School life / The headphone party

The Silent Disco Was Not Silent

A Minnesota elementary school gave every student a headset with three channels of music. The students all picked the same one and sang.

An imagined school silent disco: children in glowing headphones form a conga line while two teachers play music from laptops and a volunteer watches.

In September 2024, the students of Oak View Elementary, in the Osseo Area Schools north of Minneapolis, met their fun-run fundraising goal. The reward came in late October: a silent disco in the gym, during each class's PE period, with the lights down and disco lights on.

Every student got a headset that played three different channels of music. That is the whole idea of a silent disco: choice, privacy, and a gym that stays quiet.

According to the district, the students set their headphones to the same channel so they could sing and dance along together. They formed conga lines. They ran around singing under the lights.

The headphones kept the music private. Nobody told the singing.

This is good news. You can give a child the most personal listening device in the history of sound, and the child will use it to find out what everybody else is listening to, then join in at the top of her lungs.

It has a hazard for the adults. On a DJ forum, a teacher described plans for a surprise silent disco at school two weeks away, with two channels and the teachers competing for listeners. Most of the staff would use playlists. This one wanted a few easy mixing tricks to stand out, and had no budget for equipment.

On many systems, the little lights on the headsets change color by channel. So that teacher would stand in the gym watching the colors. Every kid who switches away is a vote, cast with a thumb, in real time.

We tried this at home, on a long drive in the minivan, by accident. Everyone had headphones. Everyone was listening to something different. Then the youngest, in the back, started singing her song out loud, and the middle one, without taking his headphones off, joined in. He knew all the words. He has told us for a year that he hates that song.

By the third chorus the eldest was singing too, and so was my wife, and so was I. The dog, who is old, howled. Nobody was listening to their headphones. We had, between us, five channels and one song.
