The useful comparison is the family bill and the family risk.
A $20,000 grant at one school can be less affordable than a $15,000 grant elsewhere. Add required fees, books, meals, transport, support, activities, payment-plan charges, and the amount at risk after withdrawal. Then ask whether the child can participate fully.
One form does not create one answer
Clarity collects information; the school awards its own money.
FAST permanently closed August 31, 2026. SSS renamed its product Ravenna Financial Aid in May 2026. Most schools in this Atlanta set use Clarity; Walker uses Blackbaud. A lingering FAST link or older SSS label needs confirmation.
Clarity does not produce a universal family contribution. Every school applies its own policies, priorities, budget, and judgment. Divorced or separated parents generally file separately, and schools may include stepparents. Ask about an exception before the deadline, not after the portal rejects the file.
Planning figures, not promises
Price the first year school by school.
| School | Current tuition | Fall 2027 aid | Parent watch item |
|---|---|---|---|
| Westminster | $37,525 / $42,865 | Clarity · Jan. 15 | Need-blind; 20% deposit creates a large April cash requirement. |
| Pace | $37,360 / $43,020 | Clarity · Feb. 15 | Need-blind; says it meets full demonstrated need for qualified applicants. |
| Lovett | $34,850 / $41,110 | Clarity · Mar. 1 | Award depends on need and available funds; extras remain incompletely public. |
| AIS | $32,364–$36,947 | Clarity · Mar. 1 | Matriculation, meals, insurance, installments, and travel can materially change cost. |
| Paideia | $30,780–$35,037 | Clarity · Feb. 1 | Limited early-grade aid; school generally expects more than Clarity’s estimate. |
| Marist | $27,461 | Clarity · Jan. 29 | Need-blind; add registration, laptop, books, lunch, uniform, and travel. |
| Galloway | $32,600–$37,400 | Clarity · Feb. 12 | Limited funds; $2,500 deposit and optional insurance. |
| Woodward | $29,950–$37,950 | Clarity · Feb. 1 | Aid starts at Grade 4; Transition support adds $13,500. |
| Walker | $27,370–$38,810 | Blackbaud · Feb. 5 | Need-blind; maximum award is 50% through Grade 5 and 90% in Grades 6–12. |
| HIES | $22,310–$39,440 | Clarity · Feb. 1 | Applicant deadline is grade-specific; current families file Dec. 1. |
| TCS | $27,750–$29,700 + fees | Clarity · Feb. 12 shown in core steps | 38% receive aid; intensive literacy support can add $5,675. |
| Mount Vernon | $31,300–$36,550 | Clarity · 2027 date unknown | Live aid deadlines are stale; confirm before relying on them. |
Westminster publishes need-blind admission, a January 15 aid deadline, and a 20% credited deposit. Pace publishes need-blind admission, full demonstrated-need language, support for essential costs, appeals, and midyear emergency review.
Lovett’s new-family aid deadline is March 1, with awards April 3. AIS layers matriculation, technology, meal, installment, insurance, and travel costs onto tuition. Paideia says early-grade aid is very limited and its family contribution often exceeds Clarity’s estimate.
HIES opens Clarity September 1; its standard applicant deadline is February 1, while returning families file December 1. TCS publishes need-blind admission, no merit aid, and aid for 38% of students, but its page displays different dates for application and supporting steps. Use the portal checklist for the controlling deadline.
What belongs in the family bill
Include the school day the child will really live.
Marist’s $27,461 tuition is not its complete first-year price. Registration, laptop, books, lunch, uniform, activities, and travel raise the known baseline to roughly $30,241 before several variable costs. Woodward’s upper-school commuter can reach about $43,290 after a first uniform and round-trip bus, before books and activities.
If the child needs Woodward’s Transition Learning Support, add $13,500. If a family uses a payment plan, add the financing cost. If a student will stay for rehearsal or varsity practice, price the second pickup. Affordability is not just the invoice; it is the household system needed to make the school usable.
At TCS, current grade fees rise from $725 in K–2 to $2,450 in Grade 8; annual extended day is $3,830. More-intensive literacy support or support in Grades 6–8 is listed at $5,675. At HIES, current tuition is $32,730 in Kindergarten and $39,440 in Grades 6–12, with technology and grade trips outside tuition. A Grade 8 trip alone is listed at $2,400. These are 2026–27 planning facts, not Fall 2027 promises.
Tell the financial story clearly
Complexity needs evidence, not a longer adjective.
For divorce, remarriage, business ownership, unusual assets, recent job loss, elder care, medical cost, or several tuition-paying children, submit the standard file on time. Then add a concise explanation and documents. A decree assigning tuition to one parent may not remove the other household from the school’s analysis.
Business owners should distinguish revenue, taxable income, retained operating cash, owner benefits, and one-time events. Asset-rich families should expect real estate, home equity, investments, trusts, retirement accounts, and education savings to be considered. The goal is not to argue with the form; it is to make the family’s real capacity understandable.
Award, deposit, and exit terms
A deposit may be the smallest amount at risk.
Westminster’s 20% deposit is much larger than Galloway’s $2,500 or Woodward’s $3,500, but the withdrawal clause matters more than the label. Paideia’s first payment includes a $3,500 nonrefundable administrative fee. Darlington states that the annual contract is not cancelled or refunded for absence, withdrawal, or dismissal.
Tuition insurance varies sharply: AIS publishes 3.1%, Mount Vernon 1.5%, and Galloway 0.85%. That does not mean the cheaper policy is better. Compare triggers, waiting periods, excluded withdrawals, and the share actually reimbursed.
Promise, GSNS, and GOAL
Three Georgia programs answer different questions.
Georgia Promise currently publishes a 2026–27 maximum of $6,500, generally for a rising kindergartner or a student with two consecutive public-school semesters who lives in an eligible attendance zone. Fall 2027 amounts, windows, and school lists are not yet established. Do not sign a contract assuming an award.
The Georgia Special Needs Scholarship has separate eligibility and deadlines. Accepting it means declining public-school IDEA services, and the private school need not implement the public IEP. Georgia GOAL is a tax-credit scholarship administered through participating schools; its historical average is not a promised family award.
Promise cannot be combined with GSNS or GOAL. GOAL may be folded into an institutional package rather than added on top. Ask the school to show the permitted net-price scenario under each program before choosing.
The public answer may come first
APS timing can create a decision before private aid arrives.
Only prior-cycle APS dates are public. In 2026–27, transfer offers began in late February with five days to answer; charter results arrived in March. Later public offers continued into May. Private decisions and aid arrive April 3, with replies April 13. Use the old dates only to identify the possible collision, not to predict Fall 2027.
When the first number does not work
Separate an appeal, a payment problem, and an unaffordable school.
Appeal when a material fact was missing or changed: job loss, a medical obligation, business disruption, a household change, or a documented error. State the exact annual gap and attach the evidence. A payment plan can solve timing; it does not solve a recurring budget deficit. Borrowing to cover a bill that will rise each year is not an aid strategy.
Before the April 13 reply, ask what happens if the award cannot be increased, whether the deposit is refundable after an appeal, and when the full tuition obligation attaches. Preserve the zoned public, charter, magnet, or current-school route until the private contract and complete net bill are understood.
If aid arrives late or not at all, ask about wait-pool review, a later public offer, state-program eligibility, and a one-year reset. The responsible answer may be a school the family can sustain without excluding the child from trips, arts, athletics, tutoring, or normal family life.
A good appeal is specific enough for a school to use.
State the exact annual gap, the fact the first review missed, and the documents that support it. Schools are trying to stretch finite funds across many deserving children. A calm, precise request helps them decide whether a responsible path to yes exists.
Keep going
Put the net bill beside timing and fit.
