What to do this week

This page is the calendar: which date belongs to which step, in order. For the overall plan, including building the list, the file, aid and offers, start with the Kindergarten admissions guide. The table below covers the dates schools share; the October section shows what two school-specific deadlines actually secure.

The useful trick is to stop saying 'the deadline' and name which of five different things is due:

  • Application: the form itself, submitted in the school's portal.
  • Appointment: the playgroup, visit or parent conversation, booked on the school's calendar.
  • Complete file: every required piece received, including the teacher's report and your statement.
  • Aid: a separate application with its own clock.
  • Reply: your answer once a decision arrives.

Finishing one does not finish the others. Put all five in one shared note and keep it on the adult side of the kitchen table; the four-year-old's week can stay mostly ordinary.

The shared ISAAGNY calendar, 2026–27

Setup is the quiet part: a shortlist, a portal account for each school, a few open houses. Applications cannot open before August 1, and schools add their own requirements on top of the shared dates below.

That November 6 time is a floor, not a shared closing date, so ask each early-notification school for its own cutoff.

October: what a deadline actually secures

Horace Mann is the clearest example of why 'deadline' needs a second word. For kindergarten, it guarantees a playgroup and parent interview only to families who have both submitted the application and scheduled the visit by October 15; the application form itself is due November 18. After October 15, families can't self-schedule online, though the school may offer a later interview if it has room. The interview is part of the file, so a missing appointment leaves the file incomplete.

Trinity's is simpler to state and easier to misread. Applications close October 16 at 5 p.m., and the school says its tour and interview spaces are limited and that it cannot meet every applicant, whenever they apply. Submitting is necessary; it is not a promise of a visit.

For each school on your list, find its earliest date and ask what that date secures: a submitted form, a scheduled visit, or a complete file. In early January, confirm in each portal or with the office that the file really is complete.

Reports, statements and aid run alongside

The confidential teacher report is the piece with the most people in it. Your child's current teacher completes it and sends it straight to each school, so parents neither carry it nor read it. ISAAGNY's 2026–27 kindergarten and grade 1 form tells teachers to send completed forms to schools, not the association, and warns that one teacher may receive several requests, since each school has its own software.

The form's own timing note suggests teachers not submit before November 1, which is about when the teacher sends the report, not when you ask for it. For a planning buffer, we suggest asking the preschool at least four working weeks before the earliest report deadline, counting around Thanksgiving and winter closure. Early-round families have the November 30 report date in the calendar, so for them that means now.

Your own part is the parent statement or essay, which some schools ask for; the companion guide covers it with the report.

Aid is its own application, with its own platform, documents and date, and ISAAGNY publishes no kindergarten aid date. Horace Mann asks for aid materials by November 15, three days before its application form, and suggests starting in early October so the figures are current. Spence's aid deadline is December 1, the same day as its application. Decisions generally arrive with or soon after admission notification.

Early notification is a narrow lane

Early notification is limited to families with specified connections to a school, such as a sibling or a parent who attended; the complete list of categories is worth reading before you assume you qualify. Schools may narrow the list or skip the round.

Qualifying is not admission: earlier timing is a process category, not a promise. Member schools may not require first-choice letters and need not accept the ones that arrive, so a letter guarantees nothing.

Birthdays and the public option

Private cutoffs are school dates. Most ISAAGNY schools want kindergartners to be five by September 1 of the entry year, but each school can set its own; Spence, for example, uses August 31, 2027. Check the date on each school's page before assuming a birthday works.

Public kindergarten counts differently: a child enters in the September of the calendar year they turn five. A child who turns five after September 1 and by December 31, 2027 is therefore on time for public school and still four at the private September 1 line. Carry neither rule across to the other system.

The public kindergarten application opens December 9, 2026, closes January 22, 2027, and offers are released March 30, 2027. The public school guide covers the process.

That leaves a planning gap, because the public offer comes after the private reply. A resident five-year-old is guaranteed a public kindergarten seat, so the real question is whether you are ready to commit to a private one first. In January, decide which private outcomes you would say yes to. Before February, ask each school for its enrollment contract and what is due on acceptance, and read the terms yourself.

If you are starting late

Late is not the same as closed, but it needs a phone call rather than an assumption. Schools set their own application windows, and some close by number of applications rather than by date. Schools whose main purpose is serving students with learning differences or disabilities may admit on a rolling schedule, so the shared calendar may not describe them.

After the relevant reply deadline, which is February 11, 2027 for regular kindergarten, member schools may still accept applicants, and anyone accepted then gets at least a week to decide. That is permission, not a promise that a seat exists, so ask directly whether kindergarten places remain. Aid keeps its own clock, so raise it in the same first message.

Keeping it proportionate

A calendar tells you when schools need things. It cannot tell you which schools suit your child, how many applications your household can complete well, or which commute you can live with in February.

Choose the schools you can picture on an ordinary Tuesday, let the paperwork stay with the grown-ups, and leave the rest of the week to the person the spreadsheet is, after all, about.
