Teaching
An eighth grader builds a pet for a younger boy
In Browning’s Digital Pet project, an eighth grader has a younger client. He talks with a Lower School boy, then designs, builds and programs an interactive cardboard pet for him.
The course brings together robotics and design; the younger boy supplies someone whose wishes the builder has to understand.
The Upper School opened its new building in May 2025, giving Browning a regulation gym for home games. With Grades 9–12 moving to 64th Street that fall, the school planned to bring younger boys over for games, performances and other gatherings.
A K–12 school now has two front doors.
Classrooms
Structured phonics early, study tools by Grade 3
In the Lower School, reading starts with structure. Kindergarten through Grade 2 follow Wilson Fundations for letter sounds, decoding and spelling, and The Writing Revolution teaches sentence and paragraph structure across the division.
In Grade 5, the Panama Canal project has boys research the canal's construction, learn about its workers through the novel Silver People and design a working Lego model of a lock.
Across the school, teaching runs on Target-Focused Teaching. A boy is told what he is aiming at, at the level of the subject, the grade and the day's lesson, then gets feedback on how his work met it, often a rubric with a comment.
Tests, papers, labs, performances and discussions can all count as assessment, some to guide the next step and some to set a grade.
From Grade 3, boys are taught how to study: a survey-question-read-recite-review routine for reading, Cornell-style note pages, a color for each subject and a school planner for assignments. These habits are taught rather than left for boys to work out alone.
Upper School
The Iliad, then an epic of their own
Ninth-grade English begins with The Iliad and moves between older literature and modern retellings. Boys compose and present epics about themselves, alongside oral exams and writing workshops.
Storytelling I gives all ninth graders practice sharing experiences and ambitions aloud. A separate Storytelling Capstone culminates in a performance for the school community.
Boys who want to go further can take on a Certificate of Distinction: a self-directed project spanning two or more years in data science, engineering, fine arts or humanities, with faculty mentors and outside experts.
Workload
Homework, pace and support
Browning describes its curriculum as fast-paced. Read the homework figures above as work for each class meeting, then ask what a full evening looks like.
Support comes through people. Each division's Student Support Team meets weekly, drawing in deans, counselors, the nurse and learning specialists.
Every division has its own learning specialist, who works with boys one-on-one or in small groups, teaches study and organization skills and coordinates accommodations, and a math specialist covers Kindergarten through Grade 8. Counselors support wellness.
Kindergarten
Kindergarten, KinderFirst and the birthday question
Kindergarten applicants must turn five by December 31 of the entry year. KinderFirst offers a small group the chance to cover Kindergarten and Grade 1 together, with readiness for Grade 2 checked during the year.
KinderFirst has one dedicated classroom teacher plus specialists. Eligible families are asked in December whether to be considered; those who say yes sit a second assessment on January 9, 2027, and hear the placement recommendation with the Kindergarten decision.
A qualifying boy can still choose regular Kindergarten.
Before March break, KinderFirst boys are assessed for Grade 2 readiness, and if Grade 1 looks like the better step, the school says it will talk it through with the family. Seats are limited and a small waitlist is expected.
Confirm KinderFirst eligibility with admissions: its dedicated page says boys turn six between May 1 and December 31 of the entry year; one Apply-page paragraph says five.
Applying
Applying for fall 2027
Apply through Ravenna. Kindergarten involves a playgroup, parent conversation and Zoom school session.
From Grade 6, add an essay and SSAT or ISEE taken since September 2026. Grades 9–12 also require a peer recommendation.
Browning considers applications from children who identify as boys or were assigned male at birth, but not from children who currently identify as girls.
French or Spanish placement requires an early-September exam. Middle School beginners, including boys who do not place into French or Spanish, start Latin; Grade 9 beginners can start Latin or Mandarin.
Book early: appointments may fill before the deadline, leaving later applicants on a waitlist. If an in-person visit is difficult, ask admissions what is possible.
- December 1, 2026: preliminary application and appointment booking.

Aid
The aid application
Aid is need-based, with admission decided independently of financial need. The $75 school application fee is waived for aid applicants; request the code from admissions.
Apply through Clarity, which charges $65; hardship waivers may be available. New families receive an award decision with admission, and must reapply for aid annually.
Aided families generally pay the same proportion of optional costs as tuition, determined individually.
Separated or divorced parents each submit financial information, as do step-parents and domestic partners; discuss your household’s requirements with the aid office.
Daily life
Encore and a day that can run to 4:45
Encore runs from 3:15 to 4:45 p.m. and costs extra. The admission FAQ lists Kindergarten through Grade 4; confirm eligibility if your son is entering Grade 5.
Registration is by term, so include it in your afternoon planning.
Put the work beside the workload
A younger client for a robot and an epic about your own life are appealing assignments. They also ask a boy to explain his thinking to someone else.
On a visit, look at the work in progress, including what happens after the first attempt.
Then bring your son’s actual experience into the conversation: the tasks that absorb him, the work that takes longer and the help he currently uses. A specific discussion about those things will tell you more than a general promise that he will be challenged.
Homework evenings and support plans at Browning
Browning is a K–12 boys' school across two buildings, so ask about an ordinary evening, how a support plan is agreed, and how younger and older boys mix.
Worth asking on a visit
- Across all classes, what does an ordinary homework evening look like in our grade?
- If our son needs additional support, how would you agree a plan with us and review it?
- How often do younger and older boys work together across the two buildings?
