What the school is
An independent 6–12 day school on a shared historic campus
The school is at 50 Valparaiso Avenue in Atherton. Admissions is 650.330.2001 ext. 2600, and campus security is 650.799.4993.
The California Department of Education lists CDS 41 69062 6940118, grades 6–12, and Head of School Than Healy. That directory was last updated September 30, 2025.
Menlo traces itself to the 1915 William Warren School and a 1994 legal split from Menlo College. The two remain separate entities sharing a 62-acre campus.
Than Healy became Head in July 2013.
CAIS lists Menlo as a full-member day school for grades 6–12. Its published mission emphasizes exploration, college preparation, and ethical membership in wider communities.
Menlo’s pages do not quite agree on enrollment. At a Glance lists 845 students, including 619 Upper and 226 Middle.
The admissions hub and CAIS list 844, while Why Menlo still shows 805.
The best current estimate is 844–845 students; the 805 figure appears to be older. For a family assessing school size, the one-student difference between 844 and 845 is immaterial.
Transfers and other grades
Applications are open, but seats depend on March re-enrollment
For Fall 2027, Menlo’s special-circumstances section lists transfer applications in Grades 7, 8, 10, 11, and 12. The FAQ on that same page lists Grades 7, 8, 10, and 11 but omits Grade 12.
Families considering Grade 12 should confirm eligibility in writing before paying or requesting records.
Menlo describes transfer openings as occasional and does not consider midyear transfers. Every application component other than the later interview is due January 5, 2027, so transfer families do not get the January 31 school-item extension shown for the main process.
A complete file is screened in early February. Every transfer applicant gets an update February 22; only invited candidates continue to a campus visit and interview.
Decisions go to interviewed candidates March 12.
Transfer enrollment remains contingent on space after returning-student re-enrollment concludes in early March. A candidate may receive admission or enter a wait pool that stays active through summer.
Athletic transfers should also read California Interscholastic Federation and Central Coast Section eligibility rules before changing schools for sports.
Menlo publishes no transfer seat count by grade. Ask how many places actually opened after last March’s re-enrollment, not merely whether the application portal was open.
Relocating families
Menlo does not issue I-20s and is not a boarding school
Menlo defines an international applicant as a student who lives and attends school outside the United States and is not a U.S. citizen or permanent resident. The student must be fluent in English and reside locally with a parent or legal guardian.
Menlo does not issue I-20s, has no boarding, does not accept mid-year or one-year exchange students, and requires intent to graduate from Menlo. Parents are expected to be on campus frequently.
If instruction is not in English, TOEFL iBT is required. Menlo’s code is 3496, with section minimums of Reading 24, Listening 22, Speaking 25, and Writing 24.
Because TOEFL is due January 5, schedule it well before January and leave time for score delivery.
Menlo does not issue the I-20 needed for an F-1 student visa, and no exception is published. A relocating family should resolve legal residence and guardianship before applying.
Middle School academics
Sixth graders share one math path; later grouping follows classroom evidence
Every Middle School student takes English, math, science, social sciences, and a world language. French, Latin, Mandarin, or Spanish begins in sixth grade.
Creative arts, computer science, Human Skills, Learning Seminar, and physical education sit beside the core. Sixth-grade arts rotate Art, Dance, Drama, and Music.
Seventh and eighth become choice-driven.
Menlo does not level sixth-grade math. Seventh-grade placement follows a year of classroom observation: one enriched section and three grade-level sections.
The school says only about one-fourth of students are typically ready for the enriched depth.
By eighth grade, about half are enriched and half grade-level. Enriched covers the same concepts with more depth, not acceleration into new topics.
There is no compacted track and no testing out of middle-school math.
Menlo says all advanced and honors pathways remain open regardless of the Grades 6–9 sequence. If your child arrives from accelerated elementary math, ask how students move between paths and into Upper School courses.
The useful question is the sequence available to this learner—not the prestige of the seventh-grade label.
Upper School academics
A shared ninth-grade core, then expanding choice
Ninth graders take English 1, Modern World History, Physics 1 or Conceptual Physics, 9th Grade Seminar, placed math and world language, and one elective block.
Ninth Grade Seminar is a yearlong rotation of ten short courses. Topics include ethics, identity, media literacy, mindfulness, AI, Whitaker Lab, community engagement, and sexual health, including consent.
Graduation requirements include four years of English; three years each of history, math through Algebra 2, and science; Freshman Seminar; four semesters of physical education; community engagement; and arts credits that vary by class year.
Most students complete world language through Level 3. A student initially placed above Level 3 may instead complete two consecutive Upper School years.
Classes of 2027–28 also need one yearlong arts course in Grade 9 or 10, one semester of Fine Arts Exploration, and another arts semester. Later classes need two yearlong creative-arts courses.
Community Engagement requires 10 credits per year and at least three unique experiences. MTerm is required in grades 9–11.
Seniors finish with Life Beyond Menlo.
Menlo says its requirements meet or exceed the University of California and California State University college-eligibility course pattern, known as a–g. UC’s honors designations do not always match Menlo’s own labels, and a D may earn Menlo credit while failing the a–g standard.
Advanced work and workload
Honors replaced AP; the school still warns against over-rigor
Menlo stopped using Advanced Placement designations for most courses in August 2024. Its 2025–26 profile lists AP Physics 2 as the lone exception and gives Honors, AP, and Advanced Topics courses the same additional GPA weight.
Students are not ranked. GPA is cumulative from ninth grade excluding PE.
The profile’s Upper School figures include 602 students, a class of 143, mean GPA 3.83, and high GPA 4.29.
The current linked profile is labeled 2025–26. Ask for the profile used with Fall 2027 college applications before relying on course counts or transcript language.
The course catalog is broad, but access is not automatic. Honors and Advanced Topics courses carry grade restrictions and prerequisites that may include prior coursework, grades, teacher or department approval, a portfolio, or a placement test.
Read the sequence backward from a hoped-for senior course before assuming it will fit.
Upper School math is the clearest example. Menlo says most incoming ninth graders enter a non-honors course, and virtually all take Analytic Geometry and Algebra or Integrated Geometry and Algebra even if they studied algebra or geometry before.
May placement uses standardized scores, teacher recommendations, and Menlo’s exam; movement into honors later happens for only a few students and generally requires a Menlo teacher recommendation, another test, and summer work.
Menlo does not present Harkness as a schoolwide teaching system. Its regular ninth-grade Analytic Geometry and Algebra course is textbook-free and uses teacher-created problem sets, partner or small-group work, and whole-class discussion.
That is a concrete method in one department, not a promise that every class works the same way.
Menlo itself warns that taking as many challenging courses as possible is rarely a recipe for a happy year. The school says a schedule should still leave room for a good night’s sleep.
Later start times are framed as sleep-supportive. Middle School starts at 8:35 a.m. and ends at 3:20 p.m., or 2:50 on Day 1s.
Upper School starts at 8:45 a.m. and ends at 3:00 p.m.
No schoolwide homework-minute cap appears in the public handbook. A 2025 student-newspaper article linked academic rigor, after-school commitments, downtime, and sleep loss through interviews with Menlo wellness and teaching staff.
It did not survey the student body, so it signals a real pressure point without measuring prevalence.
Support, with boundaries
Support is broad, with firm documentation rules
Learning Resources aims at equitable access and independent learners. The range runs from drop-in help to math and writing centers, study-skills coaching, and Student Success Plans.
Middle School offers planning consults, Homework Club, supervised Study Hall, Kickstart for incoming students, and intervention plans. Upper School offers help sessions, an 8:00–4:00 Learning Center, and a Writing Center.
Menlo publishes an undated accommodation policy that requires current psychoeducational or psychiatric documentation meeting stated criteria. Extended time is not automatic simply because an outside evaluator recommends it; confirm the current classroom policy directly with the school.
This is a mainstream independent-school support model, not a specialized learning-differences school. If extended time is essential, ask what Menlo can authorize itself, what depends on College Board Services for Students with Disabilities approval, and what support is available while a request is pending.
Every student is in an advocacy group of about 10–12 with one adult. Upper School advocates stay four years.
Middle School advocates change yearly with the grade-level team.
Counseling is available by drop-in or email, with the usual confidentiality exceptions when a student may harm themself, may harm someone else, or may be harmed by someone. The Health Office provides basic on-campus care; families managing medication, chronic illness, or complex needs should ask who coordinates care across the full day.
Arts and athletics
A large-school program inside a mid-size day school
Menlo says every Upper School student participates in Creative Arts over four years. The Spieker Center for the Performing Arts opened in 2020, and Katherine Palmer directs the program.
Middle School athletics or physical education is required and built into six of the seven rotation days, not every day. Sixth-grade sessions run 1:00–2:05 p.m.; Grades 7 and 8 run 2:10–3:15.
The Middle School page describes a no-cut policy.
Upper School teams are not described as no-cut, so ask how often students are cut and what alternatives remain. Menlo competes in the West Bay Athletic League, Peninsula Athletic League, and West Catholic Athletic League, depending on the sport.
Experiential programs
MTerm, travel, and research sit beside the core
MTerm is a required two-week program after finals for Grades 9–11. Ninth grade focuses on environment, food, water, and California; tenth grade focuses on local justice, equity, and poverty.
Eleventh-grade options include Menlo Abroad, Borderlands, outdoor education, and social-impact workshops. Seniors take Life Beyond Menlo instead.
Menlo Abroad is described as three-week faculty-led programs. Posted destination examples include Costa Rica, Tanzania, Malaysia, and Peru.
Those packets are prior-cycle examples, not a 2027 roster.
Outdoor education is listed at about $1,300–$1,500, with aid if qualified. That cost may be a prior-year figure.
Catalyst Semester’s public page is thin, so 2027–28 operations remain unknown.
Optional advanced opportunities include Menlo Independent Projects, applied science and biotechnology research, and Global Online Academy courses that can carry Menlo credit and affect GPA. Ask which are open to a student’s grade and how selection works.
Culture and belonging
Belonging work is public; climate still needs direct questions
Menlo’s nondiscrimination policy covers race, ethnicity, sex, gender identity and expression, sexual orientation, religion, disability, immigration status, and other protected characteristics.
Carmen Borbón is Director of Institutional Belonging. A second five-year EDIB plan was completed in 2024, and a third planning process began in January 2025.
Knights Academy is an academic-enrichment transition program.
Menlo currently reports that about 60% of students identify as students of color; an older page still says 58%. The more important question is how belonging feels in classrooms, teams, and friend groups.
A January 2025 school announcement says senior leadership and the board refreshed Menlo’s values statement.
Niche lists an A+ grade and roughly 92 self-selected reviews, but several directory figures lag Menlo’s own pages. The comments can surface questions; they cannot tell a family how common any one experience is.
Seek out current parents whose children share your student’s needs, interests, or commute—not merely families who offer a generic endorsement.
Commute and late day
Buses and a Caltrain shuttle are inside tuition
The 2026–27 tuition includes Menlo buses and the Menlo Park Caltrain shuttle, currently operated under the Zum brand. Times may change in August.
Five 2026–27 routes cover Woodside and Portola Valley; Cupertino and Los Altos; San Mateo, Belmont, and Redwood City; Palo Alto, East Palo Alto, Atherton, and Menlo Park; and Burlingame through Redwood City.
Morning buses are listed as arriving about 8:20 a.m. Afternoon buses leave campus at 3:35 p.m. Caltrain shuttles pick up at Menlo Park station from 7:45 to 8:30 a.m.
The afternoon Loop—the shuttle circuit between campus and Menlo Park station—runs from 3:20 through about 5:45 p.m. It will not wait for a late train, so students are told to walk or take an earlier shuttle.
A sixth grader’s athletics window runs 1:00–2:05 p.m., while the academic day can continue to 3:20. Families using the 3:35 bus should confirm how that handoff works on a full-length rotation day.
The published transportation pages show the 3:35 bus routes and the Caltrain shuttle, but no separate late-activity bus. Nor does the school describe supervision until 5:45 as one unified after-school program.
A 5:45 shuttle time is not the same thing as guaranteed care until 5:45.
Climate in the record
2024 expulsions are on the record; they are not a culture verdict
In March 2024, Menlo’s student newspaper reported expulsions after racist language and conduct. Upper School Director John Schafer and Head Than Healy said publicly that such behavior was not tolerated.
A May 2024 follow-up reported that multiple students had been expelled in early March. The reporting establishes that the incidents occurred and that the school imposed serious consequences; it does not establish how common such behavior was or how students experience the campus today.
The fair reading is that Menlo removed students and addressed the community. The articles also show disagreement among students about the broader climate, and no quoted experience can stand in for the whole school.
The Coat of Arms has also reported on academic-honesty cases. The reporting does not establish how common cheating is, but it gives families a useful question: how does Menlo respond when academic pressure and integrity collide?
Parent workflow
Build two calendars if Grade 6 and Grade 9 are both in play
Start by identifying the entry year. Grade 6, Grade 9, and a transfer application each have different requirements and different family decisions.
Kindergarten is not a Menlo path.
Open Ravenna after September 1, 2026. Pay the fee or enter 26KNIGHTS or GOKNIGHTS.
Complete Kira with parent and student questions done separately.
Book the required sixth-grade visit, or the ninth-grade visit and interview, while space remains. Register Preview Day only after the pre-application and fee or waiver.
Register and schedule STAR by January 5, choosing among the January 9, 10, 23, and 24 test dates. Send accommodation documents by January 5 if needed.
Local applicants cannot substitute ISEE.
If applying for aid, finish Clarity with 2024 and 2025 taxes by January 5, 2027. Attend a webinar on October 10, November 9, or December 16, 2026 if the process is new.
Track the correct clock: January 31 for school-controlled items in the main domestic process; January 5 for every transfer component except the later invited interview; and January 5 plus January 30 for the two-part international process. A late or incomplete file may miss the regular decision timeline.
Read Ravenna after 4:00 p.m. on March 12. If aid matters, obtain the award timing and commitment terms in writing before accepting; the aid page currently points to March 19, when contracts are also due before noon.
After admission, expect placement work before summer course planning. In the prior cycle, Upper School testing ran in late April and early May; wait for Menlo’s Fall 2027 instructions before reserving dates.
Cost and aid
Price the posted $67,792 year; 2027–28 is unpublished
Full tuition and fees for 2026–27 are $67,792 at all levels. That figure includes lunch, buses, the Caltrain shuttle, most field trips and retreats, and athletic and arts participation.
Menlo has not yet published 2027–28 tuition. At current prices, tuition plus the listed $500–$700 for books and supplies and roughly $1,300 for a laptop produces a first-year baseline of about $69,592–$69,792 before optional costs.
That arithmetic is a 2026–27 planning floor, not a Fall 2027 quote.
“Most” field trips and retreats are included, not all. The MTerm page gives a roughly $1,300–$1,500 outdoor-education example, but that may be a prior-year amount; no complete Fall 2027 menu of global travel, team or club trips, equipment, or optional-program charges is public.
Menlo says admission is need-blind, aid is need-based only, and it meets 100% of demonstrated need for enrolled students. It offers no merit or athletic scholarships.
All legal parents and guardians must file, including divorced or never-married households. Late aid applications without a qualifying event will not be accepted.
Families reapply every year.
Clarity costs $65 and covers Menlo plus any other Clarity school. Grants are described as cutting tuition 11%–99% for 2026–27.
There is no public income-band chart.
Current school pages cluster around $8.6 million in aid for roughly the low-20s percentage of students; several older pages show lower totals. The statistic that matters to an applicant family is its own net price.
Menlo says a family’s grant percentage also applies to non-tuition school expenses, including books, laptops, athletic gear, school trips, and AP exams. Ask how that promise is reflected in bills, whether it covers every optional travel program, and whether aid reduces the enrollment deposit.
New families pay a non-refundable deposit by noon March 19, then choose full payment, a 70/30 plan, or ten monthly payments. Menlo describes the last option as a 4% charge on the remaining tuition balance calculated monthly; confirm the total financing cost before selecting it.
The deposit is published as 10%, not as a dollar figure. Ten percent of the current full tuition would be $6,779.20, but the actual Fall 2027 deposit may change with new tuition or aid.
Confirm the contract amount before treating that arithmetic as money due.
How entry works
Grades 6 and 9 are the dependable doors; transfers wait on space
Menlo’s main entry years are Grades 6 and 9. For Fall 2027, the school also lists transfer applications in Grades 7, 8, 10, and 11; one passage includes Grade 12 while the FAQ omits it.
The school publishes no applicant totals, offers, yield, or waitlist movement.
Menlo says about 70 new sixth graders and about 80 new ninth graders join each year. Those are intake figures, not acceptance rates.
Do not convert those numbers into selectivity. Without applications received, they describe planned intake, not how hard the door is.
Menlo says siblings are very important and carefully considered. Qualified affiliated students are still denied some years because of competition and space.
Menlo eighth graders do not submit a new Upper School application. The handbook says ninth-grade enrollment is not guaranteed in cases of poor attendance or academic struggle, when behavioral, social-emotional, or medical needs exceed school resources, or when Menlo determines in its discretion that Upper School enrollment is inappropriate.
This is not described as a fresh admissions competition. Families should still ask how early concerns are raised, what support is tried, and when a continuation decision is made.
Grade 6 and Middle School
Grade 6 is a visit, STAR, and two-teacher recommendation path
Sixth-grade applicants complete Ravenna, a fee or waiver, a Kira family video, an activity form, transcripts, and recommendations. They also take STAR and attend a required on-campus visit.
The sixth-grade visit runs rolling from October through early January. It includes a tour, a small-group activity, and lunch.
Casual dress is specified.
Middle School recommendations are a principal or counselor, a current-year teacher, and a previous-year teacher. The public page does not list a separate required sixth-grade interview.
The Grade 6 visit is a regular-process requirement. Grade 7 and 8 candidates follow the transfer process instead: Menlo first reviews completed files, then invites selected candidates for a campus visit and interview in February.
Exact Fall 2027 openings for Grades 7 and 8 are unpublished. Menlo accepts the applications, but enrollment depends on space left after returning-student re-enrollment; an available application is not an available seat.
Grade 9 and Upper School
Grade 9 adds a required interview to a larger intake
Ninth-grade applicants complete the same Ravenna family file, Kira video, activity form, transcripts, and STAR battery. Recommendations are a principal or counselor plus current English and current math teachers.
A ninth-grade visit is invited and includes academics, facilities, co-curriculars, and lunch with current students. A 15-minute conversational interview occurs during the visit.
Interview-only January appointments exist if the student will not attend a visit day. That is a process option, not evidence that the interview is optional.
Menlo says about 80 new ninth graders join each year. Roughly half of a typical 155-student graduating class entered in Grade 9.
Grade 9 is a different admissions experience from Grade 6. Applicants are being considered directly for the Upper School and complete a required conversation that the sixth-grade path does not list.
The live clock
January 5 is the first hard stop—but the file has several clocks
Admissions, financial-aid applications, and event registration opened September 1, 2026 on Ravenna. For the main Grade 6 and Grade 9 process, family-controlled items are due January 5, 2027.
For the main domestic process, school-controlled recommendations and transcripts are due January 31. Every transfer component except the later invited interview is due January 5.
International applications and TOEFL are due January 5; international transcripts, recommendations, and ISEE or SSAT follow on January 30.
Families must register and schedule STAR by January 5. Testing takes place January 9, 10, 23, and 24 on campus.
Decisions post on Ravenna after 4:00 p.m. on March 12; contracts and non-refundable deposits are due March 19 before noon.
New-family aid applications, including 2024 and 2025 federal taxes, are due January 5, 2027. Families upload 2026 tax forms by March 1.
Returning-family Clarity applications are due November 1, 2026.
There is a consequential official contradiction: the Applying page posts admission decisions March 12, while the aid FAQ says new-student grant decisions arrive March 19—the same day the non-refundable contract and deposit are due before noon. Ask for the award timing and commitment terms in writing.
The enrollment-instructions page still shows prior-cycle March 2026 logistics, including no credit cards and signatures from all legal parents. Use it to understand mechanics, not the Fall 2027 deadline.
The skeletal calendar now posted is 2026–27 only. The Fall 2027 student-year calendar is not yet published.
Testing, visits, and conversations
Local applicants take STAR at Menlo, not ISEE
Standardized testing is required. Local applicants from the nine Bay Area counties must take Menlo’s STAR at Menlo or a peer school offering it.
ISEE, SSAT, HSPT, and sending-school STAR scores are not accepted for local applicants. Out-of-area and international applicants may submit SSAT or ISEE.
Students test on school computers, answering 34 math and 34 reading questions, then complete a paper writing sample. There is no additional test fee, and Menlo does not release scores to families.
Middle School math leans on grades 3–6 foundations. Upper School math leans on high-school Algebra and Geometry.
The vendor is Renaissance STAR Reading and STAR Math.
Accommodations require an IEP, 504, or complete psychoeducational evaluation by January 5, 2027. The school asks families not to hire test prep and publishes no cut scores.
Kira is required: four parent questions and four student questions, completed separately. Preview Day windows on the checklist are September 26–27 or November 14–15, 2026.
The public pages do not give the application-fee amount. Fees are non-refundable.
Published waiver codes are 26KNIGHTS for aid applicants and GOKNIGHTS if the fee is a burden.
A substantial Peninsula school whose entry point—and week—must be chosen on purpose
Menlo’s appeal is coherent: a 6–12 day school with published Grade 6 and Grade 9 openings, included buses and lunch, arts and athletics scale, and an honors model that no longer leans on AP branding.
The mistake is treating those openings as one admissions experience. Grade 6 and Grade 9 ask different things of a child.
Eighth graders do not reapply, but families should understand how Menlo handles serious concerns before Upper School.
