What each school actually asks for
It is early October, and the instinct is to book a test before anyone has checked whether the school wants one. A fifth grader does not need every available exam. The first job is reading, which is less thrilling than registering but costs nothing.
Three schools show how much the answers differ: Fieldston, Chapin and Avenues.
| School | Testing | Teacher form and records |
|---|---|---|
| Fieldston | ISEE or SSAT report; test administered before December 31, 2026 | Current fifth-grade teacher; school report from an administrator; last year's grades plus this year's first marking period or semester |
| Chapin | Own in-person math and English assessment; do not send ISEE or SSAT scores | Separate English and math teacher forms, even when one teacher teaches both; school reports for the last two years plus fall 2026, sent by your child's school |
| Avenues | ISEE or SSAT optional; in-person Design Challenge | Required documents requested through its portal |
Avenues lists the test as optional for grades 6–8 and asks for no minimum score. Optional means optional, so decide it on your child and your own appetite for another test day, not on a rumor about advantage.
Booking the right test and support
A child entering sixth grade in fall 2027 is a fifth grader now, which matters when the tests name their levels. The ISEE sets its level by the grade a student is applying to, so a sixth-grade applicant takes the Lower Level, which covers grades 5–6. The SSAT lists its Middle Level for grades 5–7, which includes a current fifth grader.
Scoring differs too. The ISEE has no penalty for wrong answers, while the SSAT Middle Level subtracts a quarter point for each wrong answer and nothing for blanks. Guessing advice from one test does not transfer, so read the official instructions for the one you book. The ISEE allows one sitting per season: fall is August–November, winter December–March, spring and summer April–July.
If your child may need supports on the ISEE, apply for approval before booking. Submit the request at least several weeks ahead; once the file is complete, review can take one to two weeks, and you then choose a site that offers what was approved. The accommodations page lists the documents it accepts, so start there.
Approval for the ISEE is for the ISEE. Ask each school separately how its own assessment handles supports, and look up the SSAT's own process if that is the test you book.
Sending and reading reports
Read each school's test-date wording closely. A date by which a test must be taken is not a date by which the report must arrive, so ask the admissions office to clarify any ambiguous deadline.
ISEE reports appear in your parent account and go automatically to the schools you choose. Online results are usually ready in three to five days, paper in five to ten. You can choose recipients at registration or after seeing the report, and adding one later costs nothing, but a recipient cannot be removed after the test date. Schools receive the complete report; sections cannot be mixed across sittings.
A percentile compares your child with same-grade ISEE takers over the previous three years, not with the share of questions answered correctly, and stanines sort scores into nine bands. That comparison group is made up of students applying to independent schools, so numbers can look lower than the ones you are used to seeing. A report is one part of an application, not a diagnosis. Ask each school how it uses scores.
For the SSAT, score delivery also depends on the Testing Experience Statement. A parent or guardian needs to submit it before the family or schools can receive results.
Teacher forms after November 1
ISAAGNY asks families to wait until after November 1 to request middle school recommendations, so teachers have time to know your child.
Name one teacher if one teaches English and math, and both if two do. The teacher gets an email with a secure link, and the completed form goes straight to the schools, so there is nothing for you to upload or forward. Your request is the first step; the teacher's submission is the second, and it has to arrive by the file completion deadline. Where a school's page asks for something different, follow the school.
School records
Records are the part your child's current school controls, so the useful question is how it sends them. Ask the office whether records move by portal, email or something else, whether it needs a release from you, and when this year's first report will be ready. October is a polite time to ask; December is a hurry.
If a school's page is unclear about which years or reports it wants, ask that school's admissions office to confirm before the current office sends anything.
Checking receipt, then the next move
ISAAGNY says schools update a form's status once they have received and processed it, so check each school's portal and allow time before chasing anyone.
Records and score reports work the same way: the portal shows what arrived, not what was sent. If something is missing after a fair wait, ask the sender, then ask admissions what its file shows.
Settle the school list, read each page for what it asks, and book only that. The main dates for the year live in the timeline guide linked below.
