lengths for two pieces. High School Night is dated October 14 on one live page and still marked TBD on another.
These errors do not make the program unserious, but they make direct confirmation essential.
The school says the admissions site will be fully updated by late September or October 1. Save a copy of the packet used, check again after that date, and do not let a tutor or old web result become the family’s authority.
The day the student will live
Two daily arts periods reshape the whole week
Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday run from 8:40 a.m. to 3:35 p.m. Wednesday ends at 2:20. Academic classes usually meet three times a week for about 80 minutes, while arts total about ten hours and occupy two of seven periods.
Period 6 meets each day, and Period 7 meets on the four longer days. That creates the sustained studio or rehearsal time families come for.
It also means an arts commitment is not tucked around an otherwise conventional schedule.
The admissions FAQ says students must rehearse and perform beyond school hours. The frequency is not published by strand.
Ask each department for last year’s required evening, weekend, tech-week, jury, exhibit, and performance calendar before judging the workload.
Some program pages make the intensity especially visible. Media + Film describes two hours a day, five days a week.
Vocal Music + Classical Piano estimates 10 to 15 hours weekly. Technical Theater supports more than 50 productions, which makes production calendars and late rides a serious family question.
The academic side
There is real rigor, but not unlimited course choice
SOTA describes a college-preparatory academic program, and students can pursue AP and community-college courses. The 2025–26 profile advised a maximum of four AP classes across high school.
Most APs were aimed at juniors and seniors, and some belonged to particular arts strands.
The same profile says budget constraints reduced AP offerings and that students do not always receive requested APs. Its published list included art, biology, calculus, English, environmental science, music theory, Spanish, statistics, and US history.
Families should ask which courses actually ran and who could enroll.
The ordinary math route places Grade 9 students in Algebra I and Grade 10 students in Geometry. Preapproved summer work may alter the sequence.
Later options depend on preparation, and AP Calculus requires at least a C+ in the compressed course.
School-reported 2025 AP results cover 292 students and 637 exams, with 89% scoring 3 or higher. Those are useful participation and exam results.
They do not show who requested an AP but could not fit it, and they do not erase the timetable tradeoff created by two arts periods.
Support in practice
The services are visible; their fit with the arts block needs testing
The school publishes grade-based counselor assignments and a dedicated college adviser. Its College Center supports college search, applications, scholarships, and financial aid.
The public pages do not give counselor caseloads, typical waits, or the boundary between short-term help and ongoing therapy.
The Wellness Center lists a coordinator, a RAMS counselor, a nurse, a community-health worker, and interns. It describes services as confidential within minor-consent and safety limits.
Ask what is available every day and how students enter ongoing care.
Special education includes full-inclusion services and a special day class when the IEP team determines that setting. Case managers co-teach and offer study-skills support.
The school lists resource and special-education teachers, a psychologist, and paraprofessionals, but it does not publish service schedules.
Section 504 and multilingual services follow district rules. CDE counted 12 English learners, or 1.8% of enrollment, in 2025–26.
Families should ask how ELD, IEP, 504, and counseling time fit a schedule with a fixed two-period arts block.
The University of San Francisco describes ArtAbility as a 2024–25 collaboration for students in the special day class. It also says those students had been underrepresented in arts strands.
That is useful history, not proof of a current service. Ask whether the program continues and what equivalent arts access now looks like.
The practical geography
Test the trip home after rehearsal, not only the morning ride
The campus is at 555 Portola Drive, near Twin Peaks, Diamond Heights, Forest Hill, Miraloma Park, and West Portal. SFMTA lists the 36 Teresita, 37 Corbett, 44 O’Shaughnessy, 48 Quintara/24th, and 52 Excelsior among school-serving routes.
The school says parking is very limited and recommends walking, biking, Muni, or carpooling. A route that works at 8 a.m. may feel different after a performance.
Families should rehearse both trips and identify a backup for late dismissal.
Academy–San Francisco moved from the campus to Wallenberg for 2026–27. Ask what changed in room access, security, athletics, cross-program courses, and shared facilities.
The public announcement does not answer those SOTA-specific questions.
The full family cost
Tuition is free; participation can still require money and time
SOTA is an SFUSD public school, so tuition is $0. District policy says required supplies, materials, and equipment for curricular and extracurricular educational activities must be free.
Voluntary donations and fundraising are allowed.
SFUSD provides one free breakfast and lunch each school day in 2026–27. The Fall 2027 meal policy is not published yet.
Families should verify the new year rather than assume the current arrangement will continue unchanged.
The assignments include several access-friendly choices. A phone can make the Media film, Musical Theater and Vocal Music provide an accompanist, and World Music requires no prior drumming.
Commercial Music also lists substantial school equipment, including iMacs, Ableton, controllers, mixers, microphones, samplers, and synthesizers.
No official source says private lessons are required. Still, parents should ask about instruments, cameras, dancewear, sewing and art materials, printing, performance clothing, trips, tickets, and late rides.
They should also ask what may be borrowed and taken home.
The current application
The Fall 2027 deadline comes well before the general Main Round
SFUSD plans to post tour information on October 1, 2026. The district application opens October 23, and the Enrollment Fair is October 24.
SOTA’s application and required assignment upload are due December 11 at 5 p.m.
The in-person audition is January 9, 2027, at 555 Portola Drive. Department times should appear by 5 p.m. on December 19.
SFUSD expects assignment letters during the week of March 15, with replies due March 25.
The application has three parts: rank SOTA in the SFUSD application, complete one department’s assignment, and attend that department’s audition. The family must live with a parent or legal guardian in San Francisco at application and throughout enrollment.
SOTA does not accept interdistrict permits.
In the prior cycle, a student who qualified for SOTA could still receive a higher-ranked available school. An unsuccessful audition did not remove the family’s other SFUSD choices.
That is useful planning context, but confirm the exact Fall 2027 placement and waitlist rules when SFUSD finishes its update.
A rare public-school opportunity when the four-year tradeoff fits
Ruth Asawa SOTA offers arts depth that many families could otherwise find only through private tuition or a patchwork of after-school programs. For the right student, daily practice with a committed cohort can make high school feel coherent and deeply personal.
The opportunity is not simply “free conservatory training.” Arts consume real schedule space and family time.
Course access, late transportation, materials, building conditions, and support delivery all deserve department-level questions before a family commits.
