This is the educational premise, not a demographic footnote

Castilleja places girls at the center of classes, advising, leadership, athletics, and school traditions. The school frames the model as the presence of girls, not merely the absence of boys.↗

Independent evidence is more cautious than the school’s claims. A meta-analysis covering 184 studies and 1.6 million K–12 students found advantages in uncontrolled comparisons but only trivial differences in controlled studies.

That does not negate belonging or voice at Castilleja; it does mean school type alone does not cause a particular child’s outcome.↗

Test this actual model through observed discussion, who receives and gives feedback, leadership distribution, STEM and arts participation, friendship dynamics, disagreement, and mixed-gender life beyond campus. The useful question is not whether girls’ schools work in general.

It is whether this student feels more expansive here.↗↗

Admission considers applicants who align with the mission and identify as girls. A student who later transitions away from identifying as a girl may remain and receive community support.↗

Interdisciplinary work grows into a small-school advanced program

Middle School emphasizes perspective, play, purpose, inquiry, projects, languages, wellness, arts, fitness, and disciplinary foundations. Sixth graders begin with interdisciplinary math-science building and historical inquiry.↗↗

Upper School uses faculty-designed Advanced Topics courses instead of a traditional AP curriculum. AT courses are the most rigorous and generally serve juniors and seniors; students in aligned AT courses may sit for selected AP exams.

This is depth without an AP label, not less rigor.↗

The dated 2025–26 profile reports 235 Upper School students and an average class size of 14. It strongly recommends no more than five core academic courses and four AT courses per semester, and warns that small-school enrollment and scheduling conflicts can limit selection.↗

Upper School uses semesters and does not rank students. Only AT courses receive extra GPA weight.

Honors courses do not. An unweighted GPA below 2.5 triggers academic probation.↗

The live program page links a 2026–27 course catalog, and department pages flag courses not offered that year. Read availability literally: a rich catalog is a menu, while prerequisites, demand, staffing, and conflicts determine the student’s actual plate.

Ask for request-versus-enrollment data.↗↗

Ambition is visible; weekly hours are not

Castilleja publishes course-load guidance but no nightly homework ranges by grade or course. Ask a sixth grader and ninth-grade entrant to reconstruct a recent full weekday, then ask the school for a normal week, a peak week, major-assessment coordination, late-work rules, retakes, and sleep data.↗

Niche’s 18-person poll found 89% describing students as competitive. Its 70-review page mixes warm accounts of teachers, friendship, and growth with concerns about pressure and stress.

These self-selected responses identify tensions to investigate; they do not measure schoolwide prevalence or predict one child’s experience.↗

The cumulative week matters more than any brochure category. Add advanced courses, arts, athletics, service, leadership, travel, construction routes, and commuting.

A student can love every component and still lack recovery time. Model bedtime, not just opportunity.↗↗

Strong accommodations and wellness language, with firm limits

Every student has a dean and advisor. The dedicated advising page says Middle School advisory meets daily and Upper School advisory rotates through community time; the wellness page more generally says all students meet weekly.

Ask for the actual 2026–27 schedule rather than forcing those descriptions to agree.↗↗

Counseling is available during the school day and some after-school hours. Published services include individual and group counseling, crisis intervention, parent consultation, and parent education.↗

Academic accommodations require current professional documentation, demonstrated limitation, and justified recommendations. Approved supports must fit a college-preparatory environment.

Castilleja does not permit curriculum modifications.↗

Public pages do not give counselor or learning-specialist caseloads, recurring-session limits, after-hours crisis coverage, evaluation funding, or remediation dosage. Before enrolling, ask the school to map this child’s support into an ordinary week and price whatever remains outside.↗↗

Wellness is visible; the operational rules are mostly private

The current wellness page names a director of student well-being, an Upper and Middle School counselor who also teaches sixth-grade wellness, and a counselor who is also a learning specialist. It offers individual and group counseling, crisis intervention, parent consultation, and some after-school availability.

Public pages do not state caseloads, session limits, licensure, confidentiality boundaries, or emergency coverage.↗

Health education and fitness aim at physical literacy, informed choices, mindfulness, and personal and community health. Athletics separately names a director of health and safety and an athletic trainer, and describes sports-medicine rehabilitation.

The public site does not establish everyday nurse coverage or a complete health-office model.↗↗

No current public student handbook or 2026–27 rule addresses phones, smartwatches, social media, recording, AI, or parent contact during the day. Archived handbooks appear in search, but they are too old to govern a Fall 2027 decision.

Ask for the current policy and enforcement by division.↗

Also ask about medication storage, menstrual support, allergies, infectious illness, concussion and return-to-learn, eating concerns, self-harm and suicide risk, parent notification, emergency transfer, and care on buses, retreats, athletics, and travel. Wellness language is encouraging; protocols determine what happens on a hard day.↗↗

A close circle can feel affirming and intense

The mission centers confident thinking, compassionate leadership, purpose, and five values: conscience, courtesy, character, courage, and charity. DEIJB programming names antiracism, affinity groups, student leadership, and belonging.↗↗

The 2025–26 school profile reports 75% of students identifying as students of color and 22% receiving aid. The current affordability page says one in five receives aid.

Cycles or rounding may explain the difference.↗↗

Niche shows a 4.4 rating across 70 reviews. Seventeen respondents produced its safety and happiness polls; 18 produced its competitiveness poll.

These small, self-selected samples cannot represent every student.↗

Broad participation still requires schedule-level checking

Visual and performing arts include dance, music, theatre, and visual art. Both divisions combine required and elective work.

This looks genuinely broad; the diligence question is access. Ask which courses, ensembles, productions, and studios a new sixth or ninth grader actually gets, and which require auditions, prerequisites, fees, evening rehearsals, or off-site space during construction.↗

Fall 2027 may be a transition year, not a finished-campus year

Castilleja has occupied its 1310 Bryant Street site since 1910; the property is in a single-family residential zone. After years of hearings and neighborhood debate, Palo Alto certified the environmental review and approved the conditional-use permit and redevelopment on June 6, 2022.↗

Phase 1, the underground garage, is officially complete. For 2026–27, most classes and programs moved into two-story Casti Village, with classrooms, labs, studios, library, maker and robotics space, and division hubs.

The Gunn Administration Building and Chapel Theater remain in use.↗↗

The school’s August 28 update showed active deconstruction in Phase 2. A prior milestone page says the modernized campus opens sometime during the 2027–28 academic year and warns schedules can change.

No public source promises that a Fall 2027 student starts in, or moves into, the finished buildings on a particular date.↗↗

Construction updates address trucks, fencing, lanes, noise, dust, security, cyclists, and pedestrians. Before contract, request a Fall 2027 occupancy map and contingency schedule showing classrooms, labs, arts spaces, fields, assembly, lunch, quiet study, accessible routes, drop-off, and emergency egress.↗

Traffic limits are an enforceable operating condition

City records say a 2000 permit capped enrollment at 415. Castilleja exceeded that cap for years; after discovering this in 2013, the city imposed a financial penalty and required reductions and a new permit.↗

The 2022 permit allows staged growth toward 540, not immediate enrollment at 540. Its cited condition keeps main-campus enrollment at no more than 416 during construction; after construction, the first stated ceiling is 450, with later increases tied to permit conditions.↗

Current traffic rules ask every family to avoid single-occupancy commuting at least three days weekly. Driving uses clockwise circulation, right turns, registered vehicles, garage drop-off, and restricted neighborhood parking.↗

The school’s neighborhood page posts a 2025–26 enrollment audit and Fall 2025, Winter 2026, and Spring 2026 transportation-monitoring reports; a Brown Act neighborhood committee reviews reports three times yearly. This oversight is material to daily logistics, not evidence about teaching quality.

Ask what the reports show against each target and what happens after a miss.↗↗

Free regional service helps, but the timetable still decides

Castilleja publishes free morning and afternoon buses or shuttles serving San Carlos, Los Altos, West Menlo Park, Portola Valley, Stanford Hills, Woodside, Burlingame, East Palo Alto, and Palo Alto Caltrain.↗↗

Morning arrivals cluster around 8:05–8:20. Caltrain shuttles leave campus through 6:25 p.m. Other route departure times vary.

Capacity, missed-bus rules, guaranteed rides, and Fall 2027 schedules remain unknown.↗

Students come from more than 50 ZIP codes. A route on paper is not a manageable day.

Test home-to-stop travel, Caltrain transfers, construction detours, practice nights, and emergency pickup.↗↗

No public page promises general aftercare. Confirm supervised spaces between dismissal and rehearsals, practices, or the final shuttle.

Ask about meals, medications, study space, late pickup, and transportation during breaks.↗

The current price is clear; the complete family price is not

For 2026–27, tuition and fees are $67,750. Add the school’s $650–$1,100 estimate for books and uniforms and $1,500–$2,000 for a laptop: the known first-year floor is $69,900–$70,850 before any unlisted expense.

Fall 2027 pricing is unknown.↗

The school reports an aid budget above $4 million and one in five students receiving assistance; its 2025–26 profile said 22%, likely a different cycle or rounding. Applications use Clarity, require annual renewal, and are evaluated separately from admission.↗↗

Castilleja strives to meet calculated need and maintains a supplemental activity budget. Returning recipients receive priority before new commitments.

Nonworking-parent income and multiple-household document rules can materially affect awards.↗

Three live school pages give three different award ranges—$4,490–$67,700, $7,500–$65,250, and $4,950–$67,700—without explaining which figure is current. Ask for the active Fall 2027 range and one inclusive cost sheet covering deposit, meals, trips, athletics, arts, technology, transportation, events, and expected fundraising.↗↗↗

Grade 6 is structural; Grade 9 and later entry need arithmetic

Grade 6 is Castilleja’s earliest entry point, with approximately 60 spaces. The school says it evaluates several hundred Grade 6 applications.

Neither figure supports an acceptance-rate calculation.↗

Grade 9 is a genuine external pathway: the head’s 2026 commencement remarks refer to students who started as sixth or ninth graders, and Admission says it evaluates more than 100 Grade 9 applications. Yet Castilleja publishes no ninth-grade openings, offers, yield, waitlist movement, or enrolled-new-student count.↗↗

Grades 7, 8, 10, and 11 are also open to applicants; Grade 12 is not listed. Public pages do not say whether these are predictable places, planned growth, or replacement of students who leave.

Open for application is not the same as an entry cohort.↗

The city permit authorizes enrollment growth in stages, but a higher eventual campus cap does not prove a particular grade expands in Fall 2027. Ask for applications, offers, enrolled newcomers, and waitlist offers by grade for three years—and ask how many 2027 places are growth versus attrition replacement.↗↗

The cycle is open; use January 5 as the working deadline

Ravenna opened September 1, 2026. As checked September 3, the live page says the $100 preliminary application is due January 5, 2027 in both the instructions and date list.

Admission offers fee waivers.↗

Recent revision, still worth confirming: a September 2 cached version placed a January 8 due date under a January 5 heading. The live HTML now aligns on January 5.

Save the Ravenna checklist and get written confirmation rather than planning around the later, apparently corrected date.↗

Applicant financial-aid files are due January 5. Admission and aid letters are mailed March 11, then posted in Ravenna March 12 at 4 p.m.↗↗

The public page accepts first-period transcripts through the end of January, but it does not publish a complete recommendation deadline, family reply and deposit dates, waitlist rules, Grade 9 seats, or 2027–28 tuition. Ravenna may answer some of these; screenshot what governs your file.↗

Conversation and authentic writing replace admission testing

Applicants submit a preliminary application, student questionnaires and essays, a parent questionnaire, recommendations, transcripts, a required interview, and a timed online writing sample. A preliminary application must precede the interview and some events, so waiting until January compresses the visit calendar.↗

Middle School interviews last about 15 minutes after a campus visit. Relocating families may interview by Zoom after the deadline.

High School interviews last about 20 minutes and occur by Zoom after January 5.↗↗

Recommendation patterns differ. Middle School asks for a principal or counselor, a current homeroom or language-arts teacher, and the prior-year counterpart.

High School asks for the current principal or counselor plus current English and math teachers. Castilleja neither requires nor encourages coach, music-teacher, or other extras.↗

Every applicant completes a virtual writing sample. The school estimates 15–20 minutes and permits up to 30.

The task needs a computer; public pages do not disclose prompts, scoring, accommodations, reader calibration, or how much the sample matters.↗

ISEE, SSAT, and STAR are not required. Castilleja says submitted results will not enter the file, while its transcript instruction still asks schools to send previous standardized testing.

That looks like a documentation mismatch, not permission to test-prep; ask Admission what readers can actually see.↗↗

Our application advice: let the student sound like herself. The interview is only 15 or 20 minutes and the timed sample is short; polishing every answer into adult language can erase the curiosity, judgment, and voice the school says it wants.

Ask how each component is evaluated, but do not manufacture a Castilleja persona.↗↗

Our readConfidence: High

Castilleja’s educational case is coherent; its capacity questions still need answers

The attraction is coherent: girls’ voices, leadership, intellectual work, wellness, arts, athletics, service, and advising inside one small community. Independent evidence does not prove single-sex schooling causes better outcomes, so test how this school changes the student’s actual participation and belonging.

Grade 6 is the cleanest entry story. Grade 9 is real, but public evidence gives applications without seats.

Refuse invented odds; ask whether each place is planned growth or replacement after attrition.
