No Time for a Dignified Retreat
A disappointing Latin grade, a crowded homeroom, and very little room for solitary dignity.
An adult facing sudden misfortune might murmur an excuse and slip down the hallway before anyone notices a trembling chin. Solitary dignity requires a little time alone.
Stephanie A. ('26) was granted no such margin. Speaking at a Nightingale-Bamford convocation, she recalled that after receiving a disappointing grade on a Latin test in ninth grade, she burst into tears during homeroom. As she candidly told it, this was no 'dainty, single-tear' weep, but a 'full-on, gasping-for-breath ugly cry.'
A room of adults might have looked away out of politeness. Stephanie’s classmates closed the distance instead: people from her Latin class, peers beside her, and friends crossing the crowded homeroom. They folded her into a group hug.
She remembered it as the moment she felt she belonged. So much for the quiet exit.
