These figures describe school-published typical admissions or openings, not acceptance rates. Hockaday’s grouped wording does not establish whether its ranges apply per grade or across the named grades; confirm directly.

The adjective is only useful when it changes daily life

Coed breadth

Greenhill offers PK–12 continuity, broad advanced courses, arts, athletics, and a large activity ecosystem. Ask how Grade 6 and Grade 9 newcomers obtain placement, help, and access rather than assuming breadth distributes itself.

All-girls ambition

Hockaday’s all-girls design shapes classrooms, leadership, arts, athletics, and belonging. It should be chosen for that living model, not an imagined prestige advantage.

Three versions of boys’ formation

St. Mark’s combines nonsectarian identity with chapel, character, and required outdoor education. Cistercian’s Catholic monastic life, Form Master, and common all-honors sequence concentrate the experience. Jesuit combines Ignatian formation, service, broader high-school scale, and extensive choice. These are not interchangeable boys’ schools.

Choice, common sequence, and acceleration create different pressures.

JesuitLarge Grade 9–12 Jesuit program with extensive course and activity choice on a five-of-seven-period rotationWhich courses have prerequisites or placement gates, and how does the rotating meeting pattern affect homework planning?

Jesuit says only five of seven periods meet on a given day and homework is collected when that class meets. That is a scheduling fact, not a promise of light workload. Ask each school for current grade-level homework guidance, assessment calendars, extension rates, tutoring norms, and what happens when a student needs to reduce rigor.

What each school adds to a serious list

Greenhill: Addison

Entry shape: K about 32 · Grade 6 about 5–8 · Grade 9 about 30–35.

The broad coed PK–12 option in this set. Kindergarten and Grade 9 are meaningful doors; Grade 6 is a narrow hedge. The school’s breadth is real, but so are the Addison drive and lack of a general bus. Read the full guide.

Hockaday: North Dallas / Welch Road

Entry shape: K/Grade 1: ambiguous 3–7 wording · Grades 6–8: ambiguous 5–7 wording · Grade 9 about 20–25.

An all-girls PK–12 day school whose wider doors sit in Pre-K, Grades 4–5, and Grade 9. Old boarding references are stale: residence life ended by 2025. Read the full guide.

St. Mark’s: Preston Hollow

Entry shape: No K · Grade 6 about 6–8 · Grade 9 about 20–25.

A nonsectarian boys’ school beginning in Grade 1, with explicit character, chapel, outdoor education, and substantial workload evidence. Later entrants join established academic and social sequences. Read the full guide.

Cistercian: Irving / Las Colinas edge

Entry shape: No K · Grade 5 about 40 · Grades 6 and 9 limited.

A small Catholic boys’ school built around one eight-year Form journey, an all-honors shared curriculum, monastic life, and a Form Master. Grade 6 and 9 are transfers into an established cohort. Read the full guide.

Jesuit Dallas: North Dallas / Inwood Road

Entry shape: No K or Grade 6 · Grade 9 main door.

A large Catholic boys’ high school with Jesuit formation, extensive academics, service, support, arts, and athletics. Every freshman is new, but the faith and busy five-class rotation must fit. Read the full guide.

A caring adult network is not the same as specialist service

Ask every school to translate counseling, learning support, accommodations, Form life, or advising into the child’s actual timetable. Who teaches the skill? How often? In what group? What class is missed? What costs extra? How is progress measured?

NeedEvidence to requestDo not infer
RemediationMethod, provider, minutes, group, measureA learning center remediates
Executive functionAdult, cadence, caseload, fading planAdvisory is coaching
AccommodationDocumentation, approval, delivery, appealA current plan transfers
Mental healthUrgent access, recurring-care limit, referralA counselor provides therapy

Greenhill and Hockaday publish learning and counseling teams; St. Mark’s publishes a wellness center. Cistercian’s Form Master and Jesuit’s advising, counseling, and formation networks may be deeply valuable, but a relationship structure is not automatically structured remediation or recurring therapy.

Health, safety, and governance still belong in the comparison

Ask who leads the school and whom that person reports to; how families raise a concern beyond the division; and how the school handles mandated reporting, adult-student boundaries, and visitors.

Separately ask about athletics medicine, heat/lightning, medication, emergency communication, and mental-health crisis referral. Public-facing detail varies. Absence of a public handbook is not proof of weak practice, but it is a reason to request the current policy.

Inventory is not access, and tradition is not universal belonging.

Greenhill and Hockaday offer broad arts and athletics inside large all-through programs. St. Mark’s combines substantial teams, arts, outdoor education, and boys’ traditions. Cistercian’s smaller Form structure can create close identity and visible roles while limiting the breadth possible at a larger school.

Jesuit’s high-school scale supports extensive activities and competition. Access may require tryouts, auditions, schedule choices, or travel.

Fall 2027 entrants will pay 2027–28 prices, which are not yet public. Compare written net bills and renewal assumptions, not aid percentages.

Aid timing also differs. Greenhill requires the full applicant aid file by January 25 and says on-time admitted families receive the grant with the March 12 decision. St. Mark’s sets February 15 for applicant aid.

Hockaday’s policy names need-based, one-year awards and Ravenna, but the lower instructions still display older SSS dates. Get the Fall 2027 deadline and document list in writing. Compare the written family contribution, non-tuition coverage, renewal inputs, deposit, withdrawal exposure, and confirmed TEFA treatment.

Private depth should coexist with a meaningful no-tuition plan.

Dallas ISD’s primary Fall 2027 Choice window runs November 1, 2026 through January 31, 2027. Families may rank up to five choices, with a maximum of two magnets; eligibility and campus assessment rules can apply, and ranking affects which lower choices remain.

Booker T. Washington, School for the Talented and Gifted, School of Science and Engineering, Montessori, dual-language, P-TECH, and early-college routes therefore require program-specific comparison, not a generic public backup label.

FWISD Gold Seal offers STEM, visual and performing arts, languages, Montessori, applied learning, and career pathways; its public page was still showing the 2026–27 lottery calendar at review. Fall 2027 dates must be rechecked.

Uplift’s public charter network uses a free October-to-February application and lottery sequence, permits up to three campuses, and does not provide transportation.

Our read

The right Dallas school is a community a child wants—and a week a family can sustain

These schools ask for different kinds of belonging. Coeducation, an all-girls environment, a nonsectarian boys’ tradition, Catholic monastic formation, and Jesuit high-school life are not marketing variations. They shape authority, friendship, ritual, responsibility, and the daily schedule.

Entry reality should discipline aspiration. A narrow Grade 6 or Cistercian Grade 9 route belongs inside a balanced list. So does transportation. The strongest program on paper becomes weaker when a student loses sleep, misses support, or cannot stay for the activity that made the school attractive.
