Inside the academic model
PYP, partial MYP, IGCSE, and A Levels are four different stages
Early Years combines English early-childhood goals with PYP inquiry and play. The Lower School teaches English National Curriculum objectives inside the PYP and culminates in a Year 6 exhibition.
French and Spanish exposure begins early, with students choosing a continuing language by Reception.
Grades 6–8 study eight MYP subject groups along with offerings such as Latin, debate, choir, sport, and electives. The generic MYP normally continues to age sixteen, but BIS-NY exits after Year 9.
A family should not infer that a Grade 8 student has completed the full MYP sequence.
Grades 9–10 can take up to ten IGCSEs across English, mathematics, sciences, humanities, arts, languages, physical education, computing, and Global Perspectives. Grades 11–12 typically narrow to three or four A Levels.
Subject availability depends partly on cohort demand, so a published list is not a promise that every combination will run.
A Levels reward depth. They can be excellent preparation for a student with clear strengths and international university plans.
They provide less mandated breadth than the IB Diploma and may feel early to a student still exploring. Ask how BIS-NY helps a fifteen-year-old choose subjects without closing important options by accident.
Learning, language, and therapy
The expanded support program is promising and newly operational
BIS-NY describes personalized academic support, EAL in class and small groups from Reception through Year 9, mentoring, accommodations, executive-function help, nursing, counseling, and SEN staff. EAL pull-out may replace French, Spanish, or sometimes Latin, which is a real curriculum tradeoff rather than free additional service.
The school says on-site speech, occupational, and physical therapy and expanded academic, emotional, and social intervention groups begin in September 2026. Because students start September 8, those services had not completed an ordinary school term by this review date.
Commute, homework, and the transatlantic calendar
Waterside Plaza can feel calm and still be hard to reach
The riverfront campus includes playgrounds, a pool, science labs, art studios, libraries, music space, and an urban garden. Older athletics also use Asphalt Green, Basketball City, and East River Fields.
It is a capable city campus, not a self-contained field complex.
Drop-off runs around 8:15–8:40. Early and Lower School dismiss at 3:20; different pages put older dismissal at 3:30 or 3:45.
Breakfast begins at 7:45 and care or supervised study can extend to 5:30 for eligible students.
The far-east location lacks a nearby subway entrance. Families may use crosstown and avenue buses, ferry, subway-plus-bus, or a longer walk.
Eligible Manhattan Kindergarten–Grade 6 students may receive DOE yellow-bus service, while older eligible students may use OMNY. A city benefit does not guarantee a short, stable route.
The commute can be easy from Waterside, Kips Bay, Stuyvesant Town, or a ferry connection and surprisingly cumbersome from elsewhere. Visit at the actual morning hour, then repeat the trip at dismissal and after an activity.
Offsite sport adds another movement layer for some students.
Ownership and external review
Network ownership may add resources and changes the accountability question
BIS-NY is part of Affinitas Education. An Oakley Capital investor report says Affinitas acquired the school in May 2024 with support from a private-equity fund investment.
This is a proprietary, network-owned model rather than the independent trustee nonprofit structure used by many NYC schools.
Affinitas describes shared training, resources, data and AI work, exchanges, wellbeing, and campus investment across more than twenty schools. Scale can help a small school.
Parents should also ask who controls tuition, staffing, curriculum, property, and profit or reinvestment after acquisition.
The IB directory confirms PYP and MYP. COBIS currently lists BIS-NY as a Member under its compliance category.
The school prominently links a 2018 accreditation report whose own five-year term and 2023 revisit date have passed. Cambridge and Pearson authorization support qualification delivery but are not substitutes for a current whole-school inspection.
Choosing among international schools
The decisive comparison is credential shape, not national branding
Compare BIS-NY with UNIS or Dwight when the family wants international education but must choose between A Levels and an IB Diploma. UNIS is larger and less expensive; Dwight is a full IB continuum at a similar or slightly higher cost.
Neither duplicates BIS-NY’s British qualification sequence.
Nord Anglia International School New York is the closest British middle-school comparison but currently ends after Grade 8. Lycée Français and The École are stronger comparisons for deep French academic continuity, while International School of Brooklyn offers bilingual PYP/MYP at a lower price and also ends after Grade 8.
Niche can help surface family sentiment, but it cannot verify qualification authorization, current support staffing, ownership, tuition, or destinations. Use current official records for those claims and use reviews to generate questions rather than conclusions.
Tuition, fees, and aid
K–12 tuition sits near the top of the NYC market
Published 2026–27 tuition is $45,600 for Nursery, $51,000 for Reception, $66,700 from Kindergarten through Grade 8, and $67,800 in Grades 9–12. New students pay a $2,500 enrollment fee and every student pays a $225 activity fee.
The deposit is credited to tuition.
Tuition includes lunch and snacks, instructional materials, athletics, daytime extracurricular activity, and day trips. Uniforms, optional clubs, aftercare at $25 per hour, and Parents’ Association dues remain extra.
Middle School excursion week is mandatory and currently priced at $1,975 in Grade 6 and $2,275 in Grades 7–8, subject to actual cost.
Partial need-based aid is available and is described as separate from admission. Current public material does not disclose the 2027–28 deadline, recipient share, budget, award range, or early-years cap.
The detailed policy online belongs to 2025–26, so its limits should not be treated as current without confirmation.
The appropriate comparison is all-in. BIS-NY costs more than UNIS or International School of Brooklyn but includes several items those schools price differently.
It remains close to top-tier NYC private-school tuition, and a family should model annual increases through Grade 12 rather than solve only the first year.
Kindergarten, Grade 6, and Grade 9
The natural entry years align with curriculum transitions
BIS-NY uses British year names. Year 1 is Kindergarten, Year 7 is Grade 6, Year 10 is Grade 9, and Year 12 is Grade 11.
September 1 is the normal age cutoff, while a Nursery “rising three” may enter if turning three by December 31 and independently toilet trained.
Kindergarten begins the formal primary sequence. Grade 6 begins Middle School and MYP; Grade 9 begins the two-year IGCSE program; Grade 11 begins A Levels.
These are logical points to join, but the school does not call them guaranteed expansion years or publish new-seat counts.
A Grade 6 applicant submits reports, a recommendation, current mathematics and writing samples, and a brief informal interview. Grade 9 adds an essay, school-leader or advisor input, math and English recommendations, existing test results, and a student interview.
Grade 11 applicants need subject references and may need sample papers when they lack IGCSEs.
The later the entry, the more course alignment matters. A strong U.S. student can still face missing IGCSE content or prerequisites for an A-Level choice.
Ask for a transcript map before treating “all grades available” as evidence that the academic transition will be simple.
The Fall 2027 process
Early review gives families time, but order can matter
The current FAQ says 2027–28 applications opened in July 2026 and the first-round deadline falls in mid-December. The school begins reviewing files in the fall, may issue decisions early, and does not require commitment until February enrollment opens.
After the first round, applications are considered as space allows.
Siblings receive priority, while other places are described as offered in order of completed application. That makes timing meaningful, though not a substitute for fit.
The school invites a family to apply after an inquiry, conversation, and tour or remote meeting; the application fee is $125.
Current pages refer to OpenApply, TADS, and a new Clarity enrollment and billing system in different places. This does not change the educational decision, but a family should confirm which platform holds the authoritative checklist and whether an older account has transferred.
No admission odds, grade-level seat table, wait-pool movement, or evaluation rubric is public. Ask what each interview or work sample is designed to reveal and whether the school is filling a new section or a vacancy.
Our read: unusually coherent for the student who wants A Levels
BIS-NY should appeal most to a family that understands the destination, not merely the British atmosphere. PYP inquiry, partial MYP, IGCSEs, and A Levels can form a thoughtful progression from breadth into depth.
The small community and international mix strengthen that proposition.
The school becomes less convincing when a family assumes “IB” means an IB Diploma, wants broad study through senior year, needs established intensive services, or expects nonprofit-style governance transparency. The newly expanded therapy program deserves time and evidence before parents treat it as settled capacity.
