Three courses at a time under CMAP

NMH’s standard load is at least three credits per semester and six per year. One full credit equals a traditional year of study compressed into a single semester; a half credit represents a traditional half-year.

A normal course meets daily for 70 minutes, which can leave room for a deep reading, a lab, or a rehearsal. Students may request up to 3.5 credits in a semester and seven in a year with academic-dean approval and must complete at least 22 credits to graduate.

The catch is speed. The curriculum guide warns that missing more than 20% of any academic, physical education, athletic, workjob, or cocurricular commitment for any reason may cost credit or change the grading basis.

Students cannot choose the semester in which a course is scheduled, and advanced, honors, and elective requests may require alternates. A theoretically balanced plan can become uneven because of prerequisites, single-section offerings, or activity conflicts.

NMH stopped offering AP courses and uses Advanced Scholars courses instead. In the school’s numbering, 500-level work is described as college level and 600-level work as advanced college level.

Some courses may require students to learn extra AP content or skills, and students may take no more than three AP exams in a year. Advanced and honors access can depend on prior grades, prerequisites, teacher recommendations, department review, and scheduling.

Advisors work with no more than seven students. Families receive three written advisor updates plus midterm and end-of-semester comments.

Grades use an unweighted 4.0 scale, with midterm and semester reports. The guide also describes preparation and engagement feedback.

Living on campus: boarders, day students, and dorm life

The school profile counts 103 day students out of 630, leaving 527 boarders—about 84%. Day families enter a community whose social rhythm does not end at dismissal.

Every day student is affiliated with a dorm and can join dorm parties, study sessions, and occasional weekend sleepovers. Because the social center of gravity moves into dorms after dinner, evening rehearsals, games, and group study will shape family routines just like daytime classes.

Dorms range from 14 to 150 students. Each has a faculty dorm head who lives in the building, typically several other faculty affiliates, and at least one faculty member living with family as a dorm parent.

Student resident leaders add peer leadership. Faculty and a resident leader are on duty each night.

Ninth-grade boarders begin in dedicated first-year dorms, then generally move to mixed-grade housing and may remain connected to the same dorm.

Advisors are affiliated with the student’s dorm and may live there; dorm faculty also cover evenings and weekends.

Every student completes three hours of workjob each week, and passing workjob is a graduation requirement.

NMH describes Friday intramurals, home games, movies, dances, concerts, festivals, local-town shuttles, and occasional trips to Boston or New York. Transportation to local religious services can also be arranged.

The 2026–27 calendar identifies several Closed Community weekends when students cannot travel off campus for community building or pre-assessment preparation. Early departure for a break requires permission from the associate dean of students.

Applying for Fall 2027: deadlines, testing, and entry routes

The single deadline that matters for Fall 2027 entry is January 15, 2027. Families may use the Standard Application Online or Gateway to Prep Schools, and new-family need-based aid materials are due the same day.

Decisions are scheduled for March 10. Every applicant interviews, and the file includes current English and math teacher recommendations.

General testing is optional: NMH says families may submit SSAT, ISEE, ACT, PSAT, or SAT scores if they strengthen the file, and that not submitting will not count against the student. The school therefore does not provide test-fee waivers.

For a non-native English speaker, NMH expects TOEFL iBT scores of 100 or higher, accepts IELTS, EIKEN, and Duolingo, and may waive the test after two years in a fully English-language curriculum.

Applicants from China and South Korea whose native English is not their primary language must also complete an InitialView live interview and writing sample. NMH advises arranging it at least two weeks before the deadline.

Arts and athletic supplements are optional; submit one only when it adds concrete evidence rather than repeating the activities list.

A typical ninth grader takes six credits across the year—three each semester—often five full-credit courses plus two half-credit courses.

Required pieces include ninth-grade English, introductory religious studies and philosophy unless the student is in ESOL, a half-credit arts foundation, and a one-term health course; language, math, and science fill out the core; physics is the usual first science.

The public Grade 9 page says the athletics and cocurricular requirement is under review and that advisors will explain the adopted version after arrival, so ask for the finalized 2027–28 requirement before signing the contract.

Math placement uses prior records, teacher recommendations, prerequisites, and summer testing. Most new ninth graders enter Algebra I or Geometry, some enter Algebra II or Precalculus, and a student who has already completed high-school physics may move into biology or honors biology.

Transfer credit is evaluated by the registrar, while departments determine placement in sequential subjects. A new tenth grader’s published program is highly prescribed: world literature or ESOL, the Humanities II pairing of world history and world religions, language, math, biology or physics depending on prior work, and the remaining required credit.

Sophomores complete a Diversity, Equity, and Social Justice requirement.

A new eleventh grader generally takes American literature, U.S. history, language, math, science, and an elective. Prior U.S. history taken after Grade 9 may satisfy the requirement after registrar review.

A one-year senior or PG has limited room too: NMH’s guide requires English and can require NMH-based religion and art work even when prior credits cover other areas. PGs receive a dedicated advisor, an academic advisor, and a specialized college counselor while joining senior classes and the wider community.

Tuition, the all-in budget, and financial aid

For 2026–27, boarding tuition, room, and board are $79,382, plus $1,625 in published additional fees, for an $81,007 base. Day tuition is $52,181, plus $3,025 in fees, for a $55,206 base.

International boarding uses the same tuition plus $2,675 in listed fees, for an $82,057 base.

Those numbers are not the whole budget. Families also need books averaging about $500, a laptop estimated at $300 to $1,200, travel, personal expenses, optional weekend activities, athletic or arts equipment, lessons, tutoring, and health insurance where required.

The fee sheet estimates about $150 per sport for equipment, about $150 for art materials, and $75 per hour for music or dance lessons based on 2025–26 rates. School charter buses cost an estimated $50 to $100 one way to New York, Boston, or airports.

International students on F-1 visas must use the school health plan, whose current price is not stated in the fee sheet.

Tuition refund insurance costs 1.85% of the family’s tuition responsibility and is mandatory unless the balance is paid in full by July 1. The fee schedule illustrates billed totals including this insurance of $82,476 for boarding, $56,172 for day, and $83,526 for international boarding.

Because insurance can be waived under the stated payment condition, keep it separate from the school’s base price.

NMH says it meets 100% of demonstrated need for every admitted student, domestic or international. Meeting 100% of demonstrated need for admitted students is not the same claim as need-blind admission.

Current school financial highlights report $13 million in aid for 38% of students. For 2026–27, the average grant is $57,472 for a boarding student and $35,802 for a day student.

New-family admission and aid materials are due January 15, 2027; decisions are scheduled for March 10, with awards within 24 hours. NMH now uses Clarity and requires information from relevant adults across households.

Health, counseling, and academic support

The health center reports a physician, nurse practitioner, and nurses available around the clock while school is in session, with weekday walk-in or scheduled care and a physician or NP on call after hours and weekends.

Independently licensed counselors work weekdays and remain on call for urgent needs at night and on weekends; a psychiatrist visits weekly for more complex needs.

Counseling can be short- or long-term, but the public page does not say how often a student can be seen or what happens after a hospitalization, so a student needing ongoing care should have a written continuity plan before enrollment.

CASA provides accommodations for documented disabilities, weekly academic coaching, and an evening CASA Lab. These services are included in tuition, but coaching is assigned at the director’s discretion with priority to documented need.

The curriculum guide describes weekly one-hour CASA tutorials and a twice-weekly 90-minute lab for up to 12 students. Teacher help, writing, math, science, and some peer tutoring are available without extra charge; individual subject tutoring, when available, costs extra.

The 2026–27 fee sheet cites about $75 an hour based on the prior year’s rate.

Accommodations provide access; they do not alter essential course, curriculum, or graduation requirements. NMH offers a meaningful general-school support system, not a specialized therapeutic or remedial program.

Campus breaks and mandatory closures

NMH sits at One Lamplighter Way in Mount Hermon, Massachusetts, near Interstate 91. The school identifies Bradley International as the nearest international airport and Brattleboro, Vermont, as the closest Amtrak station, and the May schedule lists only JFK and Logan service.

Residence halls and campus close for November, winter, and spring breaks. In 2026–27, the November closure runs from November 21 at noon to November 29; winter begins December 18 at noon; spring runs from March 6 at noon to March 22.

Families must plan housing and ground transportation, not just airfare.

Our read

The structure is compelling; the private operating rules decide fit

NMH’s strongest proposition is coherent: concentrate on three long-block courses at a time, live in a community where adults and peers see you across settings, and contribute through workjob, arts, athletics, and residential life. The curriculum, support pages, and current calendar give families more substance than slogans alone.

The main caution is compression. Fewer courses at once is not less annual work, and a full-credit course moving through a year of content in one semester can magnify illness, poor placement, executive-function strain, and a slow adjustment.

Ask for recent schedules, course-change data, and recovery protocols before concluding that CMAP is a match.

Catch-up, placement and the weekend mix at NMH

NMH students take fewer courses at once, so ask how catch-up and placement work and how day students and boarders mix outside class.

Academics, cost and community

  1. In our child's entry grade, how do advisors and subject teachers handle catch-up if a student misses several consecutive 70-minute classes because of illness?
  2. What specific math, science, and world language placement pathways are open to a new student in their first semester?
  3. What is a realistic first-year out-of-pocket budget beyond tuition for books, athletic gear, weekend trips, and break travel?
  4. If our child needs academic coaching or health support, how quickly are services arranged through CASA or the health center, and which ones carry added fees?
  5. How do day students and boarders mix during evenings and weekends, and how often do day students stay for dinner or dorm sleepovers?
