Our read

A larger grant can still produce the more expensive school.

Compare the family dollar, required fees, devices, trips, aftercare, transport, and activities—not the grant headline. Then ask whether the structure is renewable. Schools are balancing finite budgets and access; families are balancing siblings, housing, work, and a child’s full participation. Both deserve an honest number.

DFW schools divide mainly among Clarity, Ravenna, FACTS, and Blackbaud.

A platform gathers household data, tax documents, assets, liabilities, business records, and explanations; the school applies its own policy and budget. SSS was renamed Ravenna Financial Aid in 2026. A page that still says SSS may describe the underlying process, but the family should use only the live link inside the current school portal.

Clarity does not create a universal expected family contribution; each school applies its own formula and budget. FACTS likewise provides analysis while the school makes the award. Never move a number from one school’s portal into another school’s expected result.

The family workflow

  1. Create the aid account from the school’s current checklist, not an old bookmark.
  2. Add every school before paying so the family understands whether one application can be shared.
  3. Invite or identify every required parent/guardian early; privacy between household submissions does not erase participation rules.
  4. Complete income, expense, asset, debt, real-estate, and business sections before relying on tax retrieval.
  5. Upload the school-specific documents; a platform-complete file can still be school-incomplete.
  6. Write one concise special-circumstances statement with dates, amounts, and documents.
  7. Confirm receipt with the school and save the completion screen.

The earliest deadline belongs at the top of the family calendar.

Tuition ranges from the high twenties into the low forties—and the fee stack matters.

SchoolPublished tuition baselineCost detail parents can miss
St. Mark’sAbout $33,432–$42,697 by grade.Testing can cost $150–$325; aid may support tutoring, travel, technology, arts, and athletics.
Greenhill$34,740–$43,450.$1,500 new facility fee and deposit; monthly plan includes refund insurance.
Hockaday$34,466 PK–4; $40,894 Grades 5–12.$2,000 deposit, $1,000 matriculation, laptop in Grades 5–8, and insurance.
ESD$34,770 early years; $35,290 Grades 1–4; $42,140 Grades 5–12.Beyond-the-Classroom support can matter more than a tuition-only comparison.
Parish$15,750 half-day PK4 to $40,745 Grade 12.Many meals, trips, and fees are included; some destination trips and books are not.
Ursuline$30,550.Deposit, laptop package, insurance, books, uniforms, and parking raise first-year cash need.
FWCDRequired baseline about $19,390 JK to $33,220 Upper School.Books, trips, aftercare, and limited morning-only bus can change net cost.
Oakridge$18,320 early years to $31,760 Upper School.Books, trips, uniforms, athletics, lunch, clubs, and buses sit outside tuition.

Greenhill publishes included lunch, technology, and upper-school textbooks.Parish publishes a detailed tuition-and-fee schedule. Most schools have not set Fall 2027 tuition; do not convert this baseline into a promised increase.

Build two ledgers, not one tuition column

First-year cashRecurring annual costVoluntary but socially consequential
Application/testing, deposit, matriculation/facility fee, device, uniforms, initial suppliesNet tuition, required fees, insurance, meals, books, transport/tolls, aftercare, required tripsAnnual giving, auction, parent events, optional travel, club dues, spirit wear

Mark each line included, aid-eligible, reimbursable through TEFA, optional, or unknown. Then add a modest 2027–28 planning range rather than declaring a tuition increase the school has not published.

Separate homes, businesses, assets, and nonworking parents receive school-specific treatment.

Clarity generally expects every living biological parent and relevant stepparent or co-resident caregiving adult.Schools may consider a divorce decree without being bound by it; Jesuit publishes a different sole-responsibility exception. Ask for a waiver process immediately when a parent is absent, unsafe, or truly unknown.

Disclose real-estate value, debt, ownership share, investments, trusts, and unusual costs. Business owners should expect Schedule C/F, 1065, 1120-S or 1120 documents and K-1s.ESD, Parish, and FWCD may also examine earning potential for an able nonworking parent.

Explain exceptions with numbers and dates

“Income changed” is less useful than “the position ended May 15; severance was $18,000; current monthly income is $___; we attach the termination letter.” For a business, separate revenue, taxable income, owner compensation, retained cash, debt service, and a one-time gain. For two homes, state the legal arrangement and the actual support flow without asking the school to arbitrate the family relationship.

The second-year question belongs in the first-year decision.

Hockaday says awards are one year at a time and renewable when a family continues to qualify; it also warns that a full-pay entrant should not expect later aid without changed circumstances. Greenhill requires current recipients to reapply and may adjust grants when finances change. FWCD likewise requires a new financial statement and continued student standing.

Before enrolling, ask how the school treats ordinary tuition growth, a second tuition-charging child, job loss, a promotion, home equity, business volatility, TEFA, and a change in custody. “Renewable” is not enough; the family needs the inputs that could materially change its contribution.

A disciplined appeal

  1. Confirm the appeal route and deadline before signing the contract.
  2. Name the exact additional grant needed for enrollment.
  3. Identify a factual omission, changed circumstance, or documented cost—not mere disappointment.
  4. Attach the smallest set of documents that proves the point.
  5. Ask when a decision will arrive and whether the enrollment deadline moves.
  6. Keep another viable seat until the appeal is resolved.

A school may have no additional budget even when the appeal is reasonable. An appeal is a request for reconsideration, not a negotiation script or a reason to hide another affordable option.

A deposit is not the maximum amount at risk.

Greenhill, Hockaday, FWCD, Oakridge, and Ursuline publish substantial deposits or first-year fees. ESD unusually says a new-family deposit can be refunded when the aid award is insufficient. Read the withdrawal obligation, refund dates, dismissal provisions, and payment schedule before signing.

Tuition-refund insurance covers only its policy triggers. It generally pays the school against the contractual balance, not the parent as a free cancellation benefit. Obtain the policy certificate and enrollment agreement, especially when a family is preserving a wait pool elsewhere.

Waitpool economics

If the child holds School A while waiting for School B, write down the deposit lost at A, the next date at which more tuition becomes due, the expected aid at B, and the cost of switching transport or summer plans. Greenhill’s unranked waitpool can move through August, but that does not mean another school will release a family from its contract. The admission possibility and the financial exposure are separate.

Do not build a private-school budget around an unconfirmed TEFA award.

Fall 2027 TEFA new-family dates and amounts were not announced at our research cutoff. Current participants in good standing generally confirm continuation rather than reapplying; new families must follow the next state application and priority rules. A school may factor TEFA into individualized aid but cannot set a different tuition merely because the student has TEFA. Confirm school participation, the child’s award, disbursement timing, and the school’s aid treatment before executing a contract.

For context only, the inaugural 2026–27 program published $10,474 for an eligible participating private-school student and staged school payments 25% on July 1, 25% on October 1, and 50% on February 1, conditioned on continued enrollment. That schedule shows why cash flow and school billing matter; it is not a published Fall 2027 award or payment promise.

Greenhill states that it is not currently participating. A school’s participation and its treatment of TEFA in need-based aid can change, so check the state school finder and obtain the school’s current policy before counting a dollar.

The informed comparison may last only five days.

Dallas ISD Choice runs November 1 through January 31. Several public programs publish March 1 answers, while major private schools answer March 12 and the public response is due March 17. Keep the public offer, private award, deposit, binding date, transportation, and aftercare in one decision sheet.

Use one five-column decision sheet.

Subtract only confirmed support. Then compare the resulting family dollar with the public or charter path, including any transport, activity, device, or after-school costs there. “Free” and “all-in” are not the same word, but public tuition remains zero.

A financial problem needs a dated next move.

The deadline passed yesterday

Submit nothing blindly. Ask whether a complete late file can still be reviewed, whether funds remain, and which documents are needed. Preserve the full-pay admission question separately from the aid question.

A second household will not participate

Request the school’s exception or waiver process immediately. Provide the legal and contact history it requests; do not enter zeroes or omit a parent and assume the platform will infer estrangement.

Tax retrieval does not match reality

Finish required documents, then attach a short reconciliation of one-time income, current pay, business cash flow, or changed employment. Ask the school which interim statement it will accept.

The award is unaffordable

Calculate the exact gap, use the formal appeal route, and hold an affordable alternative. Do not sign first and assume the business office will later revise the grant or release the family.

Job loss occurs after enrollment

Notify financial aid and the business office promptly, provide dated evidence, and ask about emergency aid, payment-plan changes, withdrawal exposure, and insurance triggers. None is automatic.

TEFA is delayed or smaller than planned

Ask how the school bills before state disbursement, whether institutional aid is recalculated, and what the contract requires if state money never arrives. Replace the estimate with the family’s worst credible cash case.

Our read

Choose the school the family can inhabit, not merely enter.

We would favor a sustainable family contribution and full student participation over an impressive percentage discount. A school that requires chronic overwork, hidden exclusions, or an impossible drive can become the more expensive choice even with a larger grant.
