Learning
A week with Quaker roots
Quaker practice is part of the weekly rhythm. Students and teachers gather for Meeting for Worship in silence, and anyone moved to speak may.
Some children take to that quickly. Others need time, so ask how new students are welcomed into it.
Recent student work starts from conversation too. Two seniors in 2025 built a website for people seeking below-market housing after a Socratic seminar on affordability in their economics class, teaching themselves to code over the summer.
The school says The New York Times covered it. In 2025–26, art students spent several months making work beside residents of a Brooklyn Heights senior-living community, with a shared exhibition planned for May.
In the Lower School, every classroom holds its own Wednesday Meeting. Kindergarten through Grade 3 classrooms each have a head teacher and an associate teacher, while Grade 4 has one lead teacher and a floating collaborating teacher.
Math uses Bridges in Mathematics.
In Grades 5 and 6, a study-skills class meets twice a week. In Grades 7 and 8 those skills are taught within content classes, and students are expected to manage more on their own.
In Grades 11 and 12, the school offers a Course pathway that mixes IB and BFS classes, and a Baccalaureate pathway toward the full IB Diploma. Diploma students write a 4,000-word Extended Essay, take Theory of Knowledge and complete Creativity, Activity, Service.
Ask how and when students choose a pathway.
Applying
Applying for Fall 2027
Families apply through Ravenna, and Kindergarten applicants must turn 5 by September 1, 2027. Kindergarten, Middle School and Upper School interviews go to families whose preliminary application arrives on time.
The Middle School checklist lists no test.
Aid
Financial aid
Aid is available from the 2s through Grade 12 and depends on need and limited funds, so admission does not guarantee a grant. Quaker families, school colleagues, alumni and siblings get priority consideration for aid only, and even they are not guaranteed it.
Every parent files through Clarity, whatever the custody or marital arrangement.
A family can appeal an award once. If the appeal is still unanswered at the contract deadline, the contract and deposit are still due to hold your child's place.
School day
Afternoons and commute
For 2026–27, the BFX program covers Early Childhood through Grade 6. Early Childhood pickup is 4:30 or 5:30, and Kindergarten and up can stay until 6:00.
Friends Club childcare is $55 a day.
On a day your child has an Xploration or music lesson, Friends Club is not an option. If you also want care that day, Transitional Care is $25, paid on top of the activity.
Families currently receiving aid get 5 to 25 percent off Friends Club and Transitional Care, depending on the number of days. Xplorations and music lessons are not discounted.
The school offers private bus service on select routes only. Other families come by subway, public bus or carpool.
Support
Learning support
Support is tiered. Everyday supports are built into classes for all students, and the school adds further interventions when it decides they are needed and feasible.
The school keeps its curriculum and learning requirements in place while helping a child find ways to meet them. Ask what additional help would look like for your child, how often it happens and who provides it.
Learning specialists work with teachers, sometimes work directly with students, and coordinate with families on support in and out of school. Counselors work with teachers, families and outside providers, and in a crisis connect students with outside care.
Safeguarding
Safeguarding history
Two Appellate Division decisions, Kaul in 2023 and Redd in 2025, involve former students' claims under New York's Child Victims Act about alleged abuse by school employees. In both, the court allowed negligence claims against the school to proceed past an early motion to dismiss.
Kaul also kept an emotional-distress claim, while Redd dismissed the emotional-distress claims and a demand for punitive damages. Both are procedural rulings, not final judgments on liability, and we have not verified a later outcome in either case.
Try the rhythm, then test the details
The Quaker rhythm is the hardest part of this school to picture from a brochure. On a visit, notice whether your child is drawn to the silence and the conversation or finds it a stretch.
Then test the practical pieces: the commute, the support, and how the school handles safety concerns today. The earlier court cases are part of the public record and a fair reason to ask, though they do not establish what current practice is.
Brooklyn Friends on aid deadlines, buses and support
These questions pin down the aid date that applies to you, whether a bus serves your address, and what happens when your child needs more than classroom help.
Worth asking directly
- Which financial aid deadline applies to our family, and can you confirm it in writing?
- Is there a bus route serving our address for 2027–28, what does it cost, and how long is the ride? If we take transit, what does a school-morning trip look like?
- If my child needs more than everyday classroom support, what would the school add, who provides it, and who coordinates with our outside providers?
- How are concerns about safety or staff conduct reported and handled now, and what do families hear afterward?
